The Tin Flute Analysis
Gabrielle Roy's novel the tin flute takes place in Saint–Henri neighbourhood of Montreal, Quebec during the Second War World. This novel examines
many themes, literary devices and important aspects seen through the perspective of the Lacasse family as they struggle through life in poverty. At the
beginning, it is seen that a 19–year–old girl, who works as a waitress at the Five and Ten restaurant named Florentine is the main focus, but the novel
revolves around Florentine's mother, Rose–Anna. Rose–Anna represents many themes throughout the story such as, personal loss, struggle and
solitude, which presents her as a round character. Firstly, Rose–Anna experiences loss when she loses three of her eleven children at a young age, she
lost her son Daniel who died from Leukemia, her son EugГЁne and her husband Azarius to the war and Florentine to marriage. Her loss is only a part
of her struggles, Rose–Anna and her family struggle through life because they live in poverty. Rose–Anna represents struggle because she must take
care of eleven children as well as another one coming on the way. While, Florentine and EugГЁne are forced to work for a living to earn money for
rent and food, instead of going to school. This demonstrates Rose–Anna as a round character because she always blamed Azarius for their poverty, but
by the end, she realized that "she always held [Azarius] responsible for their poverty, but now it seemed to her he had done his part" (Roy 372). The
last theme that

Double Standards of Men and Women in the Raise the Red...
Throughout time, women have often been regarded as the inferior gender. In China, women have had to go through dire circumstances in order to look
good in the public eye. From foot binding to becoming concubines in a prison–like house, women have been through hell in order to please their men.
There are a series of double standards and contradictions to how men and women are treated, and this is shown in both Lu Xun and Qiu Jun's essays
as well as in the film set in 1920s China, Raise the Red Lantern. Set the scene: it is China during the 1920s and women do not have a voice. Zoom in to
a woman walking into a house that looks like a gray prison–zone. This is her new home. She is the Master's fourth wife, and her name is Songlian. Raise

Lu Xun's essay, "My Views on Chastity", was written in 1918, and speaks on how the double standard for women truly existed. Lu Xun was an
author ahead of his time, for this is not how the men in old China were speaking. Lu Xun states, "In short, when a woman's husband dies she should
remain single or die. If she meets a ravisher she should also die. When such women are praised, it shows that society is morally sound and there is
still hope for China. That is the gist of the matter" (Lu 2). Just as how Lu Xun shows China's dependence on the chastity of women, Raise the Red
Lantern does as well.
The women are subjected to the ideas of how men believed the perfect woman should be: pure. The third wife shows how women in China were
supposed to be pure and devoted to only their husbands. After having an affair with the doctor, the third wife was to be hanged because of the family's
old customs and traditions. Even though the Master thought fondly of her (he often chose to stay the night with her), it was not enough to save her
from being exiled. This creates a double standard. Although the Master can sleep with a different wife every night, the second that it is known that the
third wife has strayed, she is immediately hanged for her disloyalty. This double standard this is placed on women is portrayed through the entire
movie. Songlian was an educated woman; there was a moment in the film when she wished to play her flute, and, upon finding it missing, she

Arthur Miller 's Death Of A Salesman And Tennessee...
"Drama is created by placing ordinary people in situations of crisis" explore some of the methods used to create drama in this way in at least two
of the plays you have studied The focus of a tragedy play is to emphasize the downfall of an individual from a social position of high standing. In
Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman and Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire, drama is created through the use of discussing the downfall
of an ordinary person. By placing ordinary people into crisis situations, it allows the audience to connect and relate to the situations presented. Drama
is created in both Miller and Williams' plays by the set and sound.
In both Miller and Williams' plays, the set is used to create drama. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The contrast between the inside and the outside of the Kowalski 's apartment intensifies, or creates drama, as it makes a divide between the internal
world of the apartment and the external world of the street, as well as portrays Blanche's struggle between living in reality and fantasy. Williams'
utilization of the flexible set allows the street to be seen at the same time as the inside of the apartment to suggest that the home is not impermeable to
the outside world, or reality, and thus the problems from the outside world enter the Kowalski's apartment, intensifying the drama. The most notable
example of the use of interior and exterior sets is in scene 10. In scene 10, Stanley rapes Blanche. However, right before it occurs, the back wall of the
apartment becomes transparent to reveal the situation happening on the street, that of a drunk person and a prostitute, a police whistling to them to
leave and a black woman coming upon the prostitute's purse and going through it. Each aspect of the external world seen after the apartment wall
becomes transparent foreshadows or relates to the events and happenings within the home. The drunk man illustrates Blanche and Stanley 's habit to
drink a lot, the prostitute symbolizes Blanche's association of sex and death, and the black woman going through the purse foreshadows the violation
that is going to occur in the apartment.
Although both Miller and Williams use the set as a means of

Okonkwo Of ' Okonkwo '
Okonkwo was known throughout the nine villages and even beyond. His fame rested on solid personal achievements. As a young man of eighteen
he had brought honour to his village by throwing Amalinze the Cat. Amalinze was the great wrestler who for seven years was unbeaten, from
Umuofia to Mbaino. He was called the Cat because his back would never touch the earth. It was this man that Okonkwo threw in a fight which the
old men agreed was one of the fiercest since the founder of their town engaged a spirit of the wild for seven days and seven nights. The drums beat
and the flutes sang and the spectators held their breath. Amalinze was a wily craftsman, but Okonkwo was as slippery as a fish in water. Every nerve
and every muscle stood out on their arms, on their backs and their thighs, and one almost heard them stretching to breaking point. In the end Okonkwo
threw the Cat. That was many years ago, twenty years or more, and during this time Okonkwo 's fame had grown like a bush–fire in the harmattan. He
was tall and huge, and his bushy eyebrows and wide nose gave him a very severe look. He breathed heavily, and it was said that, when he slept, his
wives and children in their houses could hear him breathe. When he walked, his heels hardly touched the ground and he seemed to walk on springs,
as if he was going to pounce on somebody. And he did pounce on people quite often. He had a slight stammer and whenever he was angry and could
not get his words out quickly enough, he would use

A Short Story : A Story?
"Bye, Mum!" I shouted, running out of the house so quickly that I had to pull on the rain gutter to round the corner of my house. "James Galway,
you put your shoes on," she reminded me like everyday, knowing I never would. "And be back by dark or you'll be carried away by a Pooka." "'Right,
Mum. Love you!" I yelled behind me. I didn't need to hear a response, I could see the smile on her face. I'd been waiting for this moment since
Riley and I hopped out of bed and descended for morning chores. We didn't mind helping Mum, it made us strong, but Riley loved to play football,
and me? I waited every moment of everyday to sit on a worn, paint–chipped, old step and play my flute. I got a new one for Christmas, because my old
toy one wore out from me playin' it so much. Man, I could play all day long, I could bathe in notes flying out of it, I could get drunk on the sound,
though Mum would throw a fit. She made us start eating supper before we went out to play because we'd never come back. My feet raced over the
pebbled cement, but rocks barely hurt when you're flying. My feet followed the familiar path until I was running down the street with my step on it.
I skid around when I ran past the step and plopped my bum down on the ground warmed by the sun. I put the familiar wooden reed, worn to the
shape of my mouth, to my lips and blew out a nasty sound. The flat notes reverberated off the houses down the road, but unclogged my head and
throat. I played ugly before I played

I loved dancin' almost as much as flute playing, so I combined them. I sometimes chose to play little lullabies that Mum sang around the house
when she couldn't stop smiling and the houses seemed to sigh with the sounds of calm, as if they'd come home from a long workday to relax. I
closed my eyes, in a peaceful state, and when I opened them again, a dirty little kitten had crept up in front of me. His familiar fur, black with
splotches of white spreading across his belly and face, and big eyes, that looked up at me. Sandy. Sandy was my buddy, I think he waited to hear
the music from my flute as much as I did each day. Although he was pickier than I with his music styles. He only sat and listened contently to my
lullabies. He would come by for a couple dancin' tunes and strut with me down the street, but he would stay until the first stars dimpled the dimming
sky. Sandy was my best friend, sometimes it felt like seeing myself in cat form, only, Sandy seemed lonely. It was his eyes that gave it away more
than anything else. They were wide and full of unanswered questions. His eyes looked like they could easily soak up puddles of love. I was anything but
lonely and I told Mum that a scruffy little kitten came to listen to my music every day and asked if I could bring him home. "You may bring him

Essay On Marching Band
Marching Our Way Into Our Future A variety of students have told me that they'd never be in marching band because it demands a lot of time and
dedication. Though I concede that band does require a lot of time, it still is not enough reason to not be in it. Every discourse community is
different when it comes to their goals, ideals, and diversity. They require different attributes in order to effectively join them, in other words to "fit
in" but certainly they all require commitment and time. Therefore, I encourage everyone to join band, some of your best memories will root from it
as well as long lasting friendships that can benefit you in the future. I am personally a part of the band community, especially the marching band side
and can prove it through the use of logos, ethos, and pathos. Some students may try to convince you to not join marching band for many excess
amounts of reasons. For example, the long hot days we battle, the short water breaks, extensive training, etc.Throughout this analysis you will come
into conclusion that in the end it is all worth it. Khalil Gibran once said "Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive
characters are seared with scars". In other words, it doesn 't matter how much you suffer, all that pain will make you someone stronger both personality
and physically wise when it comes to marching band. Don 't let others choose for you, and find through your own means whether you 'll benefit from
it. There has been

Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman Essay
Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman Arthur Miller's play, Death of a Salesman contains many themes of success and failure. They include the
apartment buildings, the rubber hose, Willy's brother Ben, the tape recorder, and the seeds for the garden. These symbols represent Willy's attempts
to be successful and his impending failure. In the start Willy and Linda moved to a home in Brooklyn, as it at the time seemed far removed form the
city. Willy was younger and stronger and he believed he had a future full of success.

Miller uses signs as something, which is help for the audience and can point them in the write direction. Death of a salesman is partly expressionistic,
meaning that the central ideas are conveyed through symbols, symbols which involve the peaceful suburbs versus the city are, the flute as Willy's father
was a musician and the playing of the flute reminds Willy of the peace that there was before the outline of the towering apartment buildings closed in
on his house. Other symbols include the stockings that Linda is mending while; unknown to her, Willy is giving new stockings to another woman
who he is having an affair with without Linda knowing and the teenage Biff accuses Willy of giving away Linda's stockings to the women. The hose
in Death of a Salesman directly relates to the theme of death, the hose is a line attached to the gas main in Willy's house, which allows him to breathe
the gas in to commit suicide. The hose also represents grief and deception. When Linda finds the hose she is afraid of its intended purpose. The tape
recorder could show the change in Willy's life through the advancement of technology, and signifies the point at which Willy's career ends. Howard,
who is much younger than Willy, finds more interest in the recorder than Willy himself and without any doubt fires Willy. But Willy can also be to

Alcibiades In Plato's Symposium Essay
The Tragedy of Alcibiades in Plato's Symposium
In Symposium, a selection from The Dialogues of Plato, Plato uses historical allusions to demonstrate Alcibiades' frustration with both social
expectations for the phallus and his inability to meet these expectations. Alcibiades' inability to have a productive sexual relationship effectively
castrates him and demonstrates the impotence caused by an overemphasis on eroticism. The tragedy of Alcibiades is that he realizes he is unable to
gain virtue through sexual relationships and will therefore be forced to remain mortal, yet he is unable to alter his condition.
Symposium is set during a festival for Dionysus, the goddess of fertility; this setting emphasizes the sexual expectations of ... Show more content on

Socrates attempts to justify homosexual relationships by quoting Diotima's differentiation between heterosexual relationships ("those who are pregnant
in terms of their bodies" and produce children) and homosexual relationships (those "who are pregnant in terms of the soul" and produce "prudence and
the rest of virtue" in their partner) (Plato 271).2 This ideal of productivity in homosexual relationships is realized by the lover passing knowledge and
wisdom on to his beloved. Thus, Socrates successfully justifies homosexual relationships; with this reasoning, he demonstrates to the other partygoers
that their homosexual relationships must be productive to be justified.
Despite Alcibiades' numerous male lovers (Crane),3 Plato portrays Alcibiades as unable to realize any productive sexual relationship (Crane Plutarch)4
because he fails to become the virtuous man that a productive relationship would have produced. Alcibiades admits that he occasionally succumbs "to
the honor [he gets] from many." Alcibiades is referring to the instances when, instead of spending time with Socrates, he "surrender[s] himself to the
flatterers who [tempt] him with many pleasures" (Crane Plutarch). Alcibiades is prevented from having a productive sexual relationship by his sexual
urges and overemphasis on physical eroticism. Alcibiades'

Loss Of Happiness In The Tin Flute, By Gabrielle Roy
When people have a chance at being happy they throw everything they have into that opportunity because they do not want it to pass by them and
live the rest of their life wondering what if. That is what Florentine was battling with in The Tin Flute. She does not know if she should follow Jean
and see the movie with him or let him pass her by. Florentine is almost afraid to say no because she wants this chance at happiness. In "The Tin Flute"
by Gabrielle Roy the reader should learn that people can throw everything they have into a chance at happiness because they are afraid of what may
happen if they let it pass.
Florentine is torn between whether or not to go with Jean LГ©vesque and leave her current life behind. While working at her job in a diner she is
approached by a man who wants to take her out and Florentine is not sure if she should follow him or let him leave. After taking a rest from her job
and thinking about her life and what she might become she decides that she "must immediately stake everything she has to offer, on one wild chance of
happiness." Florentine knows that what she is thinking about doing is crazy and that most people would not follow a man they knew almost nothing

The ' Guardians Of The Flutes '
Human sexuality can be interpreted in many different ideas and understandings. Watching the documentary "Guardians of the Flutes," I was able to see
a different life style than I'm use to but at the same time see many similarities. Both men and women have different roles in their daily lives and their
works do not intersect. The Sambia tribe is patriarchal, in which the men have the control or rule, similar to most American house hold; however, that is
changing. Understanding the way sex influences or impacts our lives is very important. Not only do humans interact sexually but also many animals.
Human sexuality is being able to be comfortable with one to be able to interact with others in a deeper level. The Sambia tribe treats sex as something
dirty and unpleasable but rather than a way to show their masculinity. Also, they go very far into the forest to be able to engage in sexual activity. In
my option the Sambia lack sexual literacy. According to Herdt, In order to become sexual literate, "...you can develop healthy and positive attitudes in
your thinking, communication, and lifestyle that will result that in satisfying sexual relationships when you decide you're ready for sexual intimacy."
The men was more open to sexual activities and engaged at a very young age but for a women they had to wait until marriage. However, they would
only engage in oral sex until they started to menstruate. Herdt mentions, "[Important sexual literacy is] being able to emotionally

How Did Ancient Peoples Make Music?
How did ancient peoples make music? Music is the oldest language in the world and has been used since the dawn of time to give expression to
emotions, feelings, and ideas that could not be put into words. The oldest known musical instrument is the flute, which is at least 35,000 years old. The
flute has changed over the course of its long history, from century to century, society to society. Theflute's design, the sounds it produces, and its
purpose has evolved from ancient flutes, to medieval flutes, to the Baroque and Romantic flutes, and, finally, modern flutes. The ancient flute started
out as simple "hollowed out bones or sticks with an embouchure hole" ("Timeline of Flute History"), the embouchure hole being where the player
blows into the instrument. Evidence of the ancient transverse flute is found in artwork from Western Europe, the Middle East, and Asia ("Timeline of
Flute History"). European transverse flutes appear for the first time in Etruscan iconographs from the first to the fourth centuries B.C. ("Vienna
Symphonic Library"). Ancient flutes were also made from baked clay pipes or reeds ("Flute"). Bamboo flutes were used in East Asia, Sumer, and
Egypt. The ancient Sumerians and Egyptians were among the first to add 3–4 finger holes to their bamboo flutes ("Vienna Symphonic Library"). The
oldest playable musical instruments yet found are from the Henan Province in China and are roughly 9,000 years old. These flutes are made from the
hollow wing bones of the

This double standard that was placed on women is portrayed through the entire movie. For example, Songlian was an educated woman, and there was a
moment in the film when she wished to play her flute, but, upon finding it missing, she immediately began searching for it. As it turned out, the
Master had the flute burned because he had suspected that it was from a college boy. He used the flute to keep Songlian in her place because, at the
time, women were not supposed to know how to play flutes, a point proven when Songlian had confronted her maid and her maid simply stated,
"Flutes can only be played by men" (Raise the Red Lantern). However, at the end of the film, Songlian seems to come to the realization that she is
happier by herself than she is while fighting with the other wives to receive the Master's attention. Songlian had initially lost herself to the role of a
concubine, but it is shown that, through the harshness of her realization and of witnessing the hanging of the third wife, she went insane. She seemed to
have lost all will to live because she was stuck. She could not escape this life, and, instead of playing along, she simply gave up. In fact, Songlian lost
her role as a woman by the end. She was referred to as "the Hysteric" instead of a woman, a wife, or a concubine (Raise the Red Lantern). She was

The other section of the commentary report is the commentary of the scores which are collected in this book. The commentary is arranged in a really
standard form, and the comments on performance are quite helpful to the performers. For instance, the commentary of Sonanta in B–flat Major for Flute
and Basso Continu, Wq,125 is located from the page one hundred and thirty–six to page one hundred and thirty–seven. In the commentary, it mainly
shows the measure numbers, part of the voice, and remarks. For Measure number, it used the number to mark each specific measure. In the part of the
voice, fl means the voice of the flute, and b.c. means the voice of the basso continuo. In the section of remarks, it contains very detailed comments on
the performance. Even it points out the version that it follows.
As I have tried out all the comments on this piece, I found that the changes make music sound more interesting and artistic. For instance, the Sonata in
B–flat major for flute and Basso continuous second movement Allegro. In the third measure, it suggests the note 2 changed from F to A. After this
changing, the melody of flute sounds more interesting. In the measure six, it suggests moving the slur from notes 3–4 for notes 2–4. That lets the
melody skip a minor third and sounds more stable in the beginning section than the original one. In the measure twenty seven,

The Wasps Analysis
In this paper, I will discuss a play by Athenian playwright Aristophanes, The Wasps. First, I shall give a brief overview of the The Wasps. Then, I
will examine the courtroom scene of the play and argue that Philocleon is not an impartial juror. Next, I will discuss generational gap in Athens.
Finally, I will conclude the paper with my outcome of the investigation of the conflict between Misocleon and Philocleon. The Wasps is a comedy
that was performed in 422 BC, towards the end of the first Peloponnesian War, at an annual Athenian festival. The play discusses real features of
Athenian life, specifically political life. The Wasps opens with two slaves, Sosias and Xanthias, sleeping outside a house with a large net spread
over it. Their master, Bdelycleon, is asleep on a wall that overlooks the courtyard where Sosias and Xanthias sleep. They reveal that they are
guarding the father of their master, Philocleon, because he is addicted to the court of law. Philocleon attempts to escape, however Sosias, Xanthias,
and Misocleon keep him inside the netted area. Soon, the Chorus arrives to try to rescue Philocleon from imprisonment, however, Misocleon and
Philocleon agree to have a logical discussion. Philocleon explains how calm he feels when in the courthouse and how he enjoys the flattery and being
noticed by old and important men. He then discusses how after he is paid by the court, he feels powerful at home. When it is Misocleon's turn, he

The coaches blew their whistles, a loud, blaring noise compared to the quiet giggles of the seventh grade girls. The whistles had signified that the
game was over. Unfortunately, Keystone Oaks had won against the Canon McMillan girls' gold volleyball team, which meant that my game was
next. Our first away game! I was excited, but my joy was ephemeral once I realized how good the seventh grade Keystone Oaks team was. Of
course, I would not let that frighten me. I played as hard as I could, giving it my all, and I was not ready to let them win. As fate would have it, we
lost. But this event is a great example of how I am awkward, defensive, and somewhat stubborn. I, unlike most others, love competition, as I become
a lot stronger, phisically and emotionally, when faced with challengers. One could also say I am funny and mischievous, as I act like a 'class clown'
when with my friends. But what really outlines me as a person are my family, hobbies, and aspirations.
Obviously, my family makes me who I am and molds me into the woman I'll become. My dad's house is packed with me, my dad, my stepmom, my
pitbull lab mix, Cooper, and my two cats, KitKat and Fez. My dad, Jerry, is goofy and enjoys making others laugh. Yet, he can become stict and
serious when necessary. My stepmom, Jenny, is strong–hearted, stubborn, and kind. She enjoys laughing at my dad's silly jokes. My mom's house,
which I visit on weekends, is a lot less cramped, only housing her and my baby brother, Daniel. My

The Event I Went At The University Of Minnesota
The event I went to go see was a Guest Master Class instructed by Barthold Kujiken. This event was held on Sunday afternoon in Ferguson Hall at the
University of Minnesota. It was held in a small auditorium similar to a class setting. Barthold was accompanied by a student flutist and pianist. A lot of
time was spent with the flutist and pianist playing a part of a piece, and him teaching and demonstrating on how to improve a piece and explaining the
fundamentals of the music. It was a very informative event/class.
Barthold Kujiken was born March 8, 1949. He's a Belgian flutist and recorder player. He attended Bruges Conservatory and the Royal Conservatories
of Brussels and The Hague, where he studied the modern flute. He is best known for playing baroque music on authentic instruments such as the flute.
He played in baroque orchestras for many years, and then went off to playing chamber music concerts all over the world, where he extended to
playing 19th century music. The majority of the event he talked about Sonata's. As we discussed in class, a sonata is a solo instrument accompanied
by a keyboard. In this case the solo instrument was the flute and it was accompanied by a piano. The flutist played a major sonata. As she played
apiece he would stop her and tell her a few things to change to improve the piece, and she would play that piece once again with the revisions. One of
the other things he told her was to play the sonata without any ornaments just the skeleton.

Flute Monologue
Blowing a thin stream of air across the mouthpiece. Moving your fingers to match the notes and rhythms. Soaring up high and back down low in
harmony to the music, as the conductor counts the beats, and your fellow band members balance their notes to match yours. Where the sounds glide
over each other, bringing the song to life, punctuated by your high sixteenth notes, weaving in and out of the tune. This is the life of a flute player. The
ones that can play anything and everything, and are the light melody of the pieces that we play. Just like in Tiffany, Age 11, flute is one of the things
that I really like and that partly makes up who I am. Music is important to me, and our instrument seems made for spring with the flowing beauty of it's

I used to be first chair. In beginner band, my knowledge the notes on the staff that came from playing piano made me the top of the class. I could
play anything our teacher, Mrs. Finnigan threw at us, and if I was anything other than the absolute best, I got very disappointed. When we had
play tests, and songs to learn, I thought that I didn't need to practice. I knew the notes, and all of the melodies were easy. Once, I didn't want to
work on a play test that we were given, and I thought that I was good enough to not care. I ended up dropping to third chair, and even though I got
a pretty good grade, it really got me upset. I was so used to being the best, and now it had gotten taken away from me! I definitely practiced more
after that and wasn't as cocky. My private lesson teacher noticed that I was doing well, and gave me more music to practice. It gave me something
else to keep me engaged. Being able to play harder and harder songs, and create more beautiful music than just the simple tunes we learned in class
really boosted my confidence. It showed me how much I really could do, and how much more I could do if I kept trying and working on my skills.

My Experience At A Music Concert
In September, I attended the concert Windfire: Flute and Percussion Spectacular at Rammelkamp Chapel. Paula & John Kasica performed on the flute
and percussion with Nancy Shaaf accompanying on the piano. This was my first time attending a live classical music concert. I didn't know what to
expect. My limited experiences with classical music were listening while I studied or using it to fall asleep at night. Honestly, I worried that I might
fall asleep during the concert. As it turns out, I had no reason to fret. I brought my two nieces (Mackenzie and Naylani) and my daughter (Talia)
along with me to the concert. My girls asked me what to expect and I had no answers for them. The flutist introduced herself and asked if we
played any instruments. We each told her our instrument of choice that we someday hoped to learn. Eagerly, we awaited the start of the program.
"Sweet Simplicity" was the first piece played. Instantly, we were spellbound. My eyes went immediately to the pianist's fingers as they danced on
the ivory keys with such passion and vigor. It was the flutist that drew my nieces' eyes, as they watched the purse of her lips and the way she
controlled her breathing. John Kasica's percussion playing is what hooked my daughter. She watched as he rhythmically tapped on the drums, his body
moving in harmony with each beat. We were literally dancing in our seats to the vibrant beat coming from the stage. Smiles spread across our faces as

Bassoon Research Paper
Although the exact origin of the bassoon is unknown (JSTOR 7–14), we do know that the earliest versions of the bassoon appeared in Italy, around the
15th century. The earliest form of the bassoon was a wooden instrument, folded in half (to reduce the vertical size of the instrument). There were many
bassoon–like instruments in the late 14th/early 15th century (JSTOR 48). One example could be the low–register shawm. This instrument was a larger
version of a late 14th century oboe. Even though the low–register shawm was folded, it was still more like an oboe than it was a bassoon. However, the
dulcian had the most bassoon–like qualities. It was a one piece instrument, with a folded bore and a metal bocal. Like the bassoon, the dulcian had six...

For example, composers wanted bassoonists to act more like higher woodwind players, and be able to play higher, faster, and louder than ever before.
So, as in the classical era, instrument makers had to comply with the composer's needs. During this time, instrument makers did not "re–invent" the
bassoon, but instead they improved it by changing where keys go, and added more keys to make playing easier for the player (JSTOR 114–117). The
metals that the keys were made out of and the quality of the keys on the bassoon were better than the dulcian, baroque, and classical bassoons. Some
of the key work on the bassoons from the romantic era still remain almost unaltered to this day (JSTOR

Whistle: The physiology of the whistle register is the most poorly understood of the vocal registers. It is known that when producing pitches in this
register vibration occurs only in some anterior portion of the vocal folds. This shorter vibrating length naturally allows for easier production of high
pitches. The physiological process that causes this is not currently known.
Though the whistle register is most commonly used to produce pitches above E6, it can be used to produce lower pitches. By the physiological
definition just detailed, it is a configuration of the vocal folds and not a range of pitches. There is, however, no universally agreed upon scheme for
classifying vocal registers, so it is common to see other definitions. See the article on vocal registration for a discussion.
[edit]
In the European classical music, the whistle register is only rarely called for. When it is, it is exclusively used by coloratura sopranos to produce
pitches above C6. Probably the most well–known example of the whistle register in European classical music is the aria "Der HГ¶lle Rache kocht in
meinem Herzen" from the opera Die Zauberflöte; it calls for several pitches above C6, up to F6.
In the popular music of the West, the whistle register is used more often than in its classical music. It is used with more variety and to produce much

J.S. Bach Flute Sonata in B minor (BWV 1030): the development of the Baroque Flute, the flautists and the music Johann Sebastian Bach (J.S. Bach)
is no doubt one of the greatest composers of all times. He composed many works for flute including works for solo flute, flute with harpsichord and/or
continuo and, two flutes and harpsichord. However, there has been a controversy, over theflute works, whether they were composed solely by the
composer, assisted by someone or under the guidance of J.S. Bach. In addition, some scholars doubted that some of works are not written for flute and
they are actually transcribed for flute by the composer. Especially, the Sonata in B minor (BWV 1030) raises most number of controversies.

There are, generally speaking, eight different kinds of flutes including concert flute, descant flute and flute d'amour. Different kinds of flutes appeared
in different pitches.5 In the music that Bach wrote for flute, he did not, like all the composers at that period of time, specify the type of flute they
writing for. In addition, there is a possibility that different flutes were used in different performances. All flutes were written as if they were in the key
of D especially in the first quarter of the 18th century. As a result, it is difficult to judge which flute the composer had in mind from the music.6 In the
journal "J. S. Bach's Compositions for Solo Flute: A Reconsideration of Their Authenticity and Chronology" by Robert L. Marshall, he suggests:
"It is still widely believed that Bach wrote eight works for the solo flute. But the view that has prevailed among Bach specialists for the past fifteen
years is that the rather similar Sonatas for flute and harpsichord obbligato in G Minor (BWV I020) and E Flat Major (BWV io31) were probably
composed by someone else–most likely Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach––and that the Sonata in C Major for flute and continuo (BWV 1033) was written
by one–or two–of Bach's students (one of them, again, might have been Emanuel Bach), presumably in part under the composer's active supervision
and intervention." 7
This suggestion probably comes from the lack of normal musical style in his writing. Moreover, his writing shows no

Personal Narrative – Rough Draft
The lake glistened before me as my mom and I pulled into Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp just outside Twin Lakes Michigan. I had been accepted into the
International Youth SymphonyOrchestra program where after spending a week at the camp the entire orchestra would be heading off on a six week
European Tour to share our musical talents and American culture with another part of the world. I knew traveling to a different continent would give
me further insight as to who I was a person, but did not imagine the people I would meet would impact me as much as they did.
His name was Alex Peabody, a 16 year old junior from Ann Arbor, Michigan. Although we weren't best friends, we were still close with one another
throughout the tour. He had messy brown hair that framed his round face and always wore a big flashy smile. One of my favorite moments with him
was while we were waiting to board the bus to go the the airport. While we sat waiting, I was practicing my flute in preparation for our first concert in
France. Many of the other students were practicing, talking, giggling, or sharing newly found favorite songs with their friends. The noise was
deafening and created a carnival of sound that grew louder with each passing minute. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Alex, a cello player, watching
me practice, his eyes bright with fascination.

Death Of A Salesman Imagery Analysis
Miller has develop imagery not only through phrases but off stage lines that have given the play a ominous feeling. Imagery is a reoccurring
inanimate object that proposes some type of influence on the play. The reader sees specific consistent noises and emotions that help create imagery
in Miller's lines. "Remember those two beautiful elm trees out there?" Willy says. Willy loved to see green. He loved to watch the gardens grow and
flourish, but specifically loved to remember the times when the roses bloomed. "Remember" Willy states, this subtle word gives the reader a

Such as the consistent use of seeds in the play. Willy is in constant fear throughout the play with trying to be a sufficient father. The reader watches
as Willy grows old how he is in inadequate father and, in certain situations, he is troubled by his failed fatherly role. Whenever Willy is in a
situation, such as after the boys abandon him at Frank's Chop House, he goes to the local store and buys seeds to plant. These seeds are a very
common reoccurring symbol that acts as a replacement for his children. Willy never stops trying to be the best father he can for his boys but
when Willy buys these seeds he feels like he is succeeding at making his children grow in life. He finds pleasure and satisfaction in making a
couple seeds grow to be a successful bunch of flowers. "On the way home tonight, I'd like to buy some seeds...." Willy says to Linda as she replies,
"Not enough sun gets back there. Nothing'll grow anymore." This quote shows us how a simple man just wants to buy some seeds and plant them but
is always hit by reality which tells him he can't. The statement "Nothing'll grow anymore" is a consistent reminder to Willy on how he has not only
failed to be a successful salesman but a good husband and

Hopelessly, we searched the forest for the man that was no longer there as the haunting melody played. Suddenly, the percussion began and we
envisioned our hero dashing in to save us. Our bodies swayed to the rhythm as we saw Ariadne and Dionysius triumphantly dancing. The "Suite
Antique" prelude brought us back from the forest and enthralled us with the playing of the instruments. Naylani began lifting her arms as though she
were playing the flute herself, mimicking the actions of the flutist and the movements of her body as she drew breaths to play. I watched as the pianist's
fingers moved eloquently. Soon, my fingers strummed upon my knee in my own attempts to replicate the piano playing. As the ostinato took over the
stage, our spirits lifted as the music became full of life. Before I knew it, Naylani was dancing like a woodland fairy and having such a good time.
Laughter spread as she began playing the flute again as she danced. The aria brought back the slow and soothing music from before and we watched
as the artists played. Our gazes were on the instruments of choice as we dreamed of ourselves playing the pieces we were hearing. Feelings of peace
and relaxation developed our bodies as we simply enjoyed the music.

Use Of The Flute In Death Of A Salesman By Arthur Miller
The use of the flute in the play, Death of a Salesman, by Arthur Miller enhances the work's meaning and heightens the literature's level of art.
Throughout the play, the flute makes numerous appearances, each time bringing much symbolism to the scene. The flute represents Willy, the
protagonist's, memories of his father. As the play begins, flute music plays symbolizing Willy's overwhelming life as well as his abandonment issues.
The flute appears again and portrays Willy's father's haunting him. In Act II, the flute resurfaces to portray the hardship Willy faces as a result of his
father's leaving him isolated. As the play comes to a close, the flute music plays for the last time to finish the ongoing theme of desertion that Willy
feels. The symbol of the flute in the play greatly enhances the plot and adds another dimension of art to the play.
In the opening of the play, flute music plays, symbolizing the overwhelming pressures Willy places on himself, furthering the content as well as the
artisanship of the play. The curtains open to a scene of Willy's house in Brooklyn. Miller writes the following,
A melody is heard, played upon a flute. It is small and fine, telling of grass and trees and the horizon. ...From the right, Willy Loman, the Salesman,
enters, carrying two large sample cases. The flute plays on. He hears but is not aware of it. He is past sixty years of age, dressed quietly. Even as he
crosses the stage to the doorway of the house, his exhaustion is apparent.

The Theme Of Deceived Love In Gabrielle Roy's The Tin Flute
French canadian author Gabrielle Roy dedicated her work to the illustration of the working class in its daily whereabouts. Her novels show a raw
reality combined with great sensibility. Her first book, The Tin Flute is set in Montreal, in St–Henri's neighbourhood where we follow the tribulations
of young waitress Florentine Lacasse. The story takes place during the Second World War. One of the main themes ofThe Tin Flute is love, deceived
love. Around this main theme revolve other motives such as family, dispossession, war, loneliness and many more. This love that was deceived is

Analysis Of Willy Loman
Great writers develop great character. In "Death of a Salesman", Arthur Miller takes the life of an elder man, Willy Loman, and reveals Willy's past
through his flashbacks to show a character downfall. Willy Loman strives to become a successful salesman and for people to like him very much, but
as Willy gets older the business world changes and Willy's once successful business life goes downhill. Through Willy, Miller portrays an unsuccessful
American dream. With the downfall of Willy Loman, along with the characterization of Willy Loman, the symbols, and theirony in "Death of a
Salesman"; Arthur Miller presents the American dream of Willy Loman, to become prosperous as a salesman through his kind heart, and also shows
how not all American dreams turn out successful.
Miller characterizes Willy Loman to further develop his character and the understanding of Willy's American dream to expand the plot. When
Charley offers Willy a job, Willy turns it down then tells Charley "After all the highways, and the trains, and the appointments, and the years, you
end up more dead than alive"(243). This characterizes Willy to show how he has given up his dream of a successful salesman. After Willy dies, Biff
realizes "there's more of him in that front stoop than in all the sales he ever made"(276). Biff realizes that Willy made the most success at home,
fixing the house and making it the best place for his family to live. When Willy turns down Ben's offer to move to Alaska, he tells Ben

Magic Flute Analysis
Die Zauberflöte, The Magic Flute is composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It is a singspiel in two acts. Its German libretto is written by Austrian
actor and theatrical producer Emanuel Schikaneder.
In early 1791, Mozart was deeply in debt as his music no longer appealed to the Viennese public. Thus Mozart was extremely keen when Emanuel
Schikaneder suggested that they work together on a new opera.
Schikaneder had arrived in Vienna in 1789. He managed the Theater–auf–der–Wieden, a theatre that specialized in popular German–language musical
entertainment, which were often comical with foreign or fantastic settings.
Soon after his arrival, Schikaneder had been extremely successful with the "magic opera" Oberon by composer Paul Wranitzky and librettist Carl
Ludwig Giesecke. Following this success, Schikaneder decided to write the libretto to The Magic Flute, with Mozart composing the music.
Schikaneder promised to give Mozart the rental fees for productions following the premiere. However, he later went back on his word and for years,
Mozart's widow fought for the money while The Magic Flute made profit all over Europe.
The Magic Flute began composition in May/June and most of it was completed by July. Mozart composed most of the music in a little hut on the
grounds of Theater–auf–der–Wieden. In mid–September, Mozart began the final preparations for the premiere of The Magic Flute, which included
composing the Overture, the part of his opera which he always wrote last. The full score of The Magic Flute was finished on September 28th and it
premiered at Theater–auf–der–Wieden on September 30, 1791. Mozart conducted the orchestra, while Schikaneder sang the role of Papageno.
Mozart wrote many vocal parts for specific singers he knew. One example is The Queen of the Night, whose arias require the singer to sing F6, which
is extremely demanding. For the less experienced singers, Mozart wrote and supported their parts with the orchestra.
On the opening night, although the performance was good, the audience did not respond enthusiastically as the unconventional and wide range of
music in the opera were breaking the norms and expectations of what an opera was. However, this sparked immense curiosity and drew in huge

The Magic Flute Analysis
The recitative tells the story and the aria responds emotionally to what just happened.
The recitative refers to song–speech. It is derived from the Italian verb meaning "to recite" and its purpose is to portray the quality of speech. The no.
4 recitative of The Magic Flute is where we are introduced to the Queen of the Night. The recitative is in the key of B–flat major and continues the
Allegro maestoso tempo marking of the entrance music. It starts with a syncopated accompaniment figure which is useful in creating a disturbed and
restless mood, making listeners wary of the Queen of the Night.
Mozart adopts secco accompagnato, an old style from the Baroque operas. However, Mozart did not entirely utilise the Baroque opera styles and
structures. Baroque arias were characteristically in the ternary form, which was a reason for their downfall as the music did not move with a strong
sense of direction– it always ends where it started, which stopped the progress. Mozart changed it in a number of ways. He used the orchestra as a
filling more complex than in earlier music, and a way for mood setting, which is a crucial difference compared to before. When the Queen of the night
starts to sing, dry chords are played in the orchestra to keep the singer in tune and also emphasise certain words. The secco accompaniment brings the
music to modulate to the relative G minor. This leads into the aria.
The aria is kind of in binary form, however it is not exactly binary as the two parts are not related. The first part starts in G minor in Larghetto and
shows us the introverted, worried and anxious side of the Queen as she remembers the horror of her daughter's kidnapping. The second part of the aria
is back to B–flat major and is in Allegro moderato. This part portrays her bossy and commanding personality as she orders Tamino to rescue her
daughter. This aria would be more appropriately classified as through–composed as the music follows the text.
The Queen of the Night attempts to create a firm image of herself, but the music betrays her. It shows her lack of control. The very rapid shifting
between emotions suggests that she is fickle and shows that her façade is extremely shallow.
In the recitative, Mozart uses a

The Tin Flute Analysis

  • 1. The Tin Flute Analysis Gabrielle Roy's novel the tin flute takes place in Saint–Henri neighbourhood of Montreal, Quebec during the Second War World. This novel examines many themes, literary devices and important aspects seen through the perspective of the Lacasse family as they struggle through life in poverty. At the beginning, it is seen that a 19–year–old girl, who works as a waitress at the Five and Ten restaurant named Florentine is the main focus, but the novel revolves around Florentine's mother, Rose–Anna. Rose–Anna represents many themes throughout the story such as, personal loss, struggle and solitude, which presents her as a round character. Firstly, Rose–Anna experiences loss when she loses three of her eleven children at a young age, she lost her son Daniel who died from Leukemia, her son EugГЁne and her husband Azarius to the war and Florentine to marriage. Her loss is only a part of her struggles, Rose–Anna and her family struggle through life because they live in poverty. Rose–Anna represents struggle because she must take care of eleven children as well as another one coming on the way. While, Florentine and EugГЁne are forced to work for a living to earn money for rent and food, instead of going to school. This demonstrates Rose–Anna as a round character because she always blamed Azarius for their poverty, but by the end, she realized that "she always held [Azarius] responsible for their poverty, but now it seemed to her he had done his part" (Roy 372). The last theme that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Double Standards of Men and Women in the Raise the Red... Throughout time, women have often been regarded as the inferior gender. In China, women have had to go through dire circumstances in order to look good in the public eye. From foot binding to becoming concubines in a prison–like house, women have been through hell in order to please their men. There are a series of double standards and contradictions to how men and women are treated, and this is shown in both Lu Xun and Qiu Jun's essays as well as in the film set in 1920s China, Raise the Red Lantern. Set the scene: it is China during the 1920s and women do not have a voice. Zoom in to a woman walking into a house that looks like a gray prison–zone. This is her new home. She is the Master's fourth wife, and her name is Songlian. Raise ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lu Xun's essay, "My Views on Chastity", was written in 1918, and speaks on how the double standard for women truly existed. Lu Xun was an author ahead of his time, for this is not how the men in old China were speaking. Lu Xun states, "In short, when a woman's husband dies she should remain single or die. If she meets a ravisher she should also die. When such women are praised, it shows that society is morally sound and there is still hope for China. That is the gist of the matter" (Lu 2). Just as how Lu Xun shows China's dependence on the chastity of women, Raise the Red Lantern does as well. The women are subjected to the ideas of how men believed the perfect woman should be: pure. The third wife shows how women in China were supposed to be pure and devoted to only their husbands. After having an affair with the doctor, the third wife was to be hanged because of the family's old customs and traditions. Even though the Master thought fondly of her (he often chose to stay the night with her), it was not enough to save her from being exiled. This creates a double standard. Although the Master can sleep with a different wife every night, the second that it is known that the third wife has strayed, she is immediately hanged for her disloyalty. This double standard this is placed on women is portrayed through the entire movie. Songlian was an educated woman; there was a moment in the film when she wished to play her flute, and, upon finding it missing, she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Arthur Miller 's Death Of A Salesman And Tennessee... "Drama is created by placing ordinary people in situations of crisis" explore some of the methods used to create drama in this way in at least two of the plays you have studied The focus of a tragedy play is to emphasize the downfall of an individual from a social position of high standing. In Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman and Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire, drama is created through the use of discussing the downfall of an ordinary person. By placing ordinary people into crisis situations, it allows the audience to connect and relate to the situations presented. Drama is created in both Miller and Williams' plays by the set and sound. The contrast between the inside and the outside of the Kowalski 's apartment intensifies, or creates drama, as it makes a divide between the internal world of the apartment and the external world of the street, as well as portrays Blanche's struggle between living in reality and fantasy. Williams' utilization of the flexible set allows the street to be seen at the same time as the inside of the apartment to suggest that the home is not impermeable to the outside world, or reality, and thus the problems from the outside world enter the Kowalski's apartment, intensifying the drama. The most notable example of the use of interior and exterior sets is in scene 10. In scene 10, Stanley rapes Blanche. However, right before it occurs, the back wall of the apartment becomes transparent to reveal the situation happening on the street, that of a drunk person and a prostitute, a police whistling to them to leave and a black woman coming upon the prostitute's purse and going through it. Each aspect of the external world seen after the apartment wall becomes transparent foreshadows or relates to the events and happenings within the home. The drunk man illustrates Blanche and Stanley 's habit to drink a lot, the prostitute symbolizes Blanche's association of sex and death, and the black woman going through the purse foreshadows the violation that is going to occur in the apartment. • 4. Okonkwo Of ' Okonkwo ' Okonkwo was known throughout the nine villages and even beyond. His fame rested on solid personal achievements. As a young man of eighteen he had brought honour to his village by throwing Amalinze the Cat. Amalinze was the great wrestler who for seven years was unbeaten, from Umuofia to Mbaino. He was called the Cat because his back would never touch the earth. It was this man that Okonkwo threw in a fight which the old men agreed was one of the fiercest since the founder of their town engaged a spirit of the wild for seven days and seven nights. The drums beat and the flutes sang and the spectators held their breath. Amalinze was a wily craftsman, but Okonkwo was as slippery as a fish in water. Every nerve and every muscle stood out on their arms, on their backs and their thighs, and one almost heard them stretching to breaking point. In the end Okonkwo threw the Cat. That was many years ago, twenty years or more, and during this time Okonkwo 's fame had grown like a bush–fire in the harmattan. He was tall and huge, and his bushy eyebrows and wide nose gave him a very severe look. He breathed heavily, and it was said that, when he slept, his wives and children in their houses could hear him breathe. When he walked, his heels hardly touched the ground and he seemed to walk on springs, as if he was going to pounce on somebody. And he did pounce on people quite often. My feet followed the familiar path until I was running down the street with my step on it. I skid around when I ran past the step and plopped my bum down on the ground warmed by the sun. • 7. Essay On Marching Band Marching Our Way Into Our Future A variety of students have told me that they'd never be in marching band because it demands a lot of time and dedication. Though I concede that band does require a lot of time, it still is not enough reason to not be in it. Every discourse community is different when it comes to their goals, ideals, and diversity. They require different attributes in order to effectively join them, in other words to "fit in" but certainly they all require commitment and time. Therefore, I encourage everyone to join band, some of your best memories will root from it as well as long lasting friendships that can benefit you in the future. I am personally a part of the band community, especially the marching band side and can prove it through the use of logos, ethos, and pathos. Some students may try to convince you to not join marching band for many excess amounts of reasons. For example, the long hot days we battle, the short water breaks, extensive training, etc.Throughout this analysis you will come into conclusion that in the end it is all worth it. Khalil Gibran once said "Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars". In other words, it doesn 't matter how much you suffer, all that pain will make you someone stronger both personality and physically wise when it comes to marching band. They include the apartment buildings, the rubber hose, Willy's brother Ben, the tape recorder, and the seeds for the garden. These symbols represent Willy's attempts to be successful and his impending failure. In the start Willy and Linda moved to a home in Brooklyn, as it at the time seemed far removed form the city. Death of a salesman is partly expressionistic, meaning that the central ideas are conveyed through symbols, symbols which involve the peaceful suburbs versus the city are, the flute as Willy's father was a musician and the playing of the flute reminds Willy of the peace that there was before the outline of the towering apartment buildings closed in on his house. Other symbols include the stockings that Linda is mending while; unknown to her, Willy is giving new stockings to another woman who he is having an affair with without Linda knowing and the teenage Biff accuses Willy of giving away Linda's stockings to the women. The hose in Death of a Salesman directly relates to the theme of death, the hose is a line attached to the gas main in Willy's house, which allows him to breathe the gas in to commit suicide. The hose also represents grief and deception. When Linda finds the hose she is afraid of its intended purpose. The tape recorder could show the change in Willy's life through the advancement of technology, and signifies the point at which Willy's career ends. Alcibiades In Plato's Symposium Essay The Tragedy of Alcibiades in Plato's Symposium In Symposium, a selection from The Dialogues of Plato, Plato uses historical allusions to demonstrate Alcibiades' frustration with both social expectations for the phallus and his inability to meet these expectations. Alcibiades' inability to have a productive sexual relationship effectively castrates him and demonstrates the impotence caused by an overemphasis on eroticism. The tragedy of Alcibiades is that he realizes he is unable to gain virtue through sexual relationships and will therefore be forced to remain mortal, yet he is unable to alter his condition. Socrates attempts to justify homosexual relationships by quoting Diotima's differentiation between heterosexual relationships ("those who are pregnant in terms of their bodies" and produce children) and homosexual relationships (those "who are pregnant in terms of the soul" and produce "prudence and the rest of virtue" in their partner) (Plato 271).2 This ideal of productivity in homosexual relationships is realized by the lover passing knowledge and wisdom on to his beloved. Thus, Socrates successfully justifies homosexual relationships; with this reasoning, he demonstrates to the other partygoers that their homosexual relationships must be productive to be justified. Despite Alcibiades' numerous male lovers (Crane),3 Plato portrays Alcibiades as unable to realize any productive sexual relationship (Crane Plutarch)4 because he fails to become the virtuous man that a productive relationship would have produced. Alcibiades admits that he occasionally succumbs "to the honor [he gets] from many." Alcibiades is referring to the instances when, instead of spending time with Socrates, he "surrender[s] himself to the flatterers who [tempt] him with many pleasures" (Crane Plutarch). Loss Of Happiness In The Tin Flute, By Gabrielle Roy When people have a chance at being happy they throw everything they have into that opportunity because they do not want it to pass by them and live the rest of their life wondering what if. The Sambia tribe is patriarchal, in which the men have the control or rule, similar to most American house hold; however, that is changing. Understanding the way sex influences or impacts our lives is very important. Not only do humans interact sexually but also many animals. Human sexuality is being able to be comfortable with one to be able to interact with others in a deeper level. The Sambia tribe treats sex as something dirty and unpleasable but rather than a way to show their masculinity. Also, they go very far into the forest to be able to engage in sexual activity. In my option the Sambia lack sexual literacy. According to Herdt, In order to become sexual literate, "...you can develop healthy and positive attitudes in your thinking, communication, and lifestyle that will result that in satisfying sexual relationships when you decide you're ready for sexual intimacy." The men was more open to sexual activities and engaged at a very young age but for a women they had to wait until marriage. However, they would only engage in oral sex until they started to menstruate. Herdt mentions, "[Important sexual literacy is] being able to emotionally ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. How Did Ancient Peoples Make Music? How did ancient peoples make music? Music is the oldest language in the world and has been used since the dawn of time to give expression to emotions, feelings, and ideas that could not be put into words. The oldest known musical instrument is the flute, which is at least 35,000 years old. The flute has changed over the course of its long history, from century to century, society to society. Theflute's design, the sounds it produces, and its purpose has evolved from ancient flutes, to medieval flutes, to the Baroque and Romantic flutes, and, finally, modern flutes. The ancient flute started out as simple "hollowed out bones or sticks with an embouchure hole" ("Timeline of Flute History"), the embouchure hole being where the player blows into the instrument. Evidence of the ancient transverse flute is found in artwork from Western Europe, the Middle East, and Asia ("Timeline of Flute History"). European transverse flutes appear for the first time in Etruscan iconographs from the first to the fourth centuries B.C. ("Vienna Symphonic Library"). Ancient flutes were also made from baked clay pipes or reeds ("Flute"). Bamboo flutes were used in East Asia, Sumer, and Egypt. The ancient Sumerians and Egyptians were among the first to add 3–4 finger holes to their bamboo flutes ("Vienna Symphonic Library"). The oldest playable musical instruments yet found are from the Henan Province in China and are roughly 9,000 years old. These flutes are made from the hollow wing bones of the ... • 15. The Status of Women in China As Explained in Two Essays... Throughout time, women have often been referred to as the inferior gender. In China, women have had to go through dire circumstances in order to look good in the public eye. From foot binding, to enduring abusive husbands, to becoming concubines in a prison–like house, women have been through hell in order to please their men, and, most importantly, to please their society. There are a series of double standards and contradictions to how men and women are treated, and this is shown in both Lu Xun and Qiu Jun's essays as well as in the film, Raise the Red Lantern. Set the scene: it is China during the 1920s and women do not have a voice. Zoom in to a woman walking into a house that looks like a gray prison–zone. This is her new home. She ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This double standard that was placed on women is portrayed through the entire movie. For example, Songlian was an educated woman, and there was a moment in the film when she wished to play her flute, but, upon finding it missing, she immediately began searching for it. As it turned out, the Master had the flute burned because he had suspected that it was from a college boy. He used the flute to keep Songlian in her place because, at the time, women were not supposed to know how to play flutes, a point proven when Songlian had confronted her maid and her maid simply stated, "Flutes can only be played by men" (Raise the Red Lantern). However, at the end of the film, Songlian seems to come to the realization that she is happier by herself than she is while fighting with the other wives to receive the Master's attention. Songlian had initially lost herself to the role of a concubine, but it is shown that, through the harshness of her realization and of witnessing the hanging of the third wife, she went insane. She seemed to have lost all will to live because she was stuck. She could not escape this life, and, instead of playing along, she simply gave up. In fact, Songlian lost her role as a woman by the end. She was referred to as "the Hysteric" instead of a woman, a wife, or a concubine (Raise the Red Lantern). Even it points out the version that it follows. As I have tried out all the comments on this piece, I found that the changes make music sound more interesting and artistic. For instance, the Sonata in B–flat major for flute and Basso continuous second movement Allegro. In the third measure, it suggests the note 2 changed from F to A. After this changing, the melody of flute sounds more interesting. In the measure six, it suggests moving the slur from notes 3–4 for notes 2–4. Then, I will examine the courtroom scene of the play and argue that Philocleon is not an impartial juror. Next, I will discuss generational gap in Athens. Finally, I will conclude the paper with my outcome of the investigation of the conflict between Misocleon and Philocleon. The Wasps is a comedy that was performed in 422 BC, towards the end of the first Peloponnesian War, at an annual Athenian festival. The play discusses real features of Athenian life, specifically political life. The Wasps opens with two slaves, Sosias and Xanthias, sleeping outside a house with a large net spread over it. Their master, Bdelycleon, is asleep on a wall that overlooks the courtyard where Sosias and Xanthias sleep. They reveal that they are guarding the father of their master, Philocleon, because he is addicted to the court of law. Philocleon attempts to escape, however Sosias, Xanthias, and Misocleon keep him inside the netted area. Soon, the Chorus arrives to try to rescue Philocleon from imprisonment, however, Misocleon and Philocleon agree to have a logical discussion. Philocleon explains how calm he feels when in the courthouse and how he enjoys the flattery and being noticed by old and important men. He then discusses how after he is paid by the court, he feels powerful at home. When it is Misocleon's turn, he explains that juries are not paid ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This event was held on Sunday afternoon in Ferguson Hall at the University of Minnesota. It was held in a small auditorium similar to a class setting. Barthold was accompanied by a student flutist and pianist. A lot of time was spent with the flutist and pianist playing a part of a piece, and him teaching and demonstrating on how to improve a piece and explaining the fundamentals of the music. It was a very informative event/class. Barthold Kujiken was born March 8, 1949. He's a Belgian flutist and recorder player. He attended Bruges Conservatory and the Royal Conservatories of Brussels and The Hague, where he studied the modern flute. He is best known for playing baroque music on authentic instruments such as the flute. He played in baroque orchestras for many years, and then went off to playing chamber music concerts all over the world, where he extended to playing 19th century music. The majority of the event he talked about Sonata's. As we discussed in class, a sonata is a solo instrument accompanied by a keyboard. In this case the solo instrument was the flute and it was accompanied by a piano. The flutist played a major sonata. As she played apiece he would stop her and tell her a few things to change to improve the piece, and she would play that piece once again with the revisions. One of the other things he told her was to play the sonata without any ornaments just the skeleton. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Bassoon Research Paper Although the exact origin of the bassoon is unknown (JSTOR 7–14), we do know that the earliest versions of the bassoon appeared in Italy, around the 15th century. The earliest form of the bassoon was a wooden instrument, folded in half (to reduce the vertical size of the instrument). There were many bassoon–like instruments in the late 14th/early 15th century (JSTOR 48). One example could be the low–register shawm. This instrument was a larger version of a late 14th century oboe. Even though the low–register shawm was folded, it was still more like an oboe than it was a bassoon. However, the dulcian had the most bassoon–like qualities. Whistle: The physiology of the whistle register is the most poorly understood of the vocal registers. It is known that when producing pitches in this register vibration occurs only in some anterior portion of the vocal folds. This shorter vibrating length naturally allows for easier production of high pitches. The physiological process that causes this is not currently known. Though the whistle register is most commonly used to produce pitches above E6, it can be used to produce lower pitches. By the physiological definition just detailed, it is a configuration of the vocal folds and not a range of pitches. There is, however, no universally agreed upon scheme for classifying vocal registers, so it is common to see other definitions. See the article on vocal registration for a discussion. Different kinds of flutes appeared in different pitches.5 In the music that Bach wrote for flute, he did not, like all the composers at that period of time, specify the type of flute they writing for. In addition, there is a possibility that different flutes were used in different performances. All flutes were written as if they were in the key of D especially in the first quarter of the 18th century. As a result, it is difficult to judge which flute the composer had in mind from the music.6 In the journal "J. S. I used to think that I did not have great skills in the music field. Even though everyone in my family is a music person I did not learn or get the skills like they did. You could follow the entire story of the music just with their facial expressions. The third piece of the song was fast or vivace and fortissimo. The song was almost rushed, as if something bad had happened or the were running from something. it did not sound deep or dark at all so maybe it was not bad. II. • 40. Magic Flute Analysis Die ZauberflГ¶te, The Magic Flute is composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It is a singspiel in two acts. Its German libretto is written by Austrian actor and theatrical producer Emanuel Schikaneder. In early 1791, Mozart was deeply in debt as his music no longer appealed to the Viennese public. Thus Mozart was extremely keen when Emanuel Schikaneder suggested that they work together on a new opera. Schikaneder had arrived in Vienna in 1789. He managed the Theater–auf–der–Wieden, a theatre that specialized in popular German–language musical entertainment, which were often comical with foreign or fantastic settings. Soon after his arrival, Schikaneder had been extremely successful with the "magic opera" Oberon by composer Paul Wranitzky and librettist Carl Ludwig Giesecke. Following this success, Schikaneder decided to write the libretto to The Magic Flute, with Mozart composing the music. Schikaneder promised to give Mozart the rental fees for productions following the premiere. However, he later went back on his word and for years, Mozart's widow fought for the money while The Magic Flute made profit all over Europe. The Magic Flute began composition in May/June and most of it was completed by July. Mozart composed most of the music in a little hut on the grounds of Theater–auf–der–Wieden. In mid–September, Mozart began the final preparations for the premiere of The Magic Flute, which included composing the Overture, the part of his opera which he always wrote last. The full score of The Magic Flute was finished on September 28th and it premiered at Theater–auf–der–Wieden on September 30, 1791. Mozart conducted the orchestra, while Schikaneder sang the role of Papageno. Mozart wrote many vocal parts for specific singers he knew. One example is The Queen of the Night, whose arias require the singer to sing F6, which is extremely demanding. For the less experienced singers, Mozart wrote and supported their parts with the orchestra. On the opening night, although the performance was good, the audience did not respond enthusiastically as the unconventional and wide range of music in the opera were breaking the norms and expectations of what an opera was. However, this sparked immense curiosity and drew in huge ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. The Magic Flute Analysis The recitative tells the story and the aria responds emotionally to what just happened. The recitative refers to song–speech. It is derived from the Italian verb meaning "to recite" and its purpose is to portray the quality of speech. The no. 4 recitative of The Magic Flute is where we are introduced to the Queen of the Night. The recitative is in the key of B–flat major and continues the Allegro maestoso tempo marking of the entrance music. It starts with a syncopated accompaniment figure which is useful in creating a disturbed and restless mood, making listeners wary of the Queen of the Night. Mozart adopts secco accompagnato, an old style from the Baroque operas. However, Mozart did not entirely utilise the Baroque opera styles and structures. Baroque arias were characteristically in the ternary form, which was a reason for their downfall as the music did not move with a strong sense of direction– it always ends where it started, which stopped the progress. Mozart changed it in a number of ways. He used the orchestra as a filling more complex than in earlier music, and a way for mood setting, which is a crucial difference compared to before. When the Queen of the night starts to sing, dry chords are played in the orchestra to keep the singer in tune and also emphasise certain words. The secco accompaniment brings the music to modulate to the relative G minor. This leads into the aria. The aria is kind of in binary form, however it is not exactly binary as the two parts are not related. The first part starts in G minor in Larghetto and shows us the introverted, worried and anxious side of the Queen as she remembers the horror of her daughter's kidnapping. The second part of the aria is back to B–flat major and is in Allegro moderato. This part portrays her bossy and commanding personality as she orders Tamino to rescue her daughter. This aria would be more appropriately classified as through–composed as the music follows the text. The Queen of the Night attempts to create a firm image of herself, but the music betrays her. It shows her lack of control. The very rapid shifting between emotions suggests that she is fickle and shows that her faГ§ade is extremely shallow. In the recitative, Mozart uses a ...
