Christian Bocalan completed a 240-hour on-the-job training internship at Harada Automotive Antenna (Philippines) Inc. in their Import/Export department. During the 5-week period, he learned how to use office equipment like printers and fax machines. He also sorted documents, prepared bills and invoices, and counted inventory in the warehouse. The training provided valuable experience in applying his classroom knowledge in a real work environment.

8. INTRODUCTION
On-the-Job Training is one way by which we, students are given an opportunity to
apply the theories and computations that we have learned from school. It also helps us to
obtain applicable knowledge and skills by performing in actual work setting. Colleges
and Universities require their students to undergo such training within a specific number
of hours as part as part of the curriculum.
For us students, an OJT or internship program provides opportunity to go through
the actual methodologies of a specific job using the real tools, equipment, and documents
.In effect, the workplaces becomes a development venue for us student trainee to learn
more about our chosen field and practice what we have learn from school.
On-the-Job Training simply means training for students to complete a task or
function when they are already placed and working. The more complex businesses get,
the more their managers will see the benefits of on the job training. This type of training
can help students to become more familiar with the realities of working; in some cases,
on-the-job training may lead to a stable and fulfilling career.. In some cases, these work
skills will be counted as credits towards a school diploma.
Accepting On-the-Job Trainees can truly be beneficial not only to be trainees but
also to the companies that provide opportunities for this type of learning. Such training
can be investment that we will be valuable to the company later on. This is also why we
trainees should take our internship seriously as it can become a powerful tool and
possibly even a source of recommendation when they take that big lift from being student
to career professionals.
9. Significance of the On -The -Job Training
OJT or On-the-Job Training - this type of training can help students to become
more familiar with the realities of working; in some cases, On-the-Job Training may lead
to a stable and fulfilling career. Students may well pick up new skills they can use for a
variety of purposes. Many students may continue on with an employer after On-the-Job
Training ends, leading to a successful new stream of income. On-the-Job Training is
useful and simple to learn the jobs that can be learned by watching and doing. On-the-job
training is conducted at the actual work station; hence, employees can get first-hand
experience from the job as they learn it through actual equipment’s and materials.
Since On-the-Job Training is supervised by real employees in real-life work
situations, anything can happen, and students must learn "on their feet". Sometimes,
this sink or swim method of learning can be quite beneficial. Students will adjust to
working, and they will gain invaluable experience that they can take with them as
they move forward with future careers and education. On the other hand, to help students
to continue improve themselves and gain more knowledge and to prepare them in the
future battle of their chosen career. On the Job Training is a program which is especially
designed for young people in which they can combine work experience with learning the
skills and requirements that are necessary for entering or re-entering the working
world. It helps the individuals to know the requirements of the job and thus after training
they become able to perform their duties in most efficient and productive manner.
2
10. Objectives of the On-The-Job Training
1. To provide opportunities for the students to apply the theories and principles
they have learned in the school to actual work situation;
2. To allow the students to gain first-hand insight and information about the
profession/career they are going into;
3. To make the students appreciate the value and importance of hard work;
4. To provide opportunities for the students to gain knowledge, skills and values
that will make them better persons and will give them greater chances for employment.
5. To provide opportunities for the students to learn from and network with
experienced professionals;
6. To provide opportunities for the students to learn how to handle new challenges
and complex tasks or problems;
7. To help the students identify future career directions.

14. THE TRAINING AREAS
In fulfilling the required number of hours for the internship of the trainee, the
Marketing Department of the Active Realty and Development Corporation become his
training area for almost a month. On the other hand, considering the fact that he as a
student, should learn a lot from this program. This benefits him a lot and gave him an
unforgettable experiences and learning.
Department Function
An import and export department has a wide range of duties that deal with each
step of the shipping process. They track shipments and communicate with clients about
the package's progress. They coordinate shipping with customs agents for clearance on
overseas deliveries. They also deal with quotes from prospective shippers and handle
claims with insurance companies if any shipment problems happen to occur.
20. THE TRAINING EXPERIENCES
Tasks Performed
Week 1, June 2-9, 2017
On the first day of my On -The -Job Training (OJT) at Harada Automotive Antenna
(Philippines), I was very excited and somewhat nervous because of the new environment
and the new people around me. At first, I don’t have any idea of what kind of people they
are and it made me adjust myself with their personalities and attitudes. I was introduced
to our designated department. Mr. Ryan Ona oriented me about the company rules and
regulations. Even the Dos' and Don’ts were discussed too. He also introduced us to the
staffs and employees.
It was a short briefing and orientation. After the introduction, to start with our
work, Mr Ryan Ona assigned me in the IMPEX (Import and Exports) Department. Then
I started to work. I was taught how to operate a Xerox machine and printing machine,
how to make telephone calls, and how to receive incoming calls.
Week 2, June 13-16, 2017
I woke up early at exactly 6 o'clock in the morning. It was 8:00 am when the
official time for work started. The first task assigned to me was sorting the export
documents and file in the document file. After that, my co-trainee taught me how and
where the tax reports are taken from docs. I encoded the tax report from those who
deliver the materials imported to the company and those incoming deliveries and
materials supplied by the supplier to the company.
21. Week 3, June 19-23, 2017
As usual, the working hours started at 8:00 am. Ms. Ronelien Estorninos told
me to make a bill that came to the company and she taught me how to do the billings that
came from the brokers. And I did the billings for Brokers like Yusen, K line, FedEx, and
etc to pay for the company to distribute its products to other branch outside the country
such as Harada Industry Dalian (HID), Harada Industry Japan, Harada Industry America
(HIA), Harada Industry Europe (HIE) Harada Industry Asia Pacific (HAP), and then
make a bill to be signed by the general manager of the company Then I first wrote the
check preparation in the log book. Then the accounting will process the paper to be paid
by the broker. I finished the bills. I compiled the documents and put the labels in order to
make it easier to search for it in case that it needed. Here, we kept the original copies of
the company.
Week 4, June26-30, 2017
On my fourth week, there is no work in the production area because it was
inventory week. Only the office staffs were working because they were in-charge of
counting the materials in the warehouse. Sir Mark Gerald Moceno instructed me to join
them in counting the materials in the warehouse. I was assigned to count the printed
circuit board and resistor and it should be tallied with the one counted by the people in-
charge in warehouse.
14
22. Week 5, July 3-7, 2017
I put label on document files. Sir Jerome Mansanque taught me how to count the goods
that will be brought to customers in overseas like Harada Industry Japan (HIJ), Harada
Industry Dalian (HID), Harada Industry Asia Pacific (HAP), Harada Industry America
(HIA), Harada Industry Europe (HIE), customers of Harada industry Philippines. When
he showed me the shipment summary, I wrote what item and how many boxes per box
should be tally on the list of warehouse units as well as on the log sheet. The guard will
be placed in the container. After that, I learned everything in the loading area. Then, Sir
Jerome told me to use his personal computer so that I can learn how to make invoice in
QAD Software Company. Invoice, in order for the customers to know, what vessel it is,
to know the date of its delivery and arrival to the customer. Also, it tells the price and the
number of goods in each box. When making invoice, you need a shipment summary from
the planning department that is in-charge in writing the sales order of the customer. And
it will be brought to IMPEX DEPT that will make the documents.
Week 6, July 10-14, 2017
On my 6th week, I learned the process of exporting documents. Ma'am Shalli
instructed me to photocopy and scan the documents. Those documents are emailed to the
customers and brokers in order for them to know that the products that would be exported
are written in this document. It is needed for the proper receiving of the products. It's also
15
23. for the sake of the customers, in order for them to know when it would be delivered. We,
and the customers and brokers should have each own copy of the documents in case of
some difficulties. And then the document will be picked up by the guard from the office
with the seal. This seal serves as the identification of the container and it will also be the
basis of the document as the seal is also written in the document. And then, the maid also
explained to me the difference between by sea and by air. In the method of by sea, it is
easy to make documents, even if how many invoice number are together. Frequently,
containers have different invoice numbers. This method is cheaper than by air and the
duration of the arrival at the port is within 3 to 4days.The by air is the urgent cargo that
needs to be given more difficult to make a doc as each invoice has a separate document
and the fee is more expensive but faster. It came to the customer only 1 to 2 days. I also
learned the two terms of delivery, the Free O n-Board (FOB) and Cost and Freight
(CFR). FOB is a way of the partition of payments of customers and suppliers. For
example, the HIP is going to export products to HIJ. HIP would be the one to answer the
expenses used until in the port of Philippines. And if the products are already in the port
of Japan, the HIJ is liable for the expenses. While in CFR, customer is the only liable for
the payment. For example, the HIP is going to export materials to HIJ. All the expenses
that the HIP spent on delivering the materials will be paid by the HIJ.
Week 7, 19-21, 2017
This is the last week of being a trainee at Harada. I can say that I am well-
trained. I've learned all the process here. We were so busy in this week because there are
5 containers that should be documented. And we were assigned to count a lot of box of
goods in the loading area. We also did a lot of invoice number. I came back and forth in
16
24. the planning area to get the shipment summary. Most of the export we did is urgent that's
why we needed to make the documents as long as possible because there's a cut off.
There were many containers that are needed to be documented. Thursday and Friday are
just exports because it was air-cooled and it was easy to count and there are a lot of
documents. That’s why this week, we were so busy. Friday, July 21, 2017 was my last
day as an intern. I’m quite sad because I really enjoyed working in Harada Automotive
Antenna (Philippines) Inc especially with the whole IMPEX family. They are all friendly
and very accommodating. They are fun to be with and there is really no dull moment with
them. Maybe that’s one of the reasons why I don’t want my internship to end and I still
want to extend my training here. I realized that if you like what you’re doing and you
have a good working relationship with people, you will not feel that you’re tired. In my
case, I want to go to work because I’m excited to be with the whole IMPEX staff and I’m
looking forward for new happy moments with them every day. I really don’t want to end
my OJT here because I’m really having funs hard for me to end my contract as a trainee
here in Harada. Because I became close to the people here.. In fact during my last week, I
just recorded 8 hours even if I extended my stay at the office. I also realized that having
a good working relationship with your colleagues and loving what you do is really a big
help. You won’t feel that you’re tired and you won’t be lazy to do any task. Rather, you
would be excited to go to work and won’t complain about the work load because that’s
what you want to do.
17
25. Strengths and Weaknesses of the Training Area
Through my observation during my stay in the company, some strengths that I
may consider is their harmonious relationship inside the company, the good
communication, and being an open minded and willing to accept their mistakes. While
the weaknesses are that they are not consistent when it comes to the rules and regulations
of the company, dress code is not properly monitored, and even the eating habit during
working hours.
Insight
The training inside the company is a learning experience each day. I learned to
appreciate the lessons studied in school. I was able to realize the importance of theories
and formula that was discussed inside the classroom and also to understand that
everything that was taught inside the school can be tool that can be used in future career.
As a trainee working at Harada Automotive Antenna (Philippines) Inc, I learned
to become a hard working person. Time to complete the output products is not important,
but the quality. I also learned to follow the instructions of the superiors and to accept
opinion that they learned to follow the instructions as what the superiors said and to
accept opinion that they’ve suggested.
Lastly, as a trainee, I learned that the On-the-Job Training is not just a subject to
be passed or a requirements to be completed but it is an opportunity to show what skills,
talents and techniques that the student learned from the school and also an opportunity to
experience the life outside the campus; serving the company’s like a professional on the
field of the students’ specialization.
18
26. Problems Encountered
The trainee encountered some problems here. The presence of insects within
the box of goods, the occurrence of disasters that resulted in the arrival of customer
products, late fueling, the exhaust of the container in the custom, the wrong container
number, the availability of the same invoice number, the invoice number is incorrect, the
company's customer email is delayed, the firm's slow response to the company, and the
massive destruction of QAD software.
Suggestions for Improvement
When it comes to the important documents that were ready to be released or
picked up by the clients, they must provide more cabinets for keeping the important
documents. During my stay in Harada Automotive Antenna (Philippines) Inc., I observed
that there is a lack of manpower in the IMPEX department, and there’s a lack of supply
of document files and small office space. They can also provide office or room for the
trainees. They should also add another Xerox machine so that there is no delayed in
photocopying and printing of documents.
19
27. SUMMARY
The trainee learned a lot during his training at Harada Automotive Antenna
(Philippines) Inc., He was exposed in the actual work in the IMPEX Department and
became familiar with the documents. He also learned to become a hard-working person.
The time to finish the task assigned to him is important, but it is also important that he
should do it correctly. He learned to appreciate even the simplest lessons studied in
school.
The trainee was able to realize the importance of theories and formulas that were
discussed in school and can be a tool that can be used in his future career. Because during
the On-the-Job Training, some terms that he have learned from school were used in the
company especially those terms that are related to his course. As he was conducting his
training there, he also learned to follow the instructions, to accept failure, and learned
from it.
