In this scene from the popular British soap,
EastEnders, there are many features of
sound that are used. For example, this
scene specifically has a lot of dialogue and
this is where there is a conversation
between two or more people and this type
of sound terminology is very popular in
soaps and film. In this scene, the type of
dialogue that is used is, 3rd person and this
is because characters refer to each as you or would tend to say another character’s name.
Another sound terminology that was included in this scene was, effects and aural landscape.
Aural landscape is used to give the audience a brief idea of the location. For example, there
are distort sounds of cars driving past the house in the back. This can be used to connote
that they are in suburban area. Effects are also used in this scene, because there is knocking
at the door and also when Phil falls to the ground, there is a sound effect used to show, that
his falling caused a noise. Effects are usually added using Foley, which is where sound is
recorded to make the scene more creative and cause tension. This scene also has elements
of silence. For example, after Phil has gone to swing for Jay there is a short moment of
silence. This can be used to imply that something bad has just taken place or that it will lead
to unfortunate events.

In radio shows there also many sounds that
are involved making the radio good. For
example things such as, effects, music,
dialogue and many more sound
terminologies used. Firstly, all radio shows
use music and the music tends to be
playing lightly in the background will the
presenter speakers over it. On this radio
show, music is played in the background,
while the radio presenter is speaking to
create a positive or negative atmosphere
depending on the type of music being played. The BBC also has its own jingle, which is used
to give the radio show its brand. The jingle also helps the listeners help identify the name of
the radio show, which is BBC1 and this is said in the jingle in a low and powerful recorded
voice, which is done by Foley. Phone – INS are also used and the purpose of them is to get
the listeners to interact with the radio presenter. For example, the radio presenter allows
listeners tell them about awkward situations they have been in and these are live calls that
are taking place. Radio shows also consist of news reports. For example, the news reports
during live radio shows, would announced during shorts breaks and would only be the most
recent and important news. The dialogue used in radio shows is mostly second person, as
2. the presenter directs most of his speech at the listeners. For example, he would say things
such as “What are you guys going to do today, because its summer” around “11:20”.2
