Daredevil Skiing
Have you ever landed on a runway in the middle of the French Alps? How about flying directly over
the heads of beachgoers just before you land? You might want to take a trip to see at least one of
them if you get the chance. You could even take an epic journey and visit several of them in one trip.
Just pack your bags and head over to SeaTac Airport for the adventure of a lifetime. Before you drop
your car off at Aeroparking for safekeeping, take a look at a few of some of the strangest airports in
the world.
Courchevel, France
If daredevil skiing is your idea of a perfect activity when you're traveling, then you'll probably enjoy
landing at the ski resort in Courchevel. This incredible airport runway looks just like a ski run, and it

In order to land at the airport, you must first fly directly over the heads of people on the beach.
Because of the position of the runway, you could be close enough to the ground to see what the
beachgoers are wearing. The tourists don't usually seem to mind, but the sound of the landing planes
can be somewhat deafening.
Barra, Scotland
Forget flying over the shoreline – how about landing right on the beach instead? That's what you'll
do if you fly to this Scottish island. Planes have been landing there since the 1930s. Although the
runways are not paved, they accommodate over 1,000 flights annually.
Gibraltar
The airport in this British territory between Spain and Morocco has, perhaps, one of the weirdest
runways on the planet. It is intersected by the busiest road in Gibraltar. Amazingly, the airport and
the town are able to use the space in harmony.
Exploring some of the world's strangest airports can be fun, but you'll probably be glad to return to
SeaTac! After a hair–raising landing or two, you might develop a whole new level of appreciation
for SeaTac Airport. Another detail you can appreciate: Your car will be safe at Aeroparking while
you're

The Biomechanics Of A Skiing
For this research assignment, the topic I would like to discuss is the biomechanics of a skiing.
Skiing is one type of sports that has begun to increase in popularity. Athletes are always trying to
discover ways to get stronger, faster, and higher with minimal injuries. Improving our biomechanics
is one important way of improving your athletic performance, and limit injuries. However, there are
many pros and cons within the biomechanics of skiing. I would like to learn more about leg
alignment and form and how these can affect the skier. Abnormalities of the leg and lower–leg
alignment are important factors while skiing. To be an efficient skier it requires a balanced
movement. My methods of data collection to analyze my subject 's skill movement will consist of a
multi–methods approach. This approach includes a mixture of literature reviews, observational
review through video analysis, and interviews with the athlete. These data collection methods will
help me in my project by allowing me to strategically point out differences in angular placement and
posture, along with speed variations due to changes in position. I will be able to compare a
professional style of skiing with that of a novice skier and point out the differences in positioning
between an experienced skier and a novice skier. I will limit research information to scholarly and
reputable sources only. Once of the sources I will reference comes from a research article called
Clinical Biomechanics of Skiing.

Skiing: Getting Started
Skiing. Getting Started
By Bobby Buys
Oct 15, 2012
How many times have you enviously watched those skiers gliding down snow covered slopes,
perfectly balanced and having the time of their lives? They make it seem effortless but in truth,
every one of those seeming experts had to start from the basics.
Let's take a look at what you need to get started with skiing. Before you rush out and book that
skiing holiday, the best advice is to take professional skiing lessons. Whether you've done some
basic skiing before or you are a complete beginner, a professional ski instructor will get you started
and help you avoid the wrong techniques right from the beginning.
How do you pick a good instructor? Do your homework and consider the following factors, ... Show

For a beginner it is better to hire your ski equipment until you gain more experience, but sooner or
later you will want to acquire your own gear.
Basically you will need three layers of equipment to keep you warm and safe. The first layer should
consist of thermal underwear and ski socks, to transfer moisture away from your body. The second
layer provides padding and more insulation and includes your ski boots. Finally complete your gear
with head protection, such as a helmet or beanie, ski goggles, gloves and a good quality waterproof
jacket.
Of course you will need skis, these should be matched to your boots and bindings to make sure that
your skis remain connected to your feet. Match your skis to the type of skiing you intend to pursue,
downhill skiing or cross–country skiing, for example.
In South Africa the main skiing area is located at Tiffindell, in the Southern Drakensberg. It is a
relatively high ski resort at over 2,800 meters. Just over the border in Lesotho is Afri–Ski, which has
a one–kilometre slope open during the months of June to August.
Skiing is a world–wide sport, with resorts in many countries. Your new interest can add an exciting,
fun dimension to your travels.

Heli Skiing Research Paper
What is Heli–skiing?
By Pete Malcolm
Aug 24, 2012
Imagine yourself being ferried by one of those gondolas at a ski resort. You see slopes that look like
totally awesome places to ski. You ask the guide whether you'll be skiing there and he curtly replies
"No," and he points you in the other direction where you see natural scenery with a variety of
landscapes. "That's where you'll be skiing." So what is heli–skiing? It's getting on a helicopter and
then going to that radical wilderness site to ski. No rules, no artificial snow blowers and nobody to
tell you what you can or you can't do. It's about finding that extreme location via a chopper, getting
dropped off and totally going for it.
There are two types of heli–skiing, the US/Canadian model and the European model. The
US/Canadian model is pretty much like your normal routine skiing venue, except that your site is
way off limits and practically unfettered by human existence and you get to be brought by the
chopper again and again to your starting point. The chopper is acting like your normal ski–lift.
The European model is similar though much more exhausting because of the length of travel that
you have to make. The chopper drops you down on your starting point and then you proceed to meet
it at the end of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The foremost reason is that it's possibility not safe. Why? Because the locations you are brought into
are usually remote. Just imagine how difficult it would be to retrieve or rescue people if a mishap
occurs. This is also the reason why most of these excursions also come with the requisite guide. The
guide is not just your friendly advisor, the guide is the one who will point out the best route for you
once you disembark from the chopper. Their designation as guides is brought about by their
familiarity with the terrain and most of all, their professional certification from the International
Federation of Mountain Guide

College Essay On Nordic Skiing
An interest, a hobby, or a lifestyle? Nordic skiing has put many tolls on my life. Through hard work
and dedication; I have put myself in a position where not only would my application be incomplete
without mentioning skiing, but my life would be unthinkable without it. To be a successful skier,
there are many obstacles a person must overcome. Which all include an unimaginable prize to be
won.
Nordic skiing, also known as cross country skiing, has popularized over the previous decades. This
sport involves several muscles working together to achieve the fastest speed while maintaining the
speed for the entire race. This sport is very difficult and requires full commitment to be successful.
My background behind Nordic skiing is fairly simple. At the age of four, I was put on my first pair
of nordic skis. My family does not have any relations to cross country skiing, besides touring
around. At age six, I was signed up for my first race. I vaguely remember my first races as a child. I
spent my childhood racing for a club team (Polar Bear Ski Club) and enjoyed racing in the Bill
Koch (Olympian, 1976) League. I adored the sport and kept with it throughout my childhood ...

Throughout my five years continuing on my sixth; I had never became so close to any sport/club
offered at my school. Our team is considered a "family." We stand by eachother through times of
doubt and reminisce on our good memories. We enjoy the company of one another. Every Friday
night before our Saturday morning races, the team would all sit down together and have a nice meal
together. The team is a close knit group even with students joining and graduating from the

Personal Narrative: The Joy Of Skiing
Have you ever skied down snow–covered slopes? Ever felt the rush of cold air in your face? If you
have, you would understand the exhilaration and thrill of skiing. No matter how many times I slide
down glistening white mountainsides I will never lose that feeling of joy and a little hint of fear.
Scrolling through videos, I am filled with nostalgia. Never will that feeling wash away. I always
enjoy looking back at little me, so inexperienced while learning to ski, because it shows me how I've
learned, how I've grown, opportunities my family has given me, and how I've succeeded.
Skiing is not just about sliding down hillsides. It's about learning and achieving. As the child
tumbles down the hillside, she learns a very valuable lesson, look at where you're going not where
you are. That little girl was once me. Back then, I had only thought of it as a lesson for skiing, but it
is also a lesson for life. Skiing may teach you how to keep your balance and use flexibility to your
advantage, but it also teaches you to rely on others including my instructors and parents. ... Show

A long, steep, and white snow covered mountain, or a black diamond, sounds very fun to most
skiers. Skiing is hard to do at first but once one gets the hang of it, it becomes a fun and exciting
experience. My first time skiing a black diamond was a terrifying and exciting experience, and in
the end I conquered my fear of skiing down steep slopes.
I snapped back to reality as I wolfed down the last of my tasty hotdog, dreading what was next on
the agenda. My family and I had been having a blast at the sugar bowl ski resort in Donner, and we
had just finished up our lunch break. We are all pretty good skiers, however me being the youngest,
I was the least experienced in my family. I had never Skied down a black diamond, and I didn't want
to.
"Hey bud are you ready to Ski the black diamond?" my father said as we started to move. My dad
was probably the most experienced skier in my family.
"Yeah, I guess," I replied. But I wasn't. I didn't want to ski it at all as we slowly trotted over to the
skies in our large metal boots.
"Now remember you don't have to do this if you don't want to." My father said. "But I highly
encourage that you do." I just nodded silently.
As I sat down to put on my ski boots, I glanced up at the mountain that we were about to ski. It
looked menacing. It was almost as if I was looking up at my impending doom, if I were to choose to
go. I then imagined myself on it. I imagined catapulting down the mountain, on my stomach with a
large trail of snow

Personal Narrative-Year Skiing
It was a chilly Sunday afternoon with blue skies and all the makings for a good day of early season
skiing on that fateful November afternoon. The day was winding down, the Broncos had just kicked
off, and my friends and I had just leapt off the chairlift to embark on our last run of the day. All was
well on the way down, a blur of orange jerseys rushing by as I sped down the mountain making the
most of the last run of my day. Upon our final few turns of the afternoon, I found myself in a
predicament that would later shape me into the person I am today. An exposed rock, due to the
minimal snow conditions of early season skiing, clashed with my skis sending me flying out of my
bindings head first into the snow. My natural instinct was to put my hands out to protect my fall, big
mistake. The pressure put on my right thumb, due to the immense force of the fall, sent pain
shrieking through my body. I knew something was wrong immediately, but I neglected to say
anything was seriously wrong with me. After many x–rays and doctor's visits the doctor was able to
determine, I had a complete tear of my Ulnar Collateral Ligament in my thumb as well as bone
fragment scattered around the cavity of my thumb. Surgery was 100 percent necessary to repair the
damage done and the time table for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

As I pick up speed I feel the wind push harder and harder in the opposite direction, but my jacket
breaks its bite. The reflection of the sun on the stark white snow makes the path ahead harder to see;
my destination is still visible, its dead ahead. As I close in I have second thoughts but it's too late for
that now. I lean forward to ride my edge and make a quick turn as I launch off of the jump which
sends me into a spin until I'm facing my original direction, 360 degrees then my snowboard touches
the ground again and I land it. Well, at least I planned on landing it. However, the reality of the
situation was different, I ended up hitting the hard snow with my head and shoulder. That happened
on my most recent skiing/snowboarding trip. I've been skiing for as long as I can remember but the
past few trips I have snowboarded instead. Skiing and snowboarding are some of the things that I'm
most passionate about, but the most important part is doing those things with my family and friends.

Throughout my life, I have been on quite the number of ski/snowboard trips and even though a lot
of them have been in the same place it never gets old. I'd tell you about my first time going but I was
only two years old so I don't remember, I guess you will have to be satisfied with the story of
another time. Last December, I remember the long packing process and the boring drive to the hotel.
My aunt and uncle along with my friend, Austin and my sister, Abby were in the vehicle with me.
You could say the route to Hood River is somewhat scenic, but after traveling it countless time I
couldn't help falling asleep for parts of it. While I wasn't asleep I was busy chatting with everyone in
the vehicle which makes it feel shorter but it could never be short enough, I was already excited.
When we finally arrived at our hotel, Hood River Inn, it was late. I immediately notice a difference
in temperature when I get out of the vehicle, but it's okay, I love the cold. Then we begin to take in
our luggage. Once we were checked in and settled, Austin and I headed for the pool. We saw that it
was crowded so we just decided to go for a walk instead, on our walk we spotted another one of

Tree Hugger Scrrrrrrr came the satisfying sound of my skis digging into the snow. "Wait up, Mara!"
my dad called, a little ways up the mountain with my best friend Sierra and her dad. "Can I go up

of air in a long sigh making puffs of fog in the frosty air. "Go ahead, little trooper," he finally said,
reaching a decision. "But make sure to wait for us at the bottom, okay honey?" "Oh yeah!" I
cheered, starting down the slopes. I was only in kindergarten, but I already knew that skiing was
going to be one of my favorite sports. I liked every bit of it, how the fresh mountains and the green
trees whiz past as you shred the slopes, and how great it feels to be at the top of the mountain, the
sky seeming so close you could touch it. And not to mention the feeling of joy and accomplishment
you get when you are at the bottom, staring at the run you had just tackled. I wasn't born a good
skier though, nobody is and that's the sheer truth of it. As a five or six year old, I was on a beginning
slope called Discovery Chair in Mammoth, but to me, it felt like a major accomplishment. After I
got the okay from dad, I wasted no time going as fast as I could, carving my turns like how a

mountain, getting farther and farther away from my dad, Sierra, and Sierra's dad. My speed was

Physics Of Skiing Physics
Physics is a very important aspect to how the world functions. It is also vital to understanding
skiing. Skiing is the act of traveling on top of snow on long blades called skis that are attached to the
feet. There are many different types of skiing such as alpine skiing, nordic skiing, ski jumping, and
aerial skiing. Each of these are unique in their own way when it comes to how it is impacted by
physics.
The most common type of skiing is downhill skiing, or otherwise known as alpine skiing. The skier
must be very agile and be able to make quick turns while going at fast speed. In order to do this they
must obtain momentum by turning potential energy into kinetic energy. This is a relationship
between work and energy. The person begins at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The normal force is the force of the ground on the skis. It is opposite in direction of the force of

skier's movement. It is a fancy name for what was mentioned in the previous paragraph about
friction between the skis and snow. Lastly, the drag force is the air resistance acting in the opposite
direction of the skier's movement. Again, this was stated in the prior paragraph. The forces explain

This part of the run is not difficult for me, which is good because my mind is already focused on the
cliff that I know is about 100 feet down the ridge and 50 feet on my left (north). Waiting for my turn

adrenaline, making my body feel numb. I ski to my spot above the cliff, and the iconic House Rock
looks like it always does, almost like a fifty foot diving board that will shoot you out half–way down
the rest of the mountain. I stop right above the point of no return. I must choose to hit the cliff or
not. There is no turning back once I move from this spot. One of the most important lessons I have
learned from skiing is that I am most successful when I fully commit. As I got older and started
doing more intense tricks and bigger cliffs, I started to see a trend. Whenever I dropped into a jump,

Personal Narrative: Snow Skiing
Snow skiing. The first day learning to ski is rough for almost anyone you ask. The day before my

answers to. I had built up such intense feelings of nervousness and excitement that I could hardly
tell the difference. All I wanted was to make it out alive.
I was 12. I had heard the stories from my Uncle Randy about ski trips, but I wanted to try it for
myself. He finally decided I was old enough to tag along. The two and a half hour car ride felt like a

shining bright. The temperature was in the mid to lower 30's, which was perfect for skiing. When we
got to the locker room, I started putting on all my gear. Excitement filled the air as other skiers
geared up to take on the slopes. When I finally got my rental boots tight and buckled up, my uncle

Descriptive Essay On Skiing
For my entire life as I knew it, I had been skiing. Ever since I was a little, chubby four–year old,
tumbling right off the magic carpet like a glove in the dryer every time it shuddered even just the
slightest bit, I'd been on skis. And I was more than satisfied with that. It was the same every
Saturday afternoon during winter: my mom would spend almost an hour smothering me in layers
upon layers of fleece, coaxing my pudgy legs into my snow pants, and tugging at me and attempting
in vain to force my feet into my hand–sized ski boots, haul after heave, until I was finally ready to
hit the snow. And then I would realize I had to go to the bathroom. Eventually, I think it got
remotely easier as I learned how to do it myself, although I absolutely despised putting on my boots
myself and the suffocating heat of one too many layers, as hot as the elementary school classrooms
that year when all the air conditioners decided it would be a good idea to stop working in June.
Other than this frustration, I loved skiing with all my heart. It was the kind of excitement where my
hand would shoot up in class to tell all my teachers that my favorite activity was skiing, even if it
was the middle of summer. The kind where I would wait through all the other seasons, just to finally
reach winter. Stopping or switching to snowboarding had never even tiptoed into my mind. After all,
why would I want to be like one of those obnoxious snowboarders sitting smack in the middle of the
path? The adrenaline as I swerved full speed down a powdery slope was what I lived for. Nothing
compared to feeling of being so carefree and blithe, slicing through the air like a golden eagle. But I
never truly realized how many types of birds there could be– at least until I saw her.
It was just another Saturday afternoon, but instead of my family taking their usual places in line, my
friends took their spots. As our lives settled to move on without us, my brother would stay at home
to do homework, my dad would stay with him, and my mom still brought me just like before, only
she now sat in the lounge working on her unfair laptop instead of accompanying me on the
mountains. They all grew up a little more, so I tried to, too. And even though I missed

I mentally started to freak out, and i looked for an exit route, there was only one other one besides
going down the hill: this hill was connected to the smaller hill. I told my dad I'm going to go to the
other hill. He gave me a stern look, and he went down the hill alone. I noticed i might crash if I sled
down to the slope shortcut to the other hill, so I took off the base of my skis and left the boot
attachments on my boots. One small step at a time, I slowly climbed down the shortcut. It was so
irritating and annoying I wondered if this was the best alternative rather than risking it and going
down the hill. When I finally got down the hill I thoroughly decided to stick with that one hill. So I
kept on enjoying the fast but not fastest speed. Lunch came and I went inside the center and got a
bite to eat. Isaac got pizza, and I got some aswell. The pizza didn't taste that good, and I could tell it
was very cheaply made, and I questioned why one slice was SO expensive. After we ate lunch and
became reorganized, I went back to the hills and went down them a few more times. But then, the
accident happened. As I was being hoisted up by the pulley machine everything seemed normal, but
when i got to the top of the hill, I noticed I was slipping as I let go of the pulley. I tried to keep my
balance, but that only made it worse, the base of my skis interlocked. The head of one ski clasped
onto the back of my other ski, twisting my foot backwards in a frightening and unnatural position.
The pain was immense and very sharp. I quickly looked at what caused the pain and I saw it. I
panicked, and because of the intense pain, I screamed for my dad, who was a couple feet away from
me, saw what was wrong, because I usually don't scream in pain like that. In a few seconds, he saw
the problem and rush to unlock the base of my skis. He struggles with but eventually unlocks it, and

My Experience Of School Skiing
It was February sixteenth, I was in sixth grade and I had gotten a flyer for the annual school ski trip.
More excited than ever I took it home and put it on the fridge so my mom and dad would see it
when they got home from work. Twenty minutes after they got home they hadn't said anything, so I
casually took it off the fridge and placed it on the couch between my parents in the back room. My
mom looked at me with a tired sigh and asked what is was. I happily told her that it was an
application form for a school field trip coming up! She signed the form and stated that we'd be
renting skis from Barrie's Extreme Sports Store. I was surprised that this wasn't a bigger deal! I had
never been skiing before and it was clearly something that needed way more attention! It was very

That's when my brother, Lance, walked in. "What are we talking about," Lance began, "Are we

How To Get Back To Skiing
Last spring my cousins came skiing with us. They also came the spring before that and we had a
bunch of fun. But what we did on this trip was the craziest thing I have ever done. The first day we
got to our house and unpacked everything and made some dinner. Buzz buzz the alarm clock went
of. The next day our cousins came and we went skiing and ate dinner at the tap house. When we got
to the mountain the next morning I heard someone talking about a moose sighting on the mountain.I
was scared to death when I heard that. After we ate lunch I stopped thinking about the moose. But
little did I know that I would would encounter that moose and learn a lesson that will stay with me
for my whole life. I was ready to get back to skiing so my cousin

Persuasive Essay About Skiing
You look out across the mountains, taking in the amazing sunset as it reflects off the snow. You are
filled with adrenaline and excitement, but you are also relaxed, mind free of any worries. Then you
take off, flying down the mountain, and its just you and the slope. And when you get to the bottom,
you get back on the lift, ready to do it all again. That's what skiing is like for me, and I hope to
convince all of you to attempt to find that same state of euphoria. There are a multitude of reasons to
try skiing, including an endless list of physical and mental health benefits. Skiing is both a strength
and cardio workout. It gets your heart rate up and is physically demanding, challenging your body to

The "balance and coordination" that skiing requires enhances your ability to be conscious of your
body movements (Eaton). Your spatial awareness decreases with age, so training these skills is
important so that they will "diminish" less (Eaton). Skiing is a good way to accomplish this, as in a
study done in 2004, there was found to be a significant link between proprioception and skiing
(Malliou). In addition, skiing is better for your overall happiness. A study done at Yonsei University
in South Korea showed that those who were engaged in skiing showed an increased level of
pleasure. They also noted that a "sporting activity," such as skiing, had "positive psychological
outcomes", increasing overall mental health and "general quality of life" (Lee). Us college students
have to deal with large amounts of stress, conflict, and some of us even deal with anxiety and
depression. Skiing is a great way to help improve your mental health, while also gaining physical
benefits. There is also more to skiing than the tangible mental and physical benefits. Skiing is an

Descriptive Essay About Skiing
Ever since I can just about remember i have been skiing. It started off at a ski resort by the city I
grew up in, they were just little hills and they only took a minute to get down. But that's where it all
started those little hills. My friends and I would go there almost every weekend during the winter to
go off the jumps and race down the slopes. As much as I loved going down those hills they will
never compare to the mountains of colorado. I was about 15 years old when we first went to
colorado on my first skiing trip and i have to say i was really excited about it. Not only that, but my
friends were coming along so that made it way better. There were gonna be 15 of us in total, 3 being
my close friends Jared, Luke, and Connor. The others of the group were family friends, our parents,
my cousin jodi, my older sibling Nick and my younger pest of a sibling Joe. Twas the night before
we were going to leave for colorado and we already hit a rough patch in our long journey. I had
caught some sort of stomach flu that had me in the bathroom all night. I don't really even know it
that was it, all i know is that i couldn't stand up straight. I had to keep myself hunched over the
whole time or else it would feel like someone was twisting a knife in my gut. Regardless it wasn't
any fun and i was worried that i wasn't going to be able to go on the skiing trip with everyone. When
i woke up the next morning i still felt stabbing pain in my stomach but i wasn't feeling nauseous

Types of Skiing Downhill Skiing      In Downhill skiing,
competitors take a "set course from start to finish." They take turns racing and each run is timed.
The person with the fastest time wins. Downhill racers use ski poles to pick up speed at the start and
for balance when they take turns. They try to keep there skis as close as possible to the snow. As he
leaves the starting gate he activates an automatic timing mechanism. Downhill racing is the fastest

The Last Day Of Skiing
As thin air encloses me as I inaugurate the last day of skiing at Breckenridge, Colorado. Three days
of skiing cease rather painlessly; I stumble oftenly but an evening on the couch next to a crackling
wood fire soothes my minor aches. Closing times nudges on the final day of our weekend trip as I
prepare for my ultimate run of the vacation. Fresh off the ski lift, I glide towards the junction of the
trials unoccupied skilled face of the mountain. I detach my boots from my ski's and rest them on my
shoulder, climbing up the rim of the mountain while the wind sways me back and forth, reaching the
top, clicking my skis back on. After a moment of deliberating, I fearlessly select a narrow path so
steep that the only way can be seen from my viewpoint.
All alone, I glance downhill and advance towards a dangerous region on the mountain. Suddenly,
my legs chatter violently, as my skis scrape against the frozen patches that disperse the area.
"I already knew that the trail will be empty for quite awhile," I said.
After overcompensating from the fall. I take my left glove off and inspect what damage has this
done to me, the heavy drift blows my glove away from me.
"Noooo, no," I said.
I stand up and detach my right ski, then scramble the icy slope that flanks the trail in search for my

feeling as though I was a speed skater with skis on instead of skates. I "gritted my teeth", as my
coach would say and survived the gate. Quickly, the next gate approached a seemingly simple
combination gate, but clipping the gate I fell flat on my chest as though I was a kid belly smacking

never would want fear to come between me and finishing. I would have let myself and my team

Skiing Industry Animals
Mark C.J. Stoddart conducted a study about animals' presence in skiing industry in his article,
"Grizzlies and Gondolas: Animals and the Meaning of Skiing Landscapes in British Columbia,
Canada." When people think of skiing, most of them probably picture snow–covered nature,
especially mountains and forest; however, that public perception has been overlooked one thing:
"animals are also present" as the part of nature (Stoddart, 2011). The subject of this article is to
examine three ways in which animals present in skiing world: animals as symbols of nature in the
skiing business, environmentalists' concern about endangered animals as a consequence of
expansion of industry, and interactive interviews with encounters. He selected discourse analysis,
field observation, and in–person interview for review and analysis (Stoddart, 2011). Stoddart found
that a large number of resorts and hotels in British Columbia, Canada used animals as their mascots.
Most of them were bears, placing them in front of entrances and websites of their facilities to "link

birds, caribou and other animals also shape skiers' experience of mountainous nature" (Stoddart,

Skiing Do you like to downhill ski? Who doesn't like a little rush of adrenaline? It feels good!
Skiing is a worldwide sport and pastime, but how much do you really know about it? My subtopics
include: the history of skiing, who skied first, and the best places to ski. Journey into the whipping
wind and flying snow to find out how and why skiing really started! Many people say that skiing
originally originated in the Atlay mountains in 8000 BC. Some say it didn't start until much later in
that region (National Geographic). The skis are very different than today's, they are closer to eight
feet long and made of wood, fur, and horse hair. They had one pole to keep their balance, not two.
The skis varied in size over the years, the largest being a huge twelve feet long and the smallest
being about two and a half feet long. The people from older times used the skis to travel faster on
snow to catch animals by catching up to them. They have greatly changed from a hunting tactic to a

We started going up to Beaver Mountain just like any other normal Saturday when we go skiing. But

Skiing Is A Way Of Survival
As you stand at the top of a run and look down over the mountain; with twisting and turning slopes,
you feel at peace and connected with nature. This is what skiing can do for you; however, it hasn't
always been a way to get out and enjoy the mountain air. As a matter of fact, skiing used to be
mainly for survival.
Scientists have found rock art drawn by ancient civilizations in 8000 B.C. that depict people skiing.
Back in those days, it was the Scandinavians, Russians, and Altay Mountain folk that were using
some form of skis to travel vast distances and hunt; thus skiing was a way of survival. It wasn't until
about the 1860's that Americans in Sierra Nevada started to use skis to race and have fun. After that,
well the rest is history– skiing is now a significant leisure activity around the world. However, there
are important points in the history of skiing that made a considerable difference in the ski world we
know today.
It is still being debated where skiing originated, but it most likely the Tuvan's who developed skiing
within the Altay Mountains of China. Altay skis were made of wood with one end curled upward,
there were straps for your feet, and horsehide on the bottoms. The horse hair made the skis grip
when walking uphill, but then slide when going downhill. The Tuvan's also used a single pole called
a Taiyak for steering and balance. The skis were approximately 8 feet long and skier used them by
leaning back extremely far; making them gain speed quickly. This

Personal Narrative On Snowboarding And Skiing
When I was twelve years old my best friend's family decided to try snowboarding and skiing for the

her that I was in good hands and all that good stuff. When he arrived back at his house he said

I have never had the opportunity to go snow skiing before. It has always been a fascination of mine

Being a beginner has its challenges and learning opportunities that come with it. For skiing, no one

Descriptive Essay On Skiing
For my entire life as I know it, I had been skiing. Ever since I was a little chubby four–year old,
falling off the magic carpet every time it bumped the slightest bit, I'd been on skis. And I was more
than satisfied with that; I was as happy as a kid with a lollipop when it came to skiing. It was the
same every Saturday afternoon during winter: my mom would spend almost an hour layering me
with fleeces, squeezing my double layered legs into my snow pants, and tugging at me and
attempting in vain to force my feet into my hand–sized ski boots. And then I would realize I had to
go to the bathroom. Eventually, I think it got a little easier and I learned how to do it myself,
although I absolutely despised putting on my boots and the suffocating heat of one too many layers,
as hot as my mom's spicy chili fish.
After all,
why would I want to be like one of those obnoxious snowboarders sitting smack in the middle of the
path? I loved the adrenaline of swerving full speed down a powdery slope more than anything else
in the world. I loved being so carefree and blithe, slicing through the air like a falcon. But I never
truly realized how many species of birds there could be– at least until I saw her.
It was just another Saturday afternoon, but instead of my family taking their usual places in line, my
friends took their spots. As , my brother would stay at home to do homework, my dad would stay
with him, and my mom still brought me just like before, only she now sat in the lounge instead of
accompanying me on the mountains. They all grew up a little more, so I did too. And even though I
missed them, I resulted to skiing with my friends, on whispering hill that became my friend– still
Saturday afternoons, still my favorite thing.

Daredevil Skiing

  • 1. Daredevil Skiing Have you ever landed on a runway in the middle of the French Alps? How about flying directly over the heads of beachgoers just before you land? You might want to take a trip to see at least one of them if you get the chance. You could even take an epic journey and visit several of them in one trip. Just pack your bags and head over to SeaTac Airport for the adventure of a lifetime. Before you drop your car off at Aeroparking for safekeeping, take a look at a few of some of the strangest airports in the world. Courchevel, France If daredevil skiing is your idea of a perfect activity when you're traveling, then you'll probably enjoy landing at the ski resort in Courchevel. This incredible airport runway looks just like a ski run, and it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to land at the airport, you must first fly directly over the heads of people on the beach. Because of the position of the runway, you could be close enough to the ground to see what the beachgoers are wearing. The tourists don't usually seem to mind, but the sound of the landing planes can be somewhat deafening. Barra, Scotland Forget flying over the shoreline – how about landing right on the beach instead? That's what you'll do if you fly to this Scottish island. Planes have been landing there since the 1930s. Although the runways are not paved, they accommodate over 1,000 flights annually. Gibraltar The airport in this British territory between Spain and Morocco has, perhaps, one of the weirdest runways on the planet. It is intersected by the busiest road in Gibraltar. Amazingly, the airport and the town are able to use the space in harmony. Exploring some of the world's strangest airports can be fun, but you'll probably be glad to return to SeaTac! After a hair–raising landing or two, you might develop a whole new level of appreciation for SeaTac Airport. Another detail you can appreciate: Your car will be safe at Aeroparking while you're ... • 3. The Biomechanics Of A Skiing For this research assignment, the topic I would like to discuss is the biomechanics of a skiing. Skiing is one type of sports that has begun to increase in popularity. Athletes are always trying to discover ways to get stronger, faster, and higher with minimal injuries. Improving our biomechanics is one important way of improving your athletic performance, and limit injuries. However, there are many pros and cons within the biomechanics of skiing. I would like to learn more about leg alignment and form and how these can affect the skier. Abnormalities of the leg and lower–leg alignment are important factors while skiing. To be an efficient skier it requires a balanced movement. My methods of data collection to analyze my subject 's skill movement will consist of a multi–methods approach. This approach includes a mixture of literature reviews, observational review through video analysis, and interviews with the athlete. These data collection methods will help me in my project by allowing me to strategically point out differences in angular placement and posture, along with speed variations due to changes in position. I will be able to compare a professional style of skiing with that of a novice skier and point out the differences in positioning between an experienced skier and a novice skier. I will limit research information to scholarly and reputable sources only. Once of the sources I will reference comes from a research article called Clinical Biomechanics of Skiing. ... • 5. Skiing: Getting Started Skiing. Getting Started By Bobby Buys Oct 15, 2012 How many times have you enviously watched those skiers gliding down snow covered slopes, perfectly balanced and having the time of their lives? They make it seem effortless but in truth, every one of those seeming experts had to start from the basics. Let's take a look at what you need to get started with skiing. Before you rush out and book that skiing holiday, the best advice is to take professional skiing lessons. Whether you've done some basic skiing before or you are a complete beginner, a professional ski instructor will get you started and help you avoid the wrong techniques right from the beginning. How do you pick a good instructor? Do your homework and consider the following factors, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For a beginner it is better to hire your ski equipment until you gain more experience, but sooner or later you will want to acquire your own gear. Basically you will need three layers of equipment to keep you warm and safe. The first layer should consist of thermal underwear and ski socks, to transfer moisture away from your body. The second layer provides padding and more insulation and includes your ski boots. Finally complete your gear with head protection, such as a helmet or beanie, ski goggles, gloves and a good quality waterproof jacket. Of course you will need skis, these should be matched to your boots and bindings to make sure that your skis remain connected to your feet. Match your skis to the type of skiing you intend to pursue, downhill skiing or cross–country skiing, for example. In South Africa the main skiing area is located at Tiffindell, in the Southern Drakensberg. It is a relatively high ski resort at over 2,800 meters. Just over the border in Lesotho is Afri–Ski, which has a one–kilometre slope open during the months of June to August. Skiing is a world–wide sport, with resorts in many countries. Your new interest can add an exciting, fun dimension to your travels. About the

  • 8. Heli Skiing Research Paper What is Heli–skiing? By Pete Malcolm Aug 24, 2012 Imagine yourself being ferried by one of those gondolas at a ski resort. You see slopes that look like totally awesome places to ski. You ask the guide whether you'll be skiing there and he curtly replies "No," and he points you in the other direction where you see natural scenery with a variety of landscapes. "That's where you'll be skiing." So what is heli–skiing? It's getting on a helicopter and then going to that radical wilderness site to ski. No rules, no artificial snow blowers and nobody to tell you what you can or you can't do. It's about finding that extreme location via a chopper, getting dropped off and totally going for it. There are two types of heli–skiing, the US/Canadian model and the European model. The US/Canadian model is pretty much like your normal routine skiing venue, except that your site is way off limits and practically unfettered by human existence and you get to be brought by the chopper again and again to your starting point. The chopper is acting like your normal ski–lift. The European model is similar though much more exhausting because of the length of travel that you have to make. The chopper drops you down on your starting point and then you proceed to meet it at the end of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The foremost reason is that it's possibility not safe. Why? Because the locations you are brought into are usually remote. Just imagine how difficult it would be to retrieve or rescue people if a mishap occurs. This is also the reason why most of these excursions also come with the requisite guide. The guide is not just your friendly advisor, the guide is the one who will point out the best route for you once you disembark from the chopper. Their designation as guides is brought about by their familiarity with the terrain and most of all, their professional certification from the International Federation of Mountain Guide ... • 10. College Essay On Nordic Skiing An interest, a hobby, or a lifestyle? Nordic skiing has put many tolls on my life. Through hard work and dedication; I have put myself in a position where not only would my application be incomplete without mentioning skiing, but my life would be unthinkable without it. To be a successful skier, there are many obstacles a person must overcome. Which all include an unimaginable prize to be won. Nordic skiing, also known as cross country skiing, has popularized over the previous decades. This sport involves several muscles working together to achieve the fastest speed while maintaining the speed for the entire race. This sport is very difficult and requires full commitment to be successful. My background behind Nordic skiing is fairly simple. At the age of four, I was put on my first pair of nordic skis. My family does not have any relations to cross country skiing, besides touring around. At age six, I was signed up for my first race. I vaguely remember my first races as a child. I spent my childhood racing for a club team (Polar Bear Ski Club) and enjoyed racing in the Bill Koch (Olympian, 1976) League. I adored the sport and kept with it throughout my childhood ... We stand by eachother through times of doubt and reminisce on our good memories. We enjoy the company of one another. • 12. Personal Narrative: The Joy Of Skiing Have you ever skied down snow–covered slopes? Ever felt the rush of cold air in your face? If you have, you would understand the exhilaration and thrill of skiing. No matter how many times I slide down glistening white mountainsides I will never lose that feeling of joy and a little hint of fear. Scrolling through videos, I am filled with nostalgia. Never will that feeling wash away. I always enjoy looking back at little me, so inexperienced while learning to ski, because it shows me how I've learned, how I've grown, opportunities my family has given me, and how I've succeeded. Skiing is not just about sliding down hillsides. It's about learning and achieving. As the child tumbles down the hillside, she learns a very valuable lesson, look at where you're going not where you are. That little girl was once me. Back then, I had only thought of it as a lesson for skiing, but it is also a lesson for life. Skiing may teach you how to keep your balance and use flexibility to your advantage, but it also teaches you to rely on others including my instructors and parents. ... • 14. Descriptive Essay About Skiing A long, steep, and white snow covered mountain, or a black diamond, sounds very fun to most skiers. Skiing is hard to do at first but once one gets the hang of it, it becomes a fun and exciting experience. My first time skiing a black diamond was a terrifying and exciting experience, and in the end I conquered my fear of skiing down steep slopes. I snapped back to reality as I wolfed down the last of my tasty hotdog, dreading what was next on the agenda. My family and I had been having a blast at the sugar bowl ski resort in Donner, and we had just finished up our lunch break. We are all pretty good skiers, however me being the youngest, I was the least experienced in my family. I had never Skied down a black diamond, and I didn't want to. "Hey bud are you ready to Ski the black diamond?" my father said as we started to move. My dad was probably the most experienced skier in my family. "Yeah, I guess," I replied. But I wasn't. I didn't want to ski it at all as we slowly trotted over to the skies in our large metal boots. "Now remember you don't have to do this if you don't want to." My father said. "But I highly encourage that you do." I just nodded silently. As I sat down to put on my ski boots, I glanced up at the mountain that we were about to ski. It looked menacing. It was almost as if I was looking up at my impending doom, if I were to choose to go. I then imagined myself on it. • 16. Personal Narrative-Year Skiing It was a chilly Sunday afternoon with blue skies and all the makings for a good day of early season skiing on that fateful November afternoon. The day was winding down, the Broncos had just kicked off, and my friends and I had just leapt off the chairlift to embark on our last run of the day. All was well on the way down, a blur of orange jerseys rushing by as I sped down the mountain making the most of the last run of my day. Upon our final few turns of the afternoon, I found myself in a predicament that would later shape me into the person I am today. An exposed rock, due to the minimal snow conditions of early season skiing, clashed with my skis sending me flying out of my bindings head first into the snow. My natural instinct was to put my hands out to protect my fall, big mistake. The pressure put on my right thumb, due to the immense force of the fall, sent pain shrieking through my body. I knew something was wrong immediately, but I neglected to say anything was seriously wrong with me. After many x–rays and doctor's visits the doctor was able to determine, I had a complete tear of my Ulnar Collateral Ligament in my thumb as well as bone fragment scattered around the cavity of my thumb. • 18. Descriptive Essay On Skiing As I pick up speed I feel the wind push harder and harder in the opposite direction, but my jacket breaks its bite. The reflection of the sun on the stark white snow makes the path ahead harder to see; my destination is still visible, its dead ahead. As I close in I have second thoughts but it's too late for that now. I lean forward to ride my edge and make a quick turn as I launch off of the jump which sends me into a spin until I'm facing my original direction, 360 degrees then my snowboard touches the ground again and I land it. Well, at least I planned on landing it. However, the reality of the situation was different, I ended up hitting the hard snow with my head and shoulder. That happened on my most recent skiing/snowboarding trip. I've been skiing for as long as I can remember but the past few trips I have snowboarded instead. Skiing and snowboarding are some of the things that I'm most passionate about, but the most important part is doing those things with my family and friends. So, get ready to learn some knowledge about me. Throughout my life, I have been on quite the number of ski/snowboard trips and even though a lot of them have been in the same place it never gets old. I'd tell you about my first time going but I was only two years old so I don't remember, I guess you will have to be satisfied with the story of another time. Last December, I remember the long packing process and the boring drive to the hotel. My aunt and uncle along with my friend, Austin and my sister, Abby were in the vehicle with me. You could say the route to Hood River is somewhat scenic, but after traveling it countless time I couldn't help falling asleep for parts of it. While I wasn't asleep I was busy chatting with everyone in the vehicle which makes it feel shorter but it could never be short enough, I was already excited. When we finally arrived at our hotel, Hood River Inn, it was late. I immediately notice a difference in temperature when I get out of the vehicle, but it's okay, I love the cold. Then we begin to take in our luggage. Once we were checked in and settled, Austin and I headed for the pool. • 22. Descriptive Essay On Skiing Tree Hugger Scrrrrrrr came the satisfying sound of my skis digging into the snow. "Wait up, Mara!" my dad called, a little ways up the mountain with my best friend Sierra and her dad. "Can I go up ahead?" I pleaded, looking down at the snow covered slope in front of me. My dad let out a breath of air in a long sigh making puffs of fog in the frosty air. "Go ahead, little trooper," he finally said, reaching a decision. "But make sure to wait for us at the bottom, okay honey?" "Oh yeah!" I cheered, starting down the slopes. I was only in kindergarten, but I already knew that skiing was going to be one of my favorite sports. I liked every bit of it, how the fresh mountains and the green trees whiz past as you shred the slopes, and how great it feels to be at the top of the mountain, the sky seeming so close you could touch it. And not to mention the feeling of joy and accomplishment you get when you are at the bottom, staring at the run you had just tackled. I wasn't born a good skier though, nobody is and that's the sheer truth of it. As a five or six year old, I was on a beginning slope called Discovery Chair in Mammoth, but to me, it felt like a major accomplishment. After I got the okay from dad, I wasted no time going as fast as I could, carving my turns like how a carpenter works with wood. Scrrrrrr, scrrrrrrrr, scrrrrrrrr. Skiing is the act of traveling on top of snow on long blades called skis that are attached to the feet. There are many different types of skiing such as alpine skiing, nordic skiing, ski jumping, and aerial skiing. Each of these are unique in their own way when it comes to how it is impacted by physics. The most common type of skiing is downhill skiing, or otherwise known as alpine skiing. The skier must be very agile and be able to make quick turns while going at fast speed. In order to do this they must obtain momentum by turning potential energy into kinetic energy. This is a relationship between work and energy. The person begins at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is a fancy name for what was mentioned in the previous paragraph about friction between the skis and snow. • 26. College Essay About Skiing This part of the run is not difficult for me, which is good because my mind is already focused on the cliff that I know is about 100 feet down the ridge and 50 feet on my left (north). Waiting for my turn at the top, I had lots of time to sit and think about what I was about to do, igniting my nerves and adrenaline, making my body feel numb. I ski to my spot above the cliff, and the iconic House Rock looks like it always does, almost like a fifty foot diving board that will shoot you out half–way down the rest of the mountain. I stop right above the point of no return. I must choose to hit the cliff or not. There is no turning back once I move from this spot. One of the most important lessons I have learned from skiing is that I am most successful when I fully commit. As I got older and started doing more intense tricks and bigger cliffs, I started to see a trend. Whenever I dropped into a jump, rail, or cliff unsure of what I was going to do, or not ready to fully commit to the trick, I had a tendency to end up on the ground ... We had a terrible project, an even worse presentation, and embarrassed ourselves at state with the third worst score. Two years later, we decided that we wanted to fully commit and try to make it to Nationals. We were almost completely finished with our animation (a video of Boston Tea Party) by the time Christmas break came around. This time, we placed third at state: one place away from going to Nationals. Coming up just shy of our goal hurts. • 30. Personal Narrative: Snow Skiing Snow skiing. The first day learning to ski is rough for almost anyone you ask. The day before my first ski trip, I could not help but wonder. Was I going to fall on my butt? Would I fall flat on my face? Would I make a fool out of myself? These were all questions that I knew I would soon get answers to. I had built up such intense feelings of nervousness and excitement that I could hardly tell the difference. All I wanted was to make it out alive. I was 12. I had heard the stories from my Uncle Randy about ski trips, but I wanted to try it for myself. He finally decided I was old enough to tag along. The two and a half hour car ride felt like a lifetime. It was my first time at Chestnut mountain in Galena, and I was very excited. The sun was shining bright. The temperature was in the mid to lower 30's, which was perfect for skiing. When we got to the locker room, I started putting on all my gear. Excitement filled the air as other skiers geared up to take on the slopes. When I finally got my rental boots tight and buckled up, my uncle looked at me and laughed. Nastar consists of a starting gate at the top, many racing gates in the middle that you have to ski around, and a finish line at the end. It is very exhilarating as you ski your fastest and brush the gates with your body as you ski down. You can even earn a small bronze, silver, or gold medal if you get a fast enough time. • 32. Descriptive Essay On Skiing For my entire life as I knew it, I had been skiing. Ever since I was a little, chubby four–year old, tumbling right off the magic carpet like a glove in the dryer every time it shuddered even just the slightest bit, I'd been on skis. And I was more than satisfied with that. It was the same every Saturday afternoon during winter: my mom would spend almost an hour smothering me in layers upon layers of fleece, coaxing my pudgy legs into my snow pants, and tugging at me and attempting in vain to force my feet into my hand–sized ski boots, haul after heave, until I was finally ready to hit the snow. And then I would realize I had to go to the bathroom. Eventually, I think it got remotely easier as I learned how to do it myself, although I absolutely despised putting on my boots myself and the suffocating heat of one too many layers, as hot as the elementary school classrooms that year when all the air conditioners decided it would be a good idea to stop working in June. Other than this frustration, I loved skiing with all my heart. It was the kind of excitement where my hand would shoot up in class to tell all my teachers that my favorite activity was skiing, even if it was the middle of summer. The kind where I would wait through all the other seasons, just to finally reach winter. Stopping or switching to snowboarding had never even tiptoed into my mind. After all, why would I want to be like one of those obnoxious snowboarders sitting smack in the middle of the path? The adrenaline as I swerved full speed down a powdery slope was what I lived for. Nothing compared to feeling of being so carefree and blithe, slicing through the air like a golden eagle. But I never truly realized how many types of birds there could be– at least until I saw her. It was just another Saturday afternoon, but instead of my family taking their usual places in line, my friends took their spots. As our lives settled to move on without us, my brother would stay at home to do homework, my dad would stay with him, and my mom still brought me just like before, only she now sat in the lounge working on her unfair laptop instead of accompanying me on the mountains. They all grew up a little more, so I tried to, too. And even though I missed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. Narrative Essay About Skiing I open my eyes, and I stare at my clock and let myself wake up from the drowsiness that feels like it's consuming me. My eyes focus and read the clock, it around 7:00, so I crawl out of bed and slowly get dressed. It's not a school day, and my muscles relax as soon as I realize that. I drag myself downstairs and feel my body function return as the sleepiness withdraws. I start my day off by logging on to the computer and seeing what's new on youtube. Then my dad comes into the room I was in and said "Hey bud, we will be going to the ski park today". I feel a shock as I remember dad saying something about it yesterday. I told my dad I'm going to go to the other hill. He gave me a stern look, and he went down the hill alone. I noticed i might crash if I sled down to the slope shortcut to the other hill, so I took off the base of my skis and left the boot attachments on my boots. One small step at a time, I slowly climbed down the shortcut. It was so irritating and annoying I wondered if this was the best alternative rather than risking it and going down the hill. When I finally got down the hill I thoroughly decided to stick with that one hill. So I kept on enjoying the fast but not fastest speed. Lunch came and I went inside the center and got a bite to eat. Isaac got pizza, and I got some aswell. The pizza didn't taste that good, and I could tell it was very cheaply made, and I questioned why one slice was SO expensive. After we ate lunch and became reorganized, I went back to the hills and went down them a few more times. But then, the accident happened. As I was being hoisted up by the pulley machine everything seemed normal, but when i got to the top of the hill, I noticed I was slipping as I let go of the pulley. I tried to keep my balance, but that only made it worse, the base of my skis interlocked. The head of one ski clasped onto the back of my other ski, twisting my foot backwards in a frightening and unnatural position. The pain was immense and very sharp. I quickly looked at what caused the pain and I saw it. I panicked, and because of the intense pain, I screamed for my dad, who was a couple feet away from me, saw what was wrong, because I usually don't scream in pain like that. • 36. My Experience Of School Skiing It was February sixteenth, I was in sixth grade and I had gotten a flyer for the annual school ski trip. More excited than ever I took it home and put it on the fridge so my mom and dad would see it when they got home from work. Twenty minutes after they got home they hadn't said anything, so I casually took it off the fridge and placed it on the couch between my parents in the back room. My mom looked at me with a tired sigh and asked what is was. I happily told her that it was an application form for a school field trip coming up! She signed the form and stated that we'd be renting skis from Barrie's Extreme Sports Store. I was surprised that this wasn't a bigger deal! I had never been skiing before and it was clearly something that needed way more attention! It was very upsetting. But on the other side of the couch sat my dad, who would give me anything I ever desired. I'm spoiled by both my parents but he definitely spoils me more than my mother does, not to mention his constant enthusiastic support. "Skiing?! How exciting! You've never been right?" he exclaimed "Nope, never been!""You'll like it, it's exhilarating!" he was clearly very excited for me. That's when my brother, Lance, walked in. "What are we talking about," Lance began, "Are we going skiing!" "Olivia is, you aren't" my mother responded. Stoddart conducted a study about animals' presence in skiing industry in his article, "Grizzlies and Gondolas: Animals and the Meaning of Skiing Landscapes in British Columbia, Canada." When people think of skiing, most of them probably picture snow–covered nature, especially mountains and forest; however, that public perception has been overlooked one thing: "animals are also present" as the part of nature (Stoddart, 2011). The subject of this article is to examine three ways in which animals present in skiing world: animals as symbols of nature in the skiing business, environmentalists' concern about endangered animals as a consequence of expansion of industry, and interactive interviews with encounters. • 70. Skiing Is A Way Of Survival As you stand at the top of a run and look down over the mountain; with twisting and turning slopes, you feel at peace and connected with nature. This is what skiing can do for you; however, it hasn't always been a way to get out and enjoy the mountain air. As a matter of fact, skiing used to be mainly for survival. Scientists have found rock art drawn by ancient civilizations in 8000 B.C. that depict people skiing. Back in those days, it was the Scandinavians, Russians, and Altay Mountain folk that were using some form of skis to travel vast distances and hunt; thus skiing was a way of survival. It wasn't until about the 1860's that Americans in Sierra Nevada started to use skis to race and have fun. After that, well the rest is history– skiing is now a significant leisure activity around the world. However, there are important points in the history of skiing that made a considerable difference in the ski world we know today. The horse hair made the skis grip when walking uphill, but then slide when going downhill. The Tuvan's also used a single pole called a Taiyak for steering and balance. The skis were approximately 8 feet long and skier used them by leaning back extremely far; making them gain speed quickly. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We went to my house to ask my parents about the trip five day snowboarding trip. I asked them separately and got two different answers. My dad was all for it, he even offered to pay for everything. My mom on the other hand was worried because it was all the way in Pennsylvania and it was five days away from me . The fact that I had never been on a snowboard or skis in my life didn't help my argument either. So as the day approached I still hadn't received a direct answer from my mom. So Tim, my friend's dad went to my house and reassured her that I was in good hands and all that good stuff. When he arrived back at his house he said through my friend's door " Get packed we are leaving in two days" and the arrangements were made. On the day of the trip, my dad gave Tim the money for my equipment and such. He also turned to me and handed me my very first 100 dollar bill for whatever I wanted or needed on the trip. My mom handed me a prepaid cell phone and she told me to call her twice a day. I went ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After about a half hour of walking down the mountain I sat on my snowboard to take a break. When I stood up the board slid out from under me and started making it's way down the mountain without me. In turn, I was forced to chase it, as it caused other snowboarders and skiers to dodge and avoid my board and me. The people who caught my board were in there twenties and did not have any sympathy for the situation and laughed at me for being scared to fall off the mountain. If I ever try snowboarding again, I will know not to take off the snowboard while on the mountain and that's how I learned my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Descriptive Essay On Skiing For my entire life as I know it, I had been skiing. Ever since I was a little chubby four–year old, falling off the magic carpet every time it bumped the slightest bit, I'd been on skis. And I was more than satisfied with that; I was as happy as a kid with a lollipop when it came to skiing. It was the same every Saturday afternoon during winter: my mom would spend almost an hour layering me with fleeces, squeezing my double layered legs into my snow pants, and tugging at me and attempting in vain to force my feet into my hand–sized ski boots. And then I would realize I had to go to the bathroom. Eventually, I think it got a little easier and I learned how to do it myself, although I absolutely despised putting on my boots and the suffocating heat of one too many layers, as hot as my mom's spicy chili fish. I loved the adrenaline of swerving full speed down a powdery slope more than anything else in the world. I loved being so carefree and blithe, slicing through the air like a falcon. But I never truly realized how many species of birds there could be– at least until I saw her. It was just another Saturday afternoon, but instead of my family taking their usual places in line, my friends took their spots. As , my brother would stay at home to do homework, my dad would stay with him, and my mom still brought me just like before, only she now sat in the lounge instead of accompanying me on the mountains. They all grew up a little more, so I did too. And even though I missed them, I resulted to skiing with my friends, on whispering hill that became my friend– still Saturday afternoons, still my favorite thing. Once again, I was standing in the line for the ski lift with my two usual skiing buddies, when I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
