Note: Replace all O-ring seals and gaskets. Apply a light film of hydraulic oil to all components
before assembly.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, clean all parts in cleaning fluid. Allow
the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited
on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use
new parts for replacement.
Note: The assembly procedure begins with the head. The assembly procedure for the body
follows.

1. Use Tooling (A) in order to install shuttle valve (28) .
2. Install plug (27) .
3. Assemble spool (23) , spring (24) , seat (25) , and cap (26) .

Improper assembly of parts that are spring loaded can cause bodily
injury.
To prevent possible injury, follow the established assembly procedure
and wear protective equipment.
4. Install valve assembly (22) .
5. Install the spool, the spring, the seat, and the cap on the other side of the head.
6. Assemble poppet (21) , spring (20) and valve assembly (19) .

8. Install the poppet, the spring, and the valve assembly on the other side of the head.
9. Assemble seat (17) , spring (16) , and cap (15) .

11. Install spool (13) , spacer (12) , and spring (11) .
12. Install cap (10) . Torque the cap to 250 N·m (185 lb ft).

13. Install piston (9) and plug (8) .
14. Install new O-ring seals (7) on both relief valves.
15. Install relief valves (6) . Torque each relief valve to 100 N·m (75 lb ft).

16. Install port plate (4) and pin (5) .
Note: Use grease in order to hold port plate (4) in position.
17. Use Tooling (F) and a soft hammer in order to install seal (35) .

Note: Raise the temperature of bearing (47) and bearing (49) . Lower the temperature of
shaft (46) .
18. Install bearing (48) onto shaft (46) .
Note: The preload for the bearings is adjusted at the factory. Install the bearings in sets.
19. Install shim (48) onto shaft (46) .
20. Install bearing (47) . Install shim (45) , and retaining ring (44) .

21. Install center pin (41) , pistons (40) and retainer (39) . Install screws (38) .
22. The following steps are necessary in order to select the thickness of shim (43) . The
thickness of the shim determines the lift-off limitation.
a. Use Tooling (G) in order to determine the limit of separation.

b. Install the three balls into the plate.
c. Install spring (42) and Tooling (G) into the center pin hole in barrel (37) .

d. Install Tooling (C) into barrel (37) .

e. Raise the housing to 80 °C (176 °F). Place the housing on suitable blocks.
f. Lower the rotary assembly into the housing. Install a new seal (29) .
g. Install shim (33) .

h. Use Tooling (E) in order to install retaining ring (34) .
Note: Use the recorded distance from the locknut to the end of the set screw for
installation purposes.
i. Install locknuts (31) and screws (32) .
j. Install head (3) on the housing. Turn the shaft and tighten bolts (2) at the same time.
k. Remove bolts (2) . Remove head (3) .

l. Remove Tooling (C) . Remove barrel (37) .
m. Remove Tooling (G) from barrel (37) .

n. Measure the thickness of Tooling (G) , Dimension (Z) . Subtract 0.3 ± 0.1 mm (.012
± .004 inch) from Dimension (Z) . Use a shim of this dimension in order to set the
correct lift off limitation.
Example (Z) = 5.00 mm (0.197 inch) - 0.3 ± 0.1 mm (.012 ± .004 inch) = 4.70 mm ±
0.10 (0.185 inch ± 0.004 inch).
o. Install shim (43) that was determined in Step 22.n into barrel (37) . Use a small
amount of grease in order to hold the shim in the barrel .
23. Install barrel (37) .

24. Install head (3) and bolts (2) . Tighten to a torque of 87 N·m (64.2 lb ft).
25. Install plug (1) .
End By: Install the travel motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Travel Motor - Install".

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service
Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the travel motor and the final drive.
2. Install Tooling (B) in the top hole in the final drive.
3. Attach a suitable lifting device to travel motor (6). The weight of travel motor (6) is
approximately 61 kg (135 lb).
4. Carefully position travel motor (6) on Tooling (B). Slide travel motor (6) into position on
the final drive.
5. Install bolt (8) in order to secure travel motor (6) to the final drive.
6. Remove Tooling (B) .
7. Install bolt (7). Remove the suitable lifting device.

8. Install hose assembly (4). Tighten hose assembly (4) to a torque of 76 ± 4 N·m (56 ± 3 lb
ft).
9. Install hose assemblies (5) .
10. Install Tooling (A) into the bolt hole for cover (3) .
11. Use two people to position cover (3) on Tooling (A). The weight of cover (3) is
approximately 45 kg (100 lb). Slide cover (3) into position on the machine.
12. Install bolts (2). Tighten bolts (2 ) to a torque of 130 ± 10 N·m (96 ± 7 lb ft).
13. Remove Tooling (A). Install bolt (1). Tighten bolt (1) to a torque of 130 ± 10 N·m (96 ± 7
lb ft).
14. Fill the final drive with oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Final Drive Oil -
Change".

Start By:
a. Remove the final drive. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive - Remove".
1. Thoroughly clean the outside of the final drive and travel motor prior to disassembly.
2. Remove bolts (2) that hold travel motor (1) to the final drive.

3. Fasten two suitable lifting straps and a suitable lifting device to travel motor (1). The weight
of travel motor (1) is approximately 54 kg (120 lb). Carefully remove travel motor (1) from
the final drive.
4. Remove O-ring seal (3) from the travel motor.

5. Fasten Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to the final drive, and turn the final drive on
the side. The weight of the final drive is 500 kg (1100 lb).
6. Remove plug (4).
NOTICE

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool

Cat products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
7. Drain the oil from the final drive into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to
Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)" for the capacity. Refer to
Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Final Drive Oil - Change" for the proper procedure.
8. Reinstall plug (4).

9. Position the final drive onto suitable blocking, as shown.
10. Remove the sprocket bolts (5) from final drive sprocket (6).
11. Use a suitable lifting device to remove final drive sprocket (6). If necessary, use a soft faced
hammer in order to unseat the sprocket.
12. The weight of the final drive sprocket is 91 kg (200 lb).

13. Remove bolts (7) that hold cover (8) in place.
14. Use Tooling (T) to elevate cover (8). This will allow enough clearance for your fingers in
order to lift cover (8) off the final drive.
15. Remove cover (8).
16. If necessary, remove the spacer (Not Shown) from cover (8).
17. Remove carrier assembly (9).
18. Disassemble carrier assembly (9), as follows:

a. Use Tooling (B) to remove retaining ring (10).
b. Use a soft faced hammer in order to remove planetary gear assembly (11).
Note: Rotate the planetary gear assembly so that the gear assembly comes off
perpendicular to the carrier shaft.
c. Disassemble planetary gear assembly (11), as follows.
