so far this week we have discussed three types of security: retail, institutional, and industrial. I think that there is a little bit of confusion still about what the differences are between each of these types of security because we are looking for good definitions for institutions and industry. At its most basic level an institution is an organized group working toward a purpose. We can think of institutions as being more broad than retail which is a sales organization for some sort of good. Often when we think of institutions we are thinking about complex organizations such as schools, hospitals, or other non-profit/ non-business type of organizations. However, large service companies (such as Facebook, Microsoft, GEICO) etc. which are not involved in retail sales can be thought of as institutions in the security sense. Question1. How are these three different types of security the same, and how are they different? One issue that comes up a lot in security, and which came up in our discussion the first and second weeks of class, is that of organic versus contract capabilities. For instance, should the military use soldiers to provide security at all U.S. bases or should they contract that out to a firm and let soldiers focus on training for their overseas missions? The same issue comes up with executive protection. question2. Should executive protection be contracted out to a third party provider, or should it be an organic capability? What are the advantages to contracting executive protection to an outside provider? .

The case I chose to focus on for this discussion was Sonia's hard time adjusting to school. From the description, I have an understanding that Sonia is struggling in school due to a cultural/language barrier that sets her apart from her peers, as well as, having a hard time being away from her mother, or "comfort zone", which leads me to believe that she is also having trouble, and/or experiencing separation anxiety from the one's she is comfortable and feels safe with when going into a new environment or around other people.
While Sonia is in school, she is around new people and new influences. The reading acknowledges that, "peer acceptance during middle childhood plays an important role in a child's upbringing and self-esteem" (Wong et al., 2021). Sonia is nine years old, and is in that stage of development where making friends and building connections is prominent, though with some of the challenges she has (language barrier), this could impact her ability to follow through with establishing these key relationships in her early adolescent years. Other challenges that Sonia may struggle with is the feeling of isolation from feeling and/or being different than others, experiencing high levels of stress, and with how her situation is, she could potentially face the problem of struggling with self-identity or self-esteem issues. As far as stress goes, the textbook states that, "chronic stress has been found to significantly affect cognitive development by interrupting prefrontal cortex functioning--stress in children and adolescents can result in higher levels of depression and a lower sense of self-worth" (Wong et al., 2021).
For psychosocial conflicts, based on Sonia's age, this places her in Erik Erikson's "Industry vs Inferiority" stage of development. "Industry" is described as children during this stage, developing a sense of competence with learning new skills and tasks (which is heavily influenced in a school type of environment). "Inferiority" is described when a child lacks confidence in doing certain tasks, which can result in negative feelings the child could experience. While Sonia is embracing this stage of development, she will learn to grow and will be challenged in certain ways because of her unique differences. What happens when the religious af�iliations of employees become potentially at odds
with company policies and practices? Two stories highlight the need for careful
negotiation or con�lict resolution.
The �irst occurred in 2015 at a Cargill manufacturing facility in Fort Morgan, Colorado.
Cargill employed more than 150 workers who practiced Islam. A group of 11 workers of
Somalian descent asked if they could have access to a "prayer and re�lection" room within
the plant for a common time of prayer. Some disagreement exists regarding the manner in
which management dealt with the request.
One employee stated that the immediate supervisor asked them to break in smaller
groups so that they would not disrupt production on the assembly line. Another claimed
that higher level managers decided to reduce the number of prayer breaks as a response
to the request. In either case, the Somali workers prayed in small groups on the day of
their request, and at the end of their shift, 10 of the 11 workers quit.
Soon after, 150 Muslim workers missed work for three days in protest. The management
team at Cargill dismissed them for failing to inform the company that they would be
absent. Following the incident, nearly 130 of the �ired workers �iled complaints with the
U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commi.

The best action is that which is supported by the best possible reasons, as opposed to acting upon emotion, some already existing morality or without deliberation. The second feature is commitment to impartiality. This involves putting into consideration the interests of all in equal measure, rather than being self-interested. IT HARDLY IS NEWS THAT THE EMERGENCE IN THE ASIA/PACIFIC REGION of multinational low-cost carriers modeled on the leading LCCs in North America and Europe has transformed and reinvigorated the inter-Asia travel market. But while most of the attention is focused on the impact these upstarts are having on major network/flag carriers, a less public battle is going on as Asia's niche airlines - SilkAir, Nok Air and Bangkok Airways, for example - find their space being challenged by the low-fare wave as well.
Neither full-service nor LCC, this band of carriers has fulfilled a role somewhat analogous to the holiday and charter airline segment in Europe, albeit on a much smaller scale. Some are standalone entities plying short-haul routes with turboprop and small jet aircraft. Others exist as part of a major airline organization, flying the last leg of a transcontinental journey into an Asia/Pacific vacation destination. The question is how long they can continue in their role in the face of changing travel patterns and consumer behavior brought on by LCCs, the Internet and rising GDPs.
A key year for them is 2015, when Southeast Asia's Open Sky Agreement comes into effect, allowing unlimited flights to all 10 ASEAN members: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Any protections they enjoy from restrictive bilaterals will disappear and they will be fully exposed to aggressive competition from today's batch of LCCs and future new entrants.
Perhaps Thailand presents the best microcosm of the wider challenges facing niche airlines. When Thai AirAsia was launched in 2004 with the political support of the government, Thai International Airways, itself government-owned, responded by establishing Nok Air, in which it holds a controlling 39% stake. But as so often happens in such situations (think
British Airways
and Go or Continental Airlines and CALite), Nok Air and its parent were more at war with each other than with the new entrant. While Thai AirAsia has come from nothing to operate a fleet of 19 new Airbus A320s serving 24 domestic and international destinations, Nok Air has just 10 aging Boeing 737-400s and two ATR 72s serving 17 domestic points.
The future for Nok may be a bit rosier. CEO Patee Sarasin told eTN in 2009 that the airline, which at the time was carrying fewer than 2 million passengers a year, had "buried the hatchet" with its owner and the two now had common goals. "It is true that we had difficulties in the past to cooperate as we lacked a common vision," he said. "We are now ready to cooperate again."
Prior to the makeup, Thai was considering selling its interest in Nok or assuming 100% control to make it a more effective competitor to Thai AirAsia, although in actuality a takeover might not have been possible owing to the refusal of other shareholders to sell. The unique characteristic of how these people are passionately dedicated to their customs and celebrations is second to none. In contrast, our Great American Melting pot has National Holidays and other celebrations that are carried out, yet we all have our own twist on how or why we celebrate. Some people do not celebrate certain holidays and have personal reasons for or against recognizing and participating in certain National Holidays. Our traditions are no less firm and many of us are very passionate about our celebrations, yet the unity and sameness of how customs are practiced is varied. This parallels with the very first forum we had on Spanish greetings. We discussed how the Spanish greet, and how they all greet this same way. Every time. Again, here in the US, we have greeting customs that vary from a handshake to a pat on the back, with or without eye contact, sometimes non-verbal, sometimes with no touching at all, and other times with a nod and smile.
Greetings and celebrations in the US vs other countries are indicators of how diverse our population is. Americans have varied beliefs, religions, practices and customs. We often celebrate similar holidays but for different reasons and in different ways. The "New World" is certainly a melting pot, and is different from countries like Spain where traditions run deep and are nationally celebrated, customs are very similarly practiced and generally done so with one same common reason and purpose. There is no right or wrong in this contrast, just a difference that points to our unique patchwork that is "American life."

Under this provision, persons detained by the government are entitled to a judicial hearing to determine if there is any legal basis for their detention. Some legal commentators refer to the right of habeas corpus as the "great writ of liberty" because it is a prisoner's ultimate recourse to an impartial judge who can review the possibility that he is being held illegally by the executive (e.g., the police or the military). In nations that do not honor habeas corpus, people simply disappear into prisons without ever having their day in court.
Several controversial Supreme Court cases have come out of Gitmo. One fundamental question that has been debated, but not clearly resolved, is to what extent the war on terror justifies the President's indefinite detention of enemy combatants without the possibility of the minimal judicial review protected by habeas corpus? Another issue in the debate is to what extent Congress must clearly authorize the President to conduct extra-judicial detentions in order for them to be legal? In 2008, the Supreme Court’s decision in
Boumediene v. Bush
offered some answers to these questions. However, the deeply divided 5-4 Court and the likelihood of the protracted nature of the war on terror suggest that debate around these important questions will continue. IT HARDLY IS NEWS THAT THE EMERGENCE IN THE ASIA/PACIFIC REGION of multinational low-cost carriers modeled on the leading LCCs in North America and Europe has transformed and reinvigorated the inter-Asia travel market. But while most of the attention is focused on the impact these upstarts are having on major network/flag carriers, a less public battle is going on as Asia's niche airlines - SilkAir, Nok Air and Bangkok Airways, for example - find their space being challenged by the low-fare wave as well.
Neither full-service nor LCC, this band of carriers has fulfilled a role somewhat analogous to the holiday and charter airline segment in Europe, albeit on a much smaller scale. Some are standalone entities plying short-haul routes with turboprop and small jet aircraft. Others exist as part of a major airline organization, flying the last leg of a transcontinental journey into an Asia/Pacific vacation destination. The question is how long they can continue in their role in the face of changing travel patterns and consumer behavior brought on by LCCs, the Internet and rising GDPs.
A key year for them is 2015, when Southeast Asia's Open Sky Agreement comes into effect, allowing unlimited flights to all 10 ASEAN members: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Any protections they enjoy from restrictive bilaterals will disappear and they will be fully exposed to aggressive competition from today's batch of LCCs and future new entrants.
Perhaps Thailand presents the best microcosm of the wider challenges facing niche airlines. When Thai AirAsia was launched in 2004 with the political support of the government, Thai International Airways, itself government-owned, responded by establishing Nok Air, in which it holds a controlling 39% stake. But as so often happens in such situations (think
British Airways
and Go or Continental Airlines and CALite), Nok Air and its parent were more at war with each other than with the new entrant. While Thai AirAsia has come from nothing to operate a fleet of 19 new Airbus A320s serving 24 domestic and international destinations, Nok Air has just 10 aging Boeing 737-400s and two ATR 72s serving 17 domestic points.
The future for Nok may be a bit rosier. CEO Patee Sarasin told eTN in 2009 that the airline, which at the time was carrying fewer than 2 million passengers a year, had "buried the hatchet" with its owner and the two now had common goals. "It is true that we had difficulties in the past to cooperate as we lacked a common vision," he said. "We are now ready to cooperate again."
Prior to the makeup, Thai was considering selling its interest in Nok or assuming 100% control to make it a more effective competitor to Thai AirAsia, although in actuality a takeover might not have been possible owing to the refusal of other shareholders to sell. The unique characteristic of how these people are passionately dedicated to their customs and celebrations is second to none. From small mountain villages to the busy city streets of Madrid, these festivals take place, fueled by religious and cultural origins. The villages and cities have their own festivals in addition to the numerous national holidays, and as one can imagine, there are many "days off" on the Spanish calendar. The beauty of seeing entire towns and cities participate in one same celebration is a symbol of the passion and unity the Spanish have in regards to their festivities.
In contrast, our Great American Melting pot has National Holidays and other celebrations that are carried out, yet we all have our own twist on how or why we celebrate. Some people do not celebrate certain holidays and have personal reasons for or against recognizing and participating in certain National Holidays. Our traditions are no less firm and many of us are very passionate about our celebrations, yet the unity and sameness of how customs are practiced is varied. This parallels with the very first forum we had on Spanish greetings. We discussed how the Spanish greet, and how they all greet this same way. Every time. Again, here in the US, we have greeting customs that vary from a handshake to a pat on the back, with or without eye contact, sometimes non-verbal, sometimes with no touching at all, and other times with a nod and smile.
Greetings and celebrations in the US vs other countries are indicators of how diverse our population is. Americans have varied beliefs, religions, practices and customs. We often celebrate similar holidays but for different reasons and in different ways. The "New World" is certainly a melting pot, and is different from countries like Spain where traditions run deep and are nationally celebrated, customs are very similarly practiced and generally done so with one same common reason and purpose. There is no right or wrong in this contrast, just a difference that points to our unique patchwork that is "American life."

They were sent to a prison inside a U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, on land leased from the government of Cuba. Since 2002, over 700 men have been detained at Gitmo. Most have been released without charges or turned over to other governments. In 2011, Congress specifically prohibited the expenditure of funds to transfer Gitmo prisoners to detention facilities in the continental United States, making it virtually impossible to try them in civilian courts. An assumption made by the Bush administration in selecting this location was that it was beyond the jurisdiction of U.S. courts. The administration wanted to avoid any judicial oversight of how it handled detainees, characterized as enemy combatants. A possible legal challenge to indefinite detention with no formal charges or judicial proceedings might arise from the habeas corpus provision of the Constitution.
Article I, Section 9 of the Constitution states, "The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it." Under this provision, persons detained by the government are entitled to a judicial hearing to determine if there is any legal basis for their detention. Some legal commentators refer to the right of habeas corpus as the "great writ of liberty" because it is a prisoner's ultimate recourse to an impartial judge who can review the possibility that he is being held illegally by the executive (e.g., the police or the military). In nations that do not honor habeas corpus, people simply disappear into prisons without ever having their day in court.
Several controversial Supreme Court cases have come out of Gitmo. One fundamental question that has been debated, but not clearly resolved, is to what extent the war on terror justifies the President's indefinite detention of enemy combatants without the possibility of the minimal judicial review protected by habeas corpus? Another issue in the debate is to what extent Congress must clearly authorize the President to conduct extra-judicial detentions in order for them to be legal? In 2008, the Supreme Court’s decision in
Boumediene v. Bush
offered some answers to these questions. However, the deeply divided 5-4 Court and the likelihood of the protracted nature of the war on terror suggest that debate around these important questions will continue. - 1. so far this week we have discussed three types of security: retail, institutional, and industrial. I think that there is a little bit of confusion still about what the differences are between each of these types of security because we are looking for good definitions for institutions and industry. At its most basic level an institution is an organized group working toward a purpose. We can think of institutions as being more broad than retail which is a sales organization for some sort of good. Often when we think of institutions we are thinking about complex organizations such as schools, hospitals, or other non- profit/ non-business type of organizations. However, large service companies (such as Facebook, Microsoft, GEICO) etc. which are not involved in retail sales can be thought of as institutions in the security sense. Question1. How are these three different types of security the same, and how are they different? One issue that comes up a lot in security, and which came up in our discussion the first and second weeks of class, is that of organic versus contract capabilities. For instance, should the military use soldiers to provide security at all U.S. bases or should they contract that out to a firm and let soldiers focus on training for their overseas missions? The same issue comes up with executive protection. question2. Should executive protection be contracted out to a third party provider, or should it be an organic capability? What are the advantages to contracting executive protection to an outside provider?
