2. “Souled Out” is the
debut studio album of
R&B American artist
Jhené Aiko, released in
late 2014.
3. Her album cover is a painted picture rather than
photographed. The imagery is out of the norm
with her floating up into the open space of clouds,
as though her soul is being taken away which
refers us back to the album title ‘souled out’. The
drawing of her is a long shot; her entire body is
included in the frame and she is quite small.
Jhene’s body language is quite vulnerable yet
freeing, she is posed with her arms and legs
sprung backwards, chest out and head down
facing the sky, like she is giving herself up and
letting this euphoria consume her whole being.
There is a lot of light in this picture – the clouds
pour out hidden natural light and the colours used
are quite bright shades which comes together to
make a luminous cover. Jhene Aiko is represented
in an innocent, pure and beautiful way. In the
picture, there are cream clouds hovering over a
rolling, vivid blue sea. Behind the clouds you can
spot the galaxy with stars sparkling all over and at
the same time there is this radiant sunlight
streaming through falling on Jhene. All these
natural elements create a very dynamic and
angelic feel of Jhene and her music.
There is little to no airbrushing here mainly
because it is not a photograph of Jhené Aiko. It is
a picture therefore there will be some detail
included, like the ripples in the ocean. It is a long
shot so we cannot really see the artists’ face or
body.
The text is simple and soft, displayed across the top. The
position and size of it is tucked away and small in plain
white, allowing more attention to be drawn to the art of the
imagery. ‘Jhené Aiko’ is written in joint writing, in a feminine
and delicate way which makes her and the cover look
dreamy and sweet, like that of a handwritten love note.

5. The CD has had the image of a dharma wheel printed over the design of galaxy
