red academy
Red Academy is a new digital media and
technology academy in Vancouver that was
created for the web designers, digital
creators, developers and digital marketers
of tomorrow.
3. Focused on creating an engaging, interactive
experience with a curated community of
changemakers to learn about the urban
revitalization efforts in Downtown Las Vegas
and invite discussion on education with the
theme of “Preparing Human Capital for the
Future of Digital.”
the intention
4. CatalystCreativ brought 32 changemakers interested in the topic of
new business models to enjoy a 4-day immersive event to “live as a
local” in DTLV.
Wednesday night brought our group of attendees together for an
introductory dinner at Place on Seventh, where attendees got to
recount stories of the first piece of technology they marveled at.
The weekend continued with small business spotlights at Grassroots
Juice Bar, Digital Royalty, The Writer’s Block Bookstore, and Teach for
America, as well as attendee-led workshops on Finding Intrinsic
Motivation and Educational Analytics & Networking.
Educational and vulnerable storytelling during our Speaker Showcases
invited the public to learn about how to foster creativity, diversity, and
success in tech teams, how Red Academy hopes to transform
education, how reading can be a fun habit, and how taking education
outside the classroom to form inspirational events founded
CatalystCreativ.
the event
5. objectives & results
1 Introduce CatalystCreativ
• CatalystCreativ Communications & Events Manager, Evelyn welcomed Catalyst Week attendees to Downtown Las Vegas
together and set the intention from day one to forget themselves as visitors and “live as locals” during their stay.
• Evelyn facilitated an icebreaker by asking the group to respond to question that brought them back to childhood: “What was
the first piece of technology you marveled at as a child?” Responses like the Polaroid camera, an angry VHS tape, the
Nintendo game system, and the track loader operated by an attendee’s father let attendees laugh over stories of recently
antiquated technologies.
• Robert & Evelyn kicked off Thursday’s programming with a Q&A at the Catalyst Crashpad to give insight into the story of
CatalystCreativ’s & Downtown Project’s humble beginnings in the neighborhood.
• CEO Amanda Slavin wrapped up 2.5 years of Catalyst & Creativ Weeks in an emotional talk during Friday night’s speaker
showcase.
2 Introduce Red Academy
• During the Welcome Session, Colin Mansell, Managing Partner at RED, welcomed attendees to downtown Las Vegas, gave
background on Red Academy and thanked attendees for their participation in the week.
• Aimee Chung, Academic Program Manager at RED, shared a story on her experience with a particularly engaged group of
students and how remaining open and flexible as an instructor can help foster the best in students.
• Katie Jeanes, a recent addition to the RED family, shared lighthearted anecdotes about her journey from neuroscience to
the startup world and how she found passion for online education.
• Colin Mansell and Matt Parsons closed Friday evening’s showcase with a joint presentation on RED’s ambitious and
dedicated mission to redefine education.
