  2. 2. WHAT: is the poem about? WHO: is speaking in this poem? HOW: does the poem get its message across? WHY: do you think the poet wrote this poem? WHAT: is YOUR response to the poem?
  3. 3. WHAT: is the poem about? <ul><li>Try and sum up the main idea of the poem in one or two sentences. </li></ul>
  4. 4. WHO: is speaking in this poem? <ul><li>is the poet speaking in the poem? </li></ul><ul><li>Is it someone else, real or imagined? </li></ul><ul><li>Is the poet speaking to you? Are they reflecting? Addressing the world in general? </li></ul><ul><li>Are there any other voices in the poem? </li></ul>

HOW: does the poem get its message across? <ul><li>LOOK </li></ul><ul><li>What does the poem look like? </li></ul><ul><li>What is its SHAPE- verse, blocks, across the page, short lines, long lines </li></ul><ul><li>Why does shape play a part in the message? </li></ul><ul><li>Why would the poet select the shape? </li></ul>
  6. 6. HOW: does the poem get its message across? <ul><li> SOUND </li></ul><ul><li>Imagery (poetic devices)- what are the main images used? What makes them striking? What specific devices have been used (SPAMROD)? </li></ul><ul><li>Diction- think carefully about word choice. </li></ul><ul><li>Mood-think about feelings. </li></ul>

WHY: do you think the poet wrote this poem? <ul><li>How does the poet feel about the reader? </li></ul><ul><li>Are you asked to be involved? </li></ul><ul><li>Are you meant to learn from the poem? </li></ul><ul><li>Are you given a message? </li></ul><ul><li>Is the poet’s message clear? </li></ul>
