Life Span Perspective Analysis
The number of different theories used practiced in social work can be overwhelming. At first glance,
the various approaches bleed together and seem too similar to decipher one from the next. But, after
an in–depth study of each model, the differences become evident. Two of the approaches that
especially stand out are the Life Span Perspective and the Strengths Perspective. The Life Span
Perspective draws from multiple theories to emphasize growth and change over a lifetime. The
Strengths Perspective differs from other social work theories by focusing on the positive
characteristics of a client and their environment. The Life Span Perspective evaluates a person over
their entire lifecycle by evaluating their social, psychodynamic, cognitive, moral, spiritual and
biological change and growth. Every different experience from a younger stage affects that person
through the rest of her lifespan. While each person is unique, this perspective gives us a framework
of the life course and gives us ideas of what to expect from one stage to the next. Because this
viewpoint draws from Positivist and Developmental theories, it looks for patterns and similarities.

Life span developmental psychology takes a scientific approach to human growth and change,
focusing on change during the life span. There are three main aspects to life span development:
cognitive, social, and physical development. This class is not simply a discussion of nature vs.
nurture, it explores the interaction between genetic and environmental factors that orient us towards
specific behaviors. Initially, my views on life span development were limited to more sociological
factors, and did not take into consideration physical developments of the brain. In relation to my
personal and professional identity this course has made me realize that development occurs on a
spectrum and that not everyone develops at the same time, in the same ways, making me more
understanding and compassionate towards those who developed differently than me. The three most
important lessons I have learned from this class are that development occurs throughout the entire
life span, infants begin learning at a very young age, and that senescence begins as early as young

Prenatal The first stage of my life span development that I will be discussing is stage one; prenatal.
My mother was pregnant at the age of 19 years old therefore did not have much knowledge as she
would with her next pregnancy. During the time of her pregnancy she claims that she "ate whatever
she wanted, and gained weight" (personal communication,July 2,2016). Some of these foods
included ice cream, fish sticks, French fries on a regular basis. Some of her favorite drinks she loved
to drink included cranberry juice and apple juice. Routinely visits at her doctor was very vital to her
and my father as well. My father always encouraged her to take certain vitamins for my health as
well as hers. As far as my mother's social environment it tended to be a lot stressful. My
grandmother kicked her out after she found out she was pregnant so was forced to live with my
paternal grandmother. She says while living there, his family was very welcoming and she didn 't

The last stage is the Formal operational stage. This stage is for ages eleven and up. This is the stage
when thoughts are better conserved, more logical and more thought out. More hypothetical thinking
occurs in this stage. I believe that any of these stages can be affected by many factors. These factors
include environment and surroundings, genes, and everyday interactions. As a parent I feel that it is

learning. Understanding the theories can deliver useful contents into individuals and society a set of

As noted in my initial reflection report, I have been dyslexic since a young age, which as taking me
a long time to understand and accept the effects of been a dyslexic person. Dyslexia as has taken a
tremendous affect in my education by disturbing my reading, writing and information receiving
methods. I am always trying to improve and activate my reading and writing skills to maintain a
sufficient academic level in order to effectively write reports, assignments and answer essay
questions. Also another area which needs improvement is my researching skills in order to extract
effective information.

In order to be able to complete all my semesters effectively I will need to concentrate on all aspects
of my modules, to do that I will need to ensure I read extensively into all my modules topes to

My Life Span Development Class
On February 17, 2016, our Life–Span Development class observed the physical, cognitive, and
social development of Asher, a 5.5–month–old male. The observation was conducted at Dordt
College in room CL2260 and the infant's parent consented to participate in the live observation.
Asher was quite sick and later saw a doctor, so the findings of this report may not entirely represent
Asher's development.
Asher was 5 weeks along when his mother, Abby, found out she was pregnant. Asher is the third
child and has a 4–year–old sister and a 3–year–old brother. Abby tried to eat as healthy as she could
during her pregnancy to ensure that Asher would be as healthy as possible. Thus, she avoided
lunchmeats, seafood, and soft cheeses. At 20 weeks, Abby had an ultrasound, in which no structural
abnormalities were found. Since this was her third child, Abby chose not to take part in prenatal
counseling. Labor lasted only about an hour, and Asher was born by Cesarean Delivery like his two
siblings. Asher was born on September 2nd, 2015, weighing 7lbs., 10oz. at a length of 21 inches.
These are both above average for both height and weight of newborns in North America but within
two standard deviations of the average (Santrock, 2014). At 5.5 months, Asher weighs 17 pounds.
This is about the normal weight, for Asher is on pace to triple his birth weight by age one (Santrock,
2014).

The life–span development approach addresses the basic nature versus nurture debate by allowing
for both. Just as our physicals selves are determined by both genetics and lifestyle, so are our

The second cognitive theory emphasizes social and cultural environment. Vygotsky's theory points
to our relationships with others as the definitions of ourselves (Nicholl, 1998, par. 13). Two other
theories of early development link environment with biology. Sandra Scarr, a behavior geneticist,
theorizes that heredity and environment are correlated. Author Judith Harris theorizes that heredity
and peer environment are the sole factors in a person's development, and therefore parents have no
affect on the development of their children. The life–span perspective should probably make room
for familial environment: family of origin and family of choice. Assuming Harris is correct, a life–
span approach to counseling will allow that children and spouses do influence an adult's
development. Environmental factors on a micro level feature the nuclear family; macro–level factors
can include social mores, regional cultural norms, and even national identity. Santrock points out

Carol Sigelman's Life-Span Human Development
According to the textbook, Life–Span Human Development, 7th edition, by Carol Sigelman, on
page 50, "adolescents who reach the formal operations are able to think more abstractly and
hypothetically than school–age children. They can define justice abstractly, in terms of fariness,
rather than concretely, in terms of the cop on the corner or the judge in the courtroom. They can
formulate hypotheses or predictions in their heads, plan how to systematically test their ideas
experimentally, and imagine the consequences of their tests." As of right now, I believe that I am
currently in the formal operations stage of Piaget's cognitive development theory. This stage occurs

This is extremely important for science major such as myself. This stage allows me to come up with
hyptoheses in the laboratory, test them, and draw conclusions. One last example that the formal
operations stage allows me to do is problem–solve out loud. This concept of formal operations
recognizes my ability to think problems through and verbalize them. This can be used to solve and
algebraic equation and then teach it to someone else who may not understand the problem. All of
these examples that I have shared can be backed up from the lecture, Perception and Cognition
Across the Life–Span, on slide 15 where is it states that formal operations "thought is more abstract,
characterized by: thought is full of idealism and possibility, thought is more logical, and the verbal
problem–solving ability." One last thing that the lecture, Perception and Cognition Across the Life–
Span, shares on slide 17 is that the formal operation stages uses "hypothetial–deductive reasoning."

At first glance, the various approaches bleed together and seem too similar to decipher one from the next. But, after an in–depth study of each model, the differences become evident. Two of the approaches that especially stand out are the Life Span Perspective and the Strengths Perspective. The Life Span Perspective draws from multiple theories to emphasize growth and change over a lifetime. The Strengths Perspective differs from other social work theories by focusing on the positive characteristics of a client and their environment. The Life Span Perspective evaluates a person over their entire lifecycle by evaluating their social, psychodynamic, cognitive, moral, spiritual and biological change and growth.
