1. Place a bird bath or fountain in your
yard so birds have access to clean
water for drinking and bathing
2. Fill your bird feeder with seeds and
mixes designed to attract wild
songbirds; if this doesn’t work, try a
different blend
6. Keep cats indoors; if your cat must
be outside, outfit your pet with a
brightly colored collar or bell to warn
the birds
7. Replace a portion of your lawn with
meadow plants and taller grasses
that provide birds with seeds and
nesting places
3. Install a squirrel-proof bird feeder
several feet from shrubbery or trees
that can hide stalking predators
4. Provide shelter by planting a variety
of deciduous and evergreen trees
and shrubs at different locations
and heights
5. Plant native foliage and flowers; birds
feed on the flower seeds as well as the
insects attracted by the plants
8. Do not use fertilizers and pesticides
that harm birds, kill the insects they
eat or destroy plants that produce
edible seeds
9. Create a brush pile from fallen and
trimmed branches to offer birds safety
from predators and shelter from
harsh weather
Install an electronic device that
attracts songbirds by playing cheerful,
digitally recorded bird songs
