The speaker has over 30 years of teaching mathematics experience at both the high school and college levels. In this presentation, they will discuss how they now use SAGE, a computer algebra system, instead of graphing calculators in their pre-calculus classes. They have been an early adopter of educational technologies and will demonstrate how SAGE allows them to teach pre-calculus concepts more effectively.

Hello and welcome to LIMAÇON 2013! Thank you for coming to my
presentation.
Please allow me to introduce myself. I have taught all levels of Mathematics
at Baldwin Senior High school for 30 years and Nassau Community College
for 20 years. The way I teach math has evolved greatly in the last 5-10 years.
I have “flipped the classroom” and I am doing a lot more “whiteboarding” in
class, for instance. Also, I've been “smartboarding” and “screencasting” for
at least 5 years. I share all my SmartNotes and mp4s with my students on
Edmodo, BlogSpot and Youtube.
I have always been in the forefront when it comes to adopting new and
effective technologies for use inside and outside of my mathematics
classroom. In fact, I was one of the first to promote the use of Graphing
Calculators in all Math and Science classes. I am here today to tell you that
we are in the midst of another revolution in computing technology. These
new computing environments include everything from Computer Algebra
Systems and programming languages to Super Computers and Scientific
Computing.
So, today I will speak about how I use SAGE instead of a Graphing Calculator
in preCalculus class. Let me show you how I use a Computer Algebra System,
such as SAGE, to teach the High School math curriculum.
