1. Calvin Harris is presented here as being kooky and unusual but
relatable to his fans. His costume (a t-shirt and jeans) and hair, a
basic, non styled haircut, show he is relatable to his audience –
they would wear clothes like this, therefore, he isn‟t much
different to them. He is leaning forward, with his hands in his back
pocket and his head is closest to the camera; his facial
expression is alarmed and intriguing which could reflect the fact
he is different and unusual compared to other dance music
artists in his style of music. Since this is an early promotional image
for his first album, the quirky patterned, retro style background he
is stood against also reflects his unusual 80‟s-ish style. Artificial
lighting has been used here and makes the image look bright
and vibrant, as is common with images of dance music artists. He
is also positioned in the middle of the frame so that he dominates
the image and stands out against the vibrant background this
could suggest that he isn‟t afraid to (and will) make his mark on
dance music of the 21st century.
Disclosure are presented as cool, trendy and slick through this
image; their costume is casual, a jumper is worn by Guy and a shirt
is worn by Howard giving them a casual young image and again,
like many other dance music artists, they are able to relate to their
audience who would wear this trendy clothing. Their hairstyles are
both similar, as they both have their hair pushed towards to the
right hand side yet Guy‟s is slightly spikier; it shows that as brothers,
they are similar but both are different to each other which is why
their music is so successful – the merging of opposites. They are
both stood in an upright position, Howard is staring straight at the
camera making direct address with the audience, however Guy
has his hands out in almost a pose which suggests his supremacy
as the older brother and that he is very confident in their music;
almost to the point of arrogance. Guy‟s pose is also very Christ-like,
especially ashis eyes point heaven-ward, adding to the arrogance
of the look, and also indicating that he sees himself as godly and
supreme in his talents – that music has the power to change lives
and “heal”. Again, like Calvin Harris, they are stood against a wall
type background except here it is an off-white colour and is very
plain. This reflects the fact Disclosure are very young and are just
starting out – they aren‟t known for a specific style/image yet and
so it portrays them as a „blank canvas‟. They are using artificial
lighting here, and it creates a shadowy effect on their faces whilst
helping them to stand out against the plain background.
2. Skream is presented as fresh, original and trendy within this
image. From his use of classic costume to the edgy
background, the mise-en-scene elements of this image give
this dubstep artist a unique representation. His
costume, which is a shirt and jeans – smart yet casual – reflect
his style within the industry; a shirt and jeans are a classic
combination and Skream tends to make songs which are
also classic dubstep songs - therefore his style is reflected to
the audience through this use of costume. Both the shirt and
jeans are blue in colour, and so this ensures he stands out
against the brown background (this could also be reflective
in the sense that he stands out in the dance music industry as
a pivotal dubstep artist). His hair is casually tousled to the
side, yet slightly wavy, making it look natural, and thus
suggesting that like other artists/DJ‟s within the dance music
scene, he is relatable to his fans.Skream is also sat down with
his elbows on his knees, and hands together, as if he is
leaning forward. This use of body language/pose suggests he
is a very straightforward artist, who takes music seriously, and
believes that good music is key rather than fancy gimmicks
which artists of other genres may use (again, this view is often
shared by DJ‟s and artists in the dance music industry). His
facial expression – a half smile – also makes him look friendly
and approachable, which reinforces the connection his fans
will feel with him, as he seems like one of „them‟. The
background, which is a tan leather booth type seat, could
also signal genre, as it may remind the reader of seats they
have seen in a club setting, and they also add to Skreams
very „classic‟ star image. The background is also common for
dance music artists; since it is quite plain.
