This newsletter provides information about the Coffs Harbour Garden Club's recent meeting and upcoming events. At the last meeting, members discussed problems with their gardens and identified plant species. Upcoming events include the club's regular meeting on March 17th and a garden outing on April 5th visiting a rose farm and carnivorous plant gardens. The newsletter also lists volunteer opportunities to help with the Coffs Harbour Show flower and plant displays in late April.

COMING UP What's happening?
At our last meeting, we introduced a really useful segment
suggested by Jan McGeorge when she told us about an
invasion of beetles she was able to identify as the Red
Shouldered Leaf Beetle (Monolepta Australia). They were
devouring her roses and she wondered if anyone else had
encountered them. Jan told us she vacuumed them!
The idea of drawing on the collective
experience of the group must have
been something on everyone's mind
because Robyne Moulds & Barb
Fitzgerald had other queries for the meeting. Robyne had
brought 2 plants for identification – one of which was
identified by Anne-Marie Ely as Night Scented Jasmine -
beautiful perfume at night but shame it is a prolific seeder
making it a noxious weed. Barb was looking for a solution to
her problem with hibiscus buds dropping. Maria Bell offered
solution of need for potassium.
It was such a good idea to use the collective experience of
our group to learn a little more. If there is something
happening in your garden and you would like to share it with
the meeting - bring it along.
Or, if you would like to share a picture or 2 for the newsletter
about something in your garden. Send it in to me at
editorchgc@gmail.com
Cheers,
Sue

Birthday Greetings
Guess who is
celebrating a
birthday in
March?
Happy Birthday
and happy
gardening to:
Mary Booth;
Margaret Crawley;
Jill deClerq;
Margaret Crane;
Anne-Marie Ely; Jan McGeorge; Don McKetin; Barbara
Porteous; Warren Ross & Jill Tomlinson;
And a special belated birthday wish to Helen Kayser whose
birthday was in December. Helen was the person who, for
many years, sent out the mailed birthday cards. I can't
believe I left her off the December list. She should have been
there, alphabetically just before Jesus. Sorry Helen, I won't
forget you this year.
Airport Garden Report
This time it was the inclement weather that halted our
illustrious team of Airport gardeners this month. The team are
hoping to be back at their hoes in April. If you'd like to join in
- give Peter Kimber a call.

March Outing
We had a really nice day visiting three special places.
The first stop was the Community Garden at Boambee that
Graham & Marie Davey worked so hard to have established.
It is adjacent to the Boambee East Community Center. John
and Chris Higgins have taken over as President and Secretary
and they put in a good bit of effort working hard to improve
the gardens. They welcomed us and told us about some
interesting ideas for planting unusual crops like the heirloom
bush bean and the loofah plant. John then showed us the
amazing progress that has turned a vacant paddock into a
thriving community garden in a little over a year.
Second stop was Alfred's quirky little garden. An absolutely
enchanting garden is the only apt description.
FLOWER OF THE MONTH
Frangipani
KINGDOM Plantae
FAMILY Apocynaceae
GENUS Plumeria
SPECIES A few
Frangipani is the common name for
plants belonging to the Plumeria genus
which is named for the French botanist
Charles Plumier.
The plant we most often call frangipani is
the species, P. rubra (above). The
gorgeous white one with the different
shaped leaves belongs to the same
genus, but from the species P. pudica
(below).
The Australian Native Frangipani is not a
Plumeria. Hymenosporum Flavum is a
tree that belongs to the family
Pittosporaceae.
Bring along your favourite for the
competition table on Saturday

Last stop and lunch stop was to Robyne & Bob Mould's garden. Robyn has been collecting plants for many years
and they all feel quite at home at her place and reward her with the most exemplary plant behaviour. If only her
plants could give a few pointers to the misbehaving magnolias in my garden! After a pleasant stroll around Robyne
& Bob's garden we enjoyed a shared sausage sizzle complete with cuppa tea and sweeties.
Thank you Robyne & Bob for your hospitality.

The Coffs Harbour Show
Will be held on Friday 27 from 10am to 10pm & Saturday 28 April from 9:00am to 10pm. This year there is a bit of
a change - the show will not run on Sunday as it has done in the past . The way that the Exhibition Pavilion at the
Show works is that various community groups, like local quiltmakers, cake decorating groups, photography clubs,
and other such interest and hobby groups arrange the display of entries that are entered in the official Show
competitions then help the Show Society by coordinating the judging of those exhibits.
The Coffs Garden Club has been looking after the flower, fruit, vege and honey displays in the Exhibition Hall or
Pavilion, for many years. Margaret Franks has been the chief steward for these sections for a number of years and
we need Garden Club members to help with all the jobs that go with being part of the Show.
We do have four jobs at the Show this year:
SETTING UP: Plants and entries have to be dropped off by Thursday at 9:30am and when entries are dropped off,
we arrange the flowers, fruit and veges to create a razzle dazzle display.
COORDINATE THE JUDGING OF THE EXHIBITS The Show Society appoints judges and we assist by by going
around the displays with the judges to record the winners and write out the winners' certificates and place these
on the winning entries.
MONITOR THE DISPLAY While the Exhibition Hall is open during the show, we have a desk in the Flowers & Plants
section where 2 club members sit to keep an eye on the displays and chat to passers-by who may want to find out
about the Coffs Garden Club.
SUPERVISING THE RETURN OF ENTRIES The Exhibition Hall will be opened on the Sunday morning following the
Show for the return of entries.
We will be asking for volunteers who can come along to assist with these jobs. The Thursday morning, setting up
and writing out the winners certificates is the busiest time. We are usually there from about 8am to 12noon but
monitoring the exhibit during the opening hours of the Show on Friday and Saturday and helping with the return
of entries on the Sunday will require a few bodies as well. So, if you are inclined, there is bound to be a timeslot
for you.
Apart from helping arrange everyone else's exhibits, you might like to enter an exhibit or 2. See the full show
schedule to see what you can enter - www.cofharbourshowsociety.com.au
If you would like to know anything further about the Show, ring Margaret Franks on 0421 366 013
