Nostalgi A Portrayal Of The Past
Nostalgia: A Portrayal of the Past In the films Castle in the Sky and Princess Mononoke, by director
Hayao Miyazaki, there are many references to times that took place before the events that occur in
the stories. Certain historical events can be seen to have affected the way in which Miyazaki handles
events of the past concerning nostalgia. The way in which he presents technological concepts can
represent his feelings towards history and how it should impact the present. These views on
nostalgia often contrast with the way in which American animation typically views the events of the
past. Castle in the Sky presents the idea of an ancient civilization with a secret power that is only
accessible to the heir to Laputa. Hundreds of years have passed since the ancient technology has last
been accessed, and only legends of the place called Laputa still remain. Associated with these
legends are tales of a great destructive weapon that was once fought over to the extent that it needed
to be hidden away. The main character, Sheeta, held the only key to rediscovering the ancient power.
Concerning the technology that is used post the age of Laputa, there seems to be a retro–
evolutionary trend. Instead of the technology trending towards a higher level of advancement, it
regresses to a more rustic form. This is evident in the flying machines, automobiles, and railroads
that are used, which are mechanically similar to pre–world war II designs. Alternatively, the
technology that is

The Walt Disney Company vs. Studio Ghibli
What does a whistling mouse and a catlike bunny creature have in common? They are both the logos
of two leading animation companies: the Walt Disney Company and Studio Ghibli. While Disney
and Studio Ghibli vary in their style, production, and overall themes, they both produce award
winning and adventurous movies for Western and Non–Western audiences alike.
In 1928, the whistling Mickey Mouse in the short cartoon Steamboat Willie led to the beginnings of
success in Walt Disney's company and set the ball rolling for the studio to become the widest known
in the world (Holliss and Sibley 5). Before that, the company was strained financially and ... Show

While the directors of Studio Ghibli had in mind to meet these goals as well, they founded the studio
more to have free reign in their artistic visions for animated movies. They wished to produce
original anime movies(Takai). They on the other hand aimed for just their home country Japan and
came to more renown than they intended.
Altogether Studio Ghibli and Disney have won many different
Therefore, Studio Ghibli's animations embody a strong sense of Japanese culture while also using
Western characters and settings in its productions (Odell and Michelle 33–35). Each animation has
the characteristic style of Anime or animations made in Japan which usually looks like the manga,
Japanese comic books, they are adapted from. Each has their own look but usually the characters
have bigger eyes, small nose and mouth. The two directors of Studio Ghibli brought different
themes and genres of animation to the table. Hayao Miyazaki was preoccupied with fantastical
worlds hidden inside of our own world, flying machines or flying in general, and environmentalism.
Isao Takahata focused more on realistic settings such as school life during adolescence and
collaborated with Miyazaki to produce films that had more themes such as, growing up, strong
female lead characters, forming an identity, animals with human characteristics and anti–war
sentiments (Odell and Michelle 23–30). Disney in contrast, has

Hayao Miyazaki and Japanese Animation Essay
Hayao Miyazaki Hayao Miyazaki has been revolutionary in Japanese animation. A mangaka (an
artist/writer/creator of manga, Japanese comics), an animator, and storyteller, Miyazaki has not only
been very successful in his work, well known and loved by many, but has changed the world of
anime with his unique style of drawing. Through passion and hard work, Miyazaki has become one
of the most successful animators in all of Japan. Miyazaki was born on January 5th, 1941, in Tokyo,
Japan (MUBI.com). His father, Katsuji Miyazaki, was the director and owner of their family's firm,

wanted to be a comic artist. While animation was regaining its popularity in the postwar years, he
saw Legend of the White Serpent by Taji Yabushita, the first Japanese colour animated movie, and
he absolutely fell in love with the feature. After graduating from Toyotama High School (1959) he
went on to enroll in Gakushuin University, where he studied political science and economics. While
he was there, he studied European childrens books and comics after joining a children's literature
research society, things by authors like Rosemary Sutcliff and Antoine du Saint–Exupery. In 1963,
he finally graduated with a degree in political science and economics, but instead of moving into the
fields of politics or finance, he promptly went to get a job at the animation studio of Toei Company,

award winning movie. It is rated PG and is based on a novel by Diana Wynne Jones, Howl's Moving
Castle is directed by Hayao Miyazaki and is produced by Toshio Suzuki. Howl's Moving Castle is

Shintoism In Princess Mononoke
Princess Mononoke was released in 1997, and became the highest grossing film in Japan until
Titanic came out later that year. It was meant to be director Hayao Miyazaki's last film before he
went into retirement, and is praised as one of his absolute masterpieces. Today, I will be critiquing
two articles that discuss aspects of Princess Mononoke's themes and influences, one that relates
Shintoism to Miyazaki's narratives by Oscar Garza, and another that focuses on the icons found
throughout his filmography by Mohammad Amzad Hossain and Wei–Hsin Fu.
First a quick summary: Princess Mononoke follows the last prince of the Emishi named Ashitaka
who, when defending his village from a demonic boar, is cursed to die. In order to lift the curse,
Ashitaka travels west and finds Iron Town, a mining settlement on the outskirts of a divine forest.
He meets their leader, Lady Eboshi, who is currently at war with the forest gods. Disapproving of
the violence that the town people partake in against the forest, Ashitaka seeks to meet with the gods
and their human daughter, San. The dwellers of the forest wish to kill all the humans in an attempt to
take back their home. Now Ashitaka must become a peace keeper and stop an all–out war, hoping
that by doing so the Shishigami, also known as the Forest Spirit, will lift the curse.
Oscar Garza's Hayao Miyazaki and Shinto: A Spiritual Connection employs the theory of
structuralism, the idea of relating aspects of cultural practices and their

Miyazaki's Use Of Environmentalism In The Film WALL-E
The great animation director Hayao Miyazaki has a strong emphasis in his films on
environmentalism and uses many different aspects of film to portray the importance of the
environment on humanity. The Disney Pixar film WALL–E is a very different type of animation
than Miyazaki, but it has a strong environmentalism theme as well. Myiazaki's films are targeted
toward younger audiences, but bring a lot of attention from adults as well. The movie WALL–E uses
the same technique of targeting the film towards children, but also uses themes that plague the adult
world. WALL–E addresses the issue of environmentalism through its cinematography, its mise–en–
sene, and its use of sound.
The cinematography in WALL–E places emphasis on the emptiness of Earth with a destroyed
environment from the opening scene. In Christopher Todd Anderson's paper
Post Apocalyptic Nostalgia WALL–E Garbage, and American Ambivalence Towards Manufacturing
Goods, "In WALL–E's opening scenes, garbage is identified as the primary cause of eco–
catastrophe"..."As the film begins, the animation–effect ''camera'' zooms through a haze of space

The Life Of Hayao Miyazaki
The Life of Hayao Miyazaki
The Story of My Search
When we were first assigned this paper, I was stumped. My interests span throughout a broad
variety of topics, and because of this, I did not really know where to start. I have long been intrigued
by the world of Japanese animation, and recently, I happened upon a hard copy of my favorite film
from when I was a child: Howl's Moving Castle. All of the nostalgic memories I have of watching it
when I was a child flooded my mind, reminding me of how much I admire the artwork in the movie.
I began to brainstorm ideas related to this. In the end, I boiled it down to a biography of Hayao
Miyazaki (the director) and the strong themes in his movies. Combining the two lead me to decide
on addressing how his personal life influenced the persuasive themes and symbols he conveys
through his beautiful art.
My first step to approaching this challenge was to go to the library and research sources that would
be useful in completing this paper. After a few hours I had a written list of dependable articles and
websites that pertained to his movies. Unfortunately, no credible source discussed his life. By
chance, I managed to acquire a book discussing Miyazaki's art and also providing a history of his
career; however, this made my list too plentiful, so I chose the facts most relevant to my specific
topic.

Hayao Miyazaki and Animated Film Essay
Getting inspired is something that can happen unexpectedly. A single thing can just set the stage for
an amazing creation to come about. Much of what people are exposed to due to the media and also
literature can really affect someone's life. Hayao Miyazaki is a film director, animator, screenwriter
and also producer. He is someone who's work really changed my perspective on animation and also
the conventional idea of a hero. Miyazaki was born on January 5, 1941 in Japan. His parents were

The following year Miyazaki also met Akemi Ota, an animator that then became his wife in 1968.
Overall Miyazaki worked in a total of six different animation studios, his positions varied from
director to animator but his work also influenced many other directors or screenwriters within those
companies. Having grown independent from the companies he set off to start his own company
known today as Studio Ghibli. Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985. The studio was created due to a
collaboration by Hayao Miyazaki, his friend Isao Takahata, and also producer Toshio Suzuki. There
furst film collaboration was done in 1984, with the film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Many
people believe that this film is what set the stage for Studio Ghibli to be created. Much of the
studio's success has not solely been due to Miyazaki, but also because of his associates. One of the
most prominent films from the studio was directed by Isao Takahata, the film is Grave of the
Fireflies, which depicts the story of orphans living in Japan during World War II. The company is
also well known for their "no–edits" policy which basically states that the film cannot be altered
when being dubbed. However, this policy has caused many issues with American companies
because some films have been Americanized or altered, which then tends to change the message of
the story and the plot. With the great success that Studio Ghibli has had Miyazaki

Analysis Of Spirited Away By Hayao Miyazaki
When do we truly grow up? In most modern day societies, there is a legal age where young people
legally become adults, in this country it is once the clock strikes 12 on the 18th birthday. In popular
science, becoming mature means your prefrontal cortex has finally fully developed around 24 or 25
years of age for important decision making moments. Others perceive being all grown up when they
move out and are no longer dependent on their parents any longer. In, Hayao Miyazaki's most
acclaimed animation film Spirited Away, Miyazaki's shares his perception on what it means to
become mature through an adventurous story of a 10 year– old girl named Chihiro. Based on
Chihiro's experiences Mr. Miyazaki portrays to his audience that when one is ... Show more content

uncommon wealth of wisdom and respect for rules for a girl her age. These foundational qualities
that she possesses will be useful in her time in among the spirits to rescue her parents from
themselves. In this this movie, Chihiro will be our guiding light of virtue.
Spirited Away is a film that is chock full life lessons. It is very dense in symbolism and filled with
symbolic moral messages; no scene or word spoken is wasted. But one very prominent theme that
Miyazaki wants to explain to his young audience is the dangers of greediness and the freedom that
could be found in selflessness.
Both humans and spirits all have qualities of covetousness in Spirited Away. In the beginning of the
film, Chihiro's parents' voraciousness allows disregard respect and mannerisms, leading them to
consume swinishly the food of the spirit world without permission that literally has literally
transformed them into pigs. The bathhouse workers' avarice blinds them from possible dangers such

Hayao Miyazaki Path to Animation Star artists inspired him. Hayao Miyazaki was only one of many
during postwar Japan who wanted to become a comic artist (master). Like many others, Miyazaki
would look to star artists, such as Osamu Tezuka, Tetsuji Fukushima, and Zohei Shiratsuchi, for
inspiration. Of the three, Tezuka, who was named "the manga god" by fans, had the ingrained effect
on Miyazaki. Miyazaki has written in a Tezuka memorial collection: It's true to say that I was very
heavily influenced by Tezuka. When I was in both elementary and junior high school, I liked his
manga best of all the ones I read... when I passed the age of eighteen and felt that I just had to draw

In addition, many more art and literature figures had an influence on Miyazaki's direction and
philosophy. For example, a French animation, The Shepherdess and the Chimneysweeper, directed
by Paul Grimault, showed Miyazaki how an animation feature film could be targeted at an adult
audience. And, while he did not want to follow Disney's way of neatly finishing movies with main
characters living happily ever after, Miyazaki did admit that he enjoyed Disney shorts such as Silly
Symphonies. All this exposure to Western culture, paired with the foundation that Tezuka laid out
for the Japanese animation industry, put fuel on Miyazaki's passion for animation and his vision as
to exactly what Japanese animation, or animè, could deliver. Early Film Miyazaki joined Toei
Animation Studios, upon graduating Gakushuin University. After three months of training, the
young Miyazaki got to be a part of his first animation productions, Watchdog Woof–Woof and Wolf
Boy Ken, as an in–betweener. An in–betweener is someone who draws, or fills, the animation
between two positions. For example, main artist would draw characters in key positions–compose
the shots–and an in–betweener would fill in the action planned, like a character standing up from a
chair. However, the work of somewhere along the bottom of the animation workflow couldn't match
Miyazaki's ambition. Tired of doing low–level work, Miyazaki seriously considered quitting, but he

Spirited Away By Hayao Miyazaki
Spirited Away In Spirited Away, Hayao Miyazaki introduces a young girl named Chihiro. She's
brought into the Spirit World through the curiosity and greediness of her parents. Miyazaki makes
her life problematic because of the simple nature of humans. He realizes that the different negative
characteristics that humans have within them lead them to trouble, even children. He claims that "I
'm not going to make movies that tell children, "You should despair and run away"." (Hayao
Miyazaki Quotes) With this in mind, Miyazaki attempts to show children that they're capable of
overcoming problems even at the young age that they're at. Within the spirit world, the apparitions
have negative plans for humans, specifically for the future of Chihiro. As if it wasn't enough for him
to put the young girl in a setting with Spirits/Ghosts, he makes it so that these apparitions have
negative plans in mind for the humans that they come in contact with. Miyazaki does this in order to
put Chihiro in a situation that the audience would see as extremely difficult. He then adds onto
Chihiro's circumstances by creating a complex environment that she has to live in while she's in the
spirit world. He places her in an spa/inn run by a deranged woman who cares more for her gigantic
baby than the spa/inn itself. Miyazaki planned and created many different angles of the building in
order to depict to the audience the type of situation that Chihiro is to be put in.

Miyazaki also introduces to the audience the importance of one's name. From the moment she gets a
job from Yubaba the bathhouse owner, Chihiro is bound under a contract that magically changes her
name to Sen. If it had not been for a goodbye card from a friend, Chihiro would have forgotten her
real name. As for Haku, he has not been able to recall his own name for years. When he does
remember later in the film, his eyes are opened and he undergoes emotional and physical changes.
Another aspect of Japanese folklore involved in the film highlights passing through spaces which
mark a separation between one world and another. Areas like the bridge to the bathhouse, and the
tunnel to the abandoned theme park represent this part of Japanese culture. However, the most
important cultural aspect included in the film is the original title. When women or children suddenly
disappeared and could not be located for a long period of time, it was assumed "'they had met
kamikakushi,'" as Reider puts it. Once they come back from Kamikakushi, they are believed to be
socially resurrected. One could say that in the film Chihiro meets her own Kamikakushi during the
time she is away from her parents.
As she goes through the tunnel at the beginning of the film, Chihiro is a whiny little girl who does
not like change. When she comes out of the tunnel at the end of the film, she is standing tall,
fearless, and confident. This post–Kamikakushi is one of many examples of character

Spirited Away Reflection
Hayao Miyazaki's oscar award winning Spirited Away was the first Japanese anime film to win an
Oscar. To see how this animated feature film won this grand award, this paper will talk about the
writing, music, and sound design of this film.
Hayao Miyazaki was born on January 5, 1941 in a town called Akebono–cho in Bunkyō, Tokyo. His
father ran a business that manufactured plane rudders during World War II. At the age of 3,
Miyazaki's family had to evacuate numerous times to escape bombings in their area. Miyazaki
aspired to become a manga artist when he was in junior high, but he was not good at drawing
people, so instead he drew planes, tanks, and ships. He then got inspired by a movie called Panda
and the Magic Serpent (1958) and began to draw more people.
Miyazaki's writing tends to be more on the fantasy side. One theme that can be seen throughout his
films is the joy and wonder of flying, as Miyazaki himself loves the idea of flying. In most of his
more famous films, things start out in a normal and real world setting, and then get whisked away
into a new and strange world filled with mystery and wonder.
The story of Spirited Away follows a ten year old girl named Chihiro, who is currently moving into
a new home in a new town in Japan. On their way to the new house, Chihiro's parents find an
abandoned temple like structure. The family decides to venture in and investigate the area. Chihiro

Gender In Howl's Moving Castle
Wars and Gender in the Worlds of Hayao Miyazaki: An Analysis of Howl's Moving Castle
Animation has always been a way of creating worlds outside of our own and to bestow movement,
frame by frame, on a series of still images. Despite its variety of uses as a medium of film,
animation is often treated as a genre of its own, placed within the constraints of only being
entertainment for kids with a small possibility for weighty themes or adult thematic elements at the
peripherical of a plot that is typically centered around a weak narrative of the action–comedy
variety. However, when used to its full extent, animation becomes a tool for creating art as great as
classical film, using pen, paper, and machines as tools where tradition film uses camera and lenses.

Who Is Miyazaki An Auteur Movie
Miyazaki the Fashion Icon of Film
Many people may have a specific style in which they like to dress. A woman might have a signature
lipstick she enjoys wearing, a man might have a distinct cologne that stands out from the rest.
Movies are not too far apart in comparison. Sometimes people find films more enjoyable than
others, and often do not realize they come from the same director. The Auteur theory is a that
defines the director as the sole author of the entire film, adding his or her own personal style. When
it comes to the world of animation, director Hayao Miyazaki is a pioneer in auteur. His specific
directorial style is seen in many of his films in which he manages to make films enjoyable to adults
of all ages. Kiki's Delivery Service was one of director Miyazaki's first major films. During the
climax of the film Kiki's Delivery Service, director Hayao Miyazaki illustrates his signature auteur
style that makes his movies distinguished and enjoyable.
There is a significant pattern that Hayao Miyazaki has in most of his animated films that identify his
style different from western directors. First, Miyazaki is a director that prefers hand–drawn
animation to computerized animation. Other important details he demonstrates in his films are
strong female leads, original stories, and ordinary characters. In addition, Miyazaki likes to employ
the environment as an important factor in his films. Kiki's Delivery Service exhibits these specific

Themes Of Japan 's Indigenous Religion
THEMES
Japan 's indigenous religion is Shintō, and its customs are enmeshed in Japanese culture. It is
animistic, seeing gods and spirits in everything. This leads to a deep respect for human harmony
with the environment. Many Ghibli films contain jinja, or shrines, and torii, or sacred gates, which
are used to pay respect or give offerings in Shintōism. Ghibli films also contain kami, spirits that
reside in all things. Princess Mononoke is filled with a kami (Odell 28).
Other Japanese mythology is seen through Miyazaki films through spirits that have the ability to
transform their shape, such as the foxes and raccoons in Pom Poko. Buddhism also influences
Miyazaki films. Dragons derive from Buddhist legends and are in Spirited Away. Buddhist statues
are also seen in My Neighbor Totoro, and Pom Poko (Odell 28). All of his movies contain variations
of spirits, demons, or fantastical creatures rooted in nature. There is a balance of empathy through
his human elements, but mystery in his fantasy elements.
One major theme that runs through all Miyazaki films is environmentalism, or how mankind
interacts with nature. This is closely linked with the Shintō ethic that sees the environment as

Hayao Miyazaki: Auteur Essay
"I never read reviews. I'm not interested. But I value a lot the reactions of the spectators."– Hayao
Miyazaki.
The director is responsible for overseeing creative aspects of a film. They develop the vision for a
film and carry the vision out, deciding how the film should look. The director may also be heavily
involved in the writing and editing of the film, as well as managing the script into a sequence of
shots, coordinating the actors in the film and supervising musical aspects. The Auteur Theory
suggests that films contain certain characteristics or 'signatures' that reflect the director's individual
style and give a film its personal and unique stamp. Hayao Miyazaki is one such auteur whose

Miyazaki's childhood was short as he was born January 5, 1941 during World War II, thus without
exception, his films main characters are children, deal with growing up and often consist of one
young female lead and one young male lead. This is evident in My Neighbor Totoro (1988) as the
two main characters are young girls who, unlike adults, can see and befriend the spirits of the spirit
world. In Spirited Away (2001), the leading character Chihiro is a young girl who must deal with
growing up, similarly to Kiki in Kiki's Delivery Service (1989). Princess Mononoke (1997) also
features these stock characters in the form of young San, adopted daughter of the wolf goddess
Moro and Prince Ashitaka, a young girl and boy. Hayao Miyazaki has expressed strong feelings
about childhood, saying that it's a paradisiacal time when, "you're protected by your parents and
unaware of the problems around you". Miyazaki's upbringing during World War II would explain
another unique mark of his films, that being his interest in flight.
Human flight is a frequent theme in Miyazaki's animations. This theme is found in almost every film
directed by him such as in Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986) as it is a flying metropolis and in Kiki's
Delivery Service as Kiki rides her broomstick and watches dirigibles fly over her city. In Spirited
Away, Chihiro soars across the sky as she rides on Haku's back when he is in dragon form. The

Film, Spirited Away, By Miyazaki Hayao
In Miyazaki Hayao's animated film, Spirited Away, Miyazaki presents a young girl Chihiro who
visits an abandoned amusement park, only to become trapped in a fantasy world where spirits
reside. Although most of these creatures are very unique and quite unlike the others, most of them
have one thing in common: their body features are very disproportional compared to the size of their
bodies. This strange similarity depicted by Miyazaki invokes strong feelings of fear and appreciation
in particular for the viewer. While many characters have ominous, creepy appearances similar to that
of a ghost, they still have large eyes, blob–shaped bodies, and they make little–to–no–noise. These
three characteristics emphasize the helplessness– the cuteness–of these creatures. The ominous
appearance of the characters does however quickly begin to clash more obviously with their cute
defining factors. In one early particular scene, Chihiro encounters a radish spirit: a large, round
creature whose body shape resembles a radish. At first, the creature is threatening to the viewer, as it
is large compared to most characters and its appearance is foreign and bizarre. But even though the
spirit appears scary, Chihiro sticks around it briefly, and the viewer is prompted to further observes
its figure. At that point, the the rotundness of the spirit radish's figure becomes more apparent, and
the viewer is lead to see him as not just threatening anymore, but also cute. But things that are cute

Looking At A Few Of Them
Introduction
Throughout the last twenty–five years, the notable director of animated films, Hayao Miyazaki, has
brought not only exhilarating and mysterious stories to life, but also multiple issues that he tries to
convey through each of his films. Looking at a few of them, Miyazaki expresses issues about
feminism, war, environmental issues, and much more. The question that will try to be answered
throughout this essay is, how does Hayao Miyazaki use the elements and principles of art to express
environmental issues and impacts within his films? Through the use of color, scene composition,
and motion, Hayao Miyazaki is able to portray the earth's natural beauty while also conveying
human waste and destruction of the environment and its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is an important and yet, traumatic memory for Miyazaki. He expresses its significance in his
life by incorporating it within the films, My Neighbor Totoro and also his latest movie, The Wind
Rises. The characters with tuberculosis are both female and struggle with being diagnosed with it.
He tries to portray the love, sadness, and possible hope for a cure for tuberculosis within those films.
What inspired Miyazaki and also directed him towards the path of animation and the world of
manga (Japanese comics) was in 1958 when he watched the colored film Hakuja Den ("Hayao
Miyazaki Biography"). Surprisingly, instead of acquiring a degree in the arts, he went to Gakushuiin
University and graduated with a Political Science and Economics degree ("Hayao Miyazaki
Biography"). Miyazaki chose this degree because he thought it was practical and he had planned on
helping reestablish Japans economy and recovery from war ("Hayao Miyazaki" Newsmakers).
However, during his time in university and his strong passion for drawing, he joined the "children's
literature research club" ("Hayao Miyazaki Biography"). This had been the closest thing to comics at
the time ("Hayao Miyazaki Biography"). It exposed him to many fairytales, myths, and mysteries
around the world and is probably the reason why his stories mainly involve children, are mainly
fantasy based, and incorporate old tales. The same year he graduated, he quickly entered his

Auteur Director Case Study
2. Make the case for either Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata as an auteur director I choose the case
of Hayao Miyazaki as an auteur director for this essay. First, what is an auteur director? The word
"auteur" comes from french that means "author" and the auteur theory itself is a lens or way of
looking at movies that put the director as the "author" of the movie. The Auteur Theory argues that a
movie represents the director's passion and vision; thus, movies that are directed by an auteur
director will reeks of their own signature styles which can be found in repetitive and recognisable
patterns, themes, and in some cases visual (in our case is art) that will give the audience hints as
who is the director of the movie. It is pretty rare to find an auteur director these days because usually
to be able to be an auteur director, a director has to have a full control, from the cast, the visual and
the music, of the the movie that they make. Most producers don't give directors that kind of full
control. There's not a lot of auteur directors that make it big in the movie industry. Think of Quentin
Tarantino, Stanley Kubrick, Christopher Nolan. They are a few of the most famous auteur directors

First and foremost is the big amount of time and effort Miyazaki spend on a project. One of the most
surprising thing is that he creates his own storyboards without any intervention from external
parties. That means he can unleash 100% of his creativity to his works. Second, in addition to
creating his own storyboard, he will then review every single animation cell that come out from the
storyboard. It's not a rare occurrence that he will re–do the animation cells if he deems that the
artist's work is not up to his standard and the animation cell cannot properly depict his vision4. This
way, Miyazaki has total control of all story and visual that appear in the final cut of the

Comparing Princess Mononoke And Disney Movies
They say:
– When I first saw Princesses Mononoke at five, I didn't understand any conflict or meaning of the
film. Only the scene where the Forest Spirit is finding his head and killing all the living things on
earth stayed in my mind. I remember laying in my bed that night after watching the film thinking,
"This movie is so scary... how nice will it be if this princess is a Disney princess." I have believed
for a long time that if Princess Mononoke was produced by Disney, the film will be so much more
successful.
I say
– After becoming a young adult and rewatching Princess Mononoke again, my old thought of the
film, which was Princess Mononoke being produced by Disney will be more successful, has twisted.
The style of Studio Ghibli provided the movie the unique, exciting, and memorable features. To be
more specific, the fascinating and well–thought storyline was the most outstanding part of the film.
How Hayao Miyazaki did not separate good and evil with a clear defined line; illustrated a deeper
environmentalist message than Disney films; created an open ending which gives the audiences
more space to imagine and contemplate, are all what made the film a big hit during the 1990s.

There are no definite evil characters in Princess Mononoke. While Lady Eboshi kills and hunts
down the animals in the forest, she also stays loyal to the Iron Town and tries to give the citizens a
better quality of life. Additionally, when Nature is fighting the humans back, they themselves got
into an internal conflict and lost their unity. This feature makes the film more convincing and
relatable to audiences. In real life, people are not always bad or good. Humans' reactions depend on
different situation. Comparing Princesses Mononoke (1997) to The Jungle Book (1967) by Disney,
both of them are telling a story that happened in the woods and the conflict between human and

`` Princess Mononoke `` Directed By Hayao Miyazaki
In an interview with the director Hayao Miyazaki, he states that, "When you talk about plants, or an
ecological system or forest, things are very easy if you decide that bad people ruined it. But that's
not what humans have been doing. It's not bad people who are destroying forests." With problems
such as pollution, deforestation, and global warming constantly on the rise due to human
consumption, creative minds around the globe are incorporating these themes into their works to
express their thoughts on these environmental issues. One of those works is "Princess Mononoke"
directed by Hayao Miyazaki. In this animated film Miyazaki shines a light on the senseless
destruction of the environment caused by humanity's desire for material goods. The core theme in
"Princess Mononoke" is simply that if humans continue to mindlessly devastate the environment we
will eventually exhaust all of our resources and destroy the planet. Many artists, authors, and
directors have also dealt with this subject matter but the way Miyazaki directs and conveys this
theme is what makes "Princess Mononoke" a truly unique movie. In this film, Miyazaki examines
some of the impact and consequences of environmental destruction and employs techniques such as
the personification of animals to argue that humans should have more respect and take care of the
environment around them. "Princess Mononoke" takes place during an unspecified period in
medieval Japan. The movie opens with a boar–like monster

The characters do not follow a strict guideline of good or evil but alternate according to the plot.
Howl's character is one that alternates between the main character, the hero, soulless character, and
the hopeless protagonist. He takes on a devilish form and is perceived as evil incarnate, but at the
same time, Miyazaki maintains howl's character as one who is a victim of his own mistakes.
Another character, the young boy, disguises himself as an old healer. Although he is just a boy, he
takes on the role of a guardian of the castle, a wizard apprentice, and even a healer. The witch of the

their help they managed to get the thorn out. Although Chihero's friends and enemies acted as

Chihero took what he had stolen and returned it to Zeniba to clear his name. The journey to her

Spirited Away : Film Directed By Hayao Miyazaki Essay
Spirited Away is film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The messages contained within
Spirited Away are almost entirely steeped in symbolism. On the surface, the film can be seen as
young girl that struggles through a terrifying situation while trying to maintain and develop her
personal identity. This is indeed the story I believe Hayao Miyazaki intended to tell. However, there
is symbolic representation behind almost every single character and object of the film. There are
smaller metaphors contained inside the larger allegory. Admittedly, a lot of the base ideas I will
explore in the proceeding text is not my own. However, I will use my own observations to expand
upon this third–party's analysis, and make the argument my own. Other students so far have
presented the symbolism of Spirited Away as portraying Miyazaki's criticism of Japanese culture
during the 80s. This very well may be, and most likely is, the source material for the imagery of the
film. However, my analysis is that of a much broader, general viewpoint of our lives as individuals.
First, I want to establish that the larger allegory is the films plot. A young girl finding her identity
through displays of hardship with hints of environmentalism and social problems. I believe hidden
within this allegory is the imagery that the setting and characters are all smaller representations that
build into the larger symbols that establish to film's general plot. The Ghost Town can be seen as our
daily lives.

Analysis Of Mihayao Spirited Away By Miyazaki Hayao...
In a traditional or typical family, it is always understood that children are meant to and able to rely
on their parents for both safety and emotional support. In the film by Miyazaki Hayao Spirited
Away, we observe a family far from the traditional sense of the word. Much of this film is about a
young ten–year–old girl who is forced to save herself and her parents from being forever stuck in a
world separate of their own. The relationships she loses and gains form her into a different person
than who she is in the beginning of the film. Susan Napier asserts in her book "Anime from Akira to
Howl's Moving Castle" Chihiro is a bratty child with parents who seem to be detached with her and
as we see in the film selfish and indulgent in their own desires (181). These factors all contribute to
the development and relationships of Chihiro in the film as well as the idea of family. At the
beginning of the film as Chihiro and her parents are driving to their new home in the countryside,
we are introduced to the type of relationships and personality of the family members. Napier
describes her parents as "disconnected from each other and their daughter" and Chihiro as a "whiny,
sullen, and self–obsessed" child (181). Right off the bat we are able to see a significant difference in
what a family is considered to be and how it is represented in the film. As mentioned before a family
is meant to care for each other and parents are meant to care for their children especially, however
perhaps because of these circumstances we are led on the journey of Chihiro's "evolution" from that
of a spoiled child to a braver and assertive child. Upon getting lost in the forest by taking a shortcut,
the father decides instead of trying to find their way back to the road, on exploring the mysterious
tunnel and the mother follows, telling Chihiro to stay in the car while they go off to see what is on
the other end.
Already we see how different the role of the father is portrayed as someone who thinks of his own
desires and being before that of his wife or daughter. In the traditional role of a father, he is the
person who is the protector of his family and as such he is meant to put his family first. It is pointed
out in Napier's book

Analysis Of The Poem ' The River That The Boy Spirit '
She cleaned the spirit's dirty body and found out that the dirty things all came from human's rubbish
that discharged into rivers and lakes (Napier, 2006). After Chihiro cleaned the spirit, this lets him
not suffering from pollution. Then the spirit gave Chihiro some treasure that also showed Miyazaki's
view that if people try to protect the nature, nature will also return something for humans (Napier,
2006). Another environmental concern in Spirited Away was a boy who used to be the spirit of a
river near Chihiro's old town, but he forgot his name. And he was working in the spa center because
the river was filled by human to build a highway (Reider, 2005). Miyazaki's view changed because
his life changed at that time. Japan has developed quickly at that time especially the industry, but
people ignored that some activities could harm the environment. Also, Napier stated Miyazaki
explained that the inspiration for the river that the boy spirit was a personal experience of his own
when he helped to clean a polluted river near his home (Napier, 2006). Miyazaki wanted to use the
magic film to tell people the truth what they did. Their behaviors reflected their daily life that
damaged the environment with no intention and also encouraged people to solve the problem in
order to protect the environment. Ponyo on the Cliff Miyazaki's recent film is Ponyo on the Cliff.

I can't help but wonder how does Studio Ghibli's leading director Hayao Miyazaki draw on western
sources and settings as well as Japanese history and traditions in two of Studio Ghibli's films: 'My
Neighbour Totoro' and 'Spirited Away' ?
With headquarters based in Koganei, Tokyo, Japan, Studio Ghibli is easily one of Japan's most
famous animation studio's in the world and is known as "the Disney of Japan". It was founded June
15th, 1985 after the great success of 'Nausicaa of the valley of the wind' the studio is headed by
directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata even though they were uncertain as to whether the
studio would find any success or crash and burn they had a vision to "blow a new wind through the
anime industry" which was pretty ambitious to say the least but has certainly lived up to its name.
Hence the clever name given to the studio by Miyazaki himself, Ghibli means "hot wind blowing
through the Sahara Desert". The name was used for Italian scouting airplanes during World War II.
Miyazaki, who has a great love for airplanes, named his studio after it.

Studio Ghibli 's Princess Mononoke, Directed By Hayao...
Human civilization is linked with environmental destruction, and despite the many implemented
laws to limit the pollution released into the environment, degradation persists because humans have
enough influence to cause harm to the environment as shown with overdeveloped human
settlements (Shea). Global warming is growing as a predominant problem that can affect future
generations and to spread awareness films are incorporating a pro–environmental message. Studio
Ghibli 's Princess Mononoke, written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, draws a connection between
human greed and environmental consequences. The difference between this film and many other
environmental films is that the supernatural forces of nature serve as a symbol of retaliation against
humans ' actions instead of the consequences of those actions showing retribution. In "Animating
Child Activism: Environmentalism and Class Politics in Ghibli's Princess Mononoke (1997) and
Fox's Fern Gully (1992)", Michelle J. Smith and Elizabeth Parsons state that the film failed to
properly show human run corporations as the direct cause of environmental disaster because the
supernatural creatures are represented as the immediate cause. I believe, however, that the film
appeal to the emotions of anger and hatred that began due to human actions and that have led to the
overall negative impact on the environment. Through the characters, Ashitaka, and Lady Eboshi, and

Analysis Of The Film ' The Tale Of The White Serpent '
Ever since watching Hayao Miyazaki's film, 'Spirited Away', I was enamoured with the art style
aesthetics, smooth animation and storytelling. His work in Studio Ghibli had played a major part in
my desire to work in animation and to create artistic and compelling stories. But it's not just me he
has influenced and inspired, and it's in this essay that I will discuss how this illustrious individual
has influenced and placed his mark in the animation world.
Miyazaki had always had an interest in drawing in his youth. Though his fascination with animation
had started during his high school years when he first watched the feature–length anime film, 'The
Tale of the White Serpent'. And after joining a children 's literature club in college, his interest only
grew. It was in 1963 after completing his degrees, that Miyazaki decided to pursue animation as a
career and joined Toei Animation. There, he learned the basic fundamentals of animation and met up
with his future collaborators, associates and even his future wife.
He started off drawing key frames in the animations he worked on, making sure that the figures
moved and transitioned smoothly. His skill and determination in creating such free–flow work had
impressed his higher ups, and he was soon moved up from being an in–between artist, to becoming
heavily involved with the Animators Union. That's where he would eventually work alongside many

Portrayal Of Female Characters Of Hayao Miyazaki 's Films
The Portrayal of Female Characters in Hayao Miyazaki's Films
By Muhammad Aiman Mohd Zin
I remembered the first time I was introduced to one of Miyazaki's most prominent animation film,
Spirited Away (2001). The film absolutely captured the essence of what a fantasy world should be. I
was mesmerized by the characters, the style, the animation movement and the whole entire world. It
was as if the world probably existed somewhere, hidden from the reality we live in. I was hooked
with Miyazaki's work since then. The influences of Miyazaki's work has driven me to follow my
dream as an animator. I realized that the reason why I love most of Miyazaki's work is because of
his in–depth characters development. He managed to give life to the characters he created hence,
making the viewer more connected with the story he directed. For my thesis, I will analyze how
Miyazaki portrays female characters in his movies. The female character that I would analyze are
from Miyazaki's film entitled Princess Mononoke (1997), Spirited Away (2001) and Laputa: Castle
in the Sky (1986).
Princess Mononoke was one of the highest grossing film in Japan during the year it was released in

Analysis Of My Neighbour Totoro
The adventurous, visually enchanting animated Japanese movie, My Neighbour Totoro, by Hayao
Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli released in 1988 in Japan, attempts to show the viewers the innocence
and the sense of community in Japan before the prevalent industrialization and economic boom. The
movie is set in the countryside away from the big industrialized cities. The main characters are the
schoolgirl, Satsuki Kusakabe, and her younger sister, Mei Kusakabe. Their days are brightened
thanks to the spirit of the forest, Totoro.
Hayao Miyazaki, who is born in 1941, is incorporating his own childhood in the film. Furthermore,
he focuses on the historical time the movie is set. Meanwhile, noting that the movie is made in 1988
which is during the period of the economic bubble, he reminds us of the simple Japan in the 1950s
before the economic boom occupied the people of this country. In contrast to the past, people who
live in the city area do not get involved with one another's business despite how Japan has practiced
chonaikai for having an intimate sense of community within the neighbourhood ever since the
revival of chonaikai after World War 2. Hayao Miyazaki is able to reveal this specific ambience of
the Japanese community in the movie when the Kusakabe's neighbours, a young boy, and
grandmother, come to help the Kusakabe family move into their 'new' old rotten house. It is also
seen when all the neighbours nearby help Satsuki look for her lost sister. Although the neighbours

The climax scene begins in the home of one of Kiki client's. While visiting Kiki sees on her client's
television that her friend Tombo is hanging off a blimp that is heading straight into town.
Imminently, Kiki then rushes to her friend's aid even though she has lost her ability to fly. So, with a
sense of purpose, Kiki takes a broom from a man in the middle of town and concentrates extremely
hard to fly again. As said before, one of Miyazaki's key traits of his auteur is his use of the
environment. At that moment, Kiki tries to physically and emotionally connect with the wind to fly.
The wind is calm at first but then busts out a gust of air shooting Kiki into the sky. The incident
Tombo is in makes it possible only for Kiki to save him since no one else can reach him. Under this
circumstance, the town watches in horror waiting for the boy to be saved. Then, Tombo's hand slips
from the rope of the blimp and begins to fall where Kiki saves him just time in midair. As a result,
Kiki the strong female lead saves her friend after overcoming her self–doubt. All of this took place
in an ordinary town, the wind contributed in helping Kiki gain her confidence back. Which
concluded with a great original story. Overall, specific examples of Miyazaki's auteur style were
seen in the climax scene of Kiki Delivery Service. Hayao Miyazaki has long been an admired

Studio Ghibli Is A Universe Apart
Studio Ghibli is by many lazily known as the Asian equivalent to Disney, but the comparison only
remains true in terms of box office sales. In terms of content, Studio Ghibli is a universe apart.
Founded in 1984 by founder and world renowned director Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli has for
decades since its establishment churned out iconic films known for their beautifully drawn frames
and fantastical plots, nearly all of which star strong, intelligent, independent–minded female
protagonists. This trend can be traced all the way back to Miyazaki's first feature length animated
film titled Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, which debuted in theaters in Japan May of 1984. This
was the same decade Disney released The Little Mermaid (1989) in ... Show more content on

Another of Ghibli's films, Princess Mononoke (1997), made emphatic this archetype. Mononoke is a
movie about the warrior–princess San, who lives amongst wolf–gods and attacks the human villages
that threaten her forest home; it is certainly not a film about a damsel in distress as are many
Western films centered around a female lead. San is best described as an independent, ferocious,
wild, but also virtuous individual. The prince and princess characters never enter into the realm of
romance either in Mononoke, an occurrence very much contrary to the typical love–story arc that
drives numerous other animated movies (Aladdin, Snow White, The Little Mermaid, etc). In fact
when San first meets Ashitaka, the prince from a human village, she is sucking poison from the
gunshot wound of a giant wolf and spitting blood into a river. She never swoons nor falters, but
stares covered in blood and tells him to "go away." Even later in the story when Ashitaka calls her
beautiful, she recoils. "What is it, San?" asks one of the wolf–gods. "Want me to crunch his face
off?" In her interactions with Ashitaka, San is indeed obstinate but later is forced to confront her
human identity. This never comes across as him taming her however, but is a relationship of shared
respect. This is seen in the conclusion of the film when– after the two characters have formed a
strong friendship and have worked together

Studio Ghibli's Success and Impact

  • 1. Nostalgi A Portrayal Of The Past Nostalgia: A Portrayal of the Past In the films Castle in the Sky and Princess Mononoke, by director Hayao Miyazaki, there are many references to times that took place before the events that occur in the stories. Certain historical events can be seen to have affected the way in which Miyazaki handles events of the past concerning nostalgia. The way in which he presents technological concepts can represent his feelings towards history and how it should impact the present. These views on nostalgia often contrast with the way in which American animation typically views the events of the past. Castle in the Sky presents the idea of an ancient civilization with a secret power that is only accessible to the heir to Laputa. Hundreds of years have passed since the ancient technology has last been accessed, and only legends of the place called Laputa still remain. Associated with these legends are tales of a great destructive weapon that was once fought over to the extent that it needed to be hidden away. The main character, Sheeta, held the only key to rediscovering the ancient power. Concerning the technology that is used post the age of Laputa, there seems to be a retro– evolutionary trend. Instead of the technology trending towards a higher level of advancement, it regresses to a more rustic form. This is evident in the flying machines, automobiles, and railroads that are used, which are mechanically similar to pre–world war II designs. Alternatively, the technology that is ... Studio Ghibli Marina Klimova Professor Stacy English 111 1 October 2017 The Walt Disney Company vs. Studio Ghibli What does a whistling mouse and a catlike bunny creature have in common? They are both the logos of two leading animation companies: the Walt Disney Company and Studio Ghibli. While Disney and Studio Ghibli vary in their style, production, and overall themes, they both produce award winning and adventurous movies for Western and Non–Western audiences alike. In 1928, the whistling Mickey Mouse in the short cartoon Steamboat Willie led to the beginnings of success in Walt Disney's company and set the ball rolling for the studio to become the widest known in the world (Holliss and Sibley 5). Hayao Miyazaki was preoccupied with fantastical worlds hidden inside of our own world, flying machines or flying in general, and environmentalism. Isao Takahata focused more on realistic settings such as school life during adolescence and collaborated with Miyazaki to produce films that had more themes such as, growing up, strong female lead characters, forming an identity, animals with human characteristics and anti–war sentiments (Odell and Michelle 23–30). It was meant to be director Hayao Miyazaki's last film before he went into retirement, and is praised as one of his absolute masterpieces. Today, I will be critiquing two articles that discuss aspects of Princess Mononoke's themes and influences, one that relates Shintoism to Miyazaki's narratives by Oscar Garza, and another that focuses on the icons found throughout his filmography by Mohammad Amzad Hossain and Wei–Hsin Fu. First a quick summary: Princess Mononoke follows the last prince of the Emishi named Ashitaka who, when defending his village from a demonic boar, is cursed to die. In order to lift the curse, Ashitaka travels west and finds Iron Town, a mining settlement on the outskirts of a divine forest. He meets their leader, Lady Eboshi, who is currently at war with the forest gods. Disapproving of the violence that the town people partake in against the forest, Ashitaka seeks to meet with the gods and their human daughter, San. The dwellers of the forest wish to kill all the humans in an attempt to take back their home. Now Ashitaka must become a peace keeper and stop an all–out war, hoping that by doing so the Shishigami, also known as the Forest Spirit, will lift the curse. Oscar Garza's Hayao Miyazaki and Shinto: A Spiritual Connection employs the theory of structuralism, the idea of relating aspects of cultural practices and their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Miyazaki's Use Of Environmentalism In The Film WALL-E The great animation director Hayao Miyazaki has a strong emphasis in his films on environmentalism and uses many different aspects of film to portray the importance of the environment on humanity. The Disney Pixar film WALL–E is a very different type of animation than Miyazaki, but it has a strong environmentalism theme as well. Myiazaki's films are targeted toward younger audiences, but bring a lot of attention from adults as well. The movie WALL–E uses the same technique of targeting the film towards children, but also uses themes that plague the adult world. WALL–E addresses the issue of environmentalism through its cinematography, its mise–en– sene, and its use of sound. The cinematography in WALL–E places emphasis on the emptiness of Earth with a destroyed environment from the opening scene. • 33. The Life Of Hayao Miyazaki The Life of Hayao Miyazaki The Story of My Search When we were first assigned this paper, I was stumped. My interests span throughout a broad variety of topics, and because of this, I did not really know where to start. I have long been intrigued by the world of Japanese animation, and recently, I happened upon a hard copy of my favorite film from when I was a child: Howl's Moving Castle. All of the nostalgic memories I have of watching it when I was a child flooded my mind, reminding me of how much I admire the artwork in the movie. I began to brainstorm ideas related to this. In the end, I boiled it down to a biography of Hayao Miyazaki (the director) and the strong themes in his movies. Combining the two lead me to decide on addressing how his personal life influenced the persuasive themes and symbols he conveys through his beautiful art. My first step to approaching this challenge was to go to the library and research sources that would be useful in completing this paper. After a few hours I had a written list of dependable articles and websites that pertained to his movies. Unfortunately, no credible source discussed his life. By chance, I managed to acquire a book discussing Miyazaki's art and also providing a history of his career; however, this made my list too plentiful, so I chose the facts most relevant to my specific topic. The Results of My Search Hayao Miyazaki was born in the Bunkyo–ho district of Tokyo on January 5, 1941. His father, Katsuji Miyazaki, was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Much of what people are exposed to due to the media and also literature can really affect someone's life. Hayao Miyazaki is a film director, animator, screenwriter and also producer. He is someone who's work really changed my perspective on animation and also the conventional idea of a hero. Miyazaki was born on January 5, 1941 in Japan. The following year Miyazaki also met Akemi Ota, an animator that then became his wife in 1968. Overall Miyazaki worked in a total of six different animation studios, his positions varied from director to animator but his work also influenced many other directors or screenwriters within those companies. Having grown independent from the companies he set off to start his own company known today as Studio Ghibli. Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985. The studio was created due to a collaboration by Hayao Miyazaki, his friend Isao Takahata, and also producer Toshio Suzuki. There furst film collaboration was done in 1984, with the film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Many people believe that this film is what set the stage for Studio Ghibli to be created. Much of the studio's success has not solely been due to Miyazaki, but also because of his associates. One of the most prominent films from the studio was directed by Isao Takahata, the film is Grave of the Fireflies, which depicts the story of orphans living in Japan during World War II. The company is also well known for their "no–edits" policy which basically states that the film cannot be altered when being dubbed. However, this policy has caused many issues with American companies because some films have been Americanized or altered, which then tends to change the message of the story and the plot. Both humans and spirits all have qualities of covetousness in Spirited Away. In the beginning of the film, Chihiro's parents' voraciousness allows disregard respect and mannerisms, leading them to consume swinishly the food of the spirit world without permission that literally has literally transformed them into pigs. Hayao Miyazaki was only one of many during postwar Japan who wanted to become a comic artist (master). Like many others, Miyazaki would look to star artists, such as Osamu Tezuka, Tetsuji Fukushima, and Zohei Shiratsuchi, for inspiration. Of the three, Tezuka, who was named "the manga god" by fans, had the ingrained effect on Miyazaki. Miyazaki has written in a Tezuka memorial collection: It's true to say that I was very heavily influenced by Tezuka. For example, a French animation, The Shepherdess and the Chimneysweeper, directed by Paul Grimault, showed Miyazaki how an animation feature film could be targeted at an adult audience. And, while he did not want to follow Disney's way of neatly finishing movies with main characters living happily ever after, Miyazaki did admit that he enjoyed Disney shorts such as Silly Symphonies. All this exposure to Western culture, paired with the foundation that Tezuka laid out for the Japanese animation industry, put fuel on Miyazaki's passion for animation and his vision as to exactly what Japanese animation, or animè, could deliver. Early Film Miyazaki joined Toei Animation Studios, upon graduating Gakushuin University. After three months of training, the young Miyazaki got to be a part of his first animation productions, Watchdog Woof–Woof and Wolf Boy Ken, as an in–betweener. An in–betweener is someone who draws, or fills, the animation between two positions. For example, main artist would draw characters in key positions–compose the shots–and an in–betweener would fill in the action planned, like a character standing up from a chair. • 49. Spirited Away By Hayao Miyazaki Spirited Away In Spirited Away, Hayao Miyazaki introduces a young girl named Chihiro. She's brought into the Spirit World through the curiosity and greediness of her parents. Miyazaki makes her life problematic because of the simple nature of humans. He realizes that the different negative characteristics that humans have within them lead them to trouble, even children. He claims that "I 'm not going to make movies that tell children, "You should despair and run away"." (Hayao Miyazaki Quotes) With this in mind, Miyazaki attempts to show children that they're capable of overcoming problems even at the young age that they're at. Within the spirit world, the apparitions have negative plans for humans, specifically for the future of Chihiro. As if it wasn't enough for him to put the young girl in a setting with Spirits/Ghosts, he makes it so that these apparitions have negative plans in mind for the humans that they come in contact with. Miyazaki does this in order to put Chihiro in a situation that the audience would see as extremely difficult. He then adds onto Chihiro's circumstances by creating a complex environment that she has to live in while she's in the spirit world. He places her in an spa/inn run by a deranged woman who cares more for her gigantic baby than the spa/inn itself. Miyazaki planned and created many different angles of the building in order to depict to the audience the type of situation that Chihiro is to be put in. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If it had not been for a goodbye card from a friend, Chihiro would have forgotten her real name. As for Haku, he has not been able to recall his own name for years. When he does remember later in the film, his eyes are opened and he undergoes emotional and physical changes. Another aspect of Japanese folklore involved in the film highlights passing through spaces which mark a separation between one world and another. Areas like the bridge to the bathhouse, and the tunnel to the abandoned theme park represent this part of Japanese culture. However, the most important cultural aspect included in the film is the original title. When women or children suddenly disappeared and could not be located for a long period of time, it was assumed "'they had met kamikakushi,'" as Reider puts it. Once they come back from Kamikakushi, they are believed to be socially resurrected. One could say that in the film Chihiro meets her own Kamikakushi during the time she is away from her parents. To see how this animated feature film won this grand award, this paper will talk about the writing, music, and sound design of this film. Hayao Miyazaki was born on January 5, 1941 in a town called Akebono–cho in Bunkyō, Tokyo. His father ran a business that manufactured plane rudders during World War II. At the age of 3, Miyazaki's family had to evacuate numerous times to escape bombings in their area. Miyazaki aspired to become a manga artist when he was in junior high, but he was not good at drawing people, so instead he drew planes, tanks, and ships. He then got inspired by a movie called Panda and the Magic Serpent (1958) and began to draw more people. Miyazaki's writing tends to be more on the fantasy side. One theme that can be seen throughout his films is the joy and wonder of flying, as Miyazaki himself loves the idea of flying. In most of his more famous films, things start out in a normal and real world setting, and then get whisked away into a new and strange world filled with mystery and wonder. The story of Spirited Away follows a ten year old girl named Chihiro, who is currently moving into a new home in a new town in Japan. On their way to the new house, Chihiro's parents find an abandoned temple like structure. The family decides to venture in and investigate the area. This leads to a deep respect for human harmony with the environment. Many Ghibli films contain jinja, or shrines, and torii, or sacred gates, which are used to pay respect or give offerings in Shintōism. Ghibli films also contain kami, spirits that reside in all things. Princess Mononoke is filled with a kami (Odell 28). Other Japanese mythology is seen through Miyazaki films through spirits that have the ability to transform their shape, such as the foxes and raccoons in Pom Poko. Buddhism also influences Miyazaki films. Dragons derive from Buddhist legends and are in Spirited Away. Buddhist statues are also seen in My Neighbor Totoro, and Pom Poko (Odell 28). All of his movies contain variations of spirits, demons, or fantastical creatures rooted in nature. There is a balance of empathy through his human elements, but mystery in his fantasy elements. One major theme that runs through all Miyazaki films is environmentalism, or how mankind interacts with nature. This is closely linked with the Shintō ethic that sees the environment as interconnected beings that deserve respect. Miyazaki's childhood was short as he was born January 5, 1941 during World War II, thus without exception, his films main characters are children, deal with growing up and often consist of one young female lead and one young male lead. This is evident in My Neighbor Totoro (1988) as the two main characters are young girls who, unlike adults, can see and befriend the spirits of the spirit world. In Spirited Away (2001), the leading character Chihiro is a young girl who must deal with growing up, similarly to Kiki in Kiki's Delivery Service (1989). Princess Mononoke (1997) also features these stock characters in the form of young San, adopted daughter of the wolf goddess Moro and Prince Ashitaka, a young girl and boy. Hayao Miyazaki has expressed strong feelings about childhood, saying that it's a paradisiacal time when, "you're protected by your parents and unaware of the problems around you". Miyazaki's upbringing during World War II would explain another unique mark of his films, that being his interest in flight. Human flight is a frequent theme in Miyazaki's animations. This theme is found in almost every film directed by him such as in Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986) as it is a flying metropolis and in Kiki's Delivery Service as Kiki rides her broomstick and watches dirigibles fly over her city. Film, Spirited Away, By Miyazaki Hayao In Miyazaki Hayao's animated film, Spirited Away, Miyazaki presents a young girl Chihiro who visits an abandoned amusement park, only to become trapped in a fantasy world where spirits reside. Although most of these creatures are very unique and quite unlike the others, most of them have one thing in common: their body features are very disproportional compared to the size of their bodies. This strange similarity depicted by Miyazaki invokes strong feelings of fear and appreciation in particular for the viewer. While many characters have ominous, creepy appearances similar to that of a ghost, they still have large eyes, blob–shaped bodies, and they make little–to–no–noise. These three characteristics emphasize the helplessness– the cuteness–of these creatures. The ominous appearance of the characters does however quickly begin to clash more obviously with their cute defining factors. In one early particular scene, Chihiro encounters a radish spirit: a large, round creature whose body shape resembles a radish. At first, the creature is threatening to the viewer, as it is large compared to most characters and its appearance is foreign and bizarre. But even though the spirit appears scary, Chihiro sticks around it briefly, and the viewer is prompted to further observes its figure. At that point, the the rotundness of the spirit radish's figure becomes more apparent, and the viewer is lead to see him as not just threatening anymore, but also cute. • 93. Auteur Director Case Study 2. Make the case for either Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata as an auteur director I choose the case of Hayao Miyazaki as an auteur director for this essay. First, what is an auteur director? The word "auteur" comes from french that means "author" and the auteur theory itself is a lens or way of looking at movies that put the director as the "author" of the movie. The Auteur Theory argues that a movie represents the director's passion and vision; thus, movies that are directed by an auteur director will reeks of their own signature styles which can be found in repetitive and recognisable patterns, themes, and in some cases visual (in our case is art) that will give the audience hints as who is the director of the movie. It is pretty rare to find an auteur director these days because usually to be able to be an auteur director, a director has to have a full control, from the cast, the visual and the music, of the the movie that they make. Second, in addition to creating his own storyboard, he will then review every single animation cell that come out from the storyboard. It's not a rare occurrence that he will re–do the animation cells if he deems that the artist's work is not up to his standard and the animation cell cannot properly depict his vision4. This way, Miyazaki has total control of all story and visual that appear in the final cut of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Only the scene where the Forest Spirit is finding his head and killing all the living things on earth stayed in my mind. I remember laying in my bed that night after watching the film thinking, "This movie is so scary... how nice will it be if this princess is a Disney princess." I have believed for a long time that if Princess Mononoke was produced by Disney, the film will be so much more successful. I say – After becoming a young adult and rewatching Princess Mononoke again, my old thought of the film, which was Princess Mononoke being produced by Disney will be more successful, has twisted. The style of Studio Ghibli provided the movie the unique, exciting, and memorable features. To be more specific, the fascinating and well–thought storyline was the most outstanding part of the film. How Hayao Miyazaki did not separate good and evil with a clear defined line; illustrated a deeper environmentalist message than Disney films; created an open ending which gives the audiences more space to imagine and contemplate, are all what made the film a big hit during the 1990s. In real life, people are not always bad or good. Humans' reactions depend on different situation. But that's not what humans have been doing. It's not bad people who are destroying forests." With problems such as pollution, deforestation, and global warming constantly on the rise due to human consumption, creative minds around the globe are incorporating these themes into their works to express their thoughts on these environmental issues. One of those works is "Princess Mononoke" directed by Hayao Miyazaki. In this animated film Miyazaki shines a light on the senseless destruction of the environment caused by humanity's desire for material goods. The core theme in "Princess Mononoke" is simply that if humans continue to mindlessly devastate the environment we will eventually exhaust all of our resources and destroy the planet. Many artists, authors, and directors have also dealt with this subject matter but the way Miyazaki directs and conveys this theme is what makes "Princess Mononoke" a truly unique movie. In this film, Miyazaki examines some of the impact and consequences of environmental destruction and employs techniques such as the personification of animals to argue that humans should have more respect and take care of the environment around them. "Princess Mononoke" takes place during an unspecified period in medieval Japan. The movie opens with a boar–like monster ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A childhood muse for me has become an inspiration piece of art by hayao miyazaki. Howl's Moving Castle has both captivated my imagination and taught me the power of good art. Not only does miyazaki's film speak to a societal issue, it also creates a perfect connect between the audience's reactions and the plot through complex characters and impressive cinematography. Hayao Miyazaki's film Howl's Moving Castle is about the journey of a young girl named Sophia. She worked in a hat shop before being cursed by an old witch seeking vengeance. The characters do not follow a strict guideline of good or evil but alternate according to the plot. Howl's character is one that alternates between the main character, the hero, soulless character, and the hopeless protagonist. He takes on a devilish form and is perceived as evil incarnate, but at the same time, Miyazaki maintains howl's character as one who is a victim of his own mistakes. Another character, the young boy, disguises himself as an old healer. Although he is just a boy, he takes on the role of a guardian of the castle, a wizard apprentice, and even a healer. The witch of the waste is at first given the role of a villain but moves on to take on that of an old crippled woman. She is portrayed as a heartless witch whose greed led her a path of darkness, but as her character develops, she too was a revealed to be a warm, amicable old woman. During his bath, Chihero had fallen into the giant tub with him, as the spirit helped her out, she felt a thorn stuck in the spirits body. She alerted the staff of the bath house, and with their help they managed to get the thorn out. Although Chihero's friends and enemies acted as catalysts to her transformation, she would not have been able to transform without her own strength and determination. For example, Haku had stolen something from Yubaba's sister, Zeniba, and Chihero took what he had stolen and returned it to Zeniba to clear his name. The journey to her house was very relaxed, but the old Chihero would not take the initiative and do it by herself. I'm standing in line at the OMSI empirical theatre with my sister and friend, I looked down at the ticket in my hands, and I got a surge of excitement throughout my body. I knew I was going to see one of the best movies in my entire life. I knew that everyone in that line was going to as well; reason being it was a Hayao Miyazaki movie, the founder of Studio Ghibli– one of Japan's biggest franchise. I could say I have never been acquainted with a soul who thought negatively towards these movies created by Hayao Miyazaki. He is a very thought–provoking being, someone who can make you inspired and passionate towards living and breathing. Not to mention each one of his key characters is a woman filled with independence and integrity, which so often is not, emphasized enough. Correspondingly, I looked down at my ticket a hundred times or more, the movie I was seeing was 'Porco Rosso'. The title may seem very strange in a sense, but this movie was a piece of art, so much so, when it ended I had tears streaming down my cheeks and I walked crying out the theatre. That is how much it moved me, but this isn't the only exclusive anime saga that has made me cried before, my sister being included in this culture as much as I am, together we watched 'Blood +' an anime romance. • 117. Spirited Away : Film Directed By Hayao Miyazaki Essay Spirited Away is film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The messages contained within Spirited Away are almost entirely steeped in symbolism. On the surface, the film can be seen as young girl that struggles through a terrifying situation while trying to maintain and develop her personal identity. This is indeed the story I believe Hayao Miyazaki intended to tell. However, there is symbolic representation behind almost every single character and object of the film. There are smaller metaphors contained inside the larger allegory. Admittedly, a lot of the base ideas I will explore in the proceeding text is not my own. However, I will use my own observations to expand upon this third–party's analysis, and make the argument my own. Other students so far have presented the symbolism of Spirited Away as portraying Miyazaki's criticism of Japanese culture during the 80s. This very well may be, and most likely is, the source material for the imagery of the film. However, my analysis is that of a much broader, general viewpoint of our lives as individuals. First, I want to establish that the larger allegory is the films plot. A young girl finding her identity through displays of hardship with hints of environmentalism and social problems. I believe hidden within this allegory is the imagery that the setting and characters are all smaller representations that build into the larger symbols that establish to film's general plot. The Ghost Town can be seen as our daily lives. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 121. Analysis Of Mihayao Spirited Away By Miyazaki Hayao... In a traditional or typical family, it is always understood that children are meant to and able to rely on their parents for both safety and emotional support. In the film by Miyazaki Hayao Spirited Away, we observe a family far from the traditional sense of the word. Much of this film is about a young ten–year–old girl who is forced to save herself and her parents from being forever stuck in a world separate of their own. The relationships she loses and gains form her into a different person than who she is in the beginning of the film. Susan Napier asserts in her book "Anime from Akira to Howl's Moving Castle" Chihiro is a bratty child with parents who seem to be detached with her and as we see in the film selfish and indulgent in their own desires (181). These factors all contribute to the development and relationships of Chihiro in the film as well as the idea of family. At the beginning of the film as Chihiro and her parents are driving to their new home in the countryside, we are introduced to the type of relationships and personality of the family members. Napier describes her parents as "disconnected from each other and their daughter" and Chihiro as a "whiny, sullen, and self–obsessed" child (181). Right off the bat we are able to see a significant difference in what a family is considered to be and how it is represented in the film. As mentioned before a family is meant to care for each other and parents are meant to care for their children especially, however perhaps because of these circumstances we are led on the journey of Chihiro's "evolution" from that of a spoiled child to a braver and assertive child. Upon getting lost in the forest by taking a shortcut, the father decides instead of trying to find their way back to the road, on exploring the mysterious tunnel and the mother follows, telling Chihiro to stay in the car while they go off to see what is on the other end. Already we see how different the role of the father is portrayed as someone who thinks of his own desires and being before that of his wife or daughter. In the traditional role of a father, he is the person who is the protector of his family and as such he is meant to put his family first. It is pointed out in Napier's book ... Analysis Of The Poem ' The River That The Boy Spirit ' She cleaned the spirit's dirty body and found out that the dirty things all came from human's rubbish that discharged into rivers and lakes (Napier, 2006). After Chihiro cleaned the spirit, this lets him not suffering from pollution. Then the spirit gave Chihiro some treasure that also showed Miyazaki's view that if people try to protect the nature, nature will also return something for humans (Napier, 2006). Another environmental concern in Spirited Away was a boy who used to be the spirit of a river near Chihiro's old town, but he forgot his name. And he was working in the spa center because the river was filled by human to build a highway (Reider, 2005). Miyazaki's view changed because his life changed at that time. Japan has developed quickly at that time especially the industry, but people ignored that some activities could harm the environment. Also, Napier stated Miyazaki explained that the inspiration for the river that the boy spirit was a personal experience of his own when he helped to clean a polluted river near his home (Napier, 2006). Miyazaki wanted to use the magic film to tell people the truth what they did. Their behaviors reflected their daily life that damaged the environment with no intention and also encouraged people to solve the problem in order to protect the environment. "We are often not aware of the richness and uniqueness of our cultural heritage – from stories, traditions, rites, designs and tales of the gods. Surrounded by high technology and its flimsy devices, children are more and more losing their roots. We must inform them of the richness of our traditions." Hayao Miyazaki I can't help but wonder how does Studio Ghibli's leading director Hayao Miyazaki draw on western sources and settings as well as Japanese history and traditions in two of Studio Ghibli's films: 'My Neighbour Totoro' and 'Spirited Away' ? With headquarters based in Koganei, Tokyo, Japan, Studio Ghibli is easily one of Japan's most famous animation studio's in the world and is known as "the Disney of Japan". It was founded June 15th, 1985 after the great success of 'Nausicaa of the valley of the wind' the studio is headed by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata even though they were uncertain as to whether the studio would find any success or crash and burn they had a vision to "blow a new wind through the anime industry" which was pretty ambitious to say the least but has certainly lived up to its name. Hence the clever name given to the studio by Miyazaki himself, Ghibli means "hot wind blowing through the Sahara Desert". The name was used for Italian scouting airplanes during World War II. Miyazaki, who has a great love for airplanes, named his studio after it. One thing that I think makes the studio stand out is not only its lovable characters and its ... • 133. Studio Ghibli 's Princess Mononoke, Directed By Hayao... Human civilization is linked with environmental destruction, and despite the many implemented laws to limit the pollution released into the environment, degradation persists because humans have enough influence to cause harm to the environment as shown with overdeveloped human settlements (Shea). Global warming is growing as a predominant problem that can affect future generations and to spread awareness films are incorporating a pro–environmental message. Studio Ghibli 's Princess Mononoke, written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, draws a connection between human greed and environmental consequences. The difference between this film and many other environmental films is that the supernatural forces of nature serve as a symbol of retaliation against humans ' actions instead of the consequences of those actions showing retribution. In "Animating Child Activism: Environmentalism and Class Politics in Ghibli's Princess Mononoke (1997) and Fox's Fern Gully (1992)", Michelle J. Smith and Elizabeth Parsons state that the film failed to properly show human run corporations as the direct cause of environmental disaster because the supernatural creatures are represented as the immediate cause. I believe, however, that the film appeal to the emotions of anger and hatred that began due to human actions and that have led to the overall negative impact on the environment. Analysis Of The Film ' The Tale Of The White Serpent ' Ever since watching Hayao Miyazaki's film, 'Spirited Away', I was enamoured with the art style aesthetics, smooth animation and storytelling. His work in Studio Ghibli had played a major part in my desire to work in animation and to create artistic and compelling stories. But it's not just me he has influenced and inspired, and it's in this essay that I will discuss how this illustrious individual has influenced and placed his mark in the animation world. Miyazaki had always had an interest in drawing in his youth. Though his fascination with animation had started during his high school years when he first watched the feature–length anime film, 'The Tale of the White Serpent'. And after joining a children 's literature club in college, his interest only grew. It was in 1963 after completing his degrees, that Miyazaki decided to pursue animation as a career and joined Toei Animation. There, he learned the basic fundamentals of animation and met up with his future collaborators, associates and even his future wife. He started off drawing key frames in the animations he worked on, making sure that the figures moved and transitioned smoothly. His skill and determination in creating such free–flow work had impressed his higher ups, and he was soon moved up from being an in–between artist, to becoming heavily involved with the Animators Union. Portrayal Of Female Characters Of Hayao Miyazaki 's Films The Portrayal of Female Characters in Hayao Miyazaki's Films By Muhammad Aiman Mohd Zin I remembered the first time I was introduced to one of Miyazaki's most prominent animation film, Spirited Away (2001). The film absolutely captured the essence of what a fantasy world should be. I was mesmerized by the characters, the style, the animation movement and the whole entire world. It was as if the world probably existed somewhere, hidden from the reality we live in. I was hooked with Miyazaki's work since then. The influences of Miyazaki's work has driven me to follow my dream as an animator. I realized that the reason why I love most of Miyazaki's work is because of his in–depth characters development. He managed to give life to the characters he created hence, making the viewer more connected with the story he directed. For my thesis, I will analyze how Miyazaki portrays female characters in his movies. The female character that I would analyze are from Miyazaki's film entitled Princess Mononoke (1997), Spirited Away (2001) and Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986). Princess Mononoke was one of the highest grossing film in Japan during the year it was released in 1997. The film is about a warrior named Ashitaka, who sets on a journey to find balance and peace between the struggle of the forest God and the human greed who consume its resources. Analysis Of My Neighbour Totoro The adventurous, visually enchanting animated Japanese movie, My Neighbour Totoro, by Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli released in 1988 in Japan, attempts to show the viewers the innocence and the sense of community in Japan before the prevalent industrialization and economic boom. The movie is set in the countryside away from the big industrialized cities. The main characters are the schoolgirl, Satsuki Kusakabe, and her younger sister, Mei Kusakabe. Their days are brightened thanks to the spirit of the forest, Totoro. Hayao Miyazaki, who is born in 1941, is incorporating his own childhood in the film. Furthermore, he focuses on the historical time the movie is set. Meanwhile, noting that the movie is made in 1988 which is during the period of the economic bubble, he reminds us of the simple Japan in the 1950s before the economic boom occupied the people of this country. In contrast to the past, people who live in the city area do not get involved with one another's business despite how Japan has practiced chonaikai for having an intimate sense of community within the neighbourhood ever since the revival of chonaikai after World War 2. Hayao Miyazaki is able to reveal this specific ambience of the Japanese community in the movie when the Kusakabe's neighbours, a young boy, and grandmother, come to help the Kusakabe family move into their 'new' old rotten house. It is also seen when all the neighbours nearby help Satsuki look for her lost sister. Although the neighbours do ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 149. Hayao Miyazaki Auteur Style Analysis Many people may have a specific style in which they like to dress. A woman might have a signature lipstick she enjoys wearing, a man might have a distinct cologne that stands out from the rest. Movies are not too far apart in comparison. Sometimes people find films more enjoyable than others, and often do not realize they come from the same director. The Auteur theory is a that defines the director as the sole author of the entire film, adding his or her own personal style. When it comes to the world of animation, director Hayao Miyazaki is a pioneer in auteur. His specific directorial style is seen in many of his films in which he manages to make films enjoyable to adults of all ages. Kiki's Delivery Service was one of director Miyazaki's ... Imminently, Kiki then rushes to her friend's aid even though she has lost her ability to fly. So, with a sense of purpose, Kiki takes a broom from a man in the middle of town and concentrates extremely hard to fly again. As said before, one of Miyazaki's key traits of his auteur is his use of the environment. At that moment, Kiki tries to physically and emotionally connect with the wind to fly. The wind is calm at first but then busts out a gust of air shooting Kiki into the sky. The incident Tombo is in makes it possible only for Kiki to save him since no one else can reach him. Under this circumstance, the town watches in horror waiting for the boy to be saved. Then, Tombo's hand slips from the rope of the blimp and begins to fall where Kiki saves him just time in midair. As a result, Kiki the strong female lead saves her friend after overcoming her self–doubt. All of this took place in an ordinary town, the wind contributed in helping Kiki gain her confidence back. Which concluded with a great original story. Overall, specific examples of Miyazaki's auteur style were seen in the climax scene of Kiki Delivery Service. In terms of content, Studio Ghibli is a universe apart. Founded in 1984 by founder and world renowned director Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli has for decades since its establishment churned out iconic films known for their beautifully drawn frames and fantastical plots, nearly all of which star strong, intelligent, independent–minded female protagonists. This trend can be traced all the way back to Miyazaki's first feature length animated film titled Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, which debuted in theaters in Japan May of 1984. This was the same decade Disney released The Little Mermaid (1989) in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another of Ghibli's films, Princess Mononoke (1997), made emphatic this archetype. Mononoke is a movie about the warrior–princess San, who lives amongst wolf–gods and attacks the human villages that threaten her forest home; it is certainly not a film about a damsel in distress as are many Western films centered around a female lead. San is best described as an independent, ferocious, wild, but also virtuous individual. The prince and princess characters never enter into the realm of romance either in Mononoke, an occurrence very much contrary to the typical love–story arc that drives numerous other animated movies (Aladdin, Snow White, The Little Mermaid, etc). In fact when San first meets Ashitaka, the prince from a human village, she is sucking poison from the gunshot wound of a giant wolf and spitting blood into a river. She never swoons nor falters, but stares covered in blood and tells him to "go away." Even later in the story when Ashitaka calls her beautiful, she recoils. "What is it, San?" asks one of the wolf–gods. "Want me to crunch his face off?" In her interactions with Ashitaka, San is indeed obstinate but later is forced to confront her human identity.
