Introduction
Do you think obesity is a serious health problem in the U.S.? If you said,
No you are not alone. However, in a nation where the golden arches
of MacDonalds are more easily recognized than those of the Golden Gate
Bridge we should not be surprised. With the fast pace society we live in
and the access and convenience of fast food it is no wonder we grab that
cheeseburger, fries and frosty malt on the way home rather than make or
purchase something more healthy. However, this lifestyle that Americans
have become accustom to is beginning to have significant repercussions.
The CDC (Center for Disease Control) has found that an estimated 61% of
U.S. adults are overweight or obese and perhaps an even scarier fact, that
13% of children and adolescents are seriously overweight. Lets take
some time to evaluate this health concern for ourselves.

2. Task
We are going to create a teen oriented health fair in our classroom. Our
task is to design powerpoint for the health fair that will educate teens
about obesity. We want our powerpoint to be creative, inviting, and
informative. Each group will design their own powerpoint and a
pamphlet, brochure or poster to be displayed during their presentation.
You will also need to develop an interactive component to your
presentation. This may be a demonstration an activity or something else
creative.

Process
You will be working in groups of three to develop your products.
Although the focus of our health fair will be obesity, realize there are many
topics related to and stemming from obesity that can and should be
explored. Therefore, you may want to do some background investigating
before you set your course for this project.
- You and your partners will need to decide on what one
aspect of obesity you are going to
 address.
- Research your topic using the web sites provided below.
- As you research keep a log of the sites you visit.
You will need to evaluate three of the
provided sites and you will need to cite the
information you use appropriately.
- As a team decide how you want to design your
products. Then, once your design plans are set
you will want to divide the work to best use your
time. Remember you will be displaying your
3. products to the class.
- You will be evaluated as a group on your final health fair display.
- You will have two weeks (+ or -) to complete your projects and while
some class time will be used time
is of the essence so please do not waste it.
- Please see the rubric below for specifics on how your work will be
evaluated.

Conclusion
Thank you for a job well done! I am sure that all of the students and
teachers that have visited your booth will rethink about having a fast food
meal for dinner tonight. I also hope that you and your team have a new
or deeper understanding about how important it is to treat your body right!

So lets make a point to think about the little things we do.
