topic and research you have chosen benefit you?
•Understanding the science behind the topic as well as
the research benefits by allowing myself to gain more
knowledge towards primate's human-like capabilities
such as their methods for communication.
• I believe the advantage of understanding the science
behind this issue for both myself as well as those
around me is that it will enable us to learn more about
the evolution of human beings along with the
reasoning humans as to why humans are more
developed than other primates.
What is the advantage to you, and potentially
those around you, of understanding the science
behind the issue?
• Finding the answer to the question posed in Project 2 “If the
monkeys can combine only two speech items, how did human beings
evolve from this to be able to come up with infinite combinations?”
could affect others around me by providing them more insight into
the beginning stages of human evolution along with more reasoning
as to why we’ve developed and become capable of communication
whereas other primates are slowly still just gaining these techniques.
How might finding the answer to the specific question you
posed in the question development worksheet in Project 2

SCI 100 Question Development Worksheet
Answer the following questions. Your instructor will use these answers to evaluate the critical elements for
Project 2.
1. Why did you select your news story? What about the story makes it interesting to you both personally
and scientifically?
Since childhood, I’ve been fascinated with primates specifically Apes, Gorillas, and Orangutans, which is the
primary reason this news story caught my attention. I would be interested in learning more about primates
human-related capabilities.
2. What did you already know about the topic before selecting the news story? What opinions or
assumptions had you made about it?
I knew primates such as chimpanzees share a large portion of DNA with us humans based on prior interest in
primates. I knew that we had similar physical and behavioral traits. I was never aware primates could
communicate by combining two items in a language sequence, I assumed like most animals communication was
with sounds like grunting or even body language.
3. Which concepts covered in the course relate to your news story? How?
Some concepts from this course relate to the news story I chose such as module two: Separating Good Science
From Bad Science. Understanding the difference between good and bad science allows people to decide
whether the information is valid or invalid. The research found in my article has been made by several reputable
sources, therefor ...

3. Which concepts covered in the course relate to your news
story? How?
Some concepts from this course relate to the news story I chose
such as module two: Separating Good Science
From Bad Science. Understanding the difference between good
and bad science allows people to decide
whether the information is valid or invalid. The research found
in my article has been made by several reputable
sources, therefore, I would consider this “good” science, which
gives me confidence in my article. Another
concept from this course module three: Curiosity in Science.
This article is intriguing one's curiosity about the
capabilities of primates.
4. What question do you have about the topic in the news story?
Select one question that interests you
based on your topic exploration graphic organizer and previous
4. responses.
I would like to focus on this question:
If the monkeys can combine only two speech items, how did
human beings evolve from this to be able to come
up with infinite combinations?
5. Why would this question be important to a natural scientist?
Biology is a natural science. Someone studying biology would
be interested in learning more about primates
full capabilities because it allows us to gain more knowledge
about the evolution of human beings. This
information could reveal the reasoning as to why humans are
more developed compared to primates along with
potentially elaborating on the reason as to why primates never
continued to develop into humans.
7-1-1 Short Answer: Scientific Developments
The news story I chose was “Comparing Primate Vocalizations”
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/09/190903134734.
htm.
On project two, I developed the question “If the monkeys can
5. combine only two
speech items, how did human beings evolve from this to be able
to come up with
infinite combinations?” After reading the article, “The 50
Greatest Breakthroughs
Since the Wheel” I’ve learned the true significance of this
question. Back in the
first-millennium Alphabetization was created, which is also
listed as the twenty-
fifth greatest breakthrough. The alphabet made knowledge more
accessible and
searchable and may have potentially lead to the rise of societies
that used phonetic
letters, which is a writing system used for transcribing the
sounds of human speech
into writing. Before the discovery of the alphabet the means of
communication
between humans was primarily grunting or body language,
which is how most
primates communicate today. This news story along with the
question “If the
monkeys can combine only two speech items, how did human
beings evolve from
this to be able to come up with infinite combinations?” has a
6. large importance to
myself as well as society since it elaborates more on the
evolution of humans and
the possible evolution of other primates.

Topic: Primates that include man and closest relatives’ monkeys
can combine terms during
vocalizations. However, Old World monkeys cannot combine
terms as much as humans do.
When comparing primate vocalizations, it was found that non-
human primates, in particular,
Old World monkeys could only combine two terms unlike
7. human primates who have the
potential to generate various terms in a language sequence.
Main idea: Old World monkeys that include baboons and
proboscis monkeys have
different vocalizations to that of humans. They neither
recombine language elements
nor link more than two items together like humans.
Supporting evidence:
1) Previous research indicates that some of the Old-World
monkey
species like vervet monkeys and tamarin monkeys have alarm
calls
when they see predators like eagles and leopards. The putty-
nosed
monkey of West Africa combines calls when sending alarm
warnings. The general alarm call is “pyow” and warning for
eagles
“hack.” These two items are sometimes combined into “pyow-
hack”
sequence. The putty-nosed monkeys cannot rearrange “pyow-
8. hack”
like humans. The “pyow” comes first then the “hack.”
2) The Campbell’s monkeys also combine two items during
alarm
calls; “hok” for eagles and “krak” for leopards. As much as they
add
“oo” suffix to these items, there utterances are fixed to the two
items that is not as complex as that of humans.
Questions
1.) If the monkeys can combine only two speech items, how did
human
beings evolve from this to be able to come up with infinite
combinations?
2.) What is the relationship between human primate and non-
human
primate vocalizations?
3.) Is it possible for the primates to be taught how to
communicate using
the human language?
Information:
More research on scholarly articles including peer-reviewed
9. journals on primate
vocalizations is appropriate for further research. Meaningful
information can also be
obtained from books such as scientific books, university
websites and newspapers.

2.) This article discusses the psychological change that resulted
in a very large leap in
communication systems of the two groups of primates.
3.) similarity of language between both humans and old world
monkeys.
4.) I believe this article relates towards life sciences within
biology simply because the article
discusses two living organisms humans and monkeys. There are
three major categories of
10. biology such as zoology, which falls underneath this article
since zoology is the study animals
and this includes humans as well.

SCI 100 Project 3 Guidelines and Rubric
Overview
There are three projects for this course. In Project 1, you began
your exploration of a natural science topic by selecting a news
story and completing a topic
exploration graphic organizer. In Project 2, you continued your
analysis of the news story and the natural science topic and
ultimately developed a question that,
as a natural scientist, you would like to study. In Project 3, you
will develop a presentation that discusses why your question is
important and the value of
studying the natural sciences.
Project 3 will assess the following course outcomes, which you
will focus on throughout Themes 3 and 4:
11. ● Investigate major developments in the natural sciences for
informing critical questions that drive scientific inquiry
● Articulate the value of the natural sciences for their impact on
contemporary issues
Prompt
Using the question that you posed in Project 2, explain why the
answer is important for understanding yourself, other people,
and the world around you. In
addition, you will discuss how the natural sciences have
developed to help us answer these important questions. Your
presentation should include speaker notes
so that your instructor knows what you would be saying if you
were actually giving the presentation. The critical elements of
this project will be evaluated by the
information in your presentation. Be sure your actual question
is apparent in the presentation.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
I. Why is the question you identified important to you as a
member of society?
II. Explain how finding the answer to your question might
impact others around you. For example, who might be most
interested in the answer to your
question?
III. Explain why studying the natural sciences is valuable. In
other words, what is the benefit of studying topics in the natural
12. sciences?
IV. Describe the major developments in the natural sciences
related to your topic. Use course resources to back up your
discussion.
V. Detail the major developments in scientific thinking that
support the study and advancement of the natural sciences as
necessary and valuable. Use
course resources to back up your discussion.
VI. How do these developments in the natural sciences and
scientific thinking inform questions about the topic in your
news story? In other words, what is
the relationship between major developments in the natural
sciences and the questions that natural scientists are interested
in?
VII. Discuss the obligation that you have as a citizen of your
society to understand the science behind issues that impact you
every day. For instance, how
can being a more scientifically informed member of society
benefit you and your community?
Review this document to help you create your presentation.
13. Supporting Work and Resources
Throughout Themes 3 and 4, there are several opportunities to
work directly on different elements of this project:
1. In Learning Block 5-1, you will consider the benefits and
value of studying the natural sciences.
2. In Learning Block 5-3, you will identify the major
developments in the natural sciences that are related to your
topic.
3. In Learning Block 6-2, you will think about how
developments in scientific thinking impact the way science is
carried out.
4. In Learning Block 6-3, you will reflect upon how
developments in the sciences influence the types of questions
that researchers ask.
5. In Learning Block 7-1, you will question the importance of
your selected topic and research question to you and the world
around you.
6. In Learning Block 7-2, you will consider the benefits of
understanding the science behind issues that you see in the
news, and you will consider how it
might impact those around you. You will also practice creating
a presentation that addresses these issues.
7. In Learning Block 7-3, you will consider the ethical concerns
of your selected topic.
8. In Learning Block 8-2, you will again consider the
importance of being an informed citizen, and you will reflect on
the value of understanding and
studying the natural sciences.
