3. Homelessness remains an issue throughout San Diego.
According to statistics, between 8,500 and 10,000 people
are homeless in the region. The majority of them reside in
Central San Diego, and nearly one quarter of them fall
under the category of “chronic homeless,” which refers to
"an unaccompanied homeless individual with a disabling
condition who has either been continuously homeless for a
year or more, or has had at least four episodes of
homelessness in the past three years." Moreover, many in
San Diego are “food insecure,” or lacking the resources to
obtain adequate nutrition. Of the over 3.1 million people
in San Diego County, nearly 450,000 persons, including
children, live below the poverty line, which makes them
“food insecure.” Through Christ's Kitchen and other such
programs, those in need can obtain important assistance in
improving their lives.
