“SAGE Advice: Calculus!”
Audience:
Math 11, 12 + College
Description:
Hello and welcome to LIMAÇON 2016! Thank you for coming to my presentation.
Please allow me to introduce myself. I have taught all levels of Mathematics at Baldwin
Senior High school for 32 years and Nassau Community College for 21 years. I've taught
programming since 1975, High School Math, Computer Science & Physics since 1984,
College Math and Computing since 1993, Cluster Programming since 2002 and Scientific
Computing since 2011.
The way I teach math has evolved greatly over the past 10 years. For example, I have
“Flipped the Classroom.” I've also been “SmartBoarding” and “ScreenCasting” for at least 5
years. I share all my SmartNotes and MP4s with my students on Edmodo, BlogSpot and
Youtube.
I have always been in the forefront when it comes to adopting new and effective technologies
for use inside and outside of my mathematics classroom. During the 1990s I was one of the
first to promote the use of Graphing Calculators in all Math and Science classes. However, I
am here today to tell you that we are in the midst of another revolution in computing
technology. These new computing environments include everything from Computer Algebra
Systems and programming languages to Super Computers and Scientific Computing.
So, today I will speak about how I use SAGE instead of a Graphing Calculator in Calculus
class. Let me show you how I use a Computer Algebra System, such as SAGE, to teach High
School and College Math curricula.
Sincerely,
A. Jorge García
