3. The music genre of my music magazine is:
GENRE: Salsa
The genre I choose is Salsa and my chosen title is Salsero because its got to do with my
main Genre, Salsa but I changed the way salsa is spelt by putting Salsero, giving a tone to
the way it’s said, more moving. However the disadvantage of this title is that it’s a masculine
way of saying salsa, but by saying Salsera, it will be seen as a feminine magazine, so
Salsero was the only option, because it can be used for either male and female.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
My magazine will be targeted at people aged 20 years and over, for people who are mostly
Latina/o are matured individuals, university students who like different styles of music and
are less interested in R&B, Hip Hop and so on, by becoming interested in actual context of
Salsa music.
The person would be a happy, young and lively individual.
Would be a religious and well cultured male/female who likes to go out with friends, go
cinema, shopping, but also likes to study hard and make us of there opportunity's in life.
Researching into Salsa music magazines,
its set during summer because Salsa comes from South America, knowing this I have to
put lively summer themes to it, like beaches, festivals, what to wear, what Salsa clubs are
best, questions like this are found in Salsa music, young people would also be interested in
what the ‘celebrity's’ of Salsa have to say and what gossip they are bringing to us. The
target audience would like to relate to these magazine and feel like there involved in this
situation in some way, feeling there not alone.
4. Studied Research On Genre Magazine
Latin NY is the sub-heading of this magazine,
coloured light green and has baby pink on the fonts,
also yellow on other type phrases, which shows the
aliveness of Salsa music because from the research
I’ve done and know, Salsa is mostly an up beat type
of tune, mainly danced very fast with a feel free
move. It’s a very competitive dance in most places of
south America, mainly in Colombia because this is
where Salsa was first placed, not knowing salsa in
south America, would be discriminated against. Most
of the salsa artist are from Colombia, like Oscar
D’leon, who's in the front page of the magazine, this
is helpful for the reader as they know what type of
music magazine they are reading. There’s a big
heading, with a big font size and text, ‘night club rip
off’ meaning that its telling people or warning them of
clubs that are ripping them off, because knowing
about salsa, it’s a very important subject into knowing
where they will be going to dance and listen/or relax
while listening to this type of music, it attracts
audiences eye of which like this type of music.
5. Studied Research On Genre Magazine
Seeing all the type of magazines Latin NY sell, I
saw that there mainly sell music.
This is another magazine in which is based on
salsa music and or other music like Cuban music.
Latin NY is selling an advert on ‘Summer Carnival’,
which is why its at the end corner and background
coloured in bright orange, showing the importance
of the carnival event, all the other font sizes,
colours are much more smaller than this font or
less brighter, because the magazine is selling the
article about the carnival. This seems simple but
it’s very effective, the summer carnival is one of the
most important carnival done in South America, I
know this because ever since my childhood, south
American carnivals were seen as an important time
to be with your people and celebrate with this big
traditional dances. There’s one main image of a
woman wearing traditional clothes of some place in
south America, showing that carnivals on soon,
and from the face expression she shows, explains
to us that carnival is a time for gathering together
and celebrating this occasion.
6. 1)
This Magazine ‘Latin N.Y’ is targeted to woman, we can
see this from the colour used in the mast head, pink,
which is the primary colour for female audience. We
know its targeted to woman because of the main image
used, with two woman enjoying their summer, we know
its summer because they are located in a bright place
and are equipped with an ‘ice cream’, which is mostly
eaten in summer, the text on top of the magazine saying
‘hot summer tips on cool places to go’ clearly stating that
it’s a summer magazine. The main image of the woman
can be identified, shown as exposing unnecessary
enjoyment, because the one on the left is exposing an
excitement on another level, rather than showing
summer joy, however the one on the left looks more
sensible and works well for this magazine. The heading
‘Salsa Roots’ is layered out at the bottom of the main
image, technique used is bold and coloured yellow,
which I think is specifically done because summer is
seen as a yellow type theme of time. Its also a salsa
magazine, texts like ‘salsa people’ ‘salsa roots’ tell us
this, I think that the publisher done the theme of summer
because it relates to salsa which is listened in south
America, a hot country. The texts Salsa people would
interested people who like salsa, more like people that
dance to this type of music and from the colour’s used
yellow, pink and orange it shows the variety us of
colours, detailing the colours used or the feel of how
salsa music a is , exciting and lively.
7. 2)
The first thing that stands out from this magazine is the
main image of the woman, which is exposing this woman’s
body and can make other woman admire this because
they believe it’s showing her beauty, making them want to
be like this, however this woman doesn’t look so happy in
the image by the way she's posing, it looks very
uncomfortable. She looks elegant, yet isn't posing like so.
Red is also another thing that stands out, it’s the only
colour which is really used, apart from white, which can
mean that its a romantic type of music magazine. Seeing
the texts used here, shows that it’s a salsa magazine, but
from the artist used 'Andy Gonzalez’ we can see that the
type of genre isn't fast and lively salsa music but does
slow and romantic music. So I’d say from knowing what
artist’s are used in this magazine, it shows that its
targeted at people aged 25 and over, 20% of them would
be around 18, which also like salsa music. The name
under the woman helps the viewer’s identify who it is, ‘
Sonia Braga’ a Brazilian actress, who was very popular at
her times, and is a great image to be used because it
interreges other people into reading the magazine as it’s
not based just on one subject.
8. Comparison of Two
Magazine’s
Both magazines 1 and 2 are good examples of salsa music magazines, however the second magazine
works best as it has a more familiar face to it, rather than the first one, which has two unknown
woman, which could always signify a teenage magazine of two girls going to have fun for summer,
which isn't the main point about salsa , although the colours used works really well as the colours
really show the representation of salsa music, it gives the feel of how salsa is, which as in the second
magazine, doesn’t do, only two colours were used which can make the magazine look dull,
surprisingly it looks very elegant and gives the knowledge that it was set in deco times, and from the
text given, shows that the artist were the romantic type of music artist.
Overall I think that the second magazine works out the best as it has more information about the
artist’s, than summer activity’s, which doesn’t work as well because a music magazine should be
identified from the very perspective of the front page which it wasn’t. and the image used isn't a very
interesting image nor was it of someone known, which gives them a less chance that someone will
buy it, rather than the second one, which has someone very popular in the famous industries which
gives them a bigger percentage of someone buying this.
10. Institution
The publisher of Latin NY is Izzy Sanabria.
Latin NY was published from 1973 till 1985. He
was also a Graphic Artist, Actor and Emcee-
Comedian.
Through the media industry he saw that salsa is a
great rhythm for target audience’s which are aged
20 and over, looking through his magazine's they
are lively and full of colour, outstanding, bringing
the music of salsa to magazine’s. Izzy’s stated as
“Mr Salsa” because he popularized the term
“Salsa” during the 1970’s, which was then seen by
the media to be know as the New York Latin
music.
Izzy’s bold colourful magazine cover’s, were
shown throughout New York, documented Salsa’s
subculture events in a way that Moulin Rouge’s
Poster’s in Paris.
. Izzy's album cover designs and illustrations also
set new understanding of quality in Latin music
packaging and provided the world with its first
visual imagery of Salsa.
11. My magazine will be based on Salsa music, so I’ve decided to
name my magazine ‘Salsero’ as it’s a feminine and masculine
form of saying salsa, showing it’s for both girls and boys, it will
be targeted to people over the age of 18 as that’s the age
people become more open to different things. It will be
targeted to people who also come from South America; as it’s
were salsa originally comes from. The composition of the text
will be organised with two columns, as I want to put the main
image on the right side, filling most of that space, with a man
and woman dancing Salsa, positioned in an interesting form,
bringing curiosity of what the magazine will be talking about.
Two more images will be placed at the side, one with a famous
Salsa singer, small text will be written underneath to show
what it will be talking about, also an image of a club will be at
the bottom of this so that it can give various options of what to
read, it lets Salsa fans know where the next best clubs of
Salsa is. The main cover line will be underneath the main
image informing what the biggest news in ‘Salsero’ is. Bar
Statement
code will be held next to the main cover line and the price will
be held beside it, as it costs £1.99, which is a decent amount
to pay, because its audience would be working class people
The background will probably be red because it’s usually a
colour in which a Salsa dancer wears, and by researching into
salsa magazines there would be 2 out of 5 magazines which
of
would be filled with a red background, or I would like to cover
most of the magazine with two Salsa dancer’s and have a dark
background of people in a night club of Salsa. Sub headings
are all coloured in white to stand out the red background and
make the target audience more focused in the main image but
Intent
also in the sub headings, by making them bigger and smaller
than each other, having various proportions of texts, so It won’t
bore the target audience.
12. IMAGERY Or an image like this
because red
represents salsa in the
dance industry, also
For my main image I will tango but by using
like to use an image like different types of fonts
this as it’s a typical in my context I could
imagery which is identify explain that the
as a salsa move, magazine is salsa
specially as the people
here are Latin, and we
cans this as there
tanned, have black long
hair and it cant be
confused with an
European persona as
there rather pail and
pink cheeked, have
blond hair
I could also have a close up of two
salsa dancers, like shown here,
showing the exoticness of salsa music
as it’s very intense and needs a lot of
focus on, bringing attention to target
audience, it will immediately hit their
mind that this is a salsa magazine as
the colour, red is very important and
acknowledges that this is a salsa
related colour.
13. Fonts/Layout
I would like the layout of my magazine to be
done like so as it shows the main image,
making it easier to read the context of the
magazine
Also the words are written in big font letter’s
to make it focused on and making it
interesting for the reader to read, by not
reading a long biology. The colour of words
used is bright enough to make the target
audience appeal more to the context and i like the way this mast head was done,
comparing yellow with the word stress. I and I’d like to do something like this as it
would like to use this type of layout and reflects on the main image, the iron man
colour as it brings both male and female which then aware’ the audience about
audience onto reading this type of magazine, what’s in the magazine, it’s highlighted
with electric light, exploiting what the iron
however I wouldn’t use an image of just a
man is about, showing that this
woman as it establishes a different target magazine is properly evolved around
audience onto reading it, that’s why I would films, for example films that are in the
use a male/female image which pose in a way same genre
that it’s telling the audience it’s a salsa
magazine without having to say it.
This mast head is also another way of which I want to do my mast
head, it reflects with the main image, making it more appealing to
the target audience, informing them without having to say anything,
then has small texts, which doesn’t reveal the whole story just a
small part.
