Causes Of The Birmingham Bombing
One of the most remarkable events during the Civil Rights Movement was the Birmingham Church
Bombing. This event took place on an early Sunday morning in 1963, just before the early service
started at the Sixteenth Street Baptist church in Birmingham, Alabama. Nineteen sticks of dynamite
had been placed beneath the church steps in the basement below; as a result, four young African
American girls were tragically killed and others were severely injured (Dabkowski 1). The
malevolent "Klu Klux Klan" was to blame for this horrific event. It was an act of pure evil and
racism against African Americans. This tragedy left many African Americans heartbroken and angry
with the US government. Between the mourning for the young lives lost and the frustration that the
African Americans felt as second–class citizens, this event left a devastating mark in the Civil
Rights Movement. On the morning of September 15, 1963, the devastating event known as the
Birmingham Bombing took place. Eleven–year–old Sarah Collins and her fourteen–year–old sister,
Addie Mae Collins had decided to hide out in the ladies' room, which was in the church's basement
(Dabkowski 1). Shortly after, three other young girls joined them around 10:15 in the morning.
Cynthia Wesley, Carol Denise McNair, and Carole Robertson had no idea what they were in for by
joining the two sisters, instead of staying in Sunday school. After a few minutes of playing, as Addie
Mae Collins reached out to tie a sash on McNair's dress,

Social Groups Essay
Social groups have existed throughout time. We know that small social groups have existed in the
form of families throughout the history of human kind. Adam and Eve are said to have been the first
social group. Social groups are defined as having two or more people interact and identify with one
another. Some social groups include but are not limited to; the handicap, the homeless, the poor, the
wealthy, the powerful, different religious groups, different races and even sexual orientation. There
are several reasons why people join social groups. Most people join social groups because there are
many benefits for belonging to a group. People like to feel connected and feel that they can relate to
others. People tend to belong to groups ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Granted, we have come a long way, but there are still many people who are a long way from
changing their attitudes towards them. "On March 3, 1991, Rodney King was the driver of a car in
Los Angeles, California. The driver didn't stop when signaled by a police car behind him, but
increased his speed. When police finally stopped the car, they delivered 56 baton blows and six
kicks to King, in a period of two minutes, producing 11 skull fractures, brain damage, and kidney
damage. Unaware that the incident had been videotaped, the police officers filed inaccurate reports,
not mentioning the fact that Rodney King was left with head wounds. On March 15, 1991, four
police officers were arraigned on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and use of excessive
force" (Mike Lepore). This event may have lead to the bad attitudes towards authority, particularly
against the police. Many African Americans felt that this would not have happened if Rodney King
had been white. They believed that the only reason why Rodney King was beaten was because he
was an African American. When the four white police officers were acquitted by a white jury
selected from the suburbs, thousands of people in South Central Los Angeles responded to the
verdict with several days of rioting. The majority of low income families are minorities. Some
people who have no jobs and for those who have jobs, their wages are usually very low and they

Nineteenth Century Short Stories and the Gothic Genre Essay
Nineteenth Century Short Stories and the Gothic Genre The three short stories that I have chosen to
compare and contrast are: The Signalman by Charles Dickens, An Arrest by Ambrose Bearcy and
Napoleon and the Spectre by Charlotte Brontë. All these stories were completed by the mid to late
eighteenth hundreds. The Signalman is set by a railway in Britain, along a lonely stretch of a railway
line in a steep cutting. An Arrest is set in America and for the most part in a forest. Napoleon and the
Spectre is set in Paris. Gothic genre was one of the leading and most used genres of the nineteenth
century and this genre is very prevalent in all three of the stories that I have chosen. The gothic
genre originated from South ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The darkness also gives a sense of mystery to the author's writing. 'In the glow of an angry sunset,'
the stranger re–visits the line to see the signalman. The word 'angry' is far from comfortable or
romantic. This line also gives an eerie feel to the fading light and gives a feel that suggests that
something is must and is about to happen that is dark and evil. An Arrest by Ambrose Bearcy is a
story of a murderer who was awaiting 'his trial,' escaped by 'knocking down his jailer with an iron
bar,' and went into the forest. It was night and the forest in to which, he entered was renowned for
being wild and unsafe. He goes for many a mile and some how manages to exit the forest and finds
an old road and on the road there stood 'the figure of a man, motionless in the gloom.' The gothic
style protrudes from this line of the novel very clearly and adds to the sense of suspense and fear
that is plaguing this scene. The fugitive is almost face to face with 'the figure of a man,' and feels he
cannot turn his back for fear of being 'filled with buckshot,' so he stood there like a tree. The fugitive
is hoping that if he stands still enough he will become a tree and escape this horror. Until the moon
'sailed into a patch of unclouded sky,' 'the haunted man saw the visible embodiment of law lift an
arm and point significantly beyond him.' At which 'he

The Ballad Of Birmingham
There are thousands of poems out there that can touch many different people in many ways. Some
poems may go with something that is happening with that person in life or some may even just like
the poem in general. The poem, "Ballad of Birmingham," is one of the greatest poems I have ever
read. It is telling the story of African American's and what they went through during that time
period. There is a very strong historical and social context behind this poem that could really touch
everyone. The author who wrote "Ballad of Birmingham" was named Randall. He was born in
Washington, D.C on January 14, 1914. He became interested in poetry when he was a little kid and
he ended up publishing his first poem which was a sonnet and he won a prize ... Show more content

Social context also played a role on this poem. The story of the little girls played a big role on the
background of this poem. This was a terrible day in history for Americans and African American's
and to the families who lost a loved one. There were four little girls who died during the bombing
their names were the late Addie Mae Collins, the late Denise McNair, the late Carole Robertson, and
the late Cynthia Wesley. When Randall's wrote this poem it was also a tribute to these four little girls
that died that day. He did this by telling the story of a nameless mother and daughter that day. Even
though in the poem he just focuses on just one little girl that passed that day he is also honoring the
other girls who died that day as well. "His omission of names also allows him to represent and
remember the anonymous multitude of victims of racism and the civil rights struggle and to
remember the families left behind the mourn their dead." "Ballad of Birmingham" is showing the
tragic events that happened and it tells about racial tensions. On one of the online databases I found
tells the story of racism and how bad it was during that time. A women wrote some songs that
describes segregation and the racial tensions that took place during these time periods and how these
songs helped people. "Having grown up amid the barely glossed–over racism at the heart of
segregation, Odetta

The Common Man In Robert Bolt's A Man For All Seasons
In the opening lines of A Man for All Seasons by Robert Bolt, the Common Man proclaims, "It is
perverse! To start a play made up of Kings and Cardinals in speaking costumes and intellectuals
with embroidered mouths, with me" (3). The Common Man cannot believe that Bolt is choosing to
start off a play of Kings and Cardinals with a man such as himself. He does not believe he, a
Common Man, is worthy of this role. Within these opening lines the reader is faced with a question,
why did Bolt chose to allow the Common Man to begin the play? Bolt is attempting to make a point
about the presence of ordinariness and conformity, using Kings and Cardinals as an example of
characters who attempt to rise above and try to make a difference.
To begin, the play opens with a monologue by the Common Man. Bolt introduces the Common Man
in the opening lines with a monologue to show that the actions of the Common Man are important to
the play. To further justify the Common Mans purpose in the play; Bolt makes the Common Man a
narrator for the play. The Common Man takes on roles similar to a narrator by re–explaining scenes
and finding ways to engage the audience. Continuing within the first few opening lines, the audience
learns about the Common Man's basket of costumes and props that he uses to carry out his various
roles in the play, "(Backing towards the basket) Well, for a proposition of my own, I need a costume.
(Take out and puts on the coat and hat of Steward) Matthew! The Household of Steward of Sir
Thomas More!" (3). This basket introduces not only all the roles the Common Man has throughout
the play but it also signifies his importance to the play within just the first few pages. No other
character was chosen to play multiple roles in this play. Bolt chose to give the Common Man these
extra roles and narrator position because he knew he would be able to conform to such roles.
As well as pointing out the Common Man's multitude of roles in the play, Bolt also distinguishes the
Common Man's ability to make choices that go against his moral compass in order to stay alive,
unlike More. The contrast between More's willingness to die for what he believes in, and the
Common Man's unwillingness to stand up for anything at all,

Essay about Sight and Blindness in Oedipus Rex
Sight and Blindness in Oedipus Rex
Oedipus Rex is a play about the way we blind ourselves to painful truths that we can't bear to see.
Physical sight and blindness are used throughout the play, often ironically, as a metaphor for mental
sight and blindness. The play ends with the hero Oedipus literally blinding himself to avoid seeing
the result of his terrible fate. But as the play demonstrates, Oedipus, the man who killed his father
and impregnated his mother, has been blind all along, and is partly responsible for his own
blindness. When the play opens, the people of the town are asking Oedipus for help. A curse has
been cast upon the city and the only way to remove it, is to find the murderer of the last king, Laios.

It is ironic that the one individual, who comes to help the city, is the individual that has been the
cause of the curse. Oedipus is the illness. Oedipus and Jocasta both don't want to see the truth.
Although it may occur to them at some point, but they don't give it a second thought because they
think it is absurd and it isn't possible. "Why should anyone in this world be afraid, since fate rules us
and nothing van be forseen? A man should live only for the present day. Have no more fear of
sleeping with your mother: How many men, in dreams, have lain with their mothers! No reasonable
man is troubled by such things." Jocasta is further from believing than Oedipus, she constantly tells
him not to worry about it, don't get worked up, and to just forget what you were told. Oedipus
cannot forget what the oracle has said and goes on to pursue the case.
Through the course of the play Oedipus is the detective, the judge, and the jury. He investigates,
decides a verdict, and carries out his own punishment. When Tiresias arrives at Thebes Oedipus
questions him looking for answers. Tiresias is a blind man, who ironically can see the future and
truths of people's lives. It is Tiresias who is the first person to tell Oedipus that he has killed his own
father. He tells Oedipus "you do not see the evil in which you live." Oedipus doubts Tiresias' ability
to see the truths because of his physical blindness and states, " You

Fitzgerald’s Use of Color in the Great Gatsby
F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel, The Great Gatsby, exposes the corruption and greed of the
Roaring Twenties. Fitzgerald is able to captivate readers' attentions through his employment of color
symbolism. Fitzgerald portrays important messages in the novel by his symbolic use of colors.
Colors play an important role in Fitzgerald's descriptions of the lives of Jay Gatsby, Nick Carraway
and many of the other characters in the novel. Fitzgerald uses the colors white, yellow, and green to
express certain sentiments to the reader, commenting what is going on in the story. Fitzgerald uses
the color white to symbolize purity and innocence, while yellow is used to symbolize moral decay,
and death. Green is used to represent hope and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Gatsby attempts to hide his dishonesty, Nick, considers himself "one of the few honest people
that I have ever known" (Fitzgerald, 59) and Fitzgerald often describes him as wearing white. The
first time he attends one of Gatsby's infamous parties, he wears a white flannel suit. Nick is aware of
the importance of this event, being formally invited to one of Gatsby's parties, and wants to project
the right image. His white suit emulates honesty and the appearance of being untainted. Similar to
white projecting honesty and purity, Fitzgerald also uses it to symbolize perfection. Daisy, always in
white, was perfect in Gatsby's eyes. He lived his life around her, in order to reclaim her. Just as
Daisy's whiteness symbolized perfection to Gatsby, the white world of the upper class was the
epitome of perfection for Myrtle Wilson, Tom's mistress. To Myrtle, the perfect life would be to live
like Daisy, to be wealthy. Although she lives in the valley of ashes as the wife of a garage owner, she
feels she belongs with the upper class. She stakes claim in high society through Tom, but will never
be fully able to gain access to their elite world. Fitzgerald shows her attempt to become "white"
through her clothing. When she is first seen in the novel, she is wearing "a spotted dress of dark
blue" (Fitzgerald, 25).

A Comparison of Individual Responsibility in Oedipus Rex...
Individual Responsibility in Oedipus Rex and A Doll's House
In Sophocles' Oedipus Rex and Ibsen's A Doll's House, the main characters – Nora and Oedipus, are
both constructed to illustrate flaws in society. Oedipus' psychological evolution sees him begin as an
all–powerful, righteous king, who seemingly through no fault of his own murders his father and
marries his mother. His evolution ends with his self–blinding, an action which Sophocles' uses to
establish the true freedom of the individual before divine authority. In A Doll's House, the
development of Nora Helmer leads her from believing that she is happily married to realizing that
she is a mere possession for her husband's entertainment. By her decision at the end of the ... Show

Instead of dismissing the concerns of his citizens, Oedipus shows that he is in touch with the needs
of the common man. He professes that his spirit grieves for the city, for himself, and for all the
people [ln. 76]. He further goes on to say that he has already taken measures to isolate a cure by
sending his brother–in–law Creon to the Oracle at Delphi to receive a prophetic vision. The response
Creon returns with is that the source of the plague is within Thebes itself, in the form of the
murderer of Laius, Thebes' former king. In Ancient Greece, the Oracle was a means by which
mankind was able to communicate with the gods. Oedipus' decision to immediately send a
messenger (in the form of Creon) to the Oracle is appropriate because since the King was considered
to be "first of men," he should therefore be the first to undertake the initiative to contact the gods.
This concept of being the only source of hope is re–enforced throughout the play not only by
Oedipus' own statements such as "I acted at once" [ln. 81] but also by his anticipation of advice and
suggestions.3 In the opening scene, the priest refers to Oedipus as "a man of experience.4"
Experience can only be gained by constant action. When the priest hints that Oedipus should send to
Delphi for help, he has already done so; When the chorus suggests

Giangrande Rhetorical Devices
This rhetorical analysis will define the ethos and pathos in "Allowing the Mind to Wander" by
Carole Giangrande. The importance of this article rests on an emotional plea, which provides the
reader with a call for justice to the plight of indigenous people in Canadian society. This rhetorical
device is part of the pathos of Giangrande's (1990) article that evokes sadness and pity in the way
that white Canadian society has alienated and marginalized the First Peoples. More so, the ethos of
the article reveals the problem of an apathetic society that has lost the spirit of the 1960s Civil
Rights era, which is desperately needed in the 21st century. The loss of cultural respect for the First
Peoples reveals the problem of a white hegemonic society as part of a modern trend in political
activism. Giangrande (1990) presents these rhetorical devices to show the loss of moral and civic
activism to defend the indigenous peoples of Canada. In essence, this rhetorical analysis will define
the importance of pathos and ethos in "Allowing the Mind to Wander" by Carole Giangrande.
Giangrande (1990) often relies on an emotional appeal of individual members of tribes, which show
the abuse of indigenous peoples in a white Canadian society. Certainly, Giangrande is a journalist
that gets does direct interviews with indigenous peoples , which reveals a pattern of logos in data
collecting methodology. However, these interviews are based on "individual accounts" of

The Documentary, Earthlings, Written And Produced By Shaun...
In the documentary, Earthlings, written and produced by Shaun Monson, we get a rude awakening
concerning the day–to–day practices of the large industries treatment of animals. This paper will
include an explanation behind the argument implied by the writer and defense against the argument
being made.
For a majority of humans, if we see someone else getting hurt, especially if it is someone we know,
it hurts us. We have the ability to understand and share the feelings of one another. This is called
empathy (Oxford Dictionary). In the beginning of the documentary, clips recorded from the time of
The Holocaust are shown. This is to make us aware of issues faced in the past where some humans
were not seen as equal as others. Even though it is obvious that all humans generally experience the
same emotions, the emotions within these humans did not matter. Therefore empathy in these times
was not shared amongst one another. They use this as a comparison because it is similar to how we
are with animals today. The dialogue in this documentary does not state exactly what the argument
is, so one must assume. The first assumed premise is, human are animals. Humans do not normally
fit the prototype of an animal like a cat or dog, but we are still animals. The second premise is that
humans empathize with other humans. When we see someone crying, we mirror their emotions, and
we feel the need to cry as well. Together, these two premises create the conclusion that humans
should empathize

Essay On The Birmingham Bombing
Since Sunday September 15, 1963, Birmingham received its nickname Bombingham. Many people

The Expressivity Of Creativity : Music
The Expressivity of Creativity Musicians in this era release music nowadays that always seems to
follow similar melodic patterns, making a great amount of the music we listen to sound all too
familiar. Listening to music is a way that people relax their soul; it takes them to a different place
and away from personal problems. Yet, there seems to be fewer and fewer artists that actually
express their emotions through their music, making it seem impassive and repetitive. Music is an
outlet where there are millions of possibilities within the combinations that you can choose from.
Different patterns can be used to accommodate according to how the artist is feeling and what they
are going through. When creating music there are an indefinite amount of possibilities for the writer
to use, yet the majority of the music we listen to seems to always follow a similar rhythmic pattern.
Artists are not taking advantage the privilege they have to express themselves through their
creativity. The final product an artist creates should illustrate an accurate representation of the
writer's emotions that the listener should be able to recognize and perhaps relate to the song. Music
is a great way to work with both the dark and the light side of our emotions. Due to music allowing
people to reminisce on older memories. Many people use music as a therapeutic way to calm their
souls, relax themselves, and allow for the melody to find serenity within. When listening to a song

Essay about Arthurian Legends Effects on English Society
What role did the great King Arthur play in the way English Literature is perceived? Did King
Arthur honestly exist? "Whether King Arthur existed or not is doubtful. However if King Arthur did
exist, then he would have lived sometime between 400 AD and 600 AD, a time of turmoil in Britain
following the Roman withdrawl. And a time when written literature did not exist, therefore events
during this period are only known about from folklore passed down several generations before being

The Arthurian Legends were an effect of the Romantic Era and resulted in abstract thinking, as well
as the arts including music, painting, poetry, and writing. The birth of the Arthurian Legends came
from Celtic mythology and medieval romance, while the existence of magic confirms the conception
of artistic intellect. Whether or not King Arthur truly existed, his influence dramatically changed the
English society and English Literature to its current form (Arthurian Legends Vol. 1).
The Arthurian Legend is seen to be extremely influential in benefitting the English people during the
Romantic Era. Even if King Arthur is a fictional character of myth and legend in England, his
childhood, countless glories and achievements as the king of Camelot, and the final down fall of his
strong empire validated his importance to English literature. Proof of King Arthur's existence would
possibly solidify the impact he had on the English culture (Arthurian Legends Vol. 1). The early
childhood of King Arthur seems to be the foundation of the epic journey of his life. Even though his
achievements as a child were brief, they were extremely important to King Arthur's outlook on life,
as well as character. As an optimistic squire, King Arthur had hopes of one day overcoming his
social standing. He received his wish when he unknowingly pulled the magical sword out of the

In the film's final scene the two meet up and are free from their life of isolation, law, hate, and
racism. The film has some additional storytelling that I would like to discuss. The Shawshank
Redemption is done in chronological order, but there are some parts when the characters flash back
to earlier times in their live so you can understand what is happening in the film. This is done so the
viewer still has an easy way to follow the movie. The characters of the film face both internal and
external conflict. The internal conflict is should I continue this life when I know I am innocent, and
the external conflict is from the prison, the prisoners, and the prison staff. The film does contain
symbolism. An example of the symbolism is when the warden learns of his fate and his last
judgment by reading the morning newspaper of himself and the prison being corrupt. Additionally,
symbolism is used with the holy bible the warden reads; when he finds the hammer that Andy uses
to dig out of the prison. There is a passage from Exodus that is used to symbolize the warden's
salvation and Andy's escape. Also, there is a metaphor that I remember and it happens when the
librarian (Brooks Hatlen) is freed from jail and he takes his own life. At the same time he hangs
himself his bird (Jake) fly's away and is freed. The metaphor is that the librarian is free of his
lifelong nightmare of being told what

Essay on Lady Macbeth
Discuss whether or not you feel sympathy for Lady Macbeth
There are certain aspects of Lady Macbeth's character that suggests she is good and therefore her
downfall increases my sympathy for her by the end of act 5. But I would also argue that she entailed
evil to fuel her sleeping ambition that would make her nemesis, her mental collapse, fully justified.
Lady Macbeth's role as a supporting wife at the start of the play exceeds the duties of a 'normal'
wife. She is the 'Eve' to Macbeth's 'Adam' and is tempted. Although Macbeth hints at the idea of
taking the crown in his letter home, it is Lady Macbeth's ruthless determination to make him king
that persuaded him to murder Duncan. Did she do this in the interests of Macbeth or was it ... Show

Although I have expressed unsympathetic views about Lady Macbeth, I do feel that a certain
amount of sympathy arises from Act 5 Scene 1, which tends to hide her previous evil deeds. Lady
Macbeth has not been seen by the audience for some time, this is because Macbeth has shut her out
of his life and she has become isolated and lonely. Lady Macbeth's mental collapse is caused by her
acknowledgement of her share of guilt and is expressed by images of Duncan's blood, "...will these
hands ne'er be clean?..."
This is also a contrast to her belief that water cleanses the conscience of any guilt. Lady Macbeth's
mental collapse reinforces the idea of Scotland being diseased under Macbeth's reign and because he
was not put their by divine right he cannot cure her.
Lady Macbeth's role as a supporting wife resurfaces again in scene 5. She is now afraid of the dark,
which is in contrasts to her earlier wishes for darkness to conceal the murder. Lady Macbeth is
haunted by dreams, like Macbeth ( "...O full of scorpions is in my mind..." ), and sleep walks; this
echoes my last sentence in that she is now taking on the trauma and guilt from her husband. This
reveals Lady Macbeth's compassion and love for her husband

Artist Breaking Female Expectations: Carole King
Another artist who broke female expectation was Carole King. King was only three years old when
her mother begun to teach her how to play the piano but did not enroll her to official lessons until
she was four. She got her big spot in the music industry, by writing her number one hit at a young
age and finally selling ten million copies of her first album, a record for any solo female artist in her
time. In the years between 1955 and 1999, King was then the most successful female songwriter,
having written 118 pop hits that landed on Billboard's top 100, one of them being performed by The
Beatles. Carole King had no trouble being accepted as a female artist although she did have social

Analysis Of Sia Furler's Chandelier
A woman's work is never done: many people grow up with this saying and feel it to be true. One
such woman, artist Sia Furler, has written countless number–one music hits, and she argues that
while society teaches us only young people can enter the mainstream music scene, you can still be
successful at an older age. Sia begins building her credibility by sharing personal accomplishments
as she enters the music scene, then goes on to cite convincing personal stories, and successfully
employs emotional appeals through her music debut; however, her dramatic entrance leaves you
wondering whether her attempt to appeal to listeners attention weakens her credibility as an artist.
Throughout her era of new music, Sia uses strong appeals to logos, with many facts and logical
progression of ideas. As her single "Chandelier" hits number one, people started to wonder who the
girl behind the wig really was. She gives them facts of her past that bring them to like her even
more, going on to reveal that she's written number one hits sung by other artists. On the cover of a
billboard magazine Sia has a paper bag on her head with a message written on it saying, "This artist
is responsible for over twelve million track sales, has a new single on the hunger games soundtrack,
and doesn't want to be famous..."
Sia uses logos to entice mystery, giving out facts that only make listeners more obsessed with
finding out who she is. This may be one of the most important aspects of Sia advertising her new
music. A video titled "ten songs you didn't know were written by Sia" gains millions of views. All
this attention and mystery only drive up sales of the new single.
Adding to her logos appeal, Sia uses strong sources that strengthen her credibility and appeal to
ethos. She goes on to cite personal stories from her past that suck in the listener and gains their trust.
"I was a pill–popper," the hit–maker shared with OK! Magazine, revealing that she became
dependent on Xanax and OxyContin, after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Sia hasn't yet revealed what she looks like but people everywhere already have a since of credibility.
This feeds the audiences values, who have discovered that Sia is a former drug addict who is now

With having only one of "The Four Ps," (the place), Juice Guys had to come up with a marketing

they wanted to sell fresh juices and fruit smoothies; however, they needed to know if the consumers

A Letter from Birmingham Jail Rhetorical Analysis
A Letter from Birmingham Jail written by Martin Luther King Jr. was a defence strategy of
nonviolent resistance to racism. The Birmingham campaign commenced on April 3rd of 1963, it was
a march coordinated to protest against racism and racial segregation in Birmingham, Alabama. The
campaign was entirely nonviolent and was coordinated by the Alabama Christian Movement for
Human Rights including Dr. King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference. On April 10th,
Judge Jenkins issued a blanket injunction going against "parading, demonstrating, boycotting, and
trespassing." Leaders of these two campaigns said they were going to disobey this rule they were
given. A few days later on April 12th, Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested along with other activist
leaders.
Once Dr. King arrived to Birmingham jail, he was faced with difficult conditions. An ally of his
sneaked in a newspaper that was published on April 12th. There was a statement written by eight
clergymen called "A Call for Unity," which went against what King and his campaign were
implementing on the streets of Birmingham, Alabama. The statement enraged Dr. King to write a
response. Dr. King used logos in the letter to help support his counter argument against the
clergymen. "In spite of my shattered dreams.." King wrote, "... I came to Birmingham with the hope
that the religious leadership... Would see the justice." By stating this, he showed pathos. King put
into words that through the process to end segregation, there was hardship along the way, and
dreams were destroyed by other people's actions who did not display care towards the black
community.
The city of Birmingham pervaded with brutal police officers, unjust courts, and bombings of Negro
homes that were unsolved. He is being knowledgeable, moral and reasonable. He is being
reasonable when he says that there is injustice everywhere, not just the South. He is knowledgable
when the clergymen told him he needs to wait and responds with that he has waited for about three
hundred and forty years. He finally shows morality when Dr. King wrote "...so we must see the need
for nonviolent gadflies to

How Feudalism Played A Major Role With State And The...

British Literature I

"In a feudal system, a peasant or worker known as a vassal received a piece of land in return for
serving a lord or king, especially during times of war." (Feudal System) During the Middle Ages and
other parts of modern Europe, through texts, we can see how feudalism played a major role with
state and the government. Kings looked at it as "higher authority" and have more control over the
knights, nobles, and peasants that lie within that system. Though kings have more of a physical
control throughout these texts, I believe the queens have more manipulative power. In Marie de
France's short story, "Lanval", it is obvious that the state was in control of many lives. Throughout

Later in the story, the reader experiences the power of the queen when Lanval denies her offer to

"The Queen saw him go off alone, And she headed straight for that knight. She sat near him, she
called him over,
She spoke as her heart would move her:
'Lanval, I really do respect you,
I really care, I really love,
And you can have all my love." ("France" 393–399)
The queen began to accuse Lanval of being gay because he had never had a woman show him
pleasure. Suddenly, Lanval admits that he is in love with someone else who would be far better than
the queen herself, which sent the queen away crying. Soon afterwards, Lanval was commanded to
appear in court without delay. The Queen's assertive power was shown by her ability to punish
innocent people, meaning she obviously got what she wanted regardless of whether it was right or
not. The negative characteristics of the king are shown in "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight". The
descriptions the author uses to describe King Author and the descriptions used at the end of the story

the time period, while Bertilak represents the proper traits of a king. King Arthur embarrasses

Larc Blackwood Persuasive Speech
A WORLD ON FIRE
Prologe "Good afternoon fellow leaders!" projected Larc Blackwood, "I have all called you here
today to propose an idea that can truly end all wars and national conflicts throughout the world!"
The other politicians and world leaders snickered and whispered their doubts to one another, a few
hopeful youths always proposed a "way to end all conflicts" a few times a year but they were always
cast aside as futile attempt at something that could never be obtained, true world peace. "And how
do we know your idea will be so different from all the others we've heard?" asked Wilson
Brightland. A sudden hush fell across the room, Wilson Brightland was the leader of one of the most
powerful nations known as Ultras and his voice carried much influence. He was six and half feet and
250 pounds of pure muscle and raw leadership, he rose through his countries ranks with prejudice
speed and assumed the High Graceship when he was only 28, the youngest to have ever
accomplished such a fet. His glare made Blackwood hesitate, but he carried on in his usual
commanding manner, "I propose that rather than waring with each other and progressively making
ourselves weaker, we all unite under one common banner, with one king chosen by the council, to
rule over the world as one unified nation!" There was a long pause. One minute went by, then slowly
a second one followed. A bead of sweat started to form on Blackwood's face. He feared that they

Martin get in a state to write his speech. Wyatt Walker actually advised Martin to not use his "I Have

speeches prior to this one, he thought it would be to much. Martin agreed he knew this speech had to
be different. This was the first time he was going to speak to a whole civil rights group. The event
was a big deal because it was going to be shown on all three television networks live. Kings staff

what he was going to do. He told his staff " I am now going upstairs to my room to counsel with my

Essay about Wealth in The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald
Wealth can develop a unique interpretation upon a person's life and can impact their future. Wealth
can be such a strong impact on someone that can determine whether they're selfish or a given
person. Wealth can definitely be overpowering and misleading, which could portray their true
identity. In the historical fiction novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, it shows us how
misleading wealth can be in a person's life.
One of the reasons why wealth is involved in Gatsby's life is because he is spending his own money
on things that aren't necessary. Nick was explaining how he didn't see a party one Saturday night, "It
was when curiosity about Gatsby was at its highest that the lights in his house failed to go on one
Saturday night" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, "My Finn informed me that Gatsby had dismissed every servant in his house a week
ago and replaced them with half a dozen others" (114). This infers how Gatsby uses his money to
protect him from rumors by paying his servants. In addition, Daisy and Tom escaped from justice
and went on vacation. This example shows how Tom and Daisy are manipulated into thinking that
money can solve any issue.
Furthermore, Wealth can make someone feel determined. Gatsby was determined to get Daisy, and
the only way to get Daisy was to become wealthy. To represent Gatsby's interception of becoming
wealthy, this quote symbolizes his determination and beginning to a happier life; "To Young Gatz,
resting on his oars and looking up at the railed deck, that yacht represented all the beauty and
glamour in the world" (100). This quote accurately describes Gatsby's desires for wealth and his
material items. The yacht, which belonged to Dan Cody, was the embodiment of wealth and fortune
Gatsby was not familiar with. He lived a low life of poverty, and this was his goal that he wanted to
reach. Dan took Gatsby with him and adopted him in a way, which gave Gatsby his start to fortune.
Once Gatsby gained all of his fortune, he practically had all of the beauty and glamour in the world.
Nevertheless, it always comes back to his lack of true beauty and love. He could never regain Daisy,
his true love, and the beauty that he could never purchase.

The Importance of George Wilson in The Great Gatsby Essay
The Importance of George Wilson in The Great Gatsby
F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is a superbly written and an intrinsically captivating novel
that deals with the decline of the American Dream and how vapid the upper class is. To illustrate and
capture the essence of these themes, Fitzgerald uses characters Gatsby, who epitomizes the actual
American Dream, and Daisy, who is based on the ideal girl. Yet, as these characters grasp the topics
Fitzgerald wants to convey, there is something inherently like missing from the story as a whole. To
fill this void, Fitzgerald utilizes minor characters as a means to move the plot along, develop
characters further, and build upon the themes present in the novel. One such ... Show more content

The paradox here is that Tom is, in a sense, George himself as Tom's wife, Daisy, is in the process of
being taken away from him.
As seen with the aforementioned example, Wilson also plays a role that involves parallelism. His
situation parallels Tom's, as both have their wives being stolen. His situation parallels Gatsby's in
both their idealization of Myrtle and Daisy, respectively. Both of these patterns serve to emphasize
the character flaws in Tom and Gatsby and ultimately in the superficial lifestyle presented in the
novel.
While all previous cases of Wilson have been employed as a means of further developing characters.
Complementing this role, Wilson also plays a noteworthy part in plot development. Following the
death of Myrtle, who Daisy, in fact, killed, Wilson learns of Myrtle's affair. However, through his
own odd logic, Wilson comes to believe that Myrtle was running out to see her lover, when in fact
she was running away from Wilson himself.

remember her name. Why can't I remember her name? It's been echoing in my head all day, it
couldn't have just disappeared. My heart is beating so fast at trying to remember that I feel like I'm
going to have a heart attack. So I stop trying to remember and my heart goes back to normal. This
day just keeps getting weirder. I begin to think that I'm dreaming so I try to go back to sleep. When I
open my eyes, another note is taped to my mirror. It says "Remember" in forbidden colors and my
heart starts to beat even faster. Covering my eyes from the notes, I cower on my

Short Story: Ina
To see her mother so distraught moved Audra, despite all the woman had done (or had not done).
However, to trust Ina straight away would be fooling. Audra developed a plan, a test of sorts. "I have
two options for you," said Audra. "One, you may have as much money as you need to purchase a
nice parcel of land in the kingdom and pay for a household staff. You'll live comfortably and your
needs will be cared for." "The other option is that you may live here in one of the storage huts next
to the castle; I'll see to it that it's cleared. There's a hearth inside and a hob, and enough room for a
bed and a writing desk. You may work as a scribe to earn your keep and are welcome to take meals
in the castle. If you truly want to stay close to me..." "Yes," answered Ina immediately, looking up
and wiping the tears ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But any time I want to leave, I will." "That's fair." Ina took a tiny sip if tea. "My marriage to your
father was never a happy one, not even from the start. But when you were born, years after we'd
wed, I was thrilled. I had a little girl." Audra's eyes burned with tears, but she held them back. She
could not picture her mother ever wanting a child. "But your father... he was cruel. You didn't know
this, but he used to beat me, Audra. And when you were a baby and a young child, he grew furious
about how much attention I paid. You. He started to hit me more, and when he threatened to turn on
you... gave up. He broke me. I forced myself to care less so he would not hurt you. And eventually,
our relationship was so distant and fractured, I felt there was nothing I could do." Audra was
rendered speechless. She had not known any of this. "Do you remember any of the old times,
Audra? When you were little and I used to take you out in to the mud to play?" Ina scoffed and
peered into her mug. "How could you? You were only two." "Why didn't we leave?" whispered
Audra. "Why didn't you take me

The Great Gatsby- Color Symbolism
The Power of Color Colors are used many different ways by many different people, but are used
mainly as a reflection of the way one feels or his or her own personality. This idea is depicted
through the different characters created in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, set in the post–
World War I era. The novel evinces the major themes through the use and explanation of many
diverse colors. Jay Gatsby, the most significant character in the story, leads a very materialistic
lifestyle. Hoping to gain back his old love, Daisy, Gatsby uses his money to impress her, hopefully
leading to their settling down together. Daisy's second cousin once removed, Nick Carraway, is the
link that helps to connect Gatsby and Daisy. Nick "deliberately ... Show more content on

Caught in the romantic atmosphere of the night, Nick puts "[his] arm around Jordan's golden
shoulder" (Fitzgerald 79). Both description serve to symbolize the fact that she is happy and quite
valuable, as of now, to Nick. While gold and silver are two valuable colors to the characters, gray
symbolizes the corruption behind the money. One depressing color that is quite significant to the
story happens to be the very dull gray. Gray represents the neutral, dull and corrupt society that
resides in America. It is seen, through some of the structures, that corruption has made a big impact
on everyone surrounding them. One such structure, that is only mentioned briefly, is the villages in
France. When Nick first meets and talks to Gatsby, they bring up how both men look familiar to one
another. Ironically, they both took part in some section of World War I, Gatsby, in the "ninth
machine–gun battalion," and Nick, in the "Seventh Infantry" (Fitzgerald 47). During the quick
recapitulation of the war, "[they] talked for a moment about some wet, gray little villages in France"
(Fitzgerald 47). These villages represent the corruption and destruction that the war has brought to
the people and society of France. Another gray structure is the windows at Gatsby house. Even
though Gatsby is a man of money and success, "the gray windows" on his home signify that this
happiness is just a facade, and that in reality, there is much fraudulence hidden within Gatsby

Essay on Ode to a Nightingale and Two Look at Two
Ode to a Nightingale and Two Look at Two
In "Ode to a Nightingale" and "Two Look at Two", both poems tells of an experience in which the
human characters encounters animals in the poems, the experiences are handled quite differently in
the two poems.
In "Ode to a Nightingale", Keats often express his sad feelings and uses the Nightingale and portray
it as some sort of a god or peaceful symbol. As the poem started off with Keats expressing how
drunk the character was and that as if he has taken some drugs – hemlock, and that he wanted so
much to drink more so that he can enter this world in which this Nightingale is in.
Keats shows a kind of experience that is not very realistic / not real, or another word – like a dream,
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Away! For I will fly to thee,
Not charioted by Bacchus and his pards,
But on the viewless wings of Poesy."
He adds to this, as he wants to escape with the Nightingale.
Comparing this with "Two Look at Two" Keats rather imagines and let the character fly away like in
a dream, but in "Two Look at Two" Frost uses personification to make the "doe" and the "buck" acts
like a person, and although they don't actually talk, Frost adds some sort of thinking and speech for
them from him. This can be seen on the following lines:
"She seemed to think that two thus they were safe.
Then, as if they were something that, through strange,
She could not trouble her mind with too long,
She sighed and passed unscared along the wall."
Another better example is when Frost actually makes the buck speaks later on in the poem:
"Why don't you make some motion?
Or give sign of life? Because you can't.
I doubt as if you're as living as you look."
Here Frost has turned this experience or confrontation with the buck into like a conversation.
And looking back at Keats's Nightingale poem, Keats does not show as much signs of
personification as Frost has, and in Frost's poem, the experience with the animal in this poem is not
as relaxing as it is in
Keats, as the scenarios tell us that it is dark, and the surrounding is rough, with rock and washout,
and unsafe in darkness, and then as the characters meets these animals, the

Causes Of The Birmingham Bombing

  • 1. Causes Of The Birmingham Bombing One of the most remarkable events during the Civil Rights Movement was the Birmingham Church Bombing. This event took place on an early Sunday morning in 1963, just before the early service started at the Sixteenth Street Baptist church in Birmingham, Alabama. Nineteen sticks of dynamite had been placed beneath the church steps in the basement below; as a result, four young African American girls were tragically killed and others were severely injured (Dabkowski 1). The malevolent "Klu Klux Klan" was to blame for this horrific event. It was an act of pure evil and racism against African Americans. This tragedy left many African Americans heartbroken and angry with the US government. Between the mourning for the young lives lost and the frustration that the African Americans felt as second–class citizens, this event left a devastating mark in the Civil Rights Movement. On the morning of September 15, 1963, the devastating event known as the Birmingham Bombing took place. Eleven–year–old Sarah Collins and her fourteen–year–old sister, Addie Mae Collins had decided to hide out in the ladies' room, which was in the church's basement (Dabkowski 1). Shortly after, three other young girls joined them around 10:15 in the morning. Cynthia Wesley, Carol Denise McNair, and Carole Robertson had no idea what they were in for by joining the two sisters, instead of staying in Sunday school. After a few minutes of playing, as Addie Mae Collins reached out to tie a sash on McNair's dress, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Adam and Eve are said to have been the first social group. Social groups are defined as having two or more people interact and identify with one another. Some social groups include but are not limited to; the handicap, the homeless, the poor, the wealthy, the powerful, different religious groups, different races and even sexual orientation. There are several reasons why people join social groups. Most people join social groups because there are many benefits for belonging to a group. Granted, we have come a long way, but there are still many people who are a long way from changing their attitudes towards them. "On March 3, 1991, Rodney King was the driver of a car in Los Angeles, California. The driver didn't stop when signaled by a police car behind him, but increased his speed. When police finally stopped the car, they delivered 56 baton blows and six kicks to King, in a period of two minutes, producing 11 skull fractures, brain damage, and kidney damage. Unaware that the incident had been videotaped, the police officers filed inaccurate reports, not mentioning the fact that Rodney King was left with head wounds. On March 15, 1991, four police officers were arraigned on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and use of excessive force" (Mike Lepore). This event may have lead to the bad attitudes towards authority, particularly against the police. Many African Americans felt that this would not have happened if Rodney King had been white. They believed that the only reason why Rodney King was beaten was because he was an African American. When the four white police officers were acquitted by a white jury selected from the suburbs, thousands of people in South Central Los Angeles responded to the verdict with several days of rioting. The majority of low income families are minorities. Some people who have no jobs and for those who have jobs, their wages are usually very low and they may end up turning to crime and ... • 5. Nineteenth Century Short Stories and the Gothic Genre Essay Nineteenth Century Short Stories and the Gothic Genre The three short stories that I have chosen to compare and contrast are: The Signalman by Charles Dickens, An Arrest by Ambrose Bearcy and Napoleon and the Spectre by Charlotte Brontë. All these stories were completed by the mid to late eighteenth hundreds. The Signalman is set by a railway in Britain, along a lonely stretch of a railway line in a steep cutting. An Arrest is set in America and for the most part in a forest. Napoleon and the Spectre is set in Paris. Gothic genre was one of the leading and most used genres of the nineteenth century and this genre is very prevalent in all three of the stories that I have chosen. The gothic genre originated from South ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The darkness also gives a sense of mystery to the author's writing. 'In the glow of an angry sunset,' the stranger re–visits the line to see the signalman. The word 'angry' is far from comfortable or romantic. This line also gives an eerie feel to the fading light and gives a feel that suggests that something is must and is about to happen that is dark and evil. An Arrest by Ambrose Bearcy is a story of a murderer who was awaiting 'his trial,' escaped by 'knocking down his jailer with an iron bar,' and went into the forest. It was night and the forest in to which, he entered was renowned for being wild and unsafe. He goes for many a mile and some how manages to exit the forest and finds an old road and on the road there stood 'the figure of a man, motionless in the gloom.' The gothic style protrudes from this line of the novel very clearly and adds to the sense of suspense and fear that is plaguing this scene. The fugitive is almost face to face with 'the figure of a man,' and feels he cannot turn his back for fear of being 'filled with buckshot,' so he stood there like a tree. The fugitive is hoping that if he stands still enough he will become a tree and escape this horror. Until the moon 'sailed into a patch of unclouded sky,' 'the haunted man saw the visible embodiment of law lift an arm and point significantly beyond him.' At which 'he ... • 7. The Ballad Of Birmingham There are thousands of poems out there that can touch many different people in many ways. Some poems may go with something that is happening with that person in life or some may even just like the poem in general. The poem, "Ballad of Birmingham," is one of the greatest poems I have ever read. It is telling the story of African American's and what they went through during that time period. There is a very strong historical and social context behind this poem that could really touch everyone. The author who wrote "Ballad of Birmingham" was named Randall. He was born in Washington, D.C on January 14, 1914. He became interested in poetry when he was a little kid and he ended up publishing his first poem which was a sonnet and he won a prize ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Social context also played a role on this poem. The story of the little girls played a big role on the background of this poem. This was a terrible day in history for Americans and African American's and to the families who lost a loved one. There were four little girls who died during the bombing their names were the late Addie Mae Collins, the late Denise McNair, the late Carole Robertson, and the late Cynthia Wesley. When Randall's wrote this poem it was also a tribute to these four little girls that died that day. He did this by telling the story of a nameless mother and daughter that day. Even though in the poem he just focuses on just one little girl that passed that day he is also honoring the other girls who died that day as well. "His omission of names also allows him to represent and remember the anonymous multitude of victims of racism and the civil rights struggle and to remember the families left behind the mourn their dead." "Ballad of Birmingham" is showing the tragic events that happened and it tells about racial tensions. On one of the online databases I found tells the story of racism and how bad it was during that time. A women wrote some songs that describes segregation and the racial tensions that took place during these time periods and how these songs helped people. • 9. The Common Man In Robert Bolt's A Man For All Seasons In the opening lines of A Man for All Seasons by Robert Bolt, the Common Man proclaims, "It is perverse! To start a play made up of Kings and Cardinals in speaking costumes and intellectuals with embroidered mouths, with me" (3). The Common Man cannot believe that Bolt is choosing to start off a play of Kings and Cardinals with a man such as himself. He does not believe he, a Common Man, is worthy of this role. Within these opening lines the reader is faced with a question, why did Bolt chose to allow the Common Man to begin the play? Bolt is attempting to make a point about the presence of ordinariness and conformity, using Kings and Cardinals as an example of characters who attempt to rise above and try to make a difference. To begin, the play opens with a monologue by the Common Man. Bolt introduces the Common Man in the opening lines with a monologue to show that the actions of the Common Man are important to the play. To further justify the Common Mans purpose in the play; Bolt makes the Common Man a narrator for the play. The Common Man takes on roles similar to a narrator by re–explaining scenes and finding ways to engage the audience. Continuing within the first few opening lines, the audience learns about the Common Man's basket of costumes and props that he uses to carry out his various roles in the play, "(Backing towards the basket) Well, for a proposition of my own, I need a costume. (Take out and puts on the coat and hat of Steward) Matthew! The Household of Steward of Sir Thomas More!" (3). This basket introduces not only all the roles the Common Man has throughout the play but it also signifies his importance to the play within just the first few pages. No other character was chosen to play multiple roles in this play. Bolt chose to give the Common Man these extra roles and narrator position because he knew he would be able to conform to such roles. As well as pointing out the Common Man's multitude of roles in the play, Bolt also distinguishes the Common Man's ability to make choices that go against his moral compass in order to stay alive, unlike More. The contrast between More's willingness to die for what he believes in, and the Common Man's unwillingness to stand up for anything at all, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Essay about Sight and Blindness in Oedipus Rex Sight and Blindness in Oedipus Rex Oedipus Rex is a play about the way we blind ourselves to painful truths that we can't bear to see. Physical sight and blindness are used throughout the play, often ironically, as a metaphor for mental sight and blindness. The play ends with the hero Oedipus literally blinding himself to avoid seeing the result of his terrible fate. But as the play demonstrates, Oedipus, the man who killed his father and impregnated his mother, has been blind all along, and is partly responsible for his own blindness. When the play opens, the people of the town are asking Oedipus for help. A curse has been cast upon the city and the only way to remove it, is to find the murderer of the last king, Laios. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is ironic that the one individual, who comes to help the city, is the individual that has been the cause of the curse. Oedipus is the illness. Oedipus and Jocasta both don't want to see the truth. Although it may occur to them at some point, but they don't give it a second thought because they think it is absurd and it isn't possible. "Why should anyone in this world be afraid, since fate rules us and nothing van be forseen? A man should live only for the present day. Have no more fear of sleeping with your mother: How many men, in dreams, have lain with their mothers! No reasonable man is troubled by such things." Jocasta is further from believing than Oedipus, she constantly tells him not to worry about it, don't get worked up, and to just forget what you were told. Oedipus cannot forget what the oracle has said and goes on to pursue the case. Through the course of the play Oedipus is the detective, the judge, and the jury. He investigates, decides a verdict, and carries out his own punishment. When Tiresias arrives at Thebes Oedipus questions him looking for answers. Tiresias is a blind man, who ironically can see the future and truths of people's lives. It is Tiresias who is the first person to tell Oedipus that he has killed his own father. • 13. Fitzgerald’s Use of Color in the Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel, The Great Gatsby, exposes the corruption and greed of the Roaring Twenties. Fitzgerald is able to captivate readers' attentions through his employment of color symbolism. Fitzgerald portrays important messages in the novel by his symbolic use of colors. Colors play an important role in Fitzgerald's descriptions of the lives of Jay Gatsby, Nick Carraway and many of the other characters in the novel. Fitzgerald uses the colors white, yellow, and green to express certain sentiments to the reader, commenting what is going on in the story. Fitzgerald uses the color white to symbolize purity and innocence, while yellow is used to symbolize moral decay, and death. Green is used to represent hope and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While Gatsby attempts to hide his dishonesty, Nick, considers himself "one of the few honest people that I have ever known" (Fitzgerald, 59) and Fitzgerald often describes him as wearing white. The first time he attends one of Gatsby's infamous parties, he wears a white flannel suit. Nick is aware of the importance of this event, being formally invited to one of Gatsby's parties, and wants to project the right image. His white suit emulates honesty and the appearance of being untainted. Similar to white projecting honesty and purity, Fitzgerald also uses it to symbolize perfection. Daisy, always in white, was perfect in Gatsby's eyes. He lived his life around her, in order to reclaim her. Just as Daisy's whiteness symbolized perfection to Gatsby, the white world of the upper class was the epitome of perfection for Myrtle Wilson, Tom's mistress. To Myrtle, the perfect life would be to live like Daisy, to be wealthy. Although she lives in the valley of ashes as the wife of a garage owner, she feels she belongs with the upper class. She stakes claim in high society through Tom, but will never be fully able to gain access to their elite world. Fitzgerald shows her attempt to become "white" through her clothing. When she is first seen in the novel, she is wearing "a spotted dress of dark blue" (Fitzgerald, 25). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Individual Responsibility in Oedipus Rex and A Doll's House In Sophocles' Oedipus Rex and Ibsen's A Doll's House, the main characters – Nora and Oedipus, are both constructed to illustrate flaws in society. Oedipus' psychological evolution sees him begin as an all–powerful, righteous king, who seemingly through no fault of his own murders his father and marries his mother. His evolution ends with his self–blinding, an action which Sophocles' uses to establish the true freedom of the individual before divine authority. In A Doll's House, the development of Nora Helmer leads her from believing that she is happily married to realizing that she is a mere possession for her husband's entertainment. He professes that his spirit grieves for the city, for himself, and for all the people [ln. 76]. He further goes on to say that he has already taken measures to isolate a cure by sending his brother–in–law Creon to the Oracle at Delphi to receive a prophetic vision. The response Creon returns with is that the source of the plague is within Thebes itself, in the form of the murderer of Laius, Thebes' former king. In Ancient Greece, the Oracle was a means by which mankind was able to communicate with the gods. Oedipus' decision to immediately send a messenger (in the form of Creon) to the Oracle is appropriate because since the King was considered to be "first of men," he should therefore be the first to undertake the initiative to contact the gods. This concept of being the only source of hope is re–enforced throughout the play not only by Oedipus' own statements such as "I acted at once" [ln. 81] but also by his anticipation of advice and suggestions.3 In the opening scene, the priest refers to Oedipus as "a man of experience.4" Experience can only be gained by constant action. The importance of this article rests on an emotional plea, which provides the reader with a call for justice to the plight of indigenous people in Canadian society. This rhetorical device is part of the pathos of Giangrande's (1990) article that evokes sadness and pity in the way that white Canadian society has alienated and marginalized the First Peoples. More so, the ethos of the article reveals the problem of an apathetic society that has lost the spirit of the 1960s Civil Rights era, which is desperately needed in the 21st century. The loss of cultural respect for the First Peoples reveals the problem of a white hegemonic society as part of a modern trend in political activism. Giangrande (1990) presents these rhetorical devices to show the loss of moral and civic activism to defend the indigenous peoples of Canada. In the documentary, Earthlings, written and produced by Shaun Monson, we get a rude awakening concerning the day–to–day practices of the large industries treatment of animals. This paper will include an explanation behind the argument implied by the writer and defense against the argument being made. For a majority of humans, if we see someone else getting hurt, especially if it is someone we know, it hurts us. We have the ability to understand and share the feelings of one another. This is called empathy (Oxford Dictionary). In the beginning of the documentary, clips recorded from the time of The Holocaust are shown. This is to make us aware of issues faced in the past where some humans were not seen as equal as others. Even though it is obvious that all humans generally experience the same emotions, the emotions within these humans did not matter. Therefore empathy in these times was not shared amongst one another. They use this as a comparison because it is similar to how we are with animals today. The dialogue in this documentary does not state exactly what the argument is, so one must assume. The first assumed premise is, human are animals. Humans do not normally fit the prototype of an animal like a cat or dog, but we are still animals. The second premise is that humans empathize with other humans. When we see someone crying, we mirror their emotions, and we feel the need to cry as well. Listening to music is a way that people relax their soul; it takes them to a different place and away from personal problems. Music is an outlet where there are millions of possibilities within the combinations that you can choose from. Different patterns can be used to accommodate according to how the artist is feeling and what they are going through. When creating music there are an indefinite amount of possibilities for the writer to use, yet the majority of the music we listen to seems to always follow a similar rhythmic pattern. Artists are not taking advantage the privilege they have to express themselves through their creativity. • 33. Essay about Arthurian Legends Effects on English Society What role did the great King Arthur play in the way English Literature is perceived? Did King Arthur honestly exist? "Whether King Arthur existed or not is doubtful. However if King Arthur did exist, then he would have lived sometime between 400 AD and 600 AD, a time of turmoil in Britain following the Roman withdrawl. And a time when written literature did not exist, therefore events during this period are only known about from folklore passed down several generations before being written down, or from modern archeology giving insights from excavations of sites. The Arthurian Legends were an effect of the Romantic Era and resulted in abstract thinking, as well as the arts including music, painting, poetry, and writing. The birth of the Arthurian Legends came from Celtic mythology and medieval romance, while the existence of magic confirms the conception of artistic intellect. Whether or not King Arthur truly existed, his influence dramatically changed the English society and English Literature to its current form (Arthurian Legends Vol. 1). The Arthurian Legend is seen to be extremely influential in benefitting the English people during the Romantic Era. Even if King Arthur is a fictional character of myth and legend in England, his childhood, countless glories and achievements as the king of Camelot, and the final down fall of his strong empire validated his importance to English literature. Proof of King Arthur's existence would possibly solidify the impact he had on the English culture (Arthurian Legends Vol. 1). The early childhood of King Arthur seems to be the foundation of the epic journey of his life. Even though his achievements as a child were brief, they were extremely important to King Arthur's outlook on life, as well as character. The Shawshank Redemption is done in chronological order, but there are some parts when the characters flash back to earlier times in their live so you can understand what is happening in the film. This is done so the viewer still has an easy way to follow the movie. The characters of the film face both internal and external conflict. The internal conflict is should I continue this life when I know I am innocent, and the external conflict is from the prison, the prisoners, and the prison staff. The film does contain symbolism. An example of the symbolism is when the warden learns of his fate and his last judgment by reading the morning newspaper of himself and the prison being corrupt. Additionally, symbolism is used with the holy bible the warden reads; when he finds the hammer that Andy uses to dig out of the prison. There is a passage from Exodus that is used to symbolize the warden's salvation and Andy's escape. Also, there is a metaphor that I remember and it happens when the librarian (Brooks Hatlen) is freed from jail and he takes his own life. But I would also argue that she entailed evil to fuel her sleeping ambition that would make her nemesis, her mental collapse, fully justified. Lady Macbeth's role as a supporting wife at the start of the play exceeds the duties of a 'normal' wife. She is the 'Eve' to Macbeth's 'Adam' and is tempted. Although I have expressed unsympathetic views about Lady Macbeth, I do feel that a certain amount of sympathy arises from Act 5 Scene 1, which tends to hide her previous evil deeds. Lady Macbeth has not been seen by the audience for some time, this is because Macbeth has shut her out of his life and she has become isolated and lonely. Lady Macbeth's mental collapse is caused by her acknowledgement of her share of guilt and is expressed by images of Duncan's blood, "...will these hands ne'er be clean?..." This is also a contrast to her belief that water cleanses the conscience of any guilt. Lady Macbeth's mental collapse reinforces the idea of Scotland being diseased under Macbeth's reign and because he was not put their by divine right he cannot cure her. Lady Macbeth's role as a supporting wife resurfaces again in scene 5. She is now afraid of the dark, which is in contrasts to her earlier wishes for darkness to conceal the murder. Sia begins building her credibility by sharing personal accomplishments as she enters the music scene, then goes on to cite convincing personal stories, and successfully employs emotional appeals through her music debut; however, her dramatic entrance leaves you wondering whether her attempt to appeal to listeners attention weakens her credibility as an artist. Throughout her era of new music, Sia uses strong appeals to logos, with many facts and logical progression of ideas. She gives them facts of her past that bring them to like her even more, going on to reveal that she's written number one hits sung by other artists. On the cover of a billboard magazine Sia has a paper bag on her head with a message written on it saying, "This artist is responsible for over twelve million track sales, has a new single on the hunger games soundtrack, and doesn't want to be famous..." • 45. Rhetorical Analysis Of A Letter From Birmingham Jail Carole De La Fuente Kean ENG 121–141 Oct 24th, 2017 A Letter from Birmingham Jail Rhetorical Analysis A Letter from Birmingham Jail written by Martin Luther King Jr. was a defence strategy of nonviolent resistance to racism. The Birmingham campaign commenced on April 3rd of 1963, it was a march coordinated to protest against racism and racial segregation in Birmingham, Alabama. The campaign was entirely nonviolent and was coordinated by the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights including Dr. King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference. On April 10th, Judge Jenkins issued a blanket injunction going against "parading, demonstrating, boycotting, and trespassing." Leaders of these two campaigns said they were going to disobey this rule they were given. A few days later on April 12th, Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested along with other activist leaders. Once Dr. King arrived to Birmingham jail, he was faced with difficult conditions. An ally of his sneaked in a newspaper that was published on April 12th. There was a statement written by eight clergymen called "A Call for Unity," which went against what King and his campaign were implementing on the streets of Birmingham, Alabama. The statement enraged Dr. King to write a response. Dr. King used logos in the letter to help support his counter argument against the clergymen. "In spite of my shattered dreams.." King wrote, "... I came to Birmingham with the hope that the religious leadership... Would see the justice." By stating this, he showed pathos. King put into words that through the process to end segregation, there was hardship along the way, and dreams were destroyed by other people's actions who did not display care towards the black community. The city of Birmingham pervaded with brutal police officers, unjust courts, and bombings of Negro homes that were unsolved. He is being knowledgeable, moral and reasonable. He is being reasonable when he says that there is injustice everywhere, not just the South. He is knowledgable when the clergymen told him he needs to wait and responds with that he has waited for about three hundred and forty years. He finally shows morality when Dr. King wrote "...so we must see the need for nonviolent gadflies to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Zachary Hayes British Literature I Dr. Dunnum 10/23/15 "In a feudal system, a peasant or worker known as a vassal received a piece of land in return for serving a lord or king, especially during times of war." (Feudal System) During the Middle Ages and other parts of modern Europe, through texts, we can see how feudalism played a major role with state and the government. Kings looked at it as "higher authority" and have more control over the knights, nobles, and peasants that lie within that system. Though kings have more of a physical control throughout these texts, I believe the queens have more manipulative power. In Marie de France's short story, "Lanval", it is obvious that the state was in control of many lives. Throughout the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She sat near him, she called him over, She spoke as her heart would move her: 'Lanval, I really do respect you, I really care, I really love, And you can have all my love." ("France" 393–399) The queen began to accuse Lanval of being gay because he had never had a woman show him pleasure. Suddenly, Lanval admits that he is in love with someone else who would be far better than the queen herself, which sent the queen away crying. Soon afterwards, Lanval was commanded to appear in court without delay. The Queen's assertive power was shown by her ability to punish innocent people, meaning she obviously got what she wanted regardless of whether it was right or not. The negative characteristics of the king are shown in "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight". The descriptions the author uses to describe King Author and the descriptions used at the end of the story to describe the positive characteristics of Bertilak de Hautdesert. Larc Blackwood Persuasive Speech A WORLD ON FIRE Prologe "Good afternoon fellow leaders!" projected Larc Blackwood, "I have all called you here today to propose an idea that can truly end all wars and national conflicts throughout the world!" The other politicians and world leaders snickered and whispered their doubts to one another, a few hopeful youths always proposed a "way to end all conflicts" a few times a year but they were always cast aside as futile attempt at something that could never be obtained, true world peace. "And how do we know your idea will be so different from all the others we've heard?" asked Wilson Brightland. A sudden hush fell across the room, Wilson Brightland was the leader of one of the most powerful nations known as Ultras and his voice carried much influence. He was six and half feet and 250 pounds of pure muscle and raw leadership, he rose through his countries ranks with prejudice speed and assumed the High Graceship when he was only 28, the youngest to have ever accomplished such a fet. His glare made Blackwood hesitate, but he carried on in his usual commanding manner, "I propose that rather than waring with each other and progressively making ourselves weaker, we all unite under one common banner, with one king chosen by the council, to rule over the world as one unified nation!" Precipitation only falls as snow when the air temperature is 32 degrees Fahrenheit or below. If you want bigger snowflakes then you need more moisture in the air, if you want smaller snowflakes you need less moisture and more freezing temperature. Another important factor needed for snowflakes is ground temperature. Ground temperature is needed to be able to determine whether the snowflakes will stick to the ground. The day before his speech Martin Luther King Jr., Wyatt Walker and others, helped Martin get in a state to write his speech. Wyatt Walker actually advised Martin to not use his "I Have a Dream" speech. Wyatt's explanation was that King had used, "I Have a Dream" in many other speeches prior to this one, he thought it would be to much. Martin agreed he knew this speech had to be different. This was the first time he was going to speak to a whole civil rights group. The event was a big deal because it was going to be shown on all three television networks live. Kings staff offered multiple different opinions and suggestions about the speech. Yet, King was still not sure what he was going to do. He told his staff " I am now going upstairs to my room to counsel with my Lord."(Younge ) King finished the speech, but "I Have a Dream" was not in the speech. So as King began to say his speech he began to rally the a people, and then one of King's friends Mahalia Jackson cried out from behind him,"Tell'em about the dream, Martin."(Younge ) Mahalia was a very close relationship with King she was the one he would call for some "gospel musical therapy." Martin Luther King and Eugene Patterson both delivered eulogies after the deaths of Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Cynthia Diane Wesley, and Carole Robertson. The death of these children were not in vain. They aided Congress to pass the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Both eulogies have sentiments of hope and responsibility and use repetition. Wealth can be such a strong impact on someone that can determine whether they're selfish or a given person. Wealth can definitely be overpowering and misleading, which could portray their true identity. In the historical fiction novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, it shows us how misleading wealth can be in a person's life. One of the reasons why wealth is involved in Gatsby's life is because he is spending his own money on things that aren't necessary. This example shows how Tom and Daisy are manipulated into thinking that money can solve any issue. Furthermore, Wealth can make someone feel determined. Gatsby was determined to get Daisy, and the only way to get Daisy was to become wealthy. To represent Gatsby's interception of becoming wealthy, this quote symbolizes his determination and beginning to a happier life; "To Young Gatz, resting on his oars and looking up at the railed deck, that yacht represented all the beauty and glamour in the world" (100). This quote accurately describes Gatsby's desires for wealth and his material items. The yacht, which belonged to Dan Cody, was the embodiment of wealth and fortune Gatsby was not familiar with. He lived a low life of poverty, and this was his goal that he wanted to reach. Dan took Gatsby with him and adopted him in a way, which gave Gatsby his start to fortune. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is a superbly written and an intrinsically captivating novel that deals with the decline of the American Dream and how vapid the upper class is. To illustrate and capture the essence of these themes, Fitzgerald uses characters Gatsby, who epitomizes the actual American Dream, and Daisy, who is based on the ideal girl. Yet, as these characters grasp the topics Fitzgerald wants to convey, there is something inherently like missing from the story as a whole. To fill this void, Fitzgerald utilizes minor characters as a means to move the plot along, develop characters further, and build upon the themes present in the novel. One such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The paradox here is that Tom is, in a sense, George himself as Tom's wife, Daisy, is in the process of being taken away from him. As seen with the aforementioned example, Wilson also plays a role that involves parallelism. His situation parallels Tom's, as both have their wives being stolen. His situation parallels Gatsby's in both their idealization of Myrtle and Daisy, respectively. Both of these patterns serve to emphasize the character flaws in Tom and Gatsby and ultimately in the superficial lifestyle presented in the novel. While all previous cases of Wilson have been employed as a means of further developing characters. Complementing this role, Wilson also plays a noteworthy part in plot development. Following the death of Myrtle, who Daisy, in fact, killed, Wilson learns of Myrtle's affair. The Great Gatsby- Color Symbolism The Power of Color Colors are used many different ways by many different people, but are used mainly as a reflection of the way one feels or his or her own personality. This idea is depicted through the different characters created in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, set in the post– World War I era. The novel evinces the major themes through the use and explanation of many diverse colors. Jay Gatsby, the most significant character in the story, leads a very materialistic lifestyle. While gold and silver are two valuable colors to the characters, gray symbolizes the corruption behind the money. One depressing color that is quite significant to the story happens to be the very dull gray. Gray represents the neutral, dull and corrupt society that resides in America. It is seen, through some of the structures, that corruption has made a big impact on everyone surrounding them. One such structure, that is only mentioned briefly, is the villages in France. When Nick first meets and talks to Gatsby, they bring up how both men look familiar to one another. Ironically, they both took part in some section of World War I, Gatsby, in the "ninth machine–gun battalion," and Nick, in the "Seventh Infantry" (Fitzgerald 47). During the quick recapitulation of the war, "[they] talked for a moment about some wet, gray little villages in France" (Fitzgerald 47). These villages represent the corruption and destruction that the war has brought to the people and society of France. Another gray structure is the windows at Gatsby house. Even though Gatsby is a man of money and success, "the gray windows" on his home signify that this happiness is just a facade, and that in reality, there is much fraudulence hidden within Gatsby ...
