Pursuit of
  EmploymEnt……….

Group Name: *unicorn
Country : Sri Lanka
University of Moratuwa
If we go back to several thousand years , is there anything called unemployment?
                                          Answer is no.

Then what exactly happens to this modern world?

In that era main intention of people is to fulfill their basic needs but after the evolution of the
technology, needs of the people have changed. Everybody wants to have vehicles, big houses
                                      and a luxurious life.

                                How it relates to unemployment?

Because of that, occupations like mangers, doctors and other executive jobs have become the
mainstream. Entire education system was created to achieve those type of occupations.
Because of the limited amount of mainstream jobs, most of youth have become unemployed.
As an outcome of the system ,attitude and the motivation towards other jobs of the people
have changed and that help to spread the unemployment even further.

Is poverty a cause for unemployment?

Yes it is, but it has become a cause due to poor education structure
Sri Lanka unemployment rate in 2012 is 4%
      A developing country
Country is privileged to have free education system
                             Education structure
Primary Secondary G.C.E Ordinary Collegiate G.C.E Advanced
                                                                             University
                                  Level Level
   Grade 1-5 Grade 6-11 Grade 12-13 entrance
                              Examination Examination

According to the statistics,
About 40% make it to collegiate level and 6% of them make it to universities

       Most of them are Unemployed
                       or
work for very low salaries with low
               living conditions
Ordinary Education System
                                               Vocational skills
                        Education system
                                               Management knowledge
                                               Educational qualifications
                                               Motivation & attitude
                         Drop out from
                         the system

                                              Vocational skills
                                              Management knowledge
                                              Educational qualifications
                                              Motivation and attitude
     No Motivation…….
   oNot sure what to do…
oDo not see the potential of
                                                                    Reasons for
   certain industrial fields
                                                                    unemployment or to
                                                                    work for too low salary.

         Bad Attitude………
oDesperate to find white collar jobs oLack of qualifications to perform certain
oAlways search for easy money jobs.
ostatus which are set by the society. oLack of financial support for entrepreneurs.
These issues can be limited by introducing improved educational system
What is the solution?

            Education ministry and vocational
            Training institutes join together and
            conduct special vocational training
            program.

There are existing vocational training centers
in the country to provide vocational training
for the people who require it.
Why your solution is so special?

But, the problem is they are only targeting
school leavers and teach them only the
 occupational related basic technical things.
But this program will teach school students
and leavers everything which is related to a
 particular industry.
For example:-
In carpentry module, student is taught
How to manage your own business
    Easiest ways to find materials
    New technologies and trends
Legal and safety aspects related to the industry.
    How to find financial aid
How to go to top of the career hierarchy as a carpenter
After taking the course module…..

                           Practical
                             skills

                         Managerial
                           skills

                        Entrepreneur
                            skills
What is the main intention of making such a program?

Most important thing is by this kind of program students
can see how to reach into top level through varies
occupations. So they have the motivation to do that
sought of job .For an example a student who is good at or
like to do carpentry, agriculture..etc will choose that area
instead of trying to be doctor or engineer. This program
will provide very much educated skilled workers who can
                 achieve their dreams

Improved Education system

                                                   Educational qualifications
                                                   Motivation and attitude
                             Drop out

[Challenge:Future] Pursuit of Employment

  • 1. Pursuit of EmploymEnt………. Group Name: *unicorn Country : Sri Lanka University of Moratuwa
  • 2. If we go back to several thousand years , is there anything called unemployment? Answer is no. Then what exactly happens to this modern world? In that era main intention of people is to fulfill their basic needs but after the evolution of the technology, needs of the people have changed. Everybody wants to have vehicles, big houses and a luxurious life. How it relates to unemployment? Because of that, occupations like mangers, doctors and other executive jobs have become the mainstream. Entire education system was created to achieve those type of occupations. Because of the limited amount of mainstream jobs, most of youth have become unemployed. As an outcome of the system ,attitude and the motivation towards other jobs of the people have changed and that help to spread the unemployment even further. Is poverty a cause for unemployment? Yes it is, but it has become a cause due to poor education structure
  • 3. Sri Lanka unemployment rate in 2012 is 4% A developing country Country is privileged to have free education system Education structure Primary Secondary G.C.E Ordinary Collegiate G.C.E Advanced University Level Level Grade 1-5 Grade 6-11 Grade 12-13 entrance Examination Examination According to the statistics, About 40% make it to collegiate level and 6% of them make it to universities Most of them are Unemployed or work for very low salaries with low living conditions
  • 4. Ordinary Education System  Vocational skills Education system  Management knowledge  Educational qualifications  Motivation & attitude Drop out from the system Vocational skills Management knowledge Educational qualifications Motivation and attitude No Motivation……. oNot sure what to do… oDo not see the potential of Reasons for certain industrial fields unemployment or to work for too low salary. Bad Attitude……… oDesperate to find white collar jobs oLack of qualifications to perform certain oAlways search for easy money jobs. ostatus which are set by the society. oLack of financial support for entrepreneurs. These issues can be limited by introducing improved educational system
  • 5. What is the solution? Education ministry and vocational Training institutes join together and conduct special vocational training program. There are existing vocational training centers in the country to provide vocational training for the people who require it. Why your solution is so special? But, the problem is they are only targeting school leavers and teach them only the occupational related basic technical things. But this program will teach school students and leavers everything which is related to a particular industry.
  • 6. For example:- In carpentry module, student is taught How to manage your own business Easiest ways to find materials New technologies and trends Legal and safety aspects related to the industry. How to find financial aid How to go to top of the career hierarchy as a carpenter After taking the course module….. Practical skills Managerial skills Entrepreneur skills
  • 7. What is the main intention of making such a program? Most important thing is by this kind of program students can see how to reach into top level through varies occupations. So they have the motivation to do that sought of job .For an example a student who is good at or like to do carpentry, agriculture..etc will choose that area instead of trying to be doctor or engineer. This program will provide very much educated skilled workers who can achieve their dreams Improved Education system Education system  Vocational skills + proposed program  Management knowledge  Educational qualifications  Motivation and attitude Drop out from the system Vocational skills Management knowledge Educational Qualifications Motivation and attitude
  • 8. Primary level Grade 1-5 Industrial related Knowledge Secondary level Lectures conducted about Basics in every industrial field Grade 6-8 Vocational Training & practical will be held with the lectures. Students need to choose Grade 9-11 maximum of 3 modules considering their interest and evaluated by exams Collegiate level Grade 12-13 Special Courses are offered for those who drop out from the education system upon their request and qualifications for University level affordable prices 2 years after the students left vocational training centers , feedback forms are sent to their address to get information about current occupational status ,income and self satisfaction. Using these information success of the system is evaluated.

They need to pay the bond after age of 25. This money and government funds will be used to keep the system running. Loans will be provided for the Entrepreneurs with very low interests. It’s all about observing the existing system and optimizing it using available resources to get a better output…
  • 10. Procedure Identify the locations of the existing vocational training centers and reachable schools around them. Analyze the industrial background and current job market in the region to adjust the course content and modules accordingly with the help of specialists Establish a connection between the schools and the vocational training center by allocating the available personal resources and practical facilities and initiate the program Based on available funds and facilities the program is initiated with few vocational training centers and step by step this program can be spread throughout the country.
