Chapter 2
        The Wedding

    - How was the wedding arranged?
An average wedding lasted from 7 to 14 days depending on how much money the family had.
    - Where was the wedding?
The wedding was in Cana, a city of Galilee.
    - Who were the participants of the wedding?
Some of the guests at the wedding were Jesus, his disciples, and Mary (the mother of Jesus).
    - What relation did Mary have with the wedding?
Mary was a friend of the wedding family. It was a Jewish custom to only invite your closest friends and
relatives to the wedding feast and it states in the text that they had been invited.
    - How was Mary referred to in this text?
Mary was referred to as Jesus’ mother, but Jesus referred to her in verse 4 as “woman”.

   - What is the message behind this topic?

I believe that message is that Jesus’ mission was higher and more important than his any human
relationships he might have had, which is something that he taught his disciples that they should leave
their worldly relationships and follow him.

        The Wine Failed

    - Why was it so troubling to run out of wine in a wedding?
It was family of the bride and groom to keep the guests happy with both wine and food and it was almost
as if it was bad manners to have run out of wine so soon.
    - Why did they run out of wine?
I believe that they ran out of wine so that Jesus could demonstrate his power and glory.
    - Why was Mary concerned?
Since she was a friend of the family, she felt bad for them.
    - What is the message behind this topic?
The message is that the God who created the universe could easily transform something as basic as water
into something wonderful, but also that even at the darkest moments, there is always something better to
come.

        God’s Timing

   - Does God have a timing?
Yes, I believe that God has a timing.
   - Can God alter his timing?
Yes, I believe that God can alter his timing.
   - What is the message behind this topic?
We should always wait on the Lord and not try to control Him. We should let him take control and trust
that things will occur when He wills them to.
 Water Into Wine

    - What was the capacity of the jars?
The jar were six stone or otherwise 6 jars holding 20-30 gallons each making a total of 120 – 180 gallons
total.
    - Why did he instruct for the jars to be filled with water?
So, that there would be no doubt as to the miracle.
    - Where did the water come from?
The water came from the local well.
    - How much of the wine might have been used in the wedding?
More than 180 gallons
    - What was the purification of the Jews?
It was a custom for guests to have their feet washed before entering a house after having walked through
dirt all day. A host would have a servant at the door to wash the feet of the guests. The jars were actually
the water that would have been used for this tradition.
    - Why was the best wine served first?
The best wine was always served first as to impress the guests and the cheaper wine saved for later when
they wouldn’t know any better.
    - How does John refer to Gods miracle?
John refers to this miracle as Jesus’ first miracle.
    - What is the message behind the miracle?
The message behind this miracle is that God’s grace is abundant and available to all.
    - What was the purification of Jews?
John 15:1-11

God is the true wine.

         The Detail

   - Why was the best wine served first?
Jesus came first to his chosen ones.
   - How does John reffer to Gods miracle?
   - What is the message behind the miracle?

                                                                                                      Pg. 2

         The Temple

   - What was the passover?
The Passover was and is celebration of the deliverance of the Jewish people from Egyptian slavery.
   - Why were they selling animals in the temple?
They were selling animals because people needed the animals in order to offer sacrifices were diverse
occasions.
   - Why were there money changers?
This was a service that was needed.
   - Why was Jesus mad?
Jesus was mad because he felt that they were disrespecting the temple.
   - What temple was Jesus talking about when they asked him for a sign?
Jesus was referring to himself as the “temple”.
   - What was the message behind the text?
The message behind this text was that we need to show more reverence to God.
Extra Credit:

   1. Were these events prophecied?
   2. Do these events represent a prophecy for the future?
   3. Why would the celebration last a week?
   4. Why was this wine such a blessing for the couple?

  • 1. Pg. 1 Chapter 2  The Wedding - How was the wedding arranged? An average wedding lasted from 7 to 14 days depending on how much money the family had. - Where was the wedding? The wedding was in Cana, a city of Galilee. - Who were the participants of the wedding? Some of the guests at the wedding were Jesus, his disciples, and Mary (the mother of Jesus). - What relation did Mary have with the wedding? Mary was a friend of the wedding family. It was a Jewish custom to only invite your closest friends and relatives to the wedding feast and it states in the text that they had been invited. - How was Mary referred to in this text? Mary was referred to as Jesus’ mother, but Jesus referred to her in verse 4 as “woman”. - What is the message behind this topic? I believe that message is that Jesus’ mission was higher and more important than his any human relationships he might have had, which is something that he taught his disciples that they should leave their worldly relationships and follow him.  The Wine Failed - Why was it so troubling to run out of wine in a wedding? It was family of the bride and groom to keep the guests happy with both wine and food and it was almost as if it was bad manners to have run out of wine so soon. - Why did they run out of wine? I believe that they ran out of wine so that Jesus could demonstrate his power and glory. - Why was Mary concerned? Since she was a friend of the family, she felt bad for them. - What is the message behind this topic? The message is that the God who created the universe could easily transform something as basic as water into something wonderful, but also that even at the darkest moments, there is always something better to come.  God’s Timing - Does God have a timing? Yes, I believe that God has a timing. - Can God alter his timing? Yes, I believe that God can alter his timing. - What is the message behind this topic? We should always wait on the Lord and not try to control Him. We should let him take control and trust that things will occur when He wills them to.

The jar were six stone or otherwise 6 jars holding 20-30 gallons each making a total of 120 – 180 gallons total. - Why did he instruct for the jars to be filled with water? So, that there would be no doubt as to the miracle. - Where did the water come from? The water came from the local well. - How much of the wine might have been used in the wedding? More than 180 gallons - What was the purification of the Jews? It was a custom for guests to have their feet washed before entering a house after having walked through dirt all day. A host would have a servant at the door to wash the feet of the guests. The jars were actually the water that would have been used for this tradition. - Why was the best wine served first? The best wine was always served first as to impress the guests and the cheaper wine saved for later when they wouldn’t know any better. - How does John refer to Gods miracle? John refers to this miracle as Jesus’ first miracle. - What is the message behind the miracle? The message behind this miracle is that God’s grace is abundant and available to all. - What was the purification of Jews?
