The document discusses strategies for attracting an audience to a dance music magazine. It analyzed a similar magazine called Mixmag to see what attracted readers. Research showed the target audience preferred an even balance of pictures and text. Bright colors, lighting effects, and clubbing atmospheres were used to represent the dance genre. A survey asked the target age range what they wanted, which informed the strategies. These included using bright colors, young attractive models from the genre, a mix of male and female artists, and incorporating technology through extra online content and chances to win the latest tech.
1. How did you attract/ address your
audience?
Question 2:
2. Firstly…
I had to do research into other existing magazines within my
genre and what attracted people to them.
There was very little choice and the main other magazine that I
found was ‘Mixmag’, I looked at the style of ‘Mixmag’ and how
they laid it out and took inspiration from this.
One of things I noticed was the ratio of pictures to text. They had
a lot of pictures but didn’t want to compromise the amount of text
so they used a small font often and either had one large image
or several smaller images. The balance between image and text
was fairly even which was what my research showed my target
audience would prefer.
3. I also saw that they used a lot of bright colours to
get the Dance genre across and bright lighting
effects used to create a clubbing atmosphere. The
background would often be dark and then the text
and images light to create contrast and further the
clubbing atmosphere
On the front cover they would use bright colours to
attract and often use a model not an actual artist
within that genre to represent the reader and what
they would enjoy.
4. Research
I did a questionnaire on survey monkey asking my target
audience what they preferred and would want from a
magazine.
I shared it on Facebook so that my friends could answer
and I know that this isn’t an accurate representation of the
whole population but was aimed at my target age range
which I had in mind.
My research showed that the Dance genre was popular but
still would be a fairly niche audience. It is also a genre that
doesn’t have much choice magazine wise but that is
growing in popularity.
5. In order to attract my audience I
will use a variety of techniques…
6. Colours
• Colours will be a big part of my magazine as they help to
represent the genre clearly and bright colours are a big
part of the clubbing scene.
• I used bright colours throughout on the front cover,
contents page and in the article. This will make it eye
catching for my target audience as they are fairly young
so this would be important to them.
For example on the front cover I
used neon colours and paint on the
models face to make it stand out
and the background was quite dark
but with lens flares that stood out
on it.
7. Photos
• In the images I have young and
attractive people who represent the
target audience.
• They would also be well known
people from the genre that they
would recognise and be encouraged
to buy the magazine if they are fans
of theirs
• They will have direct mode of
address, so that the readers can feel
a connection with the audience.
• There would be a mix of female and
male models and artists so that they
can appeal to both genders
8. Technology
My research showed that technology was very important to
my target audience because they are young and interested
in the latest things.
Therefore I would have an online digital copy for download
and throughout my magazine there would be links to extra
content that they can access through QR codes using their
phones.
The website would also be advertised with extra
updateable content that they can view in between releases
of the magazine.
Finally there would be several reviews and chances to win
the latest technology in the magazine.
