1. HOE GAAT HET EIGENLIJK MET
HET INTERNATIONALE REKEN- EN
WISKUNDEONDERWIJS??
Christian Bokhove

2. Wie ik ben
• Dr Christian Bokhove
• Van 1998-2012 wiskunde docent, Zaandam, Nederland
• Nationale projecten wiskunde en technologie, Universiteit Utrecht
• Gepromoveerd op ‘Use of ICT for acquiring, practicing and
assessing algebraic expertise’
• Associate Professor aan de University of
Southampton, United Kingdom
• Wiskunde-onderwijs
• Technologie
• Large-scale assessment (PISA/TIMSS)
• Onderzoeksmethoden
3. Inhoud
Een potpourri van onderwerpen
• Heb me deels laten leiden door eigen werk
• Internationaal perspectief: PISA en TIMSS
• Onbenoemde vaardigheid: leesvaardigheid
• De rol van curriculum
• Wat moet een basis zijn?
• Vaardigheden en inzicht gaan hand in hand
• Wat kan werken?
4. Wat zeggen internationale vergelijkingen?
• Veel beperkingen!
• Data verzameld zonder onderzoeksvraag
• Secundaire data analyse
• Maar: enige manier grootschalige, internationale
vergelijkingen.
• Beperkingen
plausible values, resampling
• Correlatie/causatie
5. Programme for International
Student Assessment (PISA)
• Door de Organisation for Economic Co-operation and
Development (OECD)
• 15-jarigen
• Leerlingen in scholen in landen (dus lastig om iets
over klassen te zeggen! Schoolfocus)
• 2000: Reading, 2003: Mathematics, 2006: Reading,
2009: Science, 2012: Mathematics, 2015: Science,
2018: Reading ← sinds vorige maand
• 70+ landen/jurisdicties
• http://www.oecd.org/pisa/
6. Trends in Mathematics and
Science Study (TIMSS)
• Door International Association for the Evaluation of Educational
Achievement (IEA)
• Wiskunde en Science grade 4 en 8 (Nederland helaas alleen
grade 4=groep 6).
PIRLS.
• 30+ landen/jurisdicties
• Eerste TIMSS in 95, meest recente 2015
• Leerlingen in 1 a 2 klassen in scholen in landen
• Curriculum en klaslokaal focus
• http://timss.bc.edu/
11. Misschien wel het grootste probleem
• Toetst PISA wel wiskunde?
• Rol van context
• Rol van taal
(‘Reading demand’)
• Aantal woorden
• Vocabulaire
• Symbolische taal
• Visualisaties
(Er zijn nog meer uitdagingen
waar ik niet op in ga)

13.
14.
15. • Heel laag ‘advanced’ maar hoog ‘low benchmark’.
Maar dalend.
• Content domains: ‘Data display’ hoger, ‘Number’
gemiddeld, ‘Geometric Shapes and Measures’ lager.
• Cognitive domains: ‘Knowing’ veel lager, ‘Applying’
gemiddeld, ‘Reasoning’ hoger.
oefenen.
• Maar let wel: ‘‘Paradox of the Asian learner’’ (Biggs 1994,
Meerjarig, gender, onderwerpen, type vragen
16. Verschil vragen
TIMSS (Rindermann, 2007).
• TIMSS meer curriculum georienteerd. (Rindermann &
Baumeister, 2015)
• TIMSS-PIRLS relationship report: slechtere lezers deden
18. Rol curriculum
• Beoogd
• Geimplementeerd
• Behaald
• TIMSS heeft een
curriculum focus
Curriculum van belang
19. Which of these is the reason
that triangle PQR is a right
angle triangle?
A. 32 + 42 = 52
B. 5 < 3 + 4
C. 3 + 4 = 12 – 5
D. 3 > 5 – 4
Hangt ook van vraag en curriculum af
20. Instructietijd
learn’ tav grade 8 TIMSS
meetkunde uitkomsten.
• Niet altijd ‘meer tijd is
beter’ (bv Japan).
• Maar onzichtbare factor
is ‘bijles’.
21. Siegler: wat voorspelt wiskundeprestatie?
“Analyses of large, nationally representative, longitudinal
data sets from the United States and the United Kingdom
revealed that elementary school students’ knowledge of
fractions and of division uniquely predicts those students’
knowledge of algebra and overall mathematics
achievement in high school, 5 or 6 years later, even after
statistically controlling for other types of mathematical
knowledge, general intellectual ability, working memory,
and family income and education.” Siegler et al. (2012)
Het belang van een goede basis
22. Onderzoek getallen en operaties
• Grootte van getallen
• Grotere getallen=moeilijker
• ‘Mooie getallen’ en compensatiestrategie
• Rol van ‘gelijk’ teken (bv McNeil & Alibali, 2005, McNeil et
al., 2019)
• Operationeel
• Relationeel
• Substitutie
Oefenen belangrijk, maar
oefening moet varieren
23. Breuken: discreet versus continu
wiskundeboeken in verschillende landen breuken
aanbieden
26. Ook belangrijk: algoritmes
• Fan & Bokhove (2014)
• (Standaard-)algoritmes vaak negatief daglicht: regels,
laag niveau, geen inzicht
• Dahlin and Watkins (2000), link memorization and
understanding door ‘‘repetition’’.
• Meaningful repetition can ‘‘create a deep impression’’
which leads to memorization, and it can also lead to
‘‘discovering new meaning’’ which in turn leads to
understanding (Li, 1999).
Algoritmes zijn niet alleen ‘rote’
29. Rohrer et al. (2019)
• Leren van wiskunde
• Grote steekproef
• ‘Blocked’ versus ‘Interleaved’ (spaced, retrieval)
continu, algoritmes.
• Vaardigheden en inzicht gaan hand in hand. Stop met
valse tegenstellingen.
