Creating ghost in windows
1. Backing up entire PCs via Symantec Ghost
This document will explain how to use Symantec Ghost to create an image of PCs. An image is a
file that contains all data, files, and programs that reside on a PC’s hard drive.
One-time preparation of your USB hard drive to store images:
Step 1 – Name your USB hard drive something distinct (perhaps USB Drive). You can
do this by going into My Computer, right-clicking on the drive, and selecting rename.
Step 2 – Create a folder on your USB drive named BACKUP.
Step 3 – Create sub-folders in the BACKUP folder – one folder for each person in your
office you will be backing up.
Once you have completed the one-time preparation of your USB hard drive, you can
proceed to the next page of instructions.
2. Booting up Symantec Ghost
Step 1 – Insert the Symantec Ghost CD into the PC.
Step 2 – Restart the PC
Step 3 – When the PC restarts it should boot from the Symantec Ghost CD. When the
program is ready to be used you will see this screen:
Starting the Backup
Step 1 – Click on Local -> Disk -> To Image
3. Step 2 – Select the hard drive you want to back up. Usually, this is drive #1
Step 3 – Next, select the folder you want to store your image in. Do this by selecting your
USB BACKUP drive, the BACKUP folder, and then the individual folder where the
backup should be stored (typically the person’s name of the PC you’re backing up)
Once the folder is selected you will need to specify a file name. Again, for simplicities
sake, you can name the file by the person’s name of whose PC you are backing up.
Finally, click Save.
4. Step 4 – Select “Fast” when asked about compression.
Step 5 – Sit back and watch your backup commence.
