2. Codes and Conventions.
▶ Scheduling (the last thing mentioned). Done by a voice over. This is said in
the order of: Title, date, time and then channel. (slogan is less common).
▶ Sound effects. Use correspond to what the narrator is saying.
▶ Snippets of speech from the documentary. (Sections of dialogue from the
interviews).
▶ Music sets the tone for the whole program. Upbeat= positive, dark= negative.
▶ Voice over. Has to speak in standard English. Ask rhetorical questions in order
to gain interest with the audience.
3. Last Chance To See.
▶ Their is a voice over is relevant to the documentary because it is narrated by
Stephen Fry who is in the documentary. It is also in standard English so
people from all over the country can understand it.
▶ The ending is conventional to radio trailers as it has the name of the
documentary, ‘coming soon’ replacing the specific date and time, then the
channel details ‘On BBC 2’.
▶ The sound effects are of sounds of a variety of animals which is relevant to a
documentary about endangered animals.
4. Special Need Pets.
▶ The voice over is in standard English, clear so anyone can understand what is
being said.
▶ The music bed is very low in the background and provides a tone to the
documentary of light hearted because the documentary isn’t a serious
documentary.
▶ The ending is conventional following the title, date and time (Thursday at
9), channel information. Channel 4.
▶ There are quotes from the actual documentary embedded into the radio
advert to give audiences information about what the documentary is about.
▶ The sound effects correspond to what the narrator is saying because the
narrator is talking about animals and the sound effects include sounds from
animal likes pigs.
5. ▶ This is possibly the least conventional radio advert because it challenged one
of the key conventions. Their is no proper music bed, the sound effects do
the same job, the sounds of the wind, rain, etc play throughout the entire of
the radio advert.
▶ The voice over however does follow typical conventions because they speak
in Standard English so everyone around the country can understand what is
being said.
▶ The ending as well is very conventional because it says The weather: A very
British Obsession, coming soon to BBC 4.

6. Storyville.
▶ ‘Storyville, coming soon to BBC 4’ the ending again is conventional to radio
adverts.
▶ There is no voice over until the end, this is unconventional because the
voice over is heard throughout the documentary, however when it is played,
it is a conventional standard english voice.
▶ Both of the dialogue in the advert is snippets from the actual documentary,
this includes a wide range of languages and accents.
▶ The music creates a calm relaxed atmosphere, creating a tone for the actual
documentary.
