The highest prevalence rate is 65.6% in the central region of Sub–Sahara Africa and lowest in
eastern region of Asia with a 16.3% prevalence rate. Even at the lowest rate of occurrence, it can be
seen as one in every ten women is being abused by their intimate partner.
A Study on Factors Linked to IPV
Understanding the reasons behind domestic violence can bring about predictors and help provide
solutions for future education and deterrence. Intimate partner violence is not a one dimensional
subject, most often, a victim is not being abused by a partner out of just emotional outbursts–there
are many more factors that come into play when it comes to domestic violence. Abramsky et al.,
interviewed a total of 24,097 women from 10 different countries using standardized questionnaires–
the countries of Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Japan, Namibia, Peru, Republic of Tanzania, Samoa, Serbia,
Montenegro and Thailand. The questions asked were in regards to IPV with the women's past and
present partners, "whether they experienced specific violent acts, and if so whether this had
happened in the 12 months preceding the survey" (Abramsky et al., 2011). The women's answers
were compared to one another for analysis and risk factors were deduced from associations within
the answered surveys.

Physical, sexual & psychological violence perpetrated or condoned by the state, wherever it occurs
Gender–based violence both reflects & reinforces inequities between men & women & comprises
the health, dignity, security & autonomy of its victims. It encompasses a wide range of human rights
violations, including sexual abuse of children, rape, domestic violence, sexual assault & harassment,
trafficking of women & girls & several harmful traditional practices. Any one of these abuses can
leave deep psychological scars, damage the health of women & girls in general, including their
reproductive & sexual health, & in some instances, result in death.
We know that VAW is an atrocious human rights violation, a public health epidemic & a barrier to
solving global challenges such as extreme poverty, HIV/AIDS & conflict. It devastates the lives of
millions of women & girls & knows no national or cultural barriers. It is a mass phenomenon taking
many different forms with disastrous consequences for women's & girls health & survival. The
social & economic costs resulting from this abuse place a substantial burden on society as
significantly hampering development. Therefore preventing VAW & girls is also a key contribution
to achieving most of the UN millennium development goals & to reduce poverty.
VAW is a yardstick by which one can measure the

Sexual Violence And Gender Based Violence Against Women...
3.1. Sexual violence and gender based violence against women and girls
Wartime sexual and gender based violence is one of the main concerns of SCR 1325. Violence
against women in the forms of rape, torture, sexual slavery, forced pregnancy, forced sterilization
and murder has increasing become a routine weapon of war (Willett, 2010, pp. 153–154). A further
concern is the persistence of widespread sexual violence, even after political stabilisation, where
sexual violence becomes a 'normal' part of society and its systems. Sexual and gender based
violence, including the threat of violence, is a powerful tactic of war that services to exclude
women's participation and enforce their victimisation and subservience (Willett, 2010, pp. 154).

These include; Ministry of Women affairs, Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission,
Elimination of Violence Against Women Commission, Elimination of Violence Against Women
Prosecution Office, Family Courts and Gender Units in many ministries, and inter–ministerial
committees (Ebrahimkhel, 2013, p. 1). In 2009, the Law on the Elimination of Violence Against
Women was (EVAW) decreed into law by an executive order by the President. The EVAW law
banned and set new penalties for underage and forced marriage, domestic violence, rape, forced
prostitution, and other abuses against women (Ebrahimkhel, 2013, p. 2).
Despite the Government's efforts, a number of reports demonstrate an alarming increase in violence
against women over recent years (Hamid, 2011, pp. 31; Cameron & Kamminga, 2014, pp. 8–9;
UNAMA & UN OHCHR, 2015, pp. 7–9). Women report cases of physical abuse, forced marriages,
and the continued existence of entrenched cultural practices, such as baad (the exchange of women
and girls to end family feuds).
There is a lack of official primary and comprehensive data on violence against women in
Afghanistan. The Government of Afghanistan reported 4,505 registered incidents of violence against
women in 32 of the 34 provinces, between March 2012 to March 2013 (Islamic Republic of
Afghanistan, Ministry of Women's Affairs, 2014, pp. 8). Registered cases refers to any incident of

Women Are Discriminated Against The Workplace
There is no debate on whether women are discriminated against in the workplace. It is evident in
census data; in 1998 women made $.73 to the dollar of which was paid to men. Even today, there is
still a pay gap that exists between women and men. It is said that some of the organizations that are
pro–equal pay, including some unions, support the idea that the government should set wages for all
jobs. To the contrary, the organizations that are proponents of equal pay are not for job wages being
set by the government. They wish to have the discrimination taken out of pay scales from within the
company. Commonly, this pay gap is attributed to the fact that women in the United States are still
expected to attend to familial obligations over work. Data shows that women do attend to family
obligations, like having a child, caring for a sick family member, or caring for an elder; but they also
do not give up on work. Yes, women often chose lower paying jobs in exchange for flexible hours
and do spend a lower number of hours per week long–term at their jobs than their male counterparts.
Because women are socialized to be the primary care givers they are kept at these lower paying jobs
that are more flexible, the jobs allow them to care for their family yet still retain an income (possibly
a second income for the household). Women's changing roles in society has resulted in this
workplace problem. Women are allowed and often encouraged to work but they are not rewarded or

Sexual Harassment And Sexual Violence Essay
North eastern women who come to Delhi to work or for academic pursuits encounter cruel and
uncouth behaviour from uncivilised people of Delhi. They are racially discriminated because of their
distinctive features and sexually abused because of their vulnerability. This study focuses on
discussing the sexual harassment and sexual violence that the north eastern women have been facing
in Delhi, causes that are responsible for such happening and various aspects related to this issue.
The study was initially planned on a sample of 100 north eastern women residing in Delhi, however
the researcher could contact only 92 women. A questionnaire was administered to them individually
contacting them through snowball method. The results showed that, 96% women had faced sexual
harassment in Delhi, between sexual racial and cultural discrimination 64% of women reported that
they face sexual harassment followed by 35% who reported racial discrimination and 1% who
reported cultural discrimination. 42% women had faced eve teasing, 18% faced stalking, 20% faced
physical touches, 14% had faced sexual violence, 3% got sexual calls and messages and 3%
reported that they had faced all types of harassment , when asked whether men harassing them were

can interfere with one's job opportunities and livelihood. In the case, Christian Emergency Services
Supervisory Officer Denied Religious Accommodation and Subjected to Harassment at Keystone
Resort, the victim, Lisa Marie Cornwell, an emergency services supervisor at the Keystone Resort,
was subjected to harassment for not only her Christian religion but for her gender as well. She was
denied religious accommodation and treated less favorably than her male counterparts. The EEOC
said that Cornwell's supervisor, Rick Garcia, banned her and another Christian employee from
discussing their Christian beliefs and would not allow them to listen to Christian music while on
duty. Moreover, according to the EEOC, Garcia ridiculed Cornwell for asking for scheduling
accommodation so that she could attend her desired religious services, and denied her requests while
scheduling lower ranking officers for the shifts she requested. On top of that, Cornwall was also
sexually harassed, so she went through a lot. According to the EEOC, Cornwell could have been
scheduled so that she could attend her religious services, without any cost or disruption to Vail's
business operations, and the company was required by law to make an accommodation. Also, Title

Women 's Voices Feminist Visions
Will Rogers the famous Vaudeville performer once stated, "We will never have true civilization until
we have learned to recognize the rights of others". Rogers' statement is a very intelligent one; equal
rights for all people is the next big step for humanity. Susan Shaw states in her book Women's
Voices Feminist Visions, "Feminism, of course, affirms and works to maintain difference; it merely
asks that these differences be valued equally". Feminism seeks to create equality amongst men and
women, this means all women regardless of race, ethnicity, class, or sexuality deserve equal rights.
Therefore, LGBT, race, ethnicity, transgender, and reproductive rights are issues of concern to
women's rights activists. Despite the post–feminist myth that equality has been reached, there are
still multiple contemporary issues which deserve feminist attention. Violence against women,
economic inequality, and social construction of gender, the body, and sexuality are all issues present
in modern society which are of concern to women's rights activists. Although it takes time, progress
is being made toward total equality thanks to education and activist groups which raise awareness
about inequality in the United States as well as around the world. Feminism is an ideology which
aims to create a world without inequality, specifically gender inequality. Therefore, absolute equality
is the central issue for contemporary feminist advocates.
Gender violence is a major issue present in

Reflection Of A Critical Thinking Portfolio
Reflection Critical Thinking Portfolio
Introduction
This reflection will be an attempt to describe and consider more consciously the topic that I chose to
investigate. I will explain in details the information that I have gathered in the portfolio. I chose to
look at gender and why women are still held back in society. Gender inequality is defined as unequal
treatment of individuals based on their gender. I will briefly discuss issues of unequal pay and
sexual violence against women in the UK. Time immemorial it has been women that have been on
the receiving end of this imbalanced economy, political and social system. I am therefore going to
look into the causes and how these imbalances have affected the woman folk. This is despite being a
greater majority of the world population.
According to the information, I collected it seems that it will take years and years for things to
change. Being a woman, this work has been an eye opener to facts about how we are regarded by
men and has taught me lessons on what to do in order to succeed in a male–dominated world. The
sources and information about gender inequality are readily available as this is a topic that has been
on peoples' minds for centuries, therefore, a lot of research has been done to ascertain just why
women don't seem to thrive in a male–dominated industry and what is being done to change
perceptions of men. I believe it is true that the 21st Century has brought many changes as far as
gender equality is

Students who are English language learners have been discriminated against and have had more
challenges than any of the normal students in all school district around the United States. Teachers
were not given the necessary tools and provided the necessary training to teach them. Teachers and
Students encounter ESOL related problems almost daily. It has taken decades of trials, Acts, and

The survey asks "is a language other than English used at home?", "Does the student have a first
language other than English?", and "does the student most frequently speak a language other than
English?". The second requirement involves an ELL Committee, a team comprised of ESOL
teachers, a home language teacher, parents, guidance counselor, social worker, and other educators'
responsible for putting together and determining the eligibility of a student for an ESOL program.
The third requirement is the ELL Student Plan which is a written document that identifies the
student's name, instruction by program, including programs other than ESOL, amount of
instructional time, date of ELL identification, and assessment data used to classify as ELL. Each
student must have their own individual copy of a plan. The forth requirement is English Language
Assessment that is required in areas of listening comprehension, speaking, writing, and reading. The
fifth requirement is Classification and Reclassification where students classified as ELL continue to
receive instruction until such time as the student is reclassified as English proficient. The sixth
requirement is Post–reclassification Monitoring where the performance of the students who have
been exited from their ESOL program must be reviewed to see if any patterns of continuing
performance appropriate for tests and other assessments.

Indian Children Discriminated Against And Denied A Basic...
Indian Children Discriminated Against and Denied a Basic Education Every year in India, millions
of children are being discriminated and even denied an education, occurring in four of their major
states ("HRW"). Although, four years ago, India established a law preventing this from occurring,
allowing a person in India from ages 6 to 14 a basic education; but at the same time schools are not
upholding these laws ("India Needs"). This could be due to the fact that India is a third world,
developing country, who do not have education on the top of their priority list, trying to solve/
improve the massive poverty rate. We as a common group of people need to stop this from occurring
in India in order to uphold the common good. One of the possible solutions discussed in one of the
articles I read, suggested that India create a system in which they monitor every child of every grade
throughout the time they enroll to the time they complete middle school (grade eight)("HRW").
Another solution that came up, seeming to be very obvious is the proper training of the teachers.
This would allow the children at a better education through the validity of their teaching. Although
these projects seem difficult, at the same time it would be a worthy one as well ("International
Dalit"), demonstrating our concern to those less fortunate who are in need of support. A current
violation of this basic human right, of denying children of an education, and in some circumstances

Stakeholders
Everyone has different point of views. The Ottawa Federal government discriminated against the
first nations elsewhere people from the government opposed their decisions. In the following
paragraphs I would be discussing about the different stakeholders and their opinions on
discrimination of the First Nations.
In 2013 Ottawa federal government had discriminated child welfare services for the Natives. The
federal government took multiple attempts to get the case thrown out. The federal government
discriminated because the support that feds provide for child welfare on reserves is much lower than
what kids off reserve get from provincial government although the need is greater.
The government discriminated for the reason of money. They had a low budget. Blackstock said the
government is stalling and the lack of movement is putting the First Nations children at risk. ...

Aboriginal Domestic Violence
1.0 The literature of Indigenous violence – Qualitative and Quantitate Analysis
Domestic Violence pervasiveness amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in
contemporary society is a menacing topic that is often neglected by the Australian government,
regardless of its severity. The definition of Domestic violence amongst Indigenous Australians and
its causes differ from the general understanding the Australians have of the term. This report will
examine the literature of domestic violence, elaborate on statistic and findings, provide perspectives
on stakeholders, support the hypothesis and offer recommendations.

Other evidence, such as Appendix 2, indicates that domestic violence rates are higher in regional,
rural and remote areas. An area such Aurukun, located in North Western Queensland (Cape York), is
an Indigenous community which has experienced all forms of violence. Similarly, Alice Springs
communities and other remote communities in the Northern Territory are also susceptible to
domestic violence.
The causes of domestic violence amongst Indigenous Australians is not attributable to Aboriginal
culture. Instead, the patterns of current domestic violence originate from the violent dispossession of
the land between the Europeans settlers and Indigenous Australians.
Other influences of domestic violence are issues such as Childhood experience of violence and
abuse, High incarceration rates, Financial problems, Unemployment, Poor health, Lack of
education, Racism Loss of land and traditional culture can contribute to domestic violence

Non Aboriginal Women
One native woman from the Native Women's Association of Canada expresses "it is an exception
rather than the rule to know of an Aboriginal woman who has not experienced some form of family
violence throughout her life" (Canadian Council on Social Development and Native Women's
Association of Canada 1991, p. 25). According to the General Social Survey (2009) conducted in the
ten provinces, Aboriginal women were nearly three times more likely to be a victim of a violent
crime than non–Aboriginal women, this was true regardless of whether the violence was perpetrated
by a stranger or by a spouse (Brennan, 2011). However, Aboriginal women not only face more
recurrent incidences of family violence, but also wider social violences, which is also ... Show more

The impacts of structural and/or institutional racism have been experienced across generations by
Aboriginals and have resulted in the collective wounds which are not easily healed. Aboriginals who
experienced social exclusion as a form of racial discrimination are far more involved in substance
use and alcoholism. In addition, there is a strong association between racism and self esteem
(Reading & Wien, 2013). Similarly, the historical and contemporary trauma resulted from loss of
land; marginalization, incarceration, residential schools, abuse and violence, and lack of governance
affect the overall mental health of aboriginal communities in Canada (Haskell & Randall, 2009;
Gee, & Ford, 2011). These points have merit. However, as stated previously, family violence,
replicates the anguish and pain of all family members, including the perpetrator. The impacts of this
violence on victims, often leads to higher risk of developing mental health problems, psychological
problems and low self esteem (Andersson & Nahwegahbow, 2010). Similarly, the Aboriginal
women are more vulnerable to family violence for a number of reasons including racism,
marginalization and poverty (Amnesty International, 2014). Internationally, in many communities,

Domestic Violence : A Common Form Of Family Violence
Domestic Violence
Domestic violence (D V) occurs in almost every society and culture of the world. It can be physical,
sexual, emotional, or psychological actions or threats of actions that influences another person. It is
behaviors that intimidates, manipulate, humiliate, isolate, frighten, stalk, terrorize, coerce, threaten,
blame, hurt, injure, and wound someone. It affects mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers of nearly every
person in our community either directly or indirectly. What is Domestic Violence?
Domestic Violence is described as violent or hostile behavior within the home, typically involving
the violent abuse of a spouse or partner. It is a common form of family violence that may contain not
only physical abuse, but one or more of emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and economical/finical
abuse. Physical abuse can be pulling your hair, punching, slapping, kicking, biting or choking you it
also includes denying a partner medical care or forcing you to use drugs or alcohol. Emotional abuse
is when somebody is trying to isolate you from family or friends, monitoring where you go, who
you call and who you spend time with, and demanding to know where you are every minute. Sexual
Abuse is forcing you to dress in a sexual ways, holding you down during sex, threatening to hurt
you, the children, your family or your pets and even to the extremes of purposefully trying to pass

Antigone’s Purpose
Brooks Fridey
Antigone's Purpose
In the story of Antigone, originally written by Sophocles, explains the story, of a woman who stands
up for her own beliefs against the king. At the time of Sophocles, women had little power and
authority. They were expected to listen to their husband, king, or any man that speaks to or asks a
woman of something. The story starts up where the story of Oedipus ends, in his death. Trouble and
war are about to begin in Thebes, so Antigone travels there to try and stop what may become of her
family and country. From my observations, this story can be analyzed in multiple ways, whether it is
about the struggles of women, defying the higher power, or responding to the will of the gods. It is

To Antigone, it is not necessary that someone should obey their leader at all times. She believes
what Creon declared to happen to her brothers was unfair and that the gods were telling her she
needed to bury her brother. Antigone was unapproved to the treatment of women in these times, and
that the king must be obeyed in all causes. She believed the gods were the true powers, and bad
things would come upon you if you did not cooperate with their requests. When Haemon comes into
the story, acknowledged as Antigone's fiancée, who is the son of Creon, makes it clear why
Antigone was even still alive. Although Creon was cruel and often harsh, there was still something
or someone holding him back from simply killing her. Haemon told his father it would be wrong to
kill Antigone and would bring great mourning to the people of Thebes following her death. He
wants Creon to be open to others views, but Creon responds by calling Haemon a woman's slave for
backing up a woman and not his own father. A blind prophet advises Creon that he should properly
bury Polyneices and release Antigone. He says if he does not he will greatly anger the gods, and
might create his own misfortune for his disobedience. Possibly leading to his own death. As Creon
ponders his possibilities and future, he finally decides to release Antigone and bury Polyneices. As
he thought he was then making the right decision, he would soon find out what his

Violence Against Women Is An Old Fashioned Practice
Throughout the years, violence against women has become a national issue, often referred to as a
"hidden epidemic" by Amnesty International, which spreads through social, cultural and ethnic
areas. The cost of sexual and domestic violence creates a ripple effect throughout today's society; for
example, discrimination of race, ethnicity, and age prevents women from obtaining any form of
justice. Violence against women is an old–fashioned practice, but in the last decade it finally
received recognition as a serious human rights issue. Violence against women is categorized into
two parts: social violence, which occurs in public places between strangers, and domestic violence,
which takes place within households and usually between family members. A prevalent and
particular problem area includes psychological issues; women become depressed, isolate
themselves, develop sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), commit suicide, depend on drugs and
alcohol, develop poor reproductive health, and become incapable of supporting their families. Men
and children are at risk of becoming perpetrators due to exposure of violence within households, low
education, and childhood abuse. Education plays an important role in today's society about
spreading awareness of violence against women. The World Health Organization, the Avon
Foundation for Women, and Amnesty International, and the producers/authors of Half the Sky:

Violence against women is a very serious and sensitive issue as it is one of the most pervasive of
human rights violation denying fundamental rights to almost half of population (females and
girls).Domestic violence is much more drastic than violence outside because home is a place where
individual seeks love, security, safety and shelter but we can't deny the fact that it is also a place that

Violence is used as a weapon to exert power over others. It's a misconception that violence against
female is generated by males only. In reality it is of both types inter–sex and intra–sex. Even mother
who bears equal labor pains during birth of her children discriminates between her son and daughter.
In India where domestic violence persists in want of dowry females also play their role in
victimizing women. Husband is not the only accused in bride burning cases participation of females
like mother–in–law and sister–in–law are also included. Another great cause of domestic violence in
India is want of male child. Researches indicate that 30%of the abuse starts during pregnancy;
during which a woman needs special care and attention; they are deprived of basic amenities like
medicines and healthy diet even during pregnancy. Nearly about two third of females are anaemic
which leads to death of mother or child during child birth. Early marriages, forced marriages, honor
killing , acid throwing, trafficking, rape, sexual abuse, female foeticide and female infanticide ,
neglect of women health problems , compelling and humiliating women, alcoholism of the husband
are some of the other forms of violence against women in India. Forced prostitution due to poverty
is also very common in some Indian states. Husband's infedility is also a major cause of
psychological violence in most of the cases. Wife battering is very common and there

Analysis Of The Movie ' North Country '
The movie "North Country" is based on a coal–mining town in northern Minnesota. Josey Aimes
leaves her abusive husband with her two children and decides to move in with her parents. Josey
started with a job shampooing in a nearby hair salon, but it was not enough to support her family.
Therefore, she decided to take a job at the coal mine where her father works also. Her first few days
working in the mine seemed to be okay, but she then realized the women were targets of
discrimination and sexual harassment.
One day at the mine, Josey was attacked by one of the male employees and she then called its quits
with mining. For this reason, Josey decided to take legal action, by suing the mining company for
discrimination and sexual harassment. At first, Josey was alone when trying to win the case against
the company. Many of the other women preferred not to testify because they were afraid they would
lose their source of income or get treated even worst once they returned to the mine. Josey was very
brave for standing up for what was right, she then inspired the other women to speak up by telling
her story. Eventually Josey was able to win her case against the Pearson mining company with the
help of the other women testimonies.
Sexual harassment was a major problem for the women working in the mine. The men would write
horrible slurs about the women in their locker room. Josey would always turn to her boss about the
constant sexual aggression towards her. But her boss did not

Before taking women's studies course, my knowledge about feminist issue was limited and I was not
aware that how social inequality affects women's lives in our society today, it is really a shame how
women are being treated so unfair. After now I am in my last week of this course, I realized that my
awareness of the history and experiences of women increased throughout all aspects of society.
According to the textbook Feminism is for Everybody Passionate Politics by Bell Hooks, I have
learned about the definition of feminism and what it means to truly be a feminist in todays world.
Feminism is simply defined as "a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression"

Although women do get involved in leadership position but they are often being discriminated
against by the society due to their gender. It is rare for a woman to reach the highest level of
employment such as CEO or a boss as the man is usually the one society sees should be the leader
not the woman. Even though we live in the 21st century, gender inequality issue is still a major
problem towards women nowadays. This is due to the fact that women are often underrepresented in
the society with the dominance of males overemphasized. Although inequality in women still exists
especially in workplace, but things are changing now. Women are currently more improved in their
leadership roles. As a result, they are undoubtedly suitable for running higher and more qualified

Promoting Gender Equality and Empowering Women
Introduction
As a child, I had always believed that there was only one difference between girls or boys, one of
them has cooties, besides that I had always thought of them as equals. As I grew out of that young
and venerable age, I slowly started to realize that even in first world countries, women were being
oppressed. They weren't seen as equals, simply because of their gender, not because of experience or
knowledge, just because they are women. If it took me that long to find out how sexist, a developed
country is how long will it take everyone. It is common knowledge, that life is better, but it is not
common knowledge that the discrimination is the same. That was when I had my doubts, will there
be any foundations that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Human Trafficking Human trafficking is the illegal practice of procuring or trading in human beings
for the purpose of prostitution, forced labor, or other forms of exploitation, basically it means
exploiting human beings for one's gain. This is a human rights violation and an extreme form of
abuse, some scary but true facts about Human Trafficking are 78% of Canadians agree that girls
under the age of 16 are not in prostitution by choice, 67% of Canadians agree that Canadian girls
under the age of 16 are being recruited/trafficked to work in prostitution against their will and
70% of Canadians agree that women are brought into Canada from other countries and forced to
work in prostitution against their will.
So if this is such a big problem, what is The Canadian Women's Foundation doing about this. Well
firstly they are investing nearly $1 million to fund organizations across Canada that prevent
trafficking and help girls and women escape sex trafficking and rebuild their lives from that. The
Canadian Women's Foundation, however is mostly focused on addressing the needs of vulnerable
young girls who have been forced into prostitution.
Empowering Girls The Canadian Women's Foundation wants every girl to believe in themselves and
know that they matter; they empower girls by investing millions in programs across Canada, which
encourage, physical activity, learning and leadership. This has proven to increase the girls' self–
confidence and overall

Susan Sontag's View on Interpretation and its Applications and Analysis Using Bedlam Painting
Number Eight
Interpretation has been a phenomenon existing from the time immemorial. There has been a long
tradition of interpretation, in all occupations. Interpretation of arts and literature has gone to an
extent that it has taken shape of a discipline and has grown as a methodology and an art itself. Eliot
even says, "We might remind ourselves that criticism is as inevitable as breathing". Method of
Interpretation has long been a subject of discussion among intellectual circles and it has been subject
to a constant evolution ever since it came into being. Moreover, the conventional methods have
always been circling around the dynamics of relationship of the signifier and the signified, a
discourse upon meaning of a work of art. Sontag has proposed an objection towards the traditional
methods of such kind. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She says in the essay, "I don't mean interpretation in the broadest sense, the sense in which
Nietzsche (rightly) says, 'There are no facts, only interpretations.' By interpretation, I mean here a
conscious act of the mind which illustrates a certain code, certain 'rules' of interpretation." Sontag is
opposed to the criticism of a kind where a critic is given all authority to assign meaning to a work of
art according to his/her own whims and

The Proposal I Am Putting Forth Focusses On Violence...
Part 1: Prevalence, Definition, and Parameters (600) 830
The proposal I am putting forth focusses on violence against women. I will particularly be looking
at violence against women in Fiji and how this type of violence affects the economy and therefore
society on the whole. Gender based violence is a direct result of gender inequality. GBV puts health,
security, autonomy and dignity at high risk. (Secretariat of the Pacific Community, 2009) It pertains
to a huge variety of human rights violations which include, rape, sexual assault, harassment,
domestic violence, sexual abuse of children and traditional practices that inevitably lead to harm.
Though it is the least recognised human rights abuse globally, violence against women is relevant
worldwide regardless of socio–economic status, religion or race. In fact, one in three women will be
beaten or otherwise abused at some point in their life according to UN reports. (United Nations
Department of public information, 2008) Domestic violence perpetuates gender inequality, limits
economic potential and hinders the overall health and well–being of our population. Studies are
indicative of the effect of gender based violence, not only because it is a direct violation of human
rights [R] but also pertains to the grave impacts on the economy through legal, health and household
costs caused. [R] There is an extensive series of losses to the economy that flow on from violence
against women including a loss in the amount of

The Role Of Religion In A Thousand Splendid Suns
A Thousand Splendid Suns Essay
Is religion alone that powerful enough to coerce an abundance of immigrants to start afresh with a
new country? One of the main reasons immigrants move to the United States or any nation for that
matter is for religious freedom and independence. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, readers follow the
lives and narratives of two different women and their struggle to survive their brutal society.
Through the book, the subject of religion and its impact on the two women is broached and further
explored. In Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns, religion serves as justification of several
aspects of the Afghan society; religion is used to justify violence, patriarchy, and discrimination
against women and other minority groups.
Religion is used by men and women alike to account for the validity of domestic violence towards
women and violence in general.
In most societies, men feel the need to reinforce the idea of their superiority upon women, so thus
they use religion to prove their dominance. A Talib told Mariam of how 'God made us
differently'(Hosseini 324). These "differences" that the Talib speaks of is one of main ways
patriarchy is defended, since God made man and woman differently, the Afghan community
assumes that they must be treated differently as well. Also, there must be one sex that is superior to
the other then, many communities along with the Afghan community chose to place men above
women due to sexist beliefs of the

Domestic Violence And Its Effects On The Social And Health...
Domestic violence has been a main issue throughout history, and all over the world, abuse has been
recurring on children, the elderly, women, and even men. However, a significant portion of domestic
abuse cases are seen against women. Globally, women are facing struggles physically, socially and
mentally because they are constantly being abused by men and significant others since it can be
done by their female partner or even their parents/in–laws. In the past few years, the issue of
domestic violence has gained the attention for research; studies have shown that it is a global issue
that impacts negatively on the social and health status of individuals, women in particular. A survey
of domestic abuse in Canada signifies that 29 per cent of married women have been abused by their
partners at least once (Nwosu, 2006). However, there are several services that contribute towards
preventing abuse against women. There are public interest groups and social workers who provide to
solve these issues. Citizens who want a change in the society form a public interest groups that is
providing for the whole community. Public interest groups promote issues that are affecting the
society. Likewise, social workers are involved in women's issues as they are playing a part to
decrease the inequality that is becoming more perceived. They are doing this by counselling women
and men, hence guiding them on the right path. Correspondingly, in politics it requires equal

Mental health is a person's condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well–being.
This assignment is completed in regards to the informing about the consequences of mental health
patients being stigmatized and discriminated against. Based on the article, chapter one talked about
how stigma is a mark of disgrace that is associated with a particular circumstance, quality, or person.
With it being so powerful, stigma against the mentally ill has been codified into federal law for 50
years; and with that, only a few mental health systems even realize it. Embedded in Medicaid and
Medicare laws, this system's discrimination has accelerated the psychiatric state of the emptying of
hospitals, leaving a majority of patients sick and the most defenseless patients with not anywhere to
turn. This is an issue that needs to be addressed. With the help of USA TODAY, advocates and
experts spoke up and were describing a system in shambles, and had been neglecting millions of
starved funding people each year across the country. Patrick Kennedy, a former congressman from
Rhode Island who has fought to provide for better care for the mentally ill, had organized a report.
He says that he found in both the community and in hospitals the failure of providing treatment and
supportive services to people with mental illness which has resulted to an overstrain in the
emergency rooms. This has led to an effect which has congested the local and state jails as well as to

The Apartheid Of South Africa
During the year of 1948, the lives of south Africans changed forever. The National Party, which was
an all–white government, gained power and created hell for non–white citizens, their goal was to
have white people continue to dominate the country and to keep each race separated from each
other; even though at the time whites were only 20% of the population. The apartheid, which
literally means "apartness" lasted until 1991, and during this time many acts were passed. One being
that "non–white Africans were forced to live in separate areas from whites, and use public facilities
separately. Contact between groups was limited." (History.com) As for woman specifically, since
they are "regarded as dependents and are inferior to men..." (anc.org) they were even further
discriminated against during the apartheid. In rural areas, specifically, a woman's workload
increased dramatically as they tried to produce enough food off the land to feed their families. Many
men were absent from their rural homes due to being a migrant laborer, which were poorly paid. The
combined workload of caring for a family, the land, and themselves all alone, is the direct result of
apartheid laws. When the apartheid ended, the hardships still effected everyone's lives, and not in a
good way. In the novel, Disgrace by J.M Coetzee a young woman named Lucy lives in south Africa
after the apartheid, or post–apartheid, on a farm alone. Her father David eventually comes to live
with her because he lost his job

uncouth behaviour from uncivilised people of Delhi.

Women 's Rights : Myth Or Truth?
Alexia Martin Mrs. Akelman AP Language and Composition 24 February 2016 Women's Rights:
Myth or Truth? In our first American history class, we learn about the battles we won, disasters we
dodged, and equality we achieved. We learn about religious freedom, how slaves were freed, and
how women gained the right to vote in 1920. Focussing on the victories allows us to disregard the
inequality that is ever present in our society today. We turn a blind eye to the blatant discrimination,
and many accept it and believe America is completely equal. While America has improved tenfold
over the many years due to protests and reformation, our country still has a very long way to go.
There is still racial prejudice, controversy over sexuality, and ... Show more content on

This statistic alone shows that women are viewed as less important and unworthy of the same
financial stability that a man is entitled to. This is an important issue because women are the
breadwinners for more than 50% of American households. (The White House) Families and children
depend on women to get a substantial income, and without receiving as high of a salary as a man,
the households who rely on women are at a disadvantage. Simple school supplies, medical expenses,
and college tuition are all harder to obtain and pay for for those families who rely on women to
provide the bulk or all of the income. It takes mothers an extra six months to acquire the same
amount of money that fathers earn in one year, which sets them back and makes it harder for women
to live a life equal to that of a man. (The White House) While the Equal Pay Act was put into place
in 1963, the pay gap definitely still exists. This shows that even though there are restrictions on
unequal pay, somehow businesses and corporations are getting around it and allowing men to make
more money than women. Some may say that there are obvious solutions to this pay gap. They say
that women should receive a higher education to allow them to get higher paying jobs, or apply to
executive positions in order to close the pay gap. These so called solutions are not well thought out
and are completely wrong, because studies show that any level of education, from high

Being AAndrogynous Person Is Not A Bad Thing
Through the centuries, women's issues have been improved dramatically; however, women are still
suffering from various problems in both physically and mentally. After taking this class, there are
may concepts change in my mind, and these changes lead me to view men and women differently,
including some different views on myself. Honestly, I have never thought that I am a androgynous
person before, and it is still hard to admit for me. In my opinion, I think as a men, I must be tough
and masculine; nevertheless, not physically but psychologically, I show some women's
characteristics as well. When I gradually understand more about women, I think being a
androgynous person is not a bad thing. Although there are several criticisms about androgyny have
been raised, gender–role nonconformity still brings some positive thoughts. Just like the textbook
says, "It permits freedom form gender–role stereotypes and allows people to express their opposite–
gender tendencies" (80).
Undoubtedly, I view both men and women differently after I taking this class. Emotionally, I know
that women are more likely to express both positive and negative emotions, but men are supposed to
express only anger, contempt, and pride. Culturally, women are defined as less powerful group, and
the traditional thought is they should be dominated by men. Now I think that is misconception, and
the most important concept I have learned from this class is that there is no difference between men
and women. Men are not

Femicide in Mexico: A National Cancer

Throughout the history of the world, patriarchy has been rooted into the very essence of our lives,
shaping our thoughts and actions. Patriarchy is present in virtually every society and unfortunately is
the underlying problem to most violence in the world, particularly violence towards women.
Patriarchy exemplifies the misogyny that has been ever–present since probably the beginning of
every society. Whether it is discrimination towards women, lack of equal rights, or ... Show more

Violence takes many forms: it can be physical, psychological, sexual, economic, and even within
families, or combinations of one or more of these. In most cases, the violence has been "acceptable"
because of the cultural traditions that are largely respected. However, with the increasing emergence
of the women's movement internationally and even within Mexico itself, many Mexican males
regard their roles as belittled. There has been a subtle and sometimes obvious backlash against the
women's movement, especially if women have independent living or income possibilities. In a
culture in which violence is the norm, beatings, rape, torture, mutilation, and even murder are
frequently overlooked. This has been painfully evident in the cases of mass murders of young
women in Ciudad Juarez.
On January 1, 1994, the nations of the United States, Canada, and Mexico entered into a three–way
partnership to supposedly lift trade barriers and improve production in all three countries. This is
called the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). However, the effect was generally
ruinous for southern Mexico. Trans–national corporations from Europe, Asia, and especially North
America invested heavily in closing down factories inside their nations (primarily for environmental
and labor costs) and establishing new ones, almost all of which

discontinue trends of violent masculinity by inviting men into the critical dialogue instead of
portraying them as perpetrators.
Another idea that Jackson Katz I behind is the Bystander approach to gender violence and bullying
prevention. This approach also stops focusing on women as victims and the men as the perpetrators,
and concentrates on the roles of peers in schools, groups, teams, workplaces and other social units.

Domestic Violence Against Women During The United States
Domestic Violence Against Women in the United States Taking a look into America's work industry,
society's values reflect the meaning of domestic violence. In order to gain an understanding of how
societies function, many professionals have observed various factors that contribute to the way
societies work and the specific explanations of social problems, such as domestic violence.
Domestic violence and emotional abuse are behaviors used by one person to control the other.
Victims can be of any age, sex, race, culture, and religion. Although both men and women can be
abused, most victims are women. Domestic violence against women has become a social issue
discussed by many Americans and it has become unacceptable, this paper will focus on the causes,
effects, and solutions to domestic violence against women in the United States, and provide
examples of how it has been changing through the years of 1995 to present. Violence against women
is a substantial public health problem in the United States. According to data from the criminal
justice system, hospital, and medical records, mental health records, social services, and surveys,
thousands of women are injured or killed each year as a result of violence, many by someone they
are involved with or were involved with intimately. Nearly one–third of female homicide victims are
killed by an intimate partner (Federal Bureau of Investigation 2001). Throughout this, many will
read about intimate partner violence also called

Betrayal In Hero Of War

War by Rise Against, Dulce Et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen, Rambo by Ted Ketoheff and War
Pigs by Black sabboth. In the film Rambo. The main character was betrayed by his country, Once he
got back from war for serving his country he was treated like scum. An example of this is when he
was getting sprayed with the fire hose, spat on and abused by citizens of the country he had served
for. My evidence for this is at the end of the movie when Rambo says to the army general

Both the characters were betrayed and sold a fake reality by their generals and recruiters. An
example of this in Hero of War is when it says "He said son, have you seen the world? Well what
would you say if I said you could? Just carry this gun you'll even get paid". In War Pigs it says "
death and hatred to mankind, poisoning their brainwashed minds". In both those examples the song
tells you how they are sold a fake reality and betrayed. My evidence for this is when he says "we
took him away, a bag over his face from his family and his friends, they took of his clothes, they
pissed in his hands, I told them to stop, but then I joined in". This is showing how when he went to
war he was told it will be fun but when reality hit him and he realised he was breaking up family's.
And what the recruiters said to him was a lie. Same as War Pigs when it says "Evil minds that plot
destruction, sorcerer of death's construction, in the field bodies burning, as the war machine keeps
turning". The same as the last piece of evidence he was brainwashed into think war was good but
when they got there and saw everyone dying but that didn't stop the war. In the text. In the text War
Pigs the author wants you to think about what the government tells everyday citizens fake
information to get them into their army. In Hero of War the author wants you to think about how the
army sells you a fake reality and tells you more false from true. It tells you all the behind the scenes
information that only soldiers

Women Are Being Discriminated Against The Workplace
Abstract
No matter how accomplished a woman is within her own right, whether it be her career level
experience or educational background, in most instances she will never be considered equal to a
man, in the workplace, some would think. The problem and or issue is clear, the discrimination
against women in the workplace does exist. Women are being discriminated against in the
workplace in regards to pay, promotions, and overall gender. The law does not feel that a woman
should be discriminated against or overlooked for certain jobs based on their gender. In that regard,
here are laws and protocols in place to protect women in the workplace from discrimination.
Amazing stories from brave women who came forward, stood up, and challenged the companies in
which treated them unfairly will be presented in this paper. This paper looks to show exactly how
women are being discriminated against and why they are being discriminated against. These
answers will be researched and presented in part from well–known magazines and peer–reviewed
journals.
Many times in life, inadvertently, we often times compare men and women. This is not something
that we do to cause harm or malleus, just simple observations. "Aileen Rizo works as a math
specialist at a California county office that supports dozens of school districts. After a few years on
the job, she said she learned over lunch that a man just hired as a math consultant had started at a

The Consequences Of Domestic Violence
Abstract: Domestic violence is something that is overlooked in many aspects. While reading my
paper you will learn about different types of domestic violence. How every type is different than the
other. Each type hurts not only the victim, but everybody in the abuser and the victim's lives.
Children are usually the witnesses in these situations and tend to be caught in the middle. You will
learn how this affects them now and how it affects them later in life. There are also many reasons
that someone turns to domestic violence, and all of those topics will be discussed. Finally, you will
learn about the treatments available and all the ways to get help. After reading this paper I hope that
you will be a little more informed on the consequences of domestic violence. "1 in 3 women and 1
in 4 men have been victims of [some form of] physical violence by an intimate partner within their
lifetime" (Statistics). Domestic violence is one of the things that I think we as people don't take as
serious as other things. Reading that statistic was painfully chilling, and the scariest part is how
much of it goes unnoticed. My favorite part of the statistic was the part where it tells you how many
men have been a victim of this kind of violence, because factually that is something that is always
overlooked. Domestic violence isn't something that should be taken lightly and it definitely
shouldn't be something that is brushed off your shoulders if it happens to you and/or if it's happened

Dog Breeds That Are Discriminated Against Unfairly
There are some dog breeds that are discriminated against unfairly. For example, Pit–Bulls and
associated mixed breeds are known to have targets on their backs. This is thanks to vague and
poorly founded Breed Specific Legislation or "BSL". I am against Breed Specific Legislation, in my
opinion, it a product of the miseducation of the public at large. As well as, a misrepresentation of
entire breeds by a few dogs who, due to circumstances beyond their control acted out in a violent
way. These actions unfortunately, have often brought harm to a human or other living creature.
When you turn on your television you may see a dog food commercial with a happy puppy with its
head tilted to one side, you may also see a car commercial where the boy and the happy–go–lucky
dog grow up together as dad drives the same car year after year. Rarely if ever is the dog in such a
scenario of a Bully or Wolf–Hound breed. This is often attributed to the fact that these particular
canine types look a certain way, exhibit certain behaviors, or maybe they just are not as "cuddly" as
other dog breeds. For reasons as silly and illogical as this, many dogs, and specifically many Pit–
Bulls are put to death, often without cause.
As a kid in the early 90's, I recall that Rottweilers were the "dangerous breed" of the time. Pit–Bulls
and other breeds, now find themselves under that same scrutiny. The fact is, that all dogs can be
dangerous and are capable of harm. It will not be too long until the laws

I can't keep moving and changing my life because of this [expletive]." Cook: "I've been going through this for five years with him. It's still the same thing. I have complaints. If you look up my name, you'll see there are a hundred thousand complaints, but ain't nobody doing nothing." Operator: "When was the last time you called police?" The highest prevalence rate is 65.6% in the central region of Sub–Sahara Africa and lowest in eastern region of Asia with a 16.3% prevalence rate. Even at the lowest rate of occurrence, it can be seen as one in every ten women is being abused by their intimate partner. A Study on Factors Linked to IPV Understanding the reasons behind domestic violence can bring about predictors and help provide solutions for future education and deterrence. Intimate partner violence is not a one dimensional subject, most often, a victim is not being abused by a partner out of just emotional outbursts–there are many more factors that come into play when it comes to domestic violence. Abramsky et al., interviewed a total of 24,097 women from 10 different countries using standardized questionnaires– the countries of Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Japan, Namibia, Peru, Republic of Tanzania, Samoa, Serbia, Montenegro and Thailand. The questions asked were in regards to IPV with the women's past and present partners, "whether they experienced specific violent acts, and if so whether this had happened in the 12 months preceding the survey" (Abramsky et al., 2011). The women's answers were compared to one another for analysis and risk factors were deduced from associations within the answered surveys. • 10. Sexual Violence And Gender Based Violence Against Women... 3.1. Sexual violence and gender based violence against women and girls Wartime sexual and gender based violence is one of the main concerns of SCR 1325. Violence against women in the forms of rape, torture, sexual slavery, forced pregnancy, forced sterilization and murder has increasing become a routine weapon of war (Willett, 2010, pp. 153–154). A further concern is the persistence of widespread sexual violence, even after political stabilisation, where sexual violence becomes a 'normal' part of society and its systems. Sexual and gender based violence, including the threat of violence, is a powerful tactic of war that services to exclude women's participation and enforce their victimisation and subservience (Willett, 2010, pp. 154). These include; Ministry of Women affairs, Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, Elimination of Violence Against Women Commission, Elimination of Violence Against Women Prosecution Office, Family Courts and Gender Units in many ministries, and inter–ministerial committees (Ebrahimkhel, 2013, p. 1). In 2009, the Law on the Elimination of Violence Against Women was (EVAW) decreed into law by an executive order by the President. The EVAW law banned and set new penalties for underage and forced marriage, domestic violence, rape, forced prostitution, and other abuses against women (Ebrahimkhel, 2013, p. 2). Despite the Government's efforts, a number of reports demonstrate an alarming increase in violence against women over recent years (Hamid, 2011, pp. 31; Cameron & Kamminga, 2014, pp. 8–9; UNAMA & UN OHCHR, 2015, pp. 7–9). Women report cases of physical abuse, forced marriages, and the continued existence of entrenched cultural practices, such as baad (the exchange of women and girls to end family feuds). There is a lack of official primary and comprehensive data on violence against women in Afghanistan. The Government of Afghanistan reported 4,505 registered incidents of violence against women in 32 of the 34 provinces, between March 2012 to March 2013 (Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Ministry of Women's Affairs, 2014, pp. 8). • 14. Women Are Discriminated Against The Workplace There is no debate on whether women are discriminated against in the workplace. It is evident in census data; in 1998 women made $.73 to the dollar of which was paid to men. Even today, there is still a pay gap that exists between women and men. It is said that some of the organizations that are pro–equal pay, including some unions, support the idea that the government should set wages for all jobs. To the contrary, the organizations that are proponents of equal pay are not for job wages being set by the government. They wish to have the discrimination taken out of pay scales from within the company. Commonly, this pay gap is attributed to the fact that women in the United States are still expected to attend to familial obligations over work. Data shows that women do attend to family obligations, like having a child, caring for a sick family member, or caring for an elder; but they also do not give up on work. Yes, women often chose lower paying jobs in exchange for flexible hours and do spend a lower number of hours per week long–term at their jobs than their male counterparts. Because women are socialized to be the primary care givers they are kept at these lower paying jobs that are more flexible, the jobs allow them to care for their family yet still retain an income (possibly a second income for the household). Women's changing roles in society has resulted in this workplace problem. Women are allowed and often encouraged to work but they are not rewarded or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. The Last Protected Class Discriminated Against Within The... The last protected class discriminated against within the hospitality industry that will be examined is religion. Everyone has their own beliefs, and practices their own faith, but at times these practices can interfere with one's job opportunities and livelihood. In the case, Christian Emergency Services Supervisory Officer Denied Religious Accommodation and Subjected to Harassment at Keystone Resort, the victim, Lisa Marie Cornwell, an emergency services supervisor at the Keystone Resort, was subjected to harassment for not only her Christian religion but for her gender as well. She was denied religious accommodation and treated less favorably than her male counterparts. The EEOC said that Cornwell's supervisor, Rick Garcia, banned her and another Christian employee from discussing their Christian beliefs and would not allow them to listen to Christian music while on duty. Moreover, according to the EEOC, Garcia ridiculed Cornwell for asking for scheduling accommodation so that she could attend her desired religious services, and denied her requests while scheduling lower ranking officers for the shifts she requested. On top of that, Cornwall was also sexually harassed, so she went through a lot. According to the EEOC, Cornwell could have been scheduled so that she could attend her religious services, without any cost or disruption to Vail's business operations, and the company was required by law to make an accommodation. • 26. Women 's Voices Feminist Visions Will Rogers the famous Vaudeville performer once stated, "We will never have true civilization until we have learned to recognize the rights of others". Rogers' statement is a very intelligent one; equal rights for all people is the next big step for humanity. Susan Shaw states in her book Women's Voices Feminist Visions, "Feminism, of course, affirms and works to maintain difference; it merely asks that these differences be valued equally". Feminism seeks to create equality amongst men and women, this means all women regardless of race, ethnicity, class, or sexuality deserve equal rights. Therefore, LGBT, race, ethnicity, transgender, and reproductive rights are issues of concern to women's rights activists. Despite the post–feminist myth that equality has been reached, there are still multiple contemporary issues which deserve feminist attention. Violence against women, economic inequality, and social construction of gender, the body, and sexuality are all issues present in modern society which are of concern to women's rights activists. Although it takes time, progress is being made toward total equality thanks to education and activist groups which raise awareness about inequality in the United States as well as around the world. Feminism is an ideology which aims to create a world without inequality, specifically gender inequality. Therefore, absolute equality is the central issue for contemporary feminist advocates. Gender violence is a major issue present in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. Reflection Of A Critical Thinking Portfolio Reflection Critical Thinking Portfolio Introduction This reflection will be an attempt to describe and consider more consciously the topic that I chose to investigate. I will explain in details the information that I have gathered in the portfolio. I chose to look at gender and why women are still held back in society. Gender inequality is defined as unequal treatment of individuals based on their gender. I will briefly discuss issues of unequal pay and sexual violence against women in the UK. Time immemorial it has been women that have been on the receiving end of this imbalanced economy, political and social system. I am therefore going to look into the causes and how these imbalances have affected the woman folk. This is despite being a greater majority of the world population. According to the information, I collected it seems that it will take years and years for things to change. Being a woman, this work has been an eye opener to facts about how we are regarded by men and has taught me lessons on what to do in order to succeed in a male–dominated world. The sources and information about gender inequality are readily available as this is a topic that has been on peoples' minds for centuries, therefore, a lot of research has been done to ascertain just why women don't seem to thrive in a male–dominated industry and what is being done to change perceptions of men. I believe it is true that the 21st Century has brought many changes as far as gender equality is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Students who are English language learners have been discriminated against and have had more challenges than any of the normal students in all school district around the United States. Teachers were not given the necessary tools and provided the necessary training to teach them. Teachers and Students encounter ESOL related problems almost daily. • 38. Indian Children Discriminated Against And Denied A Basic... Indian Children Discriminated Against and Denied a Basic Education Every year in India, millions of children are being discriminated and even denied an education, occurring in four of their major states ("HRW"). Although, four years ago, India established a law preventing this from occurring, allowing a person in India from ages 6 to 14 a basic education; but at the same time schools are not upholding these laws ("India Needs"). This could be due to the fact that India is a third world, developing country, who do not have education on the top of their priority list, trying to solve/ improve the massive poverty rate. We as a common group of people need to stop this from occurring in India in order to uphold the common good. One of the possible solutions discussed in one of the articles I read, suggested that India create a system in which they monitor every child of every grade throughout the time they enroll to the time they complete middle school (grade eight)("HRW"). Another solution that came up, seeming to be very obvious is the proper training of the teachers. This would allow the children at a better education through the validity of their teaching. Although these projects seem difficult, at the same time it would be a worthy one as well ("International Dalit"), demonstrating our concern to those less fortunate who are in need of support. A current violation of this basic human right, of denying children of an education, and in some circumstances ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Ottawa Federal government discriminated against the first nations elsewhere people from the government opposed their decisions. In the following paragraphs I would be discussing about the different stakeholders and their opinions on discrimination of the First Nations. In 2013 Ottawa federal government had discriminated child welfare services for the Natives. The federal government took multiple attempts to get the case thrown out. The federal government discriminated because the support that feds provide for child welfare on reserves is much lower than what kids off reserve get from provincial government although the need is greater. The government discriminated for the reason of money. They had a low budget. Blackstock said the government is stalling and the lack of movement is putting the First Nations children at risk. ... Similarly, Alice Springs communities and other remote communities in the Northern Territory are also susceptible to domestic violence. The causes of domestic violence amongst Indigenous Australians is not attributable to Aboriginal culture. Instead, the patterns of current domestic violence originate from the violent dispossession of the land between the Europeans settlers and Indigenous Australians. Non Aboriginal Women One native woman from the Native Women's Association of Canada expresses "it is an exception rather than the rule to know of an Aboriginal woman who has not experienced some form of family violence throughout her life" (Canadian Council on Social Development and Native Women's Association of Canada 1991, p. 25). According to the General Social Survey (2009) conducted in the ten provinces, Aboriginal women were nearly three times more likely to be a victim of a violent crime than non–Aboriginal women, this was true regardless of whether the violence was perpetrated by a stranger or by a spouse (Brennan, 2011). The impacts of structural and/or institutional racism have been experienced across generations by Aboriginals and have resulted in the collective wounds which are not easily healed. Aboriginals who experienced social exclusion as a form of racial discrimination are far more involved in substance use and alcoholism. In addition, there is a strong association between racism and self esteem (Reading & Wien, 2013). Similarly, the historical and contemporary trauma resulted from loss of land; marginalization, incarceration, residential schools, abuse and violence, and lack of governance affect the overall mental health of aboriginal communities in Canada (Haskell & Randall, 2009; Gee, & Ford, 2011). These points have merit. However, as stated previously, family violence, replicates the anguish and pain of all family members, including the perpetrator. The impacts of this violence on victims, often leads to higher risk of developing mental health problems, psychological problems and low self esteem (Andersson & Nahwegahbow, 2010). Similarly, the Aboriginal women are more vulnerable to family violence for a number of reasons including racism, marginalization and poverty (Amnesty International, 2014). Antigone‚Äôs Purpose Brooks Fridey Antigone's Purpose In the story of Antigone, originally written by Sophocles, explains the story, of a woman who stands up for her own beliefs against the king. At the time of Sophocles, women had little power and authority. They were expected to listen to their husband, king, or any man that speaks to or asks a woman of something. The story starts up where the story of Oedipus ends, in his death. Trouble and war are about to begin in Thebes, so Antigone travels there to try and stop what may become of her family and country. From my observations, this story can be analyzed in multiple ways, whether it is about the struggles of women, defying the higher power, or responding to the will of the gods. It is said ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To Antigone, it is not necessary that someone should obey their leader at all times. She believes what Creon declared to happen to her brothers was unfair and that the gods were telling her she needed to bury her brother. Antigone was unapproved to the treatment of women in these times, and that the king must be obeyed in all causes. She believed the gods were the true powers, and bad things would come upon you if you did not cooperate with their requests. When Haemon comes into the story, acknowledged as Antigone's fiancée, who is the son of Creon, makes it clear why Antigone was even still alive. Although Creon was cruel and often harsh, there was still something or someone holding him back from simply killing her. Haemon told his father it would be wrong to kill Antigone and would bring great mourning to the people of Thebes following her death. He wants Creon to be open to others views, but Creon responds by calling Haemon a woman's slave for backing up a woman and not his own father. A blind prophet advises Creon that he should properly bury Polyneices and release Antigone. He says if he does not he will greatly anger the gods, and might create his own misfortune for his disobedience. Possibly leading to his own death. As Creon ponders his possibilities and future, he finally decides to release Antigone and bury Polyneices. As he thought he was then making the right decision, he would soon find out what his ... • 62. Violence Against Women Is An Old Fashioned Practice Throughout the years, violence against women has become a national issue, often referred to as a "hidden epidemic" by Amnesty International, which spreads through social, cultural and ethnic areas. The cost of sexual and domestic violence creates a ripple effect throughout today's society; for example, discrimination of race, ethnicity, and age prevents women from obtaining any form of justice. Violence against women is an old–fashioned practice, but in the last decade it finally received recognition as a serious human rights issue. Violence against women is categorized into two parts: social violence, which occurs in public places between strangers, and domestic violence, which takes place within households and usually between family members. A prevalent and particular problem area includes psychological issues; women become depressed, isolate themselves, develop sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), commit suicide, depend on drugs and alcohol, develop poor reproductive health, and become incapable of supporting their families. Men and children are at risk of becoming perpetrators due to exposure of violence within households, low education, and childhood abuse. Education plays an important role in today's society about spreading awareness of violence against women. The World Health Organization, the Avon Foundation for Women, and Amnesty International, and the producers/authors of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide are some of many ... In India where domestic violence persists in want of dowry females also play their role in victimizing women. Husband is not the only accused in bride burning cases participation of females like mother–in–law and sister–in–law are also included. Another great cause of domestic violence in India is want of male child. Researches indicate that 30%of the abuse starts during pregnancy; during which a woman needs special care and attention; they are deprived of basic amenities like medicines and healthy diet even during pregnancy. Josey Aimes leaves her abusive husband with her two children and decides to move in with her parents. Josey started with a job shampooing in a nearby hair salon, but it was not enough to support her family. Therefore, she decided to take a job at the coal mine where her father works also. Her first few days working in the mine seemed to be okay, but she then realized the women were targets of discrimination and sexual harassment. One day at the mine, Josey was attacked by one of the male employees and she then called its quits with mining. For this reason, Josey decided to take legal action, by suing the mining company for discrimination and sexual harassment. At first, Josey was alone when trying to win the case against the company. Many of the other women preferred not to testify because they were afraid they would lose their source of income or get treated even worst once they returned to the mine. Josey was very brave for standing up for what was right, she then inspired the other women to speak up by telling her story. Eventually Josey was able to win her case against the Pearson mining company with the help of the other women testimonies. Sexual harassment was a major problem for the women working in the mine. The men would write horrible slurs about the women in their locker room. Josey would always turn to her boss about the constant sexual aggression towards her. But her boss did not ... It is rare for a woman to reach the highest level of employment such as CEO or a boss as the man is usually the one society sees should be the leader not the woman. Even though we live in the 21st century, gender inequality issue is still a major problem towards women nowadays. This is due to the fact that women are often underrepresented in the society with the dominance of males overemphasized. Although inequality in women still exists especially in workplace, but things are changing now. Women are currently more improved in their leadership roles. As a result, they are undoubtedly suitable for running higher and more qualified positions. As I grew out of that young and venerable age, I slowly started to realize that even in first world countries, women were being oppressed. They weren't seen as equals, simply because of their gender, not because of experience or knowledge, just because they are women. If it took me that long to find out how sexist, a developed country is how long will it take everyone. There has been a long tradition of interpretation, in all occupations. Interpretation of arts and literature has gone to an extent that it has taken shape of a discipline and has grown as a methodology and an art itself. Eliot even says, "We might remind ourselves that criticism is as inevitable as breathing". Method of Interpretation has long been a subject of discussion among intellectual circles and it has been subject to a constant evolution ever since it came into being. I will particularly be looking at violence against women in Fiji and how this type of violence affects the economy and therefore society on the whole. Gender based violence is a direct result of gender inequality. GBV puts health, security, autonomy and dignity at high risk. (Secretariat of the Pacific Community, 2009) It pertains to a huge variety of human rights violations which include, rape, sexual assault, harassment, domestic violence, sexual abuse of children and traditional practices that inevitably lead to harm. Though it is the least recognised human rights abuse globally, violence against women is relevant worldwide regardless of socio–economic status, religion or race. In fact, one in three women will be beaten or otherwise abused at some point in their life according to UN reports. (United Nations Department of public information, 2008) Domestic violence perpetuates gender inequality, limits economic potential and hinders the overall health and well–being of our population. Studies are indicative of the effect of gender based violence, not only because it is a direct violation of human rights [R] but also pertains to the grave impacts on the economy through legal, health and household costs caused. One of the main reasons immigrants move to the United States or any nation for that matter is for religious freedom and independence. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, readers follow the lives and narratives of two different women and their struggle to survive their brutal society. Through the book, the subject of religion and its impact on the two women is broached and further explored. In Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns, religion serves as justification of several aspects of the Afghan society; religion is used to justify violence, patriarchy, and discrimination against women and other minority groups. Religion is used by men and women alike to account for the validity of domestic violence towards women and violence in general. In most societies, men feel the need to reinforce the idea of their superiority upon women, so thus they use religion to prove their dominance. A Talib told Mariam of how 'God made us differently'(Hosseini 324). These "differences" that the Talib speaks of is one of main ways patriarchy is defended, since God made man and woman differently, the Afghan community assumes that they must be treated differently as well. Globally, women are facing struggles physically, socially and mentally because they are constantly being abused by men and significant others since it can be done by their female partner or even their parents/in–laws. In the past few years, the issue of domestic violence has gained the attention for research; studies have shown that it is a global issue that impacts negatively on the social and health status of individuals, women in particular. This assignment is completed in regards to the informing about the consequences of mental health patients being stigmatized and discriminated against. Based on the article, chapter one talked about how stigma is a mark of disgrace that is associated with a particular circumstance, quality, or person. With it being so powerful, stigma against the mentally ill has been codified into federal law for 50 years; and with that, only a few mental health systems even realize it. Embedded in Medicaid and Medicare laws, this system's discrimination has accelerated the psychiatric state of the emptying of hospitals, leaving a majority of patients sick and the most defenseless patients with not anywhere to turn. This is an issue that needs to be addressed. With the help of USA TODAY, advocates and experts spoke up and were describing a system in shambles, and had been neglecting millions of starved funding people each year across the country. Patrick Kennedy, a former congressman from Rhode Island who has fought to provide for better care for the mentally ill, had organized a report. The National Party, which was an all–white government, gained power and created hell for non–white citizens, their goal was to have white people continue to dominate the country and to keep each race separated from each other; even though at the time whites were only 20% of the population. The apartheid, which literally means "apartness" lasted until 1991, and during this time many acts were passed. One being that "non–white Africans were forced to live in separate areas from whites, and use public facilities separately. Contact between groups was limited." (History.com) As for woman specifically, since they are "regarded as dependents and are inferior to men..." (anc.org) they were even further discriminated against during the apartheid. In rural areas, specifically, a woman's workload increased dramatically as they tried to produce enough food off the land to feed their families. Many men were absent from their rural homes due to being a migrant laborer, which were poorly paid. The combined workload of caring for a family, the land, and themselves all alone, is the direct result of apartheid laws. When the apartheid ended, the hardships still effected everyone's lives, and not in a good way. In our first American history class, we learn about the battles we won, disasters we dodged, and equality we achieved. We learn about religious freedom, how slaves were freed, and how women gained the right to vote in 1920. Focussing on the victories allows us to disregard the inequality that is ever present in our society today. We turn a blind eye to the blatant discrimination, and many accept it and believe America is completely equal. While America has improved tenfold over the many years due to protests and reformation, our country still has a very long way to go. This statistic alone shows that women are viewed as less important and unworthy of the same financial stability that a man is entitled to. This is an important issue because women are the breadwinners for more than 50% of American households. (The White House) Families and children depend on women to get a substantial income, and without receiving as high of a salary as a man, the households who rely on women are at a disadvantage. Simple school supplies, medical expenses, and college tuition are all harder to obtain and pay for for those families who rely on women to provide the bulk or all of the income. It takes mothers an extra six months to acquire the same amount of money that fathers earn in one year, which sets them back and makes it harder for women to live a life equal to that of a man. (The White House) While the Equal Pay Act was put into place in 1963, the pay gap definitely still exists. This shows that even though there are restrictions on unequal pay, somehow businesses and corporations are getting around it and allowing men to make more money than women. Some may say that there are obvious solutions to this pay gap. They say that women should receive a higher education to allow them to get higher paying jobs, or apply to executive positions in order to close the pay gap. After taking this class, there are may concepts change in my mind, and these changes lead me to view men and women differently, including some different views on myself. Honestly, I have never thought that I am a androgynous person before, and it is still hard to admit for me. In my opinion, I think as a men, I must be tough and masculine; nevertheless, not physically but psychologically, I show some women's characteristics as well. When I gradually understand more about women, I think being a androgynous person is not a bad thing. Although there are several criticisms about androgyny have been raised, gender–role nonconformity still brings some positive thoughts. Just like the textbook says, "It permits freedom form gender–role stereotypes and allows people to express their opposite– gender tendencies" (80). Undoubtedly, I view both men and women differently after I taking this class. Emotionally, I know that women are more likely to express both positive and negative emotions, but men are supposed to express only anger, contempt, and pride. (Prieto–Carron, Thomson, and Macdonald, p.25) Throughout the history of the world, patriarchy has been rooted into the very essence of our lives, shaping our thoughts and actions. Patriarchy is present in virtually every society and unfortunately is the underlying problem to most violence in the world, particularly violence towards women. Patriarchy exemplifies the misogyny that has been ever–present since probably the beginning of every society. Whether it is discrimination towards women, lack of equal rights, or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Violence takes many forms: it can be physical, psychological, sexual, economic, and even within families, or combinations of one or more of these. In most cases, the violence has been "acceptable" because of the cultural traditions that are largely respected. However, with the increasing emergence of the women's movement internationally and even within Mexico itself, many Mexican males regard their roles as belittled. There has been a subtle and sometimes obvious backlash against the women's movement, especially if women have independent living or income possibilities. In a culture in which violence is the norm, beatings, rape, torture, mutilation, and even murder are frequently overlooked. This has been painfully evident in the cases of mass murders of young women in Ciudad Juarez. On January 1, 1994, the nations of the United States, Canada, and Mexico entered into a three–way partnership to supposedly lift trade barriers and improve production in all three countries. This is called the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). However, the effect was generally ruinous for southern Mexico. Trans–national corporations from Europe, Asia, and especially North America invested heavily in closing down factories inside their nations (primarily for environmental and labor costs) and establishing new ones, almost all of which ... • 134. Domestic Violence Against Women During The United States Domestic Violence Against Women in the United States Taking a look into America's work industry, society's values reflect the meaning of domestic violence. In order to gain an understanding of how societies function, many professionals have observed various factors that contribute to the way societies work and the specific explanations of social problems, such as domestic violence. Domestic violence and emotional abuse are behaviors used by one person to control the other. Victims can be of any age, sex, race, culture, and religion. Although both men and women can be abused, most victims are women. Domestic violence against women has become a social issue discussed by many Americans and it has become unacceptable, this paper will focus on the causes, effects, and solutions to domestic violence against women in the United States, and provide examples of how it has been changing through the years of 1995 to present. Violence against women is a substantial public health problem in the United States. According to data from the criminal justice system, hospital, and medical records, mental health records, social services, and surveys, thousands of women are injured or killed each year as a result of violence, many by someone they are involved with or were involved with intimately. Nearly one–third of female homicide victims are killed by an intimate partner (Federal Bureau of Investigation 2001). Throughout this, many will read about intimate partner violence also called ... • 138. Betrayal In Hero Of War I have read four texts about soldiers being betrayed or sold a fake reality. Those texts are Hero of War by Rise Against, Dulce Et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen, Rambo by Ted Ketoheff and War Pigs by Black sabboth. In the film Rambo. The main character was betrayed by his country, Once he got back from war for serving his country he was treated like scum. An example of this is when he was getting sprayed with the fire hose, spat on and abused by citizens of the country he had served for. My evidence for this is at the end of the movie when Rambo says to the army general "protesting me, spitting, calling me baby killer and all kinds of vile crap". The director put that in the film to show that even if you served for your country you can come ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both the characters were betrayed and sold a fake reality by their generals and recruiters. An example of this in Hero of War is when it says "He said son, have you seen the world? Well what would you say if I said you could? Just carry this gun you'll even get paid". In War Pigs it says " death and hatred to mankind, poisoning their brainwashed minds". In both those examples the song tells you how they are sold a fake reality and betrayed. My evidence for this is when he says "we took him away, a bag over his face from his family and his friends, they took of his clothes, they pissed in his hands, I told them to stop, but then I joined in". This is showing how when he went to war he was told it will be fun but when reality hit him and he realised he was breaking up family's. And what the recruiters said to him was a lie. Same as War Pigs when it says "Evil minds that plot destruction, sorcerer of death's construction, in the field bodies burning, as the war machine keeps turning". The same as the last piece of evidence he was brainwashed into think war was good but when they got there and saw everyone dying but that didn't stop the war. In the text. In the text War Pigs the author wants you to think about what the government tells everyday citizens fake information to get them into their army. In Hero of War the author wants you to think about how the army sells you a fake reality and tells you more false from true. It tells you all the behind the scenes information that only soldiers ... • 142. Women Are Being Discriminated Against The Workplace Abstract No matter how accomplished a woman is within her own right, whether it be her career level experience or educational background, in most instances she will never be considered equal to a man, in the workplace, some would think. The problem and or issue is clear, the discrimination against women in the workplace does exist. Women are being discriminated against in the workplace in regards to pay, promotions, and overall gender. The law does not feel that a woman should be discriminated against or overlooked for certain jobs based on their gender. In that regard, here are laws and protocols in place to protect women in the workplace from discrimination. Amazing stories from brave women who came forward, stood up, and challenged the companies in which treated them unfairly will be presented in this paper. This paper looks to show exactly how women are being discriminated against and why they are being discriminated against. These answers will be researched and presented in part from well–known magazines and peer–reviewed journals. Many times in life, inadvertently, we often times compare men and women. This is not something that we do to cause harm or malleus, just simple observations. "Aileen Rizo works as a math specialist at a California county office that supports dozens of school districts. After a few years on the job, she said she learned over lunch that a man just hired as a math consultant had started at a much higher salary. After trying ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 146. The Consequences Of Domestic Violence Abstract: Domestic violence is something that is overlooked in many aspects. While reading my paper you will learn about different types of domestic violence. How every type is different than the other. Each type hurts not only the victim, but everybody in the abuser and the victim's lives. Children are usually the witnesses in these situations and tend to be caught in the middle. You will learn how this affects them now and how it affects them later in life. There are also many reasons that someone turns to domestic violence, and all of those topics will be discussed. Finally, you will learn about the treatments available and all the ways to get help. After reading this paper I hope that you will be a little more informed on the consequences of domestic violence. "1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of [some form of] physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime" (Statistics). Domestic violence is one of the things that I think we as people don't take as serious as other things. Reading that statistic was painfully chilling, and the scariest part is how much of it goes unnoticed. My favorite part of the statistic was the part where it tells you how many men have been a victim of this kind of violence, because factually that is something that is always overlooked. Domestic violence isn't something that should be taken lightly and it definitely shouldn't be something that is brushed off your shoulders if it happens to you and/or if it's happened ... • 150. Dog Breeds That Are Discriminated Against Unfairly There are some dog breeds that are discriminated against unfairly. For example, Pit–Bulls and associated mixed breeds are known to have targets on their backs. This is thanks to vague and poorly founded Breed Specific Legislation or "BSL". I am against Breed Specific Legislation, in my opinion, it a product of the miseducation of the public at large. As well as, a misrepresentation of entire breeds by a few dogs who, due to circumstances beyond their control acted out in a violent way. These actions unfortunately, have often brought harm to a human or other living creature. When you turn on your television you may see a dog food commercial with a happy puppy with its head tilted to one side, you may also see a car commercial where the boy and the happy–go–lucky dog grow up together as dad drives the same car year after year. Rarely if ever is the dog in such a scenario of a Bully or Wolf–Hound breed. This is often attributed to the fact that these particular canine types look a certain way, exhibit certain behaviors, or maybe they just are not as "cuddly" as other dog breeds. For reasons as silly and illogical as this, many dogs, and specifically many Pit– Bulls are put to death, often without cause. As a kid in the early 90's, I recall that Rottweilers were the "dangerous breed" of the time. Pit–Bulls and other breeds, now find themselves under that same scrutiny. The fact is, that all dogs can be dangerous and are capable of harm. It will not be too long until the laws ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She thinks no one will believe her and she doesn't know who to tell." Well to start it off he said he recommended that she went to CPS immediately and if she didn't do that she needed to go to her mother. I started tearing up again and said her mother won't believe her and he came up and started to wrap me in a hug and I jumped back as far as I could. "That just proved my suspicions, it wasn't a friend now was it?" he asked me and I shook my head no and started sobbing. He slowly got up and locked the door, "I don't know what to do, they were finally happy" I sobbed over and over. "You have to tell ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I had tried everything to avoid being in the house I had laid on the trampoline, I had laid in my room, and I had laid in the bathtub. When at random my aunt came running into the house yelling for my mother. "CPS is looking for Anna. Heather someone reported sexual assault." and with that my life was flipped upside down. It was a long process of talking to a caseworker and long glares from my mother and eventually our car pulled into the driveway and as they speak of the devil and he shall appear. I was in a full on panic and everything was turned against me I told the cops one thing and mike and my mother would fire back with another. It was still my fault even when the social worker told me it wasn't, it somehow still became my fault. My aunt stuck by my side most of that day even when my mom told her to get away from me. My own mother didn't believe me when I needed her most she believed a man who had deceived her and manipulated her to many times. That night mike was told to stay away from the house until further notice and I felt as though I could finally breathe and before I knew it, it was gone again. My mom that night would not speak to me she would glare and shove me out of the way anytime she had something to tell me she would tell my brother to tell me. Before I knew it she ...
