Steve Jobs Argumentative Essay
Evasion of Controversial Topics in Jobs
The film Jobs, directed by Joshua Stern and written by Matt Whiteley, was created in 2013–notably
after Steve Jobs' death ("Jobs (2013)"). The motion picture details Steve Jobs' life from attending
college to the creation of the iPod at Apple. Jobs' personal life is outlined by his major conflicts such
as the birth of his illegitimate child and being removed as CEO of Apple. The story is told through
the eyes of Steve Jobs. The film Jobs inaccurately portrays Jobs' work and life by leaving out
important details, in order to avoid controversy.
Chiefly, the writer avoids shedding light on Apple's scandals. In defence of his actions, Arthur Rock
reasons, "Don't make me the villain for looking out for the company's best interests," ("Jobs"). For
the majority of the film, Rock is the primary antagonist. He is the single thing standing in the way of
Jobs in his ventures–almost as if he was a literal rock. He seemingly follows the coincidental
symbolism in his name, as a rock is not evil, just in the way. Arthur Rock is surprisingly not
displayed doing a single illegal thing. In all reality, Apple was involved in a backdating scandal that
was never mentioned. Backdating is an illegal action where stock prices are manipulated and
"invariably involves lying to investors creating false documentation, and avoiding the earnings hit
required for giving employees in–the–money grants," (Elkindy). There was a full internal
investigation inside Apple and the SEC under terms of backdating. Jobs was exonerated, but others
at Apple were proven guilty (Elkindy). Detailing such a scandal would shed negative light on Apple
as a whole. The fact that all of Apple's employees are displayed with the best intentions during the
movie is naive and untrue. In actuality, there were illegal practices in use.
Additionally, the film comes to a close before any controversy arises. The audience is left with Jobs'
concluding statement: "We're going to make Apple cool again," ("Jobs"). This ending was clearly
selected. Not only does this statement end the story on a positive note, but it leaves an unanswered
question: is he successful and how did he do it? The answer to this question is subjective. The film

Analysis Of Dorothea Tanning's Birthday
Being associated with the surrealist movement, and more specifically, an elite group of surrealists,
Dorothea Tanning stands out. Her desire to create both poetry and paintings which can be
interpreted as having no exit, is what makes her works different from other surrealists. With the
ambition to create a piece that is interpreted as having no exit, Dorothea Tanning's Birthday, 1942
the painting exemplifies an illusion of power and isolation. This self–portrait, Birthday by Dorothea
Tanning is amongst her first works. Kimmelman referred to the painting saying, "Birthday is one of
Dorothea Tanning's earliest works, and is considered her first mature painting" (Kimmelman 1). She
painted her self–portrait while she was in New York. It caught the eye of her future husband, Max
Ernst and sparked his initial attention to her. In fact, Max Ernst suggested the name "Birthday" for
this piece. The unique aspects that Dorothea Tanning incorporates into this painting such as, the
unconscious as a reality, and relationships with the unnatural, inspired her later works. They also
flag her as a surrealist, "being a surrealist and having a fixation on the mind, Tanning is able to use
her preoccupation with eroticism to create exciting, dramatic imagery to display passages from one
reality to another" (Grimberg 59). Her fixation on the mind, is evident in this painting when she
creates a relationship between viewers and the woman in the self–portrait. Birthday from 1942, is an
oil on canvas self–portrait. The painting's prominent subject is a woman who is standing alone to the
left of the canvas. She is dressed uniquely in a dark brown ruffled skirt that reaches all the way to
her calves. On the sides of her skirt, there is an abundance of vine–like roots overflowing from the
back towards the front. Her top is an open, purple, green, and white decorative jacket; revealing her
bosom, chest, and some of her torso. With her left hand, she is holding onto a knob of one of the
many doors that are behind her; yet she is looking off in a different direction from these doors. The
woman wears no shoes, and to the right of her feet is an animal that looks like a combination of a
cat and bat. The creature has big yellow eyes and a

Self Driving Cars : Good Or Bad For Humans
Self–driving Cars: Good or Bad for humans
Each generation, has given something to humanity, that the majority of us, thought was impossible,
and no way is it going to happen. Some people believe that self–driving cars is good for the future
and others think it will make us depend on technology too much. In all truth self–driving cars, has a
lot of potential and unanswered questions: Google has been demonstrating its driverless technology
over the past few years by bringing computerization into what has, for over a hundred years, been
solely a human activity (Driving an automobile). It has done this by retrofitting Toyotas, Lexus's
and Nissan with cameras and sensors. "Major car manufactures already market and sell high–end
vehicles with features like automated braking self–parking, lane– departure warning, and variable
speed cruise control."(Guerra) there is no doubts about self–driving cars have potential but the
technology has serious questions to address. "With the news that driverless cars are coming to our
roads, should we be discussing what will happen when the cars has to choose between the safety of
its occupant and the safety of the road users." (Wise) Will the car drive itself off a bridge to avoid an
accident? Or run into the side walk to avoid hitting a pedestrian are all the serious questions brought
up by people.
Self–driving cars have the potential to change transportation by "providing transportation options

Descriptive Essay : Mud Tortillas
Mud Tortillas Thinking about it now I don't know if this is a mental image or a picture. I really don't
know. The image is so well known yet so distant. Kinda like it 's being erased from my brain. I
guess its time doing its thing. I visualize the image in a blurry 480p quality. Taken with an early
2009 camera with a mix of bad lighting. The picture is about me. The boy maybe 4, 5 or even six,
stands with his hands loosely fitted over his lap. Two parallel bricks rest on rich earthy brown soil
beneath him. He is surrounded by scattered trees which are in need desperate of springs love and
nourishment. And right behind him there 's a mound of dark logs that have settled into a sadden
state. The background that surrounded me all seemed to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The courtyard was in itself was an instance in means of contrast. Almost in the same way that a
sandy beach contrasts with the deep marine waters. Furthermore, the courtyard had its own identical
form of beauty. Just like the sandy beach gleams in the sun. Similarly, the courtyard glistened with
the dry dirt that ran onto its shore. The place was far more longer than it was wide. It was almost
three or four times longer than it was wide. The wooden logs blocked your view straight on only
allowing you to see above them, and directly above where staggering dark evergreen pines, which
stood colossal making you feel alien to your own premises. As hard as I can remember the, the
backyard had always been the setting of my childhood. I recall the time a pregnant cat moved into
the logs and made home. She had a bunch of babies. I can also recall the tree house my dad had
built in the middle of the yard and also the pumpkin that naturally sprung to life. This backyard was
really something else. One of the most vivid and outstanding memories of my childhood occurred in
the backyard. When I was younger, I went to a festival. At this festival, I remember my parents had
bought me an orange shiny helium balloon. Within minutes I would have let it go into the vast
night, which shined with scattered lights. Only to go home and wake the next day to find it in the
crevices of the dam that lay in the backyard. It had run low on helium and had already fallen was

Making The American Workforce A Friendly Place For Women...
We all had a teacher in school who took maternity leave. This standard, dictated by the 1993 federal
Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), applies not only to teachers but to women of all
professions and allows mothers to take up to twelve weeks of protected, but unpaid leave (Cohn 9).
This period, however, is not long enough for the mother and child to fully recover. Providing longer
maternity leaves would also benefit businesses and the American society. Many countries around the
world provide significantly longer leaves or even allow fathers to take paid paternity leaves. Making
the American workforce a friendly place for women and families through revised maternity leave
policies will benefit both the U.S. economy and U.S. families.
Incomes in the U.S. are currently falling, particularly among low–income families. Because one
income is no longer enough to support the family, it is now necessary for many women to bring
home a paycheck as well. (Warner 27). Having young children while working is difficult for many
women in the U.S. workplace. In fact, thirty–five percent of U.S. women have cited work and
family balance as their largest, single concern (Appelbaum and Milkman 8). For this reason, many
developed countries around the world devote resources to providing for their young families
because they are aware of the role that women play in sustaining the country. In 2014, eleven
countries provided at least one hundred weeks of protected leave and the majority of

Grief, Loss, And Loss

Grief, Loss, and Everything Josh Kos would Floss (this is not the actual title)
Grief and loss are some of the most defining characteristics of the human experience. Therefore,
dealing with grief and loss is one of the most important things humans must learn. While there are
many approaches, Jennifer Kent uses her film The Babadook to suggest that suppression is not a
healthy way to deal with grief. By thoughtfully planning the mise–en–scene, soundtrack, and
narrative storytelling, Kent teaches viewers that suppression causes the inner monster to come out in
all of us, just as it did to Amelia in The Babadook.
In The Babadook, suppression of grief is at the root of all of Amelia's personal problems.
Suppressing her grief resulted in her becoming isolated from everyone around her, from her co–
worker Robby, her sister Claire, to even her son Sam. Because she was so wrapped up in
suppressing memories of her husband, Amelia lost touch with the living world, and is left in an
awkward limbo between her past and her present. Once the Babadook is unleashed, suppression of
grief leads to paranoia for Amelia. As she continues to have visions, Amelia is trapped in a different
limbo between reality and inside her mind, and as she continues to suppress her grief, her situation
becomes progressively worse.
Amelia's house and the tree across the street from Amelia's house are important motifs throughout
The Babadook. However, while trees and

How I Missed Quality Time With The Children
There are two types of people in the world, separated by whether or not they have had "the
moment." The first type goes along thinking about how busy they are, or how much happier they
would be if they could afford a new car or a bigger house, worrying and trying to work harder, earn
more, do more. That used to be me: Working more hours to make more money to get more things. I
missed quality time with the children because I was working, always working. I worked about 12
hours a day and even when I was home, my attention wasn 't all there. My middle daughter, Sara,
will never forget that I didn 't show up for her awards assembly when she was 8. I don 't even
remember missing it. I was focused on making enough money. Enough for a pool table, enough for
a hot tub, enough for unnecessary things that humans want. The second type of people seem to
spend all their time having one celebration or another, going on trips at a moment 's notice, always
doing things together, seemingly living irresponsibly. We, now, are (mostly) the latter. Our moment
came along 7 years ago this month. This time of year always brings back the memories, although the
pain diminishes each time. It was November 2, 2007, a day that is seared forever, irrevocably in our
minds. It started out as a typical evening. Our oldest son, Brandon, had a friend over. Sara was
having a sleepover with two of her friends. Our oldest daughter, Heather, was working at the local
pizza joint, my husband, Keith, had just come in

Dadaism And Surrealist Movement : Max Ernst
Although there are significant distinctions between Dadaism and Surrealist movement in their focus
of interest in exploring the language and the art, they also happen to have similar concept for
groundbreaking the norms and sometimes makes it hard for people to differentiate them. Then, here
is an artist who manage to cover and is considered to be one of the pioneers for both Dadaism and
Surrealism: Max Ernst. Due to the traumatic army experience during the World War 1, Ernst became
highly critical of the western culture. His experience of the brutality of the world critically
influenced his later works to become quite absurd, yet interesting like those of other Dadaists. In
terms of relationship between the word and the image, Ernst created the so–called fatagaga, or
Fabrication de Tableaux Gasometriques Garantis, which meant the combination of the artists to
create an artwork including imagery and text. These Dadaist collaborative works deemphasized the
importance of individual authorship and allowed the artists' interactions to further development of
Dadaism.
Later in his life, Ernst was influenced by the Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis theory, and was
involved in the Surrealist movement. His works during the Surrealist period are characterized by his
exploration of possibilities of bizarre titles to generate ambiguity and openness to multiple
interpretations. "Ernst employed words not in order to anchor meaning or to provide clarifying
description, but rather as elusive

Communication Skills in Jhumpa Lahiria´s A Temporary Matter
In Jhumpa Lahiria's "A Temporary Matter" the married couples relationship went up in smoke
because the relationship lacked communication skills resulting in Shoba giving birth with out
Shukumar, who was at an academic conference in Baltimore. Despite Shoba telling Shukumar to go
on his business trip, he should have stayed and helped Shoba incase she went into labor, which is
more likely to happen closer to the due date. Shukumar should have stayed with his wife which is
what most people in a relationship would feel like it's the right thing they should do. Even though
Shoba had insisted it was important to make contacts, and reminded him he would be entering the
job market next year. He shouldn't have taken the chance because deep down Shoba would like for
him to cease a great opportunity in going to Baltimore but when she goes into labor great
opportunities goes out the window and she would be looking for Shukumar to help her through he
process that was taking place. As you read in the story you can see that this is a relationship that is
going through the struggle that a young relationship would go through. Shoba is 33 and took on
more hours at work and also more projects which means she doest get home until late some days
which doesn't matter because there is nothing for her to do when she gets home except making
corrections to text, with the color code she came up with, in her book. Shukumar is 35 years old and
is in his sixth year of graduate school. He has been doing

Yesterday's Tomorrow
"I know you're there... i'm waiting for you..."
"Are you scared yet?"
No! You're not real.
Did you hear that? I've been hearing the voices for weeks. Help me please. Get me out of this
insanity.
"Are you ok?" My coworker asks, eyebrows creased with a look of concern. "You've been doing this
all week? The nervous sweating and rocking back and forth is really making me nervous." She said,
a teasing smile forming across her face.
You have no idea. I think to myself.
" You are insane." The voice whispers in my ears. Ringing throughout my head, reminding me of
my true madness. No matter how much I deny it.
It started weeks ago. I wish I could say sooner. But it's only gotten worse, and worse, and worse. I
woke up to an ordinary morning, but with ominous tension in the air. An evil lurking pressure
surrounding me everywhere I went.
Everything is ok, it's just a strange feeling everything is fine. I reminded myself that morning. How
wrong I was.
No everything is fine. Relax, everything is normal.
I woke that morning with the eerie sense in the air. I got ready. I went to work. Came home. Ate
dinner. Simple. Then, I lay in bed that night not able to shake off the sense that I was being watched.
Something, or someone was watching me. I would drift in and out of a hazy sleep. Between the
nightmares of my insanity and the strangeness of my house, I didn't get much sleep that night. I
began to dream in a way that I couldn't tell the difference between reality and

A Brand New Therapy
Cellatroniks is a brand new therapy in the United Kingdom, although it has been practiced in the
United States for 25 years by its founder Teddy Gagnan. Also called dynamic energy therapy, it
boosts energy fields in the body, which in turn strengthens the immune system and enhances the
body 's healing capacity. According to Trick Or Treatment: The Undeniable Facts about Alternative
Medicine by Simon Singh, Edzard Ernst, The therapy works by sending invisible and soundless
energy waves into the body via key points – the hands, feet, back of the neck, chest, shoulder and
abdomen. A central machine stores different programmes for enhancing different parts of the body
or body systems – for example, there are programmes for the kidneys, the endocrine system, the
digestion, the eyes, the legs and the circulation. Patients sit in a comfortable chair and the energy is
fed into the body via a flat metal plate known as an enhancer. Some patients feel a warmth
spreading from the plate, others say they feel no sensation. Laboratory tests have shown that once
the energy is passed into the body differences can be found in the brain waves; patients report
feeling relaxed and later energized. Teddy Gagnan describes the treatment as 'a food for the body ',
supplying energy where it is deficient. This in turns helps to achieve balance in the body, enabling it
to combat disease and disorder. Cellatroniks technology is currently being used to treat cancer, MS
and diabetes in the United

Monologue Of Mrs. Whittlesworth's Writings
Unfortunately, I have been unwell. The last week has allowed the great English weather to take its
toll upon me. I arrived at my lodgings yesterday in such a condition that my landlady, Mrs
Whittlesworth reenacted all the actions of an old mother hen. Dressed in her usual attire of black
poke bonnet, tied tight around her many chins and an ill–fitting black tea dress, she flapped around
me to the point of exhaustion. She then remonstrated on the state of weather we are having, and my
lack of a good woman to take care of me. After being marched to the parlour fire, she sat me down
and plied me with two or three mulled gins. By that time, what with her bluster, the gin and my

Ernst's Art
As a Surrealist pioneer, Ernst's art displayed some of the most radical and unorthodox imagery in
the early 1920s. Violence and pain were perhaps the most avant–garde elements of Ernst's art, and
this perception is on full display in one of Ernst collages displayed during Breton's Paris Au Sans
Pareil exhibition, The Preparation of Bone Glue. It depicts "a diathermy process in which an
electrical current treats joint ailments" (Kavky 2012); his use of violence and pain as "both cause
and cure intensifies the victimization of the woman" (Kavky 2012). The Preparation of Bone Glue is
widely considered as an early example of Surrealist art, and Ernst's early work with the mentally ill
provided significant influence into the troubled minds of some patients.
From a personal perspective, Massacre of the Innocents, released in 1920, represents one of the
more unique and grotesque representations; the imagery in the collage is akin to a modern–day
crime scene. Ernst made ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Various sources quote Breton as expressing "unparalleled admiration" (Susik 2011) and "Surrealism
found immediate confirmation in [Ernst's] collages from 1920, which reflect a completely new
concept of visual organization" (Spies, et al. 2005). Furthermore, one article described this moment
in Surrealist art "as central to the movement's research into psychoanalytic theory and the
development of its visual practice" (Kavky 2012). The impact of Ernst's contributions motivated
Breton to pen a brief essay entitled "Max Ernst" reflecting Breton's "bald enthusiasm for Ernst's
unique brand of collages" (Susik 2011); Breton practically wrote the essay overnight "following the
unpacking of Ernst's crate of collages" (Susik 2011). Furthermore, Breton called Ernst "one of the

The Importance Of Holocaust Revisionism
In 1990, during a poll conducted in a single state among a group of seniors in high school, it was
found 50% of the students were unable to provide any information about the Holocaust (Lang
2010). The idea that so many students are unaware of such a violent and heinous crime is
incomprehensible. As many students in high schools ask today, why is it important to learn about
history? The answer is history provides society a way to look back and evaluate previous mistakes.
Particularly with the Holocaust, it is important to look back and identify warnings to prevent another
Holocaust from occurring. However, looking back is hard to do when Holocaust Revisionism is
attempting to rewrite the history of the Holocaust. Therefore, Holocaust Revisionism is a threat to
societal morality by believing that the Jewish population holds immense international power and
disregarding extensive evidence of the Holocaust. Foremost, to fully develop this hypothesis a
requirement is to understand what revisionism means, the Holocaust, and societal morality.
Revisionism, per the Bloomsbury Guide to Human Thought (1993), is "the ... Show more content on

argue claims based on faulty logic and evidence the ability to disprove these claims to revisionists
becomes harder and harder. If Holocaust Revisionists succeeded in disproving the Holocaust,
society would no longer be able to fully educate the next generation on how to prevent future
genocides. Being unable to discuss and learn about the Holocaust as a historical event undermines
the foundations of society's morality by inhibiting society's ability to prevent disastrous

rocks that is easier to keep a grip on than the pure glass, your feet keep slipping trying to get there.
You fall on your hands and knees to keep yourself from tumbling all the way down to the bottom. In
some of your stumbles you keep knocking rocks loose from the path. When they are ripped out of
the glass hill by your foot there are cracks where there used to be rock and smooth glass. You know
if you knock too many rocks out of place that the glass hill will shatter and that the house on top of
the hill will follow, leaving only shards of destruction. I have put so much work into putting myself

descent, saw Sally sitting under one of the trees in the front yard. Sally found out Abraham was a
doctor who was married to Victoria and had three kids. The bodies of his family were discovered a
month after they died when they have been reported missing. The authorities found them lying
neatly on their beds either strangled or smothered with a pillow...except for Joseph. The youngest
child was found inside the broom closet under the stairs with a broken neck. It seemed he woke up
in the middle of the night, saw what was happening and ran to the closet to hide. Abraham found
him when he heard a whimper coming from under the stairs. He forced it open and broke his neck.
No one knows what happened to Abraham, a few believe he went in hiding, still, others think he
killed himself somewhere in the house...his body was never found.
Chapter 8
Packing as fast as she could, Sally almost felt the joy of relief the semester break offered. She was
going home. As she rode her car and maneuvered the pathway, she stopped to take one last look at
the house and all the miseries it holds. Glancing up, she saw a man looking out the small window in
the attic watching her leave. Now, at last, she knew who he was...and she knew too she was not

Self-Development In The Veldt By Ray Bradbury
Ray Bradbury's, "The Veldt" warns dependence on technology can get in the way of our own self–
development. In "The Veldt", it shows us how technology can slow our personal development and
take control of our lives. For example, when the Hadley's bought the "smart" home, they knew it
was technologically advanced and would make life simpler. At this point in the story, the Hadley's
are realizing how dangerous the nursery and house is. "'But I thought that's why we bought this
house, so we wouldn't have to do anything?'" (Bradbury 2). The house is able to do anything for the
Hadley family. Knowing when the Hadley's bought the house, they did not realize how much
damage it could cause. The family feels they need to buy the home to help them, but it turned out
that they were severely damaged by it and ready to get out. Technology dependence is at an all–time
high now. In the article, "Medical Experts Say Addiction to Technology Is a Growing Concern" it
shows the growing concern of people becoming addicted to technology. Experts are calling it
"digital heroin" and "electronic cocaine" because the addiction is so bad. People are spending at
least twenty–five hours on their phone a week and check their phones on average of two hundred
times a day. For instance, in Ray Bradbury's, "The Veldt", the Hadley's have given their children and
themselves a home that does everything for them. '"We've given the children everything they ever
wanted. Is this our reward–secrecy, disobedience?"'

The Healthsouth Corporation Inc.
INTRODUCTION The HealthSouth Corporation was started in 1984 by Richard Scrushy with
hopes of becoming one of the largest healthcare companies in the country. It was doing quite well
by 1996 with a market value of nearly $12 billion and was one of the United States largest
healthcare firms. This all fell apart in 2003 when it was discovered that Scrushy and his employees
had committed fraud in the estimated range of almost $2.7 billion (Daigle, Louwers and Morris
887). Scrushy, over the years, had brought on many new faces to the company. Many of these
employees were friends of Scrushy from previous business ventures and business meetings. These
employees and the others involved in the fraud were given the name 'family'; highly due to the fact
that they all knew what was happening and not one wanted to go to the authorities to confess. It was
after the fraud had gone on for nearly six years that the former CFO Weston Smith tipped off federal
investigators.
Following the actions by Smith, the four other CFO's who ran the company during the fraud came
forward which included: Aaron Beam Jr., Michael Martin, Malcom McVay, and then current CFO
William Owens. Along with the CFO's their staff members who were also in on the fraud also came
forward bringing the total number of involved to fifteen. Also the Birmingham Alabama office of
Ernst & Young came under heavy scrutiny for auditing HealthSouth during the fraud and failing to
take action on any evidence they found.

Themes In John Steinbeck's East Of Eden
Choice can be defined as the act of selecting or making a decision when faced with multiple
possibilities. In John Steinbeck's East of Eden, the motifs of houses, hands, and money reflect how
the pattern of good and evil repeat due to the reoccurring theme that one has the right to choose. In
the novel, each house displays unique qualities specific to a character and their personality. For
example, when Adam came upon Cathy's whorehouse, he almost missed it if not for the "vein of
light" that was being emitted from the window seal (315). The vein of light depicts Cathy's
secretiveness and lack of conscience. The light is shallow, like her superficial mask that she shows
others in order to manipulate them. On the contrary, the Trask's ... Show more content on

Therefore showing, Cathy had no liking of Samuel or her children and could not stand to be cared
for. She had a way of destroying the life of anyone who crossed paths with her, and by biting
Samuel's hand, caused his livelihood to decline. Comparatively, later on in life Cathy ends up with
the "fingers of both hands [constantly] bandaged", due to severe arthritis (192). Cathy lived her life
always harming others, with no guilt or regret and this was her punishment. This signifies that she
was feeling the burden of all her wrongdoings and finally was no longer in control. In short, the
description of a character's hands is highly influential on how they are perceived and their actions
interpreted.
The characters' view on money reveals how they use their ambition to gain love from others, while a
few do so through generosity. For instance, during Thanksgiving, Adam emphasized that he didn't
ship the lettuce to New York "for a profit," but as a game to see if he could succeed in providing
people with fresh lettuce (543). When Cal tried to give Adam the money to make up for the losses,
Adam refused because his conscience wouldn't allow him to take the money. Adam is morally
disturbed because he just wants to aid others and places no true value in money. On the other hand,
all Cal was doing was "trying to buy"Adam's love (543). Adam refusing Cal's gift, made it seem that

A Short Story : A Story?
Once upon a time, there lived a boy. Although he went to a good school, he was not a good student,
for he spent all his hours and all his days on the computer playing video games, enveloped in his
own world. From the moment school ended until early in the morning, he would sit at his desk for
hours and hours on end, pushing away his study material away and promising completion, but to no
avail. Fingers flying over the keyboard, he did not relent until a large VICTORY graced his
bloodshot eyes. Not even as the end of the year cumulative assessment slowly approached like a
hawk about to snatch its prey, did he pick up his books. Day after day, his procrastination knew no
limit until his final exam was less than 48 hours away. "Auhg," The boy jolted awake, eyes darting
left and right. Light flooded into his room as Apollo made his routine journey across the morning
sky. Lured by the promise of a hearty breakfast, he stumbled downstairs. Suddenly, like a lightning
bolt hurled by Zeus himself, it struck him. "wHaTEv3R shALl i d0??????? Woe !s mE Oh DeAR

The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros Essay example
The House on Mango Street, is written by Sandra Cisneros. Sandra Cisneros was born and grew up
in Chicago. She was raised by her mother and father who were both of Mexican descent. She grew
up in a relatively large family; she was the third child out of seven children. Cisneros' childhood
consisted of her growing up in one of Chicago's Puerto Rican neighborhoods. As a child she also
traveled back and forth to Mexico with her family. Understanding Cisneros' background is important
for understanding the novel because the main character in the novel, Esperanza, shares many
similarities and almost resembles Cisneros.

The family's new home is located in the center of a crowded Latino neighborhood in Chicago, also
very similar to the up–bringing of Cisneros. Chicago is important to the setting of the story and to
understanding the underlining meanings, because Chicago is a city where many of the poor areas are
racially segregated. As soon as she arriving to her new home Esperanza promises herself that she
will someday leave Mango Street and have a house all her own, a house which resembles the
American dream, white fence, and huge yard. During the year covered in the novel Esperanza
matures significantly, both in a sexual and emotional manner. The novel as it is broken into chapters,
short stories, almost charts and illustrates her life as she makes friends, develops her first crush, and
endures sexual assault. The charting of Esperanza life is mainly done through the stories of many of
Esperanza's neighbors. The stories giving a full picture of the neighborhood and the life which
Esperanza is living on a day to day basis. It's interesting because many of the stories, specially of
the women in Esperanza's neighborhood, allows the reader to assume that the lives of these women,
which include abuse, male dominance, and lack of freedom are all possible outcomes and paths of
Esperanza's future. After moving to the house, Esperanza quickly becomes friends with Lucy and
Rachel, two girls whom are also Mexican–American and who live only across the street from her.

Visual Communication : Emanuele Dascanio
Vision is a crucial aspect of human existence, and the way that it enables them to understand the
world is even more crucial. The human ability to see can influence beliefs if one is to take a step
back and examine vision as a whole. This can be done easily with artwork as the messages that
artists send are powerful due to the fact that interpretations of meaning depend on the beliefs and
attitudes of the specific individual. One artist, Emanuele Dascanio, is an artist whose work
demonstrates numerous aspects of visual communication. The works are intriguing because of the
hyperrealistic feel they embody. There is a pull and desire for one to engage with the works because
they are not abstract pieces but extremely real and detailed ones. While many people may strongly
appreciate the talent of Dascanio's work, few take time to consider the reasons that people react the
way they do to them. The reason for such a strong connection between both drawing and viewer
comes from all of the elements that come together to compose the image.
The connection that people feel to Dascanio's work is a powerful one since his drawings are the
extremely captivating. This is not solely because of the pure talent put into each piece, but the
numerous qualities depicted within each work. Each piece of artwork is an icon, which according to
Arthur Asa Berger, "is a sign that looks like or resembles the thing it stands for" (How, 1998). By
looking at Dascanio's drawings, even for a

Lehman Brothers Case Study
Lehman Brothers Holdings, Inc. (Case 1.2)
Case Summary
When Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy in September 2008 it was the largest corporate filing in
our country's history. Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. declared $639 billion in assets and $613
billion in debt (Florescu, 2017). The filing of Lehman Brothers bankruptcy created a mass panic in
the financial markets which caused an economic shockwave in both the U.S and foreign markets.
Lehman's collapse aggravated global financial markets for weeks, due to the size of the company
and its status as a major player in the United States as well as internationally (Florescu, 2017).
Lehman Brothers made massive dollar amount transactions which heightened the company's overall
net leverage ratio, which is an important metric when determining the overall financial position a
company sustains. In 2007, Lehman Brothers operating numbers were extremely encouraging to the
naked eye. The executives at Lehman Brothers however knew the company was in an extremely
vulnerable position that investors were oblivious to, which was that they had bought billions of
dollars in residential mortgage–backed securities. Management was under a great amount of
pressure to come up with a resolution for solving this problem, at the same time the U.S housing
market bubble was busting. The executives at Lehman Brothers elected to reduce the company's net
leverage ratio in a marginally unethical manner. This improvised tactic involved engaging in a large

Analysis Of David Irving 's ' The Crucible '
David Irving has made many public speeches in which he denies the use of gas chambers by Nazis
to murder Jews; however, he does not consider himself a denier or a liar. Irving considered
accusations of him being a Holocaust denier to be wrong and damaging, so on September 5, 1996,
he took Deborah Lipstadt to court on the grounds of libel because she had according to Irving;
wrongly accused him of being a denier. Irving is notorious because even though the judge ruled in
favor of Lipstadt, he still argued that he was right and did not accept the undeniable fact that the

Even though many still see the election of Trump to the presidency as a positive event, hate crimes
are occurring more at an alarming rate which causes us to regress every day to mimic the past.
Since the election of Trump, hate crimes have seen an increase of 6% which is alarming given that
in the past hate crimes have been decreasing according to the FBI and SPLC. Some areas that saw
the biggest surge were hate crimes among Muslim Americans, transgendered people, Jews, and
African–Americans. Some believe that the spike in hate crimes is because of the country 's extreme
opposing views on topics causing a divide between citizens which was motivated by President–elect
Trump. Supporters and believers of Trump 's extreme views have been taking Trump 's statements
and applying them literally by lashing out against different ethnicities, races, and genders because of
what they are, what they believe in, and who they supported during the election. An example of a
hate crime occurring because of statements made by Trump against Muslims is the letter a mosque
in California got calling for genocide. Some of the more colorful parts of the letter stated that
"Muslims are a vile and filthy people", "your day of reckoning has arrived", and "He's (Trump)
going to do to you Muslims what Hitler did to Jews" (Holly 3). This letter is obviously motivated by
religious hatred towards Muslims and is calling for action against them. It clearly follows the

Surrealism And Surrealism
In 1925, the original surrealists forged a clear and resounding document, stating, among other
things, that the surrealist movement is a revolution, unarguably. They asserted that their movement
was not one of poetic form. Furthermore, that it was not even a literary movement. They firmly
established, in the infancy of Surrealism, that it was not an aesthetic endeavour. It was "a revolution
of the mind." Surrealist actions and thoughts function "in the absence of any aesthetic or moral
concern." This idea was thoroughly tested with the many events to come. It was tested when
Salvador Dali went so far with a lack of moral concern as to support Hitler himself, earning himself
an excommunication, after a characteristically dramatic trial. It was tested when Andre Breton,
honorary founder of Surrealism, stated that "The purest surrealist act is walking into a crowd with a
loaded gun and firing into it randomly." This has since, regrettably, been forgotten. We have
forgotten, somehow, the broken bones, the muddied faces, the chaos, and the legitimate taboos in
which Surrealism languished. We have forgotten how, historically, we have stared in the face that
which no one else dared to glance at. We have cast aside that which hurts us, for we do not care to
include it in our reality. We have also become much more tolerant, since Breton's death in 1966, of
that which is not actually surrealist. At the risk of sounding anti–progress, I say that the movement
has become less pure

Expressionism : An International Artistic And Literary...
To understand Surrealism, we must first look at Dadaism, the art movement from which Surrealism
stems. Dadaism was an international artistic and literary movement which began in 1916 and lasted
until the mid 1920s. Artists involved in the Dada movement were experimental and controversial.
They constantly pushed and broke the boundaries of what art is defined as and what art–making
could be. They used chance based procedures and unconventional materials such as collages and
photo–montages created from newspapers, advertisements and political propaganda. They also
embraced poetry, music and performance art. The art movements prior to Dadaism, including

(See Visual 2) The title explains how this work was created – Arp tore up pieces of paper and let
them fall on to a background before sticking them down. The anarchistic and unpredictable way in
which this piece was created illustrates the typical mindset of a Dada artist and the movement itself.
Soon after arriving in Zurich, the Dada movement spread to New York, Berlin, Hamburg and
Cologne, before it finally erupted in Paris. The leader of the Dada movement in Paris was a poet
named Andre Breton. Breton is an important figure as he would go on to become the leader of the
Paris Surrealist movement as well.
Andre Breton served as a nurse during the first world war where he treated many soldiers who
suffered from shell shock as a result of the traumatic environment of the trenches and war zones.
One of the soldiers he came across deeply influenced him. This soldier believed that the war was
fake and that the government was using fake smoke, weapons and blood in order to convince him
that the war was taking place.
Breton concluded that the mind has an incredible power to see altern realities other possibilitites.
Breton began to use ideas from the famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud to help treat his patients –
in particular Freud's 'Interpretations of Dreams' from 1900. In this book, Freud proposed the idea of
the unconscious mind and the irrational things which stem from it – slips of the tongue, dreams,
strange meetings and weird. Like the

throughout the conversation. "Fucking bitch. She probably can't even make golden thread. That's all
she probably is, a fake." "That's all you're doing. Faking everything so you'll get attention and
sympathy." Eleanor's whole body goes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her body aches when she's awake. It kills her mother when she drinks too much. She can't stay
sober for a day. She's giving everything to numb the burns, addicted to the losing fight. She looks
vacant but the wheels still turn. She could be singing this tonight. I wanna touch the northern lights.
We could leave the world behind. I wanna know what it's like; to walk away from this life." New
words fill Eleanor's head. Walker gently whispers the song into Eleanor's ear. That's new, most
people prefer to keep their distance, but Walker gets nice and personal. He keeps an arm around
Eleanor, even when her shaking grows stronger. The room is too cold, yet too hot and Eleanor wants
to scream. Her eyes are closed, but she can feel the room spinning. There's no air and Eleanor's
panic shifts from her past to the present. She can't get air, air that she needs. This is it, she thinks,
this time I'm going to die. Walker continues to speak into her ear, but the words don't make sense.
Instead, Eleanor puts all her focus into breathing. Its several long minutes until the panic subsides.
Acid burns Eleanor's throat and she rushes to the connecting

How To Write A Narrative About Moving Away
Sarah The wind was blowing and leaves were falling, it was fall. It was my favorite time of year. I
stood out on my front porch and soaked up the fall breeze and the pumpkin spice smells. Everything
was perfect and for a moment it felt like there was nothing wrong with my life. Then I heard her, it
was my Mom. "Sarah!" she yelled. "Yes Mom?" I responded. "Come inside and start packing," she
said. "Okay i'll be inside in a minute," I said back That's when it hit me, my life wasn't all happy and
great at all. We just recently lost all our money because my Dad stole money from where he works
and now he has to pay for what he did. Since me and my Mom have no money we are forced to
move out of our amazing house in Alabama. My Mom says that since we have to move anyways we
should move far away from here, she says it would be best for our family to not be around my Dad.
She still hasn't figured out all the details to where we're moving but it won't be close. Im standing in
the airport and then finally my Mom tells me where we have decided to move to. Cleveland, Ohio.
I've never even heard of this place but, I guess i'm about to get to know it very well. We grab our
baggage and hop in the rental car and my mom starts driving. The house is nothing, i'm telling you
nothing like my house in Alabama, it's small, worn down and the inside smells so bad. This new
house and new town is going to take a lot of getting used to. My Mom tells me that it's all going to
turn out just fine but,

Personal Narrative : The Runaway
The Runaway Since I can remember, I have always had a wild imagination. I remember staring off
into space for long hours, which really had only been a few minutes, imagining what it would be
like to fly. To sprout large angelic wings from my back and take off out of the open windows of my
small classrooms. Or what it would be like to grow a set of gills and live my life under the sea with
all the fish and dolphins. None of my friends ever seem to think quite like I do; imagine the same
way I did. None of them spend as long staring off into the blank nothingness as my mind wanders
beyond the realms of existence. My second grade year, I finally began to realize that this was a gift
God had graced me with. The ability to imagine beyond what ... Show more content on

West is a tall, thin boy; always covered in bruises from the many sports he played. He stands high
above my mother and I, though he is only in the ninth grade. He barged into the tiny kitchen, now
crowded by the three of us. "That's not a real job! No one would read anything YOU wrote!" he
shouted loudly as three others about his size, maybe even bigger, attempted to slither into the
kitchen, but resulted to just opening the curtains due to the lack of room in the kitchen. I felt hot
tears sting my eyes as they fell down my cheek and onto the floor with the forgotten water from the
dishes. My mother looks between the two of us and shakes her head, sighing loudly. I knew from
that sigh, she was going to choose West's side. She always chose his side, generally because he's
always right. "Go outside." her voice was lower than before, barely above a light whisper. West rolls
his eyes, pushing the three other boys back into the living room and out of the back screen door that
separated the blazing heat of the outdoors from the cool interior of the house. Mother turns back to
me, wrinkles in her forehead, as if she were thinking of a way to let me down easily. "Sara," she
began, raising her voice enough for it to be considered a normal volume, "your brother is right." She
takes a breath as if she were going to say more, but I don't stick around to listen. Storming from the
room, I grab my backpack, shoving assorted

Driving Cars Are On The Way
Self–driving cars are on the way. Soon, you'll be able to purchase a fully autonomous vehicle, jump
in and leave the driving to computers. Play games, read a book or recline your seat and nap – your
self–driving car will transport you safely to your journey's end.
Autonomous driving features such as adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist are already
included in many new vehicles, offering motorists a harbinger of what's to come.
By 2020, the first fully autonomous vehicles are expected to deploy on America's roadways.
Consumers, however, are not sharing the same enthusiasm owned by self–driving proponents of
autonomous vehicle technology. Indeed, three out of four Americans surveyed by AAA say that they
are "afraid" to ride in a self–driving vehicle.
Decades of Autonomous Vehicle Testing
Before we examine the AAA survey, we need to gain context based on background.
Experiments on self–driving vehicles have been ongoing for decades. For example, beginning in the
1980s, a German researcher at a Munich university, Ernst Dickmanns, built the world's first robotic
car. Those earlier models required human intervention to control engine throttle and braking. By
1995, Dickmanns' team launched the first fully autonomous vehicle, a Mercedes–Benz S–Class and
inaugurated it on a 1,000–mile round tripper from Munich to Denmark and back, including nearly
100 miles of human–free control.(2)
That watershed mission was accomplished without incident and led to other

Steve Jobs Argumentative Essay

  • 1. Steve Jobs Argumentative Essay Evasion of Controversial Topics in Jobs The film Jobs, directed by Joshua Stern and written by Matt Whiteley, was created in 2013–notably after Steve Jobs' death ("Jobs (2013)"). The motion picture details Steve Jobs' life from attending college to the creation of the iPod at Apple. Jobs' personal life is outlined by his major conflicts such as the birth of his illegitimate child and being removed as CEO of Apple. The story is told through the eyes of Steve Jobs. The film Jobs inaccurately portrays Jobs' work and life by leaving out important details, in order to avoid controversy. Chiefly, the writer avoids shedding light on Apple's scandals. In defence of his actions, Arthur Rock reasons, "Don't make me the villain for looking out for the company's best interests," ("Jobs"). For the majority of the film, Rock is the primary antagonist. He is the single thing standing in the way of Jobs in his ventures–almost as if he was a literal rock. He seemingly follows the coincidental symbolism in his name, as a rock is not evil, just in the way. Arthur Rock is surprisingly not displayed doing a single illegal thing. In all reality, Apple was involved in a backdating scandal that was never mentioned. Backdating is an illegal action where stock prices are manipulated and "invariably involves lying to investors creating false documentation, and avoiding the earnings hit required for giving employees in–the–money grants," (Elkindy). There was a full internal investigation inside Apple and the SEC under terms of backdating. Jobs was exonerated, but others at Apple were proven guilty (Elkindy). Detailing such a scandal would shed negative light on Apple as a whole. The fact that all of Apple's employees are displayed with the best intentions during the movie is naive and untrue. In actuality, there were illegal practices in use. Additionally, the film comes to a close before any controversy arises. The audience is left with Jobs' concluding statement: "We're going to make Apple cool again," ("Jobs"). This ending was clearly selected. Not only does this statement end the story on a positive note, but it leaves an unanswered question: is he successful and how did he do it? The answer to this question is subjective. The film ... • 2. Analysis Of Dorothea Tanning's Birthday Being associated with the surrealist movement, and more specifically, an elite group of surrealists, Dorothea Tanning stands out. Her desire to create both poetry and paintings which can be interpreted as having no exit, is what makes her works different from other surrealists. With the ambition to create a piece that is interpreted as having no exit, Dorothea Tanning's Birthday, 1942 the painting exemplifies an illusion of power and isolation. This self–portrait, Birthday by Dorothea Tanning is amongst her first works. Kimmelman referred to the painting saying, "Birthday is one of Dorothea Tanning's earliest works, and is considered her first mature painting" (Kimmelman 1). She painted her self–portrait while she was in New York. It caught the eye of her future husband, Max Ernst and sparked his initial attention to her. In fact, Max Ernst suggested the name "Birthday" for this piece. The unique aspects that Dorothea Tanning incorporates into this painting such as, the unconscious as a reality, and relationships with the unnatural, inspired her later works. They also flag her as a surrealist, "being a surrealist and having a fixation on the mind, Tanning is able to use her preoccupation with eroticism to create exciting, dramatic imagery to display passages from one reality to another" (Grimberg 59). Her fixation on the mind, is evident in this painting when she creates a relationship between viewers and the woman in the self–portrait. Birthday from 1942, is an oil on canvas self–portrait. The painting's prominent subject is a woman who is standing alone to the left of the canvas. She is dressed uniquely in a dark brown ruffled skirt that reaches all the way to her calves. On the sides of her skirt, there is an abundance of vine–like roots overflowing from the back towards the front. Her top is an open, purple, green, and white decorative jacket; revealing her bosom, chest, and some of her torso. With her left hand, she is holding onto a knob of one of the many doors that are behind her; yet she is looking off in a different direction from these doors. The woman wears no shoes, and to the right of her feet is an animal that looks like a combination of a cat and bat. The creature has big yellow eyes and a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Self Driving Cars : Good Or Bad For Humans Self–driving Cars: Good or Bad for humans Each generation, has given something to humanity, that the majority of us, thought was impossible, and no way is it going to happen. Some people believe that self–driving cars is good for the future and others think it will make us depend on technology too much. In all truth self–driving cars, has a lot of potential and unanswered questions: Google has been demonstrating its driverless technology over the past few years by bringing computerization into what has, for over a hundred years, been solely a human activity (Driving an automobile). It has done this by retrofitting Toyotas, Lexus's and Nissan with cameras and sensors. "Major car manufactures already market and sell high–end vehicles with features like automated braking self–parking, lane– departure warning, and variable speed cruise control."(Guerra) there is no doubts about self–driving cars have potential but the technology has serious questions to address. "With the news that driverless cars are coming to our roads, should we be discussing what will happen when the cars has to choose between the safety of its occupant and the safety of the road users." (Wise) Will the car drive itself off a bridge to avoid an accident? Or run into the side walk to avoid hitting a pedestrian are all the serious questions brought up by people. Self–driving cars have the potential to change transportation by "providing transportation options for the elderly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Descriptive Essay : Mud Tortillas Mud Tortillas Thinking about it now I don't know if this is a mental image or a picture. I really don't know. The image is so well known yet so distant. Kinda like it 's being erased from my brain. I guess its time doing its thing. I visualize the image in a blurry 480p quality. Taken with an early 2009 camera with a mix of bad lighting. The picture is about me. The boy maybe 4, 5 or even six, stands with his hands loosely fitted over his lap. Two parallel bricks rest on rich earthy brown soil beneath him. He is surrounded by scattered trees which are in need desperate of springs love and nourishment. And right behind him there 's a mound of dark logs that have settled into a sadden state. The background that surrounded me all seemed to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The courtyard was in itself was an instance in means of contrast. Almost in the same way that a sandy beach contrasts with the deep marine waters. Furthermore, the courtyard had its own identical form of beauty. Just like the sandy beach gleams in the sun. Similarly, the courtyard glistened with the dry dirt that ran onto its shore. The place was far more longer than it was wide. It was almost three or four times longer than it was wide. The wooden logs blocked your view straight on only allowing you to see above them, and directly above where staggering dark evergreen pines, which stood colossal making you feel alien to your own premises. As hard as I can remember the, the backyard had always been the setting of my childhood. I recall the time a pregnant cat moved into the logs and made home. She had a bunch of babies. I can also recall the tree house my dad had built in the middle of the yard and also the pumpkin that naturally sprung to life. This backyard was really something else. One of the most vivid and outstanding memories of my childhood occurred in the backyard. When I was younger, I went to a festival. At this festival, I remember my parents had bought me an orange shiny helium balloon. Within minutes I would have let it go into the vast night, which shined with scattered lights. Only to go home and wake the next day to find it in the crevices of the dam that lay in the backyard. It had run low on helium and had already fallen was just low enough for me to ... • 5. Making The American Workforce A Friendly Place For Women... We all had a teacher in school who took maternity leave. This standard, dictated by the 1993 federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), applies not only to teachers but to women of all professions and allows mothers to take up to twelve weeks of protected, but unpaid leave (Cohn 9). This period, however, is not long enough for the mother and child to fully recover. Providing longer maternity leaves would also benefit businesses and the American society. Many countries around the world provide significantly longer leaves or even allow fathers to take paid paternity leaves. Making the American workforce a friendly place for women and families through revised maternity leave policies will benefit both the U.S. economy and U.S. families. Incomes in the U.S. are currently falling, particularly among low–income families. Because one income is no longer enough to support the family, it is now necessary for many women to bring home a paycheck as well. (Warner 27). Having young children while working is difficult for many women in the U.S. workplace. In fact, thirty–five percent of U.S. women have cited work and family balance as their largest, single concern (Appelbaum and Milkman 8). For this reason, many developed countries around the world devote resources to providing for their young families because they are aware of the role that women play in sustaining the country. In 2014, eleven countries provided at least one hundred weeks of protected leave and the majority of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Grief, Loss, And Loss Jaehun Lee D Block, Film Studies 10/16/16 Grief, Loss, and Everything Josh Kos would Floss (this is not the actual title) Grief and loss are some of the most defining characteristics of the human experience. Therefore, dealing with grief and loss is one of the most important things humans must learn. While there are many approaches, Jennifer Kent uses her film The Babadook to suggest that suppression is not a healthy way to deal with grief. By thoughtfully planning the mise–en–scene, soundtrack, and narrative storytelling, Kent teaches viewers that suppression causes the inner monster to come out in all of us, just as it did to Amelia in The Babadook. In The Babadook, suppression of grief is at the root of all of Amelia's personal problems. Suppressing her grief resulted in her becoming isolated from everyone around her, from her co– worker Robby, her sister Claire, to even her son Sam. Because she was so wrapped up in suppressing memories of her husband, Amelia lost touch with the living world, and is left in an awkward limbo between her past and her present. Once the Babadook is unleashed, suppression of grief leads to paranoia for Amelia. As she continues to have visions, Amelia is trapped in a different limbo between reality and inside her mind, and as she continues to suppress her grief, her situation becomes progressively worse. Amelia's house and the tree across the street from Amelia's house are important motifs throughout The Babadook. However, while trees and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. How I Missed Quality Time With The Children There are two types of people in the world, separated by whether or not they have had "the moment." The first type goes along thinking about how busy they are, or how much happier they would be if they could afford a new car or a bigger house, worrying and trying to work harder, earn more, do more. That used to be me: Working more hours to make more money to get more things. I missed quality time with the children because I was working, always working. I worked about 12 hours a day and even when I was home, my attention wasn 't all there. My middle daughter, Sara, will never forget that I didn 't show up for her awards assembly when she was 8. I don 't even remember missing it. I was focused on making enough money. Enough for a pool table, enough for a hot tub, enough for unnecessary things that humans want. The second type of people seem to spend all their time having one celebration or another, going on trips at a moment 's notice, always doing things together, seemingly living irresponsibly. We, now, are (mostly) the latter. Our moment came along 7 years ago this month. This time of year always brings back the memories, although the pain diminishes each time. It was November 2, 2007, a day that is seared forever, irrevocably in our minds. It started out as a typical evening. Our oldest son, Brandon, had a friend over. Dadaism And Surrealist Movement : Max Ernst Although there are significant distinctions between Dadaism and Surrealist movement in their focus of interest in exploring the language and the art, they also happen to have similar concept for groundbreaking the norms and sometimes makes it hard for people to differentiate them. Then, here is an artist who manage to cover and is considered to be one of the pioneers for both Dadaism and Surrealism: Max Ernst. Due to the traumatic army experience during the World War 1, Ernst became highly critical of the western culture. His experience of the brutality of the world critically influenced his later works to become quite absurd, yet interesting like those of other Dadaists. In terms of relationship between the word and the image, Ernst created the so–called fatagaga, or Fabrication de Tableaux Gasometriques Garantis, which meant the combination of the artists to create an artwork including imagery and text. These Dadaist collaborative works deemphasized the importance of individual authorship and allowed the artists' interactions to further development of Dadaism. Later in his life, Ernst was influenced by the Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis theory, and was involved in the Surrealist movement. His works during the Surrealist period are characterized by his exploration of possibilities of bizarre titles to generate ambiguity and openness to multiple interpretations. The nervous sweating and rocking back and forth is really making me nervous." She said, a teasing smile forming across her face. You have no idea. I think to myself. " You are insane." The voice whispers in my ears. Ringing throughout my head, reminding me of my true madness. No matter how much I deny it. It started weeks ago. I wish I could say sooner. • 11. A Brand New Therapy Cellatroniks is a brand new therapy in the United Kingdom, although it has been practiced in the United States for 25 years by its founder Teddy Gagnan. Also called dynamic energy therapy, it boosts energy fields in the body, which in turn strengthens the immune system and enhances the body 's healing capacity. According to Trick Or Treatment: The Undeniable Facts about Alternative Medicine by Simon Singh, Edzard Ernst, The therapy works by sending invisible and soundless energy waves into the body via key points – the hands, feet, back of the neck, chest, shoulder and abdomen. A central machine stores different programmes for enhancing different parts of the body or body systems – for example, there are programmes for the kidneys, the endocrine system, the digestion, the eyes, the legs and the circulation. Patients sit in a comfortable chair and the energy is fed into the body via a flat metal plate known as an enhancer. Some patients feel a warmth spreading from the plate, others say they feel no sensation. Laboratory tests have shown that once the energy is passed into the body differences can be found in the brain waves; patients report feeling relaxed and later energized. Teddy Gagnan describes the treatment as 'a food for the body ', supplying energy where it is deficient. This in turns helps to achieve balance in the body, enabling it to combat disease and disorder. Dressed in her usual attire of black poke bonnet, tied tight around her many chins and an ill–fitting black tea dress, she flapped around me to the point of exhaustion. She then remonstrated on the state of weather we are having, and my lack of a good woman to take care of me. • 14. Ernst's Art As a Surrealist pioneer, Ernst's art displayed some of the most radical and unorthodox imagery in the early 1920s. Violence and pain were perhaps the most avant–garde elements of Ernst's art, and this perception is on full display in one of Ernst collages displayed during Breton's Paris Au Sans Pareil exhibition, The Preparation of Bone Glue. It depicts "a diathermy process in which an electrical current treats joint ailments" (Kavky 2012); his use of violence and pain as "both cause and cure intensifies the victimization of the woman" (Kavky 2012). The Preparation of Bone Glue is widely considered as an early example of Surrealist art, and Ernst's early work with the mentally ill provided significant influence into the troubled minds of some patients. From a personal perspective, Massacre of the Innocents, released in 1920, represents one of the more unique and grotesque representations; the imagery in the collage is akin to a modern–day crime scene. Furthermore, one article described this moment in Surrealist art "as central to the movement's research into psychoanalytic theory and the development of its visual practice" (Kavky 2012). The impact of Ernst's contributions motivated Breton to pen a brief essay entitled "Max Ernst" reflecting Breton's "bald enthusiasm for Ernst's unique brand of collages" (Susik 2011); Breton practically wrote the essay overnight "following the unpacking of Ernst's crate of collages" (Susik 2011). The Importance Of Holocaust Revisionism In 1990, during a poll conducted in a single state among a group of seniors in high school, it was found 50% of the students were unable to provide any information about the Holocaust (Lang 2010). The idea that so many students are unaware of such a violent and heinous crime is incomprehensible. As many students in high schools ask today, why is it important to learn about history? The answer is history provides society a way to look back and evaluate previous mistakes. Particularly with the Holocaust, it is important to look back and identify warnings to prevent another Holocaust from occurring. However, looking back is hard to do when Holocaust Revisionism is attempting to rewrite the history of the Holocaust. Therefore, Holocaust Revisionism is a threat to societal morality by believing that the Jewish population holds immense international power and disregarding extensive evidence of the Holocaust. For example, when the Hadley's bought the "smart" home, they knew it was technologically advanced and would make life simpler. At this point in the story, the Hadley's are realizing how dangerous the nursery and house is. "'But I thought that's why we bought this house, so we wouldn't have to do anything?'" (Bradbury 2). It was doing quite well by 1996 with a market value of nearly $12 billion and was one of the United States largest healthcare firms. This all fell apart in 2003 when it was discovered that Scrushy and his employees had committed fraud in the estimated range of almost $2.7 billion (Daigle, Louwers and Morris 887). Scrushy, over the years, had brought on many new faces to the company. Many of these employees were friends of Scrushy from previous business ventures and business meetings. These employees and the others involved in the fraud were given the name 'family'; highly due to the fact that they all knew what was happening and not one wanted to go to the authorities to confess. Following the actions by Smith, the four other CFO's who ran the company during the fraud came forward which included: Aaron Beam Jr., Michael Martin, Malcom McVay, and then current CFO William Owens. • 22. Themes In John Steinbeck's East Of Eden Choice can be defined as the act of selecting or making a decision when faced with multiple possibilities. In John Steinbeck's East of Eden, the motifs of houses, hands, and money reflect how the pattern of good and evil repeat due to the reoccurring theme that one has the right to choose. In the novel, each house displays unique qualities specific to a character and their personality. For example, when Adam came upon Cathy's whorehouse, he almost missed it if not for the "vein of light" that was being emitted from the window seal (315). The vein of light depicts Cathy's secretiveness and lack of conscience. The light is shallow, like her superficial mask that she shows others in order to manipulate them. Cathy lived her life always harming others, with no guilt or regret and this was her punishment. This signifies that she was feeling the burden of all her wrongdoings and finally was no longer in control. In short, the description of a character's hands is highly influential on how they are perceived and their actions interpreted. The characters' view on money reveals how they use their ambition to gain love from others, while a few do so through generosity. For instance, during Thanksgiving, Adam emphasized that he didn't ship the lettuce to New York "for a profit," but as a game to see if he could succeed in providing people with fresh lettuce (543). When Cal tried to give Adam the money to make up for the losses, Adam refused because his conscience wouldn't allow him to take the money. • 26. Visual Communication : Emanuele Dascanio Vision is a crucial aspect of human existence, and the way that it enables them to understand the world is even more crucial. The human ability to see can influence beliefs if one is to take a step back and examine vision as a whole. This can be done easily with artwork as the messages that artists send are powerful due to the fact that interpretations of meaning depend on the beliefs and attitudes of the specific individual. One artist, Emanuele Dascanio, is an artist whose work demonstrates numerous aspects of visual communication. The works are intriguing because of the hyperrealistic feel they embody. There is a pull and desire for one to engage with the works because they are not abstract pieces but extremely real and detailed ones. While many people may strongly appreciate the talent of Dascanio's work, few take time to consider the reasons that people react the way they do to them. The reason for such a strong connection between both drawing and viewer comes from all of the elements that come together to compose the image. The connection that people feel to Dascanio's work is a powerful one since his drawings are the extremely captivating. This is not solely because of the pure talent put into each piece, but the numerous qualities depicted within each work. Each piece of artwork is an icon, which according to Arthur Asa Berger, "is a sign that looks like or resembles the thing it stands for" (How, 1998). By looking at Dascanio's drawings, even for a ... • 30. Lehman Brothers Case Study Lehman Brothers Holdings, Inc. (Case 1.2) Case Summary When Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy in September 2008 it was the largest corporate filing in our country's history. Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. declared $639 billion in assets and $613 billion in debt (Florescu, 2017). The filing of Lehman Brothers bankruptcy created a mass panic in the financial markets which caused an economic shockwave in both the U.S and foreign markets. Lehman's collapse aggravated global financial markets for weeks, due to the size of the company and its status as a major player in the United States as well as internationally (Florescu, 2017). Lehman Brothers made massive dollar amount transactions which heightened the company's overall net leverage ratio, which is an important metric when determining the overall financial position a company sustains. In 2007, Lehman Brothers operating numbers were extremely encouraging to the naked eye. The executives at Lehman Brothers however knew the company was in an extremely vulnerable position that investors were oblivious to, which was that they had bought billions of dollars in residential mortgage–backed securities. Management was under a great amount of pressure to come up with a resolution for solving this problem, at the same time the U.S housing market bubble was busting. The executives at Lehman Brothers elected to reduce the company's net leverage ratio in a marginally unethical manner. This improvised tactic involved engaging in a large ... Since the election of Trump, hate crimes have seen an increase of 6% which is alarming given that in the past hate crimes have been decreasing according to the FBI and SPLC. Some areas that saw the biggest surge were hate crimes among Muslim Americans, transgendered people, Jews, and African–Americans. Some believe that the spike in hate crimes is because of the country 's extreme opposing views on topics causing a divide between citizens which was motivated by President–elect Trump. Supporters and believers of Trump 's extreme views have been taking Trump 's statements and applying them literally by lashing out against different ethnicities, races, and genders because of what they are, what they believe in, and who they supported during the election. An example of a hate crime occurring because of statements made by Trump against Muslims is the letter a mosque in California got calling for genocide. Some of the more colorful parts of the letter stated that "Muslims are a vile and filthy people", "your day of reckoning has arrived", and "He's (Trump) going to do to you Muslims what Hitler did to Jews" (Holly 3). • 34. Surrealism And Surrealism In 1925, the original surrealists forged a clear and resounding document, stating, among other things, that the surrealist movement is a revolution, unarguably. They asserted that their movement was not one of poetic form. Furthermore, that it was not even a literary movement. They firmly established, in the infancy of Surrealism, that it was not an aesthetic endeavour. It was "a revolution of the mind." Surrealist actions and thoughts function "in the absence of any aesthetic or moral concern." This idea was thoroughly tested with the many events to come. It was tested when Salvador Dali went so far with a lack of moral concern as to support Hitler himself, earning himself an excommunication, after a characteristically dramatic trial. It was tested when Andre Breton, honorary founder of Surrealism, stated that "The purest surrealist act is walking into a crowd with a loaded gun and firing into it randomly." This has since, regrettably, been forgotten. We have forgotten, somehow, the broken bones, the muddied faces, the chaos, and the legitimate taboos in which Surrealism languished. We have forgotten how, historically, we have stared in the face that which no one else dared to glance at. We have cast aside that which hurts us, for we do not care to include it in our reality. We have also become much more tolerant, since Breton's death in 1966, of that which is not actually surrealist. At the risk of sounding anti–progress, I say that the movement has become less pure ... Dadaism was an international artistic and literary movement which began in 1916 and lasted until the mid 1920s. Artists involved in the Dada movement were experimental and controversial. They constantly pushed and broke the boundaries of what art is defined as and what art–making could be. They used chance based procedures and unconventional materials such as collages and photo–montages created from newspapers, advertisements and political propaganda. They also embraced poetry, music and performance art. The art movements prior to Dadaism, including Impressionism, Fauvism and Cubism, were concerned with artists developing their talents, ... Soon after arriving in Zurich, the Dada movement spread to New York, Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne, before it finally erupted in Paris. The leader of the Dada movement in Paris was a poet named Andre Breton. Breton is an important figure as he would go on to become the leader of the Paris Surrealist movement as well. Andre Breton served as a nurse during the first world war where he treated many soldiers who suffered from shell shock as a result of the traumatic environment of the trenches and war zones. One of the soldiers he came across deeply influenced him. This soldier believed that the war was fake and that the government was using fake smoke, weapons and blood in order to convince him that the war was taking place. Breton concluded that the mind has an incredible power to see altern realities other possibilitites. Breton began to use ideas from the famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud to help treat his patients – in particular Freud's 'Interpretations of Dreams' from 1900. Play games, read a book or recline your seat and nap – your self–driving car will transport you safely to your journey's end. Autonomous driving features such as adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist are already included in many new vehicles, offering motorists a harbinger of what's to come. By 2020, the first fully autonomous vehicles are expected to deploy on America's roadways. Consumers, however, are not sharing the same enthusiasm owned by self–driving proponents of autonomous vehicle technology. Indeed, three out of four Americans surveyed by AAA say that they are "afraid" to ride in a self–driving vehicle. Decades of Autonomous Vehicle Testing Before we examine the AAA survey, we need to gain context based on background. Experiments on self–driving vehicles have been ongoing for decades. For example, beginning in the 1980s, a German researcher at a Munich university, Ernst Dickmanns, built the world's first robotic car. Those earlier models required human intervention to control engine throttle and braking. By 1995, Dickmanns' team launched the first fully autonomous vehicle, a Mercedes–Benz S–Class and inaugurated it on a 1,000–mile round tripper from Munich to Denmark and back, including nearly 100 miles of human–free control.(2) That watershed mission was accomplished without incident and led to other ...
