The leader of the National Family Farm Coalition, Bill Cristison states, " There needs to be a far

Having considered the potential impacts Monsanto's GM crops contain on biodiversity, the company
also diminishes aspects of food sovereignty due to the issues that modified organisms pose on

allow for this because there are potential impacts that transgenic crops may cause a resistance to

1. Which guest speaker hosted in class this semester had the greatest impact on you? What did you
learn from him/her and how might it affect your future? The topic that had the greatest impact on
me is about food security by professor Michelson. In the lecture, we discussed the importance of
food security, the trends of rising global food demand, factors that drives the expected demand
increase, and also the relationship between income and food. The first question she came up with is
why food security became such a major challenge worldwide? In my point of view, one of the
simple reason is that everybody needs food. By answering this question, she introduced the
definition of food security, and three hierarchical pillars. I learned that population growth, climate
change, and water scarcity are some of the factor that cause food security became a problem. Also,
as people become more affluent they start to change their tastes. For example, meat consumption in
both developed and developing countries predict to increase while their income rise. Then we
analyzed couple graph and table. In the over–nourishment map, we found out that Europe, North
America and Oceania seems waste the most food. In the map of meat demand driver, I learned that
since two–third of meat Chinese consume is pork, China actually consumes more total meat calories
than US. Last but not least, professor Michelson introduced Engel's law and Bennett's law. Engel's
law stated that as income increase, the portion of income spent on food falls, but the amount of
money that expend on food might increase. Bennett's law stated that as income rises, the portion of

average individual has an intake calories below 1690–1930 kcal per day, he or she is

When focusing on a major topic like genetically modified organisms from an economic standpoint,
it is crucial to cover the varying effects of large agribusiness companies that run the
biotechnological field, primarily Monsanto. Monsanto, originally founded as a chemical company,
has risen to hold a biotechnical science monopoly. While a monopoly is never a good thing, the
issues with Monsanto are much larger than that. How exactly do Monsanto and its fellow
biotechnology companies cause damage to everything they interfere with? From the death,
destruction, and deformation of Vietnam to financial damage to local farmers, from the dangerous
chemicals placed in their crops to the false advertising of their company, Monsanto and its cohorts
may be the root of all problems and negative aspects related to genetically modified organisms.
Monsanto and many other large agribusiness companies claim to be solving world hunger. This is a
false advertisement. Only about 20% of global food production comes from large factory farms,

The Hutu and the Tutsi have a violent history dating back to 1959 when the Hutus overthrew the
Tutsi king appointed by the Belgian colonizers. Thousands of Tutsi were killed and over a hundred

With the unemployment rate that high, it is almost going to be impossible to live in Mexico if the
population keeps increasing. The last characteristic that makes Mexico a developing country is the
dependence and vulnerability in internal relations. The increasing problem of the Mexican drug
cartels has made Mexico even worse of a place to live. Many innocent people die each year because
of the violence that the rival cartels generate. Many young kids are starting to join these cartels
because there are no jobs in Mexico and the only way of getting money is through joining these
cartels. Mexico is now depending, in some way, on the U.S to help them with the illegal sales of fire
arms and explosive to the drug cartels in Mexico. The U.S came up with a plan called Operation
Fast and Furious which would track down the buyers and eventually lead to the leaders of the
cartels. This operation ended in January 2011 with the 34 drug cartel suspects.
Although Mexico has all of these factors against them in order for develop to occur, they do have
the ability to grow. The only change they need to do is change the whole government, which is the

Agriculture is a vital part of society, and Agribusiness is of course the business behind it. While
agricultural needs were different in ancient times, farming was always necessary. With agriculture
came the domestication of plants and animals. This domestication allowed the human civilization to
flourish. With time, new technologies and lifestyles changed the course of agriculture.
According to the USDA Census of Agriculture, aging farmers and ranchers, whose average age has
risen from 52 to 57 during the last 20 years, are often retiring without a younger family member
willing to take over (2007). With the loss of multi–generation ranches comes the rise of
corporations. This ultimately leads to greater employment rates. The Bureau of Labor Statistics
states that nearly 60,000 skilled agricultural job openings are expected annually in the U.S., yet only
35,000 graduates will be available to fill them (2012). Agricultural managers should find more
opportunities this way. Owners of large lots of land, who aren't often living on the property, will
begin to pursue an agricultural manager's expertise to run their farms as businesses. The decline in
farmers, and the increase in large operations can reap many benefits for graduates looking to emerge
themselves in an agricultural career.
