This document provides themes that can be analyzed for a homework assignment on Homer's Odyssey, including about Odysseus: nostos, hubris, responsibility, shame, pining, storytelling, lying, revisiting mistakes, the magical feminine, and descent into the unknown. Themes about Telemachus include: search for autonomy, shame, inadequacy, frustration, severance from the feminine, and outward journey. Students are asked to write a one to two page reflective paper choosing one theme and discussing its meaning in the story.
