Directions: In the space provided, write the answer that best completes each of the following
statements.
    1. The official name of Georgia’s legislature is the
       Georgia General Assembly.

   2. There are 180 members in the state house of representatives and 56
      members in the state senate.


   3.   Members of the state senate must be 25 at the time of their election.

4. Members ofthe state house of representatives must be 21.

        5.   The presiding officer in the senate is the Lieutenant Governorand the
             presidingofficer in the house is the Speaker of the House.

        6. The legislative committee that handles bills and laws involving funding, budgets, and
        expenditures is the Appropriations Committee.

        7. When the house and the senate adopt, or pass, differing versions of a bill, a
        Conference committee works out the differences between the two versions.
        8. Protections given to citizens accused of crimes, such as the right to a lawyer and the
           right toa speedy trial, are protections known as Due process.

        9.   A serious crime punishable by a year or more in prison, a fine of at least $1000, or
             both iscalled a felony.

        10. Courts that handle cases of persons under the age of seventeen are called
        Juvenile courts.
        11. Courts that hear cases involving the wills of deceased persons are called
        probate courts.
        12. A young person who runs away from home would be considered a
        Unruly juvenile.

        1.   Intake
        2.   Detention
        3.   Formal Hearing
        4.   Sentencing
        5.   Appeal
14. What are some of the rights and responsibilities a student has under school law?
    Students have First Amendment rights (freedom of religion, speech, the
    press, right to assemble, right to petition), Fourth Amendment rights
    (against unreasonable searches and seizures), and Fifth Amendment
    rights (equal protection and due process). Students also have the
    responsibilities of attending school, following reasonable rules and
    regulations, and working with school officials to ensure that the
    environment is safe.
