Eminem was born in Missouri but spent his early life moving between homes in Detroit, where he was bullied for being one of the few white kids. He began battling other rappers as a teenager and released his debut album "Infinite" in 1996 to little success. This led to a suicide attempt and the creation of his alter ego Slim Shady, who enjoyed drugs, violence, and misogyny. In 1997, he gained fame after Dr. Dre discovered his Slim Shady EP and helped launch his breakthrough album "The Slim Shady LP" in 1999, which was hugely successful despite its controversial lyrics. Eminem went on to release several multi-platinum albums though he took a

The moment, would you capture it? Or just
Let it slip?

Marshall Bruce Mathers, better
known as Eminem is a name you
have probably heard once or twice.
He is listened to by teenagers across
the world and has won numerous
awards, such as multiple Grammys
and even and Oscar at one point, but
where did that all start? Well
Eminem was born in St joseph,
Missouri, to Debbie Mathers.
However they didn’t stay there long
and Eminem (Known as Marshall)
spent
The first years of his life going from
house to house before they settled
in a lower class neighbourhood in
Detroit, Michigan. The primarily
black neighbourhood caused
Marshall to be bullied extensively
and also introduced him to hip hop
through rapper Ice T
At age 13 he meant his future wife,
(and source of many diss songs) Kim,
who had runaway from home.
Marshall was somewhat of a loner
but still snuck into a nearby school
and did rap battles with his friend
and soon fellow rapper “Proof”. His
mother also frequently kicked him
out of the house. In 1995, Kim gave
birth to the couples first daughter,
Hailie. Marshall and Kim lived with
Debbie till 1997. In 1996, he made
his debut album “Infinite” which
flopped.
All of this culminated into a suicide
attempt in early 1997. He was
thrown out of his by his mother,
round the release of his EP, the slim
shady EP. His alter ego, slim shady is
a violent thug who enjoys drugs and
rape and came from Marshalls dark
Thoughts after his failure
with Infinite. In 1997, he
attended the Los Angeles rap
Olympics and came 2nd. This
is where Marshalls life
changed forever when record
producer and former NWA
member Dr Dre found the
Slim Shady EP and despite
Marshalls colour, helped
Marshall launch the Slim
Shady LP, which was the
bestselling album of 1999.
Marshall, now known as
Eminem, wrote violent songs
about his wife Kim, his mother
Debbie and old bullies, which
attracted lawsuits and even
got temporarily banned from
Canada
However, his albums The Marshall
Mathers LP, The Eminem Show and
Encore all became triple platinum and
put Eminem on top of the world.
However in 2005, after the murder of
his friend Proof, a feud with rapper ja
rule and after picking up a drug
addiction from filming his film 8 mile
(which won best original song at the
Oscars), and his personal life catching
up to him, Eminem went on hiatus in
2005 after releasing a greatest hits
album, Curtain Call: The Hits.
He returned in 2009 with the albums,
Relapse and Recovery and his latest
album: The Marshall Mathers LP 2 is
the bestselling album of 2013,
Needless to say Eminem has definitely
recovered, Still waiting on that 9th
album Em.

Editor's Notes
I would have liked to have seen this article laid out at a dps, its difficult to mark without seeing how it really should look.
A good dominant image, and on its own it does draw the reader in, but needs a caption to anchor to the main body of text. The placement of lyrics would need to be moved, doesn’t really work there – perhaps the background could have been lyrics of his songs throughout the 2 decades?! But not to distracting from the overall image.
You are missing folio – page numbers.
The last sentence for each paragraph is too close to the bleedline and you would possibly lose those lines.
Your columns do look disconnected, and should flow better, if you wanted certain paragraphs to be about a particular topic, just give it a small sub head at the start.
Your language and register if informative and its clear it s subject matter you enjoy, always think about what hardcore fans may already know and give them something new also – great for newbie fans.
Your byline font size is accurate I would like to see this vertically next time and to include photography credits, this can be at the right or left hand side of your page.
Good work with your drop cap that’s tricky to do with PP, you need perhaps a little more work on your intro/kicker – this first paragraph should really sum up the article, but should be intriguing also.
I think for this particular article sub images of concerts, him as a child etc as a polaroid style dotted throughout with captions would have made the page visually stand out more.
D grade, looking forward to seeing your work progress.
