Reproduction
The biological process of producing own kind of new
organisms by a living being is known as reproduction. It
has an important role for maintaining genetic continuity.
Importance of reproduction
 It retains the particular species of living organism.
 It transfers the parental characters to offspring.
 It also helps in evolution.
Type of reproduction
1) Asexual reproduction
2) Sexual reproduction
Difference between:
Asexual Reproduction Sexual Reproduction
 It occurs without fusion of
male and female gametes.
 Variation doesn’t occur.
 Only one parents is needed.
 It occurs with fusion of male
and female gamets.
 Variation occurs in offspring.
 Two parents involve.
Asexual and sexual Reproduction
Asexual Reproduction
The reproduction in which
new organisms are formed
from the parts of a parental
body instead of formation
of gametes is known as
asexual reproduction.
 This type of reproduction
occurs in lower organisms
like the amoeba, sponge,
hydra, etc.
Features of asexual reproduction
(i) In asexual reproduction only one organism is
involved.
(ii) In asexual reproduction mitosis cell division occurs.
(iii) Asexual reproduction takes place in short period.
(iv) In asexual reproduction, the offspring and the
parents are genetically similar.
Advantages of asexual
reproduction
 Asexual reproduction is easy, fast and economic.
 Asexual reproduction needs only one organism. So a
proper environment is not required as in the case of
sexual reproduction.
 The new plants produced by asexual method maintain
parental characteristics.
Asexual reproduction in organisms
In plants:
 Fission
 Budding
 Fragmentation
 sporulation
 vegetative
propagation.
In animals:
•Fission
•budding
•regeneration.
Fission
The process of formation of two or
more organisms by dividing a fully
developed organism is called fission.
It is of two types:
 (i) Binary fission: For example,
bacteria, diatoms, amoeba, euglena, etc.
 (ii) Multiple fission: For example,
chlamydomonas, plasmodium, etc.

Binary fission
In which two individual are formed from single parents.
Multiple fission
Many individual are formed from single individual.
Budding
Budding is a kind of asexual reproduction. It takes place due
to the formation of buds in the body of living organisms.
For example: yeast, hydra, etc.
In hydra In Yeast
Fragmentation
In fragmentation, the body of an individual breaks down into two or more
parts. Now, each part develops into a complete organism. For example:
spirogyra
Sporulation
The kind of asexual
reproduction that takes
place by the formation of
spores is known as
sporulation. For example:
mucor, moss, fern, etc.
 Spores
 Sporangium
Regeneration
In regeneration, an organism is divided into two or more parts.
Each part develops into a new organism in a favorable
environment. For example: hydra, tapeworm, planaria, etc.
Mother Planeria
Daughter
Planeria
Same as fragmentation
vagetative propagation:
Vegetative propagation is a type of asexual
reproduction which takes place from the parts of
the plants like the stem, roots , leaves, etc.
 In this process new plants are formed by cutting,
sewing or grafting any part of the plant.
Types of vegetative propagation
(i)From roots: Sweet potato, Dahlia
(ii)From leaves: Bryophyllum, Begonia
(iii)From stem: Rose plant, potato, onion, ginger, sugarcane.
Through Root Through leaves
Through stem
Advantages of vegetative
propagation
(i)Species of rare and endangered plants can be
conserved.
(ii)It is an economic and quick process.
(iii)It is applied to those plants which do not produce
good quality seeds.
(iv)Large numbers of plants can be developed from a
single plant
Few questions
1) What do you mean by asexual reproduction?
2) Vegetative propagation in boon for farmer. How?
3) How do binary fission is different than multiple
fission?
4) Write two example organism that reproduces by
budding?
5) Name two plants that reproduced by leaf.
