Problems Cause by Over Usage of Computers
Musculoskeletal problems.
Muscle soreness and muscle fatigue.
Back pain, chest pain, pain or numbness in arms, shoulder and feet.
Posture while using the computer is not correct.
Sitting in front of the computer in one position without moving for hours.
Pain in the neck, shoulder, or anywhere from the shoulder to fingers
Using muscles in an awkward position.
Experience stiffness, pain or swelling in that area.
Twisting the wrist to use the mouse.
Specific typing technique that causes stretching of fingers or pressure on the
wrist.
Carpal tunnel syndrome.
Vision problems
Blurred vision, doubled vision, dry and red eyes, eye irritation.
Constantly focusing on the screen without blinking can cause dry eyes.
Computers build up an electrostatic charge in the vicinity of the screen surface.
Static charges can cause the attraction and accumulation of dust and other
airborne particles on the face of the computer screen.
3. These charges lead to eye irritation in some very sensitive people.
Bright light and bad glare or flickering image can strain your eyes.
Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).
Working at a computer requires that the eyes continuously focus.
Eyes have to accommodate to changing images on the screen.
Requires a lot of effort from eye muscles.
Health problems
Sedentary lifestyle and obesity.
Spends hours and hours on the computer.
Not getting enough exercise and movement.
Forget to have meals, unscheduled meals, loss of appetite.
Results in mal-nutrition.
Seldom drink water because there’s no sweating to enable water loss.
Dehydration and bad for kidneys.
Computers emit vapors that can cause ear and skin conditions along with throat
problems.
Skin and throat itchiness.
Long-term sleep deprivation because of late-night computer sessions.
Results in loss of concentration, dizziness and weariness.
4. Problems Cause by Over Usage of Computers
In this era of globalization, the usage of computers had truly become an
inseparable part of human lives and acted as an essential tool in every field. This
had resulted in the over usage of computers where people spent almost the
whole day facing that rectangular screen. However, many people do not know
the consequences of doing so. There are three main problems caused by the
over usage of computers namely musculoskeletal problems, vision problems and
health problems.
Musculoskeletal problems is one of the consequences due to the over
usage of computers. For example, sitting in front of the computer in one fixed
position without moving for several hours will result in having muscle soreness
and muscle fatigues which includes chronic pain, aches, tension and poor blood
circulation all over the body. Other musculoskeletal problems like back pain,
chest pain, numbness or pain in arms, neck, shoulders and feet will occur due to
the incorrect sitting posture when using the computer for a long period. Shraddha
(2014) indicated that carpal tunnel syndrome, which is known as a disorder
associated with the peripheral nervous system which includes nerves and
ganglia located outside the spinal cord and brain will occur due the compression
of the median nerve at the wrist. This will result in numbness, tingling, weakness
or muscle atrophy in the hand and fingers. All these disorders are due to the
twisting of wrist when using the mouse or specific typing techniques that requires
stretching of the fingers. Therefore, the over usage of computer can lead to
various musculoskeletal problems which will bring much discomfort to the
computer users.
5. The next problem which can result from the over usage of computers is
vision problems, for instant having blurred vision, doubled vision, eye irritation, as
well as dry and red eyes. The emission of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation that
includes infrared and ultraviolet rays will diminish the visibility of the eyes which
will further leads to short-sightedness with blurred and doubled vision. One will
have to depend on eyeglasses to have a clearer vision which will brings about
constant rise in the power of the glasses. On the other hand, constant focus on
the computer screen without blinking or resting can cause dry eyes. According to
St. Louis (1997), computers build up an electrostatic charge in the vicinity of the
screen surface where the static charges can cause attraction and accumulation
of dust and other airborne particles on the computer screen which will lead to eye
irritation. The over usage of computers will also result in Computer Vision
Syndrome (CVS) due to the bright light and bad glare of flickering image which
will strain the eyes as continuous focus is required when accommodating with
changing images on the screen. Therefore, the over usage of computers can
result in vision problems.
The third problem that will arise due to the over usage of computers is
health problems. Computer users will undergo obesity due to the sedentary
lifestyle with no or irregular physical activity. At the same time, they are
colloquially known as a couch potato as hours are spent on the computer without
a single movement. Calories from food and drinks are unable to be burnt due to
the inactive lifestyle they lead which will give rise to obesity. Abdallah H. (2012)
had stated that staying in front of the computer for a long period via daily basis
will raise the risk of having coronary heart disease, high blood pressure,
diabetes, colon cancer and many other health problems. Some even forget to
6. have meals as they ended up by having unscheduled meals everyday which will
lead to mal-nutrition. Health problems can be brought up due to dehydration of
the body as computer users are too fond with their works and seldom or even
forget to drink water which will cause kidney failures. Computers also emit vapors
that can cause ear and skin conditions along with throat problems. Long-term
sleep deprivation because of late night computer sessions can result in loss of
concentration, dizziness and weariness which will indirectly stir up many heath
problems. Therefore, various health problems can be cause by the over usage of
computer everyday.
In conclusion, the over usage of computer will lead to three main problems
namely musculoskeletal problems, vision problems and health problems.
Therefore, computer users who are over using their computers everyday must
plan their time well with much discipline so as to finish their works on time and at
the same time to relax and lead a healthy lifestyle.
