In this course we look at techniques for weed control in the garden using integrated pest management. This includes tools, cultural techniques, mulching, tarps, and other methods.
3. What is a weed?
• An underappreciated plant?
• A plant whose useful characteristics haven’t yet been
identified?
• The wrong plant growing in the wrong place?
• A plant which is generally very aggressive, quickly
reproduces, and takes energy from a desired plant or
crop.
15. Rye
• Important to understand the difference between
ryegrass and cereal rye.
• Generally most cold tolerant cover crop.
• Produce allelopathic chemicals
• Can mine nutrients from deep in the soil
