We would not be going to see marvel movies in theaters, and would not be able to communicate to each other. Thomas Edison legacy he left behind was
his inventions and the room for improvement of those inventions. Even to this day humans are continually advancing technology through means of
using electricity and communication. None of this would be possible without the great mind of Thomas Edison. In hospitals today they use a form of
his X–ray technology to help find serious problems in patients. Doctors are able to save millions of people's lives due to Edison's invention and
experiment in X–ray technology. Thomas Alva Edison is the single most significant figure in American history. He shaped and modernized the way
America was and now is today. The book captures every detail in Edison's life from his struggles to his dreams. If Thomas Edison would have never
have become an inventor life as we know it would not exist

The Spinning Jenny: Centuries Of Change
Centuries of Change
The past holds several inventions that would greatly impact the future worldwide. The invention of the spinning jenny allowed clothing to be produced
faster, the telephone allowed there to be communication between people be held at different locations, and the radio helped news and entertainment be
broadcast to many people all at the same time. All these inventions are still used today only in more modern and updated forms. All three of these
inventions sped up the pace of life and helped make life more convenient.
The Spinning Jenny was a multiple spindle machine which was used for spinning wool and/or cotton. The hand powered invention from the spinning

Inventions: Most Important In US History
1.What inventions do you think have been most important in U.S. history and why?
a.In my opinion, the automobile and the utilization of electricity have been two of the most important inventions in United States history. The
invention of the car expanded our horizons in the fact that citizens were able to travel, but also because people could live in places other than the city.
Also, the utilization of electricity has become a part of life that we would not know how to live without. Electricity has allowed for businesses and
homes to run in a convenient and efficient manner. Without electricity, we as a nation would have very little technology.

In my opinion, Obama was saying that these values were something that could not always be expressed through words, but rather through actions. As
a result of having these qualities, we were, and will continue to be, able to make progress as a country. I believe that the quality of honesty is the most
important in making progress. If two people have a different understanding of a situation due to dishonesty, they will not be able to work together to
find a solution and make progress.
6.President Obama noted that Americans faced a "new era of responsibility." Why do you think his words and vision have connected with so many
Americans?
a.I believe that his words have connected with so many Americans because they show that we as a nation are making progress. His words demonstrate
to the public that we are going to experience change that in the end, will help our country become stronger.
7.Obama was elected in 2008; how do you think people will explain this time period 100 years from now? How do you think this time period is
similar to or different from other eras in American history?
a.I believe people will view this era as a period of reform. We are working through a great deal of social issues like gay marriage, legalization of
marijuana and even racism. In my opinion, this compares greatly to the 1960s where civil rights took center stage. This was an era full of protests and
violence that somehow all worked out for the greater good of the

Short Story Morg The Greatest Inventors Of All Time
Garret Morgan is easily one of the greatest inventors of all time. Morgan was born on March 4, 1877, in Paris, Kentucky to two former slaves
Sydney Morgan and Elizabeth Reed Morgan. Morgan left his home at the age of fourteen and ended up in Ohio, where began to work finding odd
jobs till he was able to save up enough money and start a business of his own. Morgan opened his own tailoring shop where he fixed sewing machines,
and he eventually expanded it to clothing made from the sewing machines he built. Garret Morgan loved working with his hands and experimenting
with new machines and products. In 1912 Morgan developed the "safety hood" which would eventually be known as the gas mask, it had a hood with
an insert for fresh air and an exit for exhaled air; it was also connected to a tube in the back, which was an open end that contained a water–soaked
sponge, the sponge would filter out smoke and so fresh air could get in. Because Garret Morgan was African American, the gas mask was not widely
accepted, particularly in the south. Garret had to hire a white male to pose as the "inventor" of the safety hood; he himself would act as a test dummy
during the presentations of the product. This worked in Morgan's favor the presentations skyrocketed the sales of the safety hood, especially among
police and firefighters.
The great importance of the safety hood was not fully understood until 1916 when workers building a tunnel in Lake Erie hit a pocket of natural gas,
this caused an

Inventions and Ideas Of The 1960's
Have you ever wondered where some of the most important things in our lives come from or who made them? The 1960's was one of the most
influential decades ever with so many new inventions and innovations. Some of the best inventions were made in the 1960's. Most of the inventions
that were made then are still used today. The 1960's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of the technological inventions were, The handheld calculator, ram chip, compact disk, basic computer language, A.T.M, computer mouse,
barcode scanner, and ARPANET. The handheld calculator was invented by Jack Kilby who referred to it as "Caltech" and is still used in schools
today. Another invention that revolutionized this era was the ram chip invented by Robert Dennard January, 1 1968 which allows you to randomly
save information to a computer chip in random sequence. " Inventions sprouted up through the entire decade in the U.S" (" Famous Inventions Of
The 1960's"). Another invention was the barcode scanner which was made by NCR Corp. January 1, 1969 is of course still used and made a very
heavy impact in american lives even today. Everytime you go to the grocery store and you check out they have to scan the barcode on the item for the
price, so it is still very relevant. Without these technological advancement and inventions where would we be

Genetic Based Diagnostic Patents
Introduction Technology enriches our society by making widely available new and useful goods, services, and technical information . Clearly, as a
society, we would want to encourage the development of technology so that we can reap the benefits they offer us. Innovators require an incentive to
invent and share these technologies with the rest of society. This incentive is achieved by granting intellectual property rights (IPR) to inventors . More
specifically, the incentive is usually achieved by granting patents to inventors . Patents are governed under a Federal statute in Canada, the Patent Act .
The act sets out the criteria that an invention must meet in order to be patentable , as well as exclusions to patentable subject matter . There ... Show

law shows this is not the view the Judiciary holds, thus Human genes ultimately do not meet the non–obviousness

Mothers Of Invention : Women Of The American Civil War
Mothers of Invention: Women of the Slaveholding South in the American Civil War is a work by Drew Gilpin Faust, a renowned American historian
and current President of Harvard University. Published in 1996 by the University of North Carolina Press in Chapel Hill, this is one of the several
literary works by Faust describing history of the Civil War and of the American South. This nonfiction book includes 257 pages detailing the struggles
and labors of the women on the Southern home front during the American Civil War, as well as 67 pages of notes, a bibliographic note, and an index.
The book illustrates the hardships of wives and their children during the war and describes many changes they endured throughout the nineteenth
century.

As their social class and society disintegrated around them, some women struggled to manage slave–worked planting fields or command female
households, while others performed paid jobs in schools as teachers, in hospitals as nurses, and government occupations across the Confederacy. Lizzie
Neblett, a Texan housewife, for example, gained more pivotal duties in a short span of time than she ever had in her entire life, she found strenuous
labor especially cumbersome physically and mentally.
Another hardship of the war was the strain it placed on married life. Men and women alike faced troubles with their significant others during wartimes
because of the lack of intimacy, heavy turmoil, and a burdening depression overlaying the nation. Consequently, however, the expression of emotions
previously overlooked before the outbreak of conflict between spouses was encouraged through martial separations caused by the war. Husbands and
wives faced loneliness on a daily basis, which in effect led them to display compassion and caring towards each other as they witnessed the
dreadfulness of war. This separation also caused a growth in feminine education and style, further forging the foundations for a new, individual
American woman.
Gathering from diaries, newspapers, letters, memoirs, and biographies, Faust depicts specific effects of the American Civil War on southern women,
the antebellum social hierarchy of the Confederacy, and the overall upheaval of lives

The Cost Of Computers And Television 's Impact On Society
Computers have been around for what seem like decades, it's a way of life if nothing else we rely on it so much in our daily life. It wasn't always
like this our computer technology has been advancing astronomical. When once computers were seen as a simple calculator for simple calculations.
We valued them as they were specialized machines for each person and each person could have a different experience with thecomputer, recently
computers have skyrocketed with improvement in the early 20th century due to new discoveries in technology. Which has changed society in a drastic
way.
The availability of these computer and TV's have a huge impact on the society as well. In later years not too many people owned a computer as they

Some people think that this is just a simple matter of getting off the computer, it's much more than that. I can become a disorder or an addiction, so
you can expected someone to just "get of the computer" it takes time and help. The Computer effect on children is also another study that should
be looked over as the exposure to computer can have effects on our children's health. A Study in 2000 saw that "people from the age of 2 through
17 were only on the TV /Computer for an average of 34 min a day." Not too bad you would think yet the answer lies where "when the children have
access to those technologies, those children spend an average of 5 hours a day watching a screen." (Behrman) This has been linked to obesity as
well the study found. Showing that with more hours of the day sucked into watching a screen kids are less active. No activity mean that kids eat and
don't burn the necessary calories they need to burn to grow properly. To help the harmful side effects that the computer can do to a child's young
mind the government as well as some other agencies have issued media exposure limits to show parents how much time to limit on their child's time
watching TV and being on the computer. This limit was set at only 2 hours a day on the basis that parents could influence kids to go outside and play
to get the exercise and other activities like games and sports.

How Did Thomas Edison Impact The World
When one thinks of a famous inventor from the past, who is the first person that comes to mind? Most would say Thomas Edison, who died in 1931,
but is still living in a way. Even in the 21st century, he is surrounding us with his inventions, such as functional incandescent light bulbs, and even the
cell phone you have in your pocket right now. Born in 1847 in Canal Town, Milan, Edison had a long and successful career as an inventor up until the
time of his death in 1931, at the age of 81. He was married to Mary Stilwell until her death in 1884. Shorly after, he married Mina Miller. A well known
American innovator, his most significant and famous inventions include the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and the long lasting practical
electric light bulb. Thanks to his inventions, Thomas Edison greatly impacted the world we live in today. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

for many years before him, but they were very unreliable and short lived ("Thomas Edison's most famous inventions"). Thomas Edison's version of
light bulbs were more affordable, and convenient to use. Edison's simple invention of the lightbulb lead him to inventing the entire electric utility
system, which enabled him to power all the light bulbs, motors and other appliances that he also created ("Thomas Edison's most famous inventions").
"Edison revolutionized indoor lighting and forever separated light from fire" ("Thomas Edison"). When Edison brought the incandescent light bulb to

Symbolism In The Invention Of Wings
Symbolism Within The Invention of Wings
The Novel The Invention of Wings, written by the American author, Sue Monk Kidd, contains numerous examples of imperative symbolism
throughout the storyline, but what may be the most significant illustration is that of which is in the title. "There was a time in Africa when people could
fly" (Kidd 1), "This all what left of your wings. They nothing but these flat bones now, but one day you gon get 'em back." (Kidd 1) being among the
first lines of the novel, foreshadows what is to come. The main characters and narrators, Sarah and Handful, who are from two extremely contrasting
ends of society, both have the desire to soar past social normality of the time.
Sarah Grimke is the middle child in the wealthy, slave holding, Grimke family, who begins to feel out of place throughout the course of her life due to
her moral convictions and progressive mentality. Such was not looked highly upon for women in the 1800's, leading to objectionable ... Show more

Later Sarah's feminist outlook for women's rights at the time becomes obvious when she rebels against social standards. Handful and Sarah become

that it was against the rules, because she made a promise to Charlotte to help free Handful.
Did you know once, when we were girls, Charlotte made me vow that one day I would do whatever I could to help you get free? We were out by the
woodpile where to little orphaned barn owl lived. I remember it like it was yesterday. I confess now, that's why I taught you to read. I told myself
reading was a kind of freedom, the only one I could give. I'm sorry, Handful. I'm sorry I couldn't keep the vow any better.

these new electric lights was in New York City. Johnson invented a string of 80 light bulbs. He then went on to become vice–president of Edison's

19th Century Research Paper
There have been many great inventions in the past few decades such as, computers and smartphones, but what about things from over one–hundred
years ago? These items have been around for over a century and yet we take these great inventions for their time for granted. People take so many
things for granted that they have in this world and feel as if these things will never go away. It takes losing things to fully appreciate what we have.
People want the hottest new thing every year like phones or other material goods that they do not need. This has created a society where everyone feels
that they will always have everything. The nineteenth century had many great inventions that gave way to a second industrial revolution that sparked
the minds of scientists and inventors everywhere. There are certain inventions of the 19th century that made a greater impact than other inventions of
this time on various societies and have provided a foundation for the society and technological advancements for today such as, electricity, the
typewriter, the telegraph, railroads and the advancement of medical technology. When the first modern light bulb that ran on electricity was created by

Question asks "Can a record be removed from the apparatus upon which it was made, and replaced upon a second without mutilation or loss of
effective power to vibrate the second plate?" This question asks if a second cylinder can be replaced without losing the quality of the recording.
Edison Answered with "it being a mechanical detail, and it is no greater obstacle than having the proper regard for the perfect interchangeable of the
various parts of the apparatus." It means that it is up to the personnel handling the change. This example does help the case being a revolutionary
invention because it needs to be handled with care. But in the next question "What as to durability?" actually answers the durability. T.E. answers with
"Repeated experiments that the indentations possess wonderful, enduring power... The perfect stonepoint with rendering the record capable of 50–100
repetitions, enough for practical purposes." His answer backs up his point that it is a revolutionary invention. Instead of hearing it once in a lifetime
you can hear it 50 to 100 times! With all these Q and A's Edison makes the readers of this literary magazine not doubt that his invention has no
problems instead of the readers thinking because of the phonograph is a new invention it will have flaws because it is so revolutionary. With these Q

perfected the invention and in doing so got rid of the rodent problem that was plaguing his employer's mill. Many consider this to be his first notable
invention, although he did seek out a patent for it.
His other professions included an instrument maker and a mechanical draftsman. He worked for his uncle, Levi Stephens, at an engineering firm in
Massachusetts. While in Boston he worked at a scientific instrument shop and later went on the work at a shipbuilding firm in New York. These
various experiences gave him the skill to create more inventions.
In 1866, at the age of 26, he received his first official patent for a curling iron. He also invented a coating for blackboards that was so successful that
large numbers of his specially coated blackboards were sold throughout North American (Dartford Technology). These inventions were followed by a
machine that would produce illumination gas and a locomotive head lamp.
These inventions combine with wealth of experience at a seemingly early age got the attention of Spencer D. Schuyler, founder of the United States
Electrical Lighting Company. In 1878 he was appointed chief engineer of the first electric lighting company in the U.S. It was there he began working
on various electrical devices and solidified his importance in the field of science and technology.

How Did Nikola Tesla Changed America's History
There are some famous inventors that I think have changed America's history because of their inventions. Eli Whitney inventing the cotton gin, Nikola
Tesla inventing the first AC motor, and Elijah McCoy inventing the lubricator for steam engines.
Nikola Tesla was originally from Croatia but then moved to the United States in 1884. He there created the first ever Air Conditioner motor in New
York also where he met Thomas Edison his future rival. One day Nikola Tesla was walking somewhere with sand and then his idea popped into his
head. He was thinking about a brushless Air Conditioner making the first sketches of its rotating electromagnets in the sand. During 1887 and 1888
Nikola Tesla's work caught the attention of George Westinghouse, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During his early life the McCoys were fugitive slaves who had escaped from Kentucky to Canada by the Underground Railroad. In 1847, he large
family returned to the United States, settling in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Beginning at a young age, Elijah McCoy showed a strong interest in
mechanics. Since he showed such a strong interest his parents arranged for him to travel to Scotland at the age of 15 for an apprenticeship in
mechanical engineering. He returned to Michigan after becoming certified as a mechanical engineer. Although due to racial barriers Elijah McCoy
was unable to find work as an engineer in the United States. The skilled professional positions were not available for African Americans at the time,
regardless of their training or background. Elijah McCoy accepted the position of a fireman and oiler for the Michigan Central Railroad. That was the
line of work that he developed his first major inventions. After studying the inefficiencies inherent in the existing system of oiling axles, Elijah
McCoy invented a lubricating cup that distributed oil evenly over the engine's moving parts. Elijah McCoy continued to refine his devices, receiving
nearly 60 patents over the course of his life. Although most of his inventions dealt with lubrication systems, he also developed designs for an ironing
board, a lawn sprinkler, and other machines. In 1920, toward the end of his life, McCoy formed the Elijah

1.INTRODUCTION
A patent is a grant generally given by the government of a country certifying that a particular individual or group was the creator of an invention or
innovative process. The patent holder is given exclusive rights to their invention ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Prior to this intellectual property was addressed in the American Constitution stating that inventors would have exclusive rights to their discoveries. The
Patent Act made patents last for fourteen years and gave inventors exclusive rights to their invention. There was no possibility of extending this time.
Many inventors argued that this was unsatisfactory and that since inventions could take many years to initially be commercialized they did not have
much time to make use of their patent. Another key point in the act was that foreigners were not allowed to apply for patents. The Secretary of State,
the Secretary of War, and the Attorney General were the only three people initially given power to approve or reject patents. Patents were examined by
these three to ensure applications met the given criteria but this process was criticized as taking an unreasonable amount of time to complete. It could
take months before a patent was sufficiently examined.
2.3 Patent Reform
There have been a multitude of times in history where patent laws have been either updated or thrown out. The Patent Acts of 1793 and 1837 are two
such cases. These acts reformed how patents were processed, changed what the criteria for patents were, and organized how patents were filed. In 1849
the Department of the Interior became responsible for managing patents. The Patent Act

How Has Thomas Edison Impacted Technology
Thomas Edison impacted technology as we know it today. He invented a variety of devices that influenced people around the world. In 1891 the
Edison Company invented the Kinetoscope and the kinetophone. The Kinetoscope allowed one person at a time to view moving pictures. The person
would use this device to look though a peep–hole while listening to the phonograph which connected to the kinetophone. Edison was looking for an
invention that went with the phonograph player. In 1888 he announces "I am experimenting upon an instrument which does for the eye that the
phonograph does for the ear, which is the recording and reproduction things in motion..." He intended to have sounded moving pictures. Problems in

fires, from the harsh fumes and chemicals. The gas mask has been improved since it was invented; now it's a thick plastic with a clear cover so the
person can see. Some gas masks now have an oxygen tube so if that person is in the fire for a long time, he or she will have enough air to breath. This
invention did lead to other inventions. After inventing the gas mask Garrett invented a hair straightener and many other hair products for African

The Invention Of The First American History
When you think of "the First American", who do you think of? Do you think of a pilgrim or a Native American? Do you think of Benjamin Franklin?
Probably not, but he has been graciously granted with this very title. Franklin is a large part of American history. A renowned polymath, he held many
occupations including; an author, printer, politician, scientist, inventor, civic activist and more! All throughout history there have been a plethora of
inspirational, hardworking, intelligent, life–changing personages, one of them being Benjamin Franklin. He changed not only the world, but America
and its history with his discoveries, knowledge, and beneficial insights. One of the most well known scientific discoveries Ben Franklin can be credited

Franklin proved that lighting was electricity and his discovery led to our world, starting with America, being more scientifically informed. One of the
most courageous acts of mankind in this world is fire fighting. Not many people may know this, but Benjamin Franklin was the founding father of
firefighting. "In 1736, Franklin proposed volunteer fire companies that would gather men quickly to extinguish a blaze." (Gausted 35) After a huge
Philadelphia fire, Franklin founded Philadelphia's first fire company – the Union Fire Company, the very first fire department. Franklin stated "I sought
to explain what caused them and how one could prevent such fires in the future" (McCormick 151) Franklin was very interested in learning more
about the situation and was concerned about the health and safety of everyone affected. Without his idea it would have been long before actual fire
companies were started. Before there were fireplaces, there were fire places, where people would simply huddle together around a fire in their homes
for warmth. Then came Benjamin Franklin and invented the metal lined fireplace. "Franklin had a spurred interest in improving heating systems. At
first people didn't have chimneys, they simply made a fire and sat around it. It did people little good to huddle by a fire, he argued, if currents of cold
air then buffeted them. Many colds are caught that way. Franklin lectured it would be safer to sit in the open street."

My Dream Short Story
Last night I had the craziest dream. I went to fell asleep while watching "The Gift". It was around midnight when I fell asleep and that is when my
weird dream occurred. I arrived at the carnival early in the evening. I purchased my ticket for the ferris wheel, along with my sister, Clara. We
proceeded to wait in line. The line was about a 2 hour wait. We waited in the line, which felt like eternity. It was finally our turn. We had both stepped
onto the ferris wheel with caution. I had a bad fear of heights and so did my sister. Clara set down her purple teddy bear next to her that she had just
won in the ring toss. As the ferris wheel began to turn, I pulled out my polaroid camera to take some pictures. I snapped a picture of Clara and I at
the very top of the ferris wheel. The picture came out of the camera and I shook it to get it to dry faster. It actually came out pretty good. I slid the
picture inside the pocket on the teddybears' t–shirt. The t–shirt was a pretty baby pink shirt with tiny white polka–dots. Suddenly the ferris wheel to
rock back and forth. Clara and I started to panic. A man got on the loudspeaker "We seem to be having some technical difficulties, the ride will
resume shortly." That is when I shot up out of bed heavily breathing and sweating. "That was a weird dream" I said to myself. I got out of bed and
started getting ready for the day. My phone began to ring. It was my sister. I picked up my phone and I answered. "Hello?". Clara had just invited
me to the carnival that is in town for the weekend. I agreed to go with her. Later that day, I met up with her at the carnival. She embraced me in the
biggest hug when I saw her. I had not seen her in quite a while. We began walking around, talking and catching up. She pointed to the giant ferris
wheel, "Lets go!" I stopped in my tracks. I was a little scared because I have a big fear of heights. She insisted I go with her. "Sure, why not?" I said.
We waited in line which did not take very long. We stepped onto the ferris wheel, as the man closed the door behind us, it began to turn pretty
quick. We got to the top of the ferris wheel and all of a sudden, it stopped. I looked over at Clara. She had a worried look on her face. I didn't want to

How Did Eli Whitney Affect The Economy
Eli Whitney was one of the greatest American inventors during at his time. Between 1793 and around 1800 Eli Whitney played an important role
during the Market Revolution when he invented the Cotton Gin, which changed the manufacturing of cottons, and the Interchangeable part machines
that helped the making of gun parts and luxury items that were easy to produce. Each of his inventions played a very large role in people's lives for the
North and the South. The inventions definitely changed the manufacturing of cotton and the making of gun parts which revolutionized the United
States. The Cotton Gin impacted the economy conditions both social and economic; as he fights for his legal rights for his invention, which led him to
his invention of the Interchangeable part machines, and signed contract with the government to make as many muskets in a certain period of time. Eli
Whitney Jr was born on the cold December 8, 1765 in Westborough, Massachusetts. His parents were... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1794, he finally received his patent for his invention. Whitney formed a partnership with Miller to manufacture the Cotton Gin for farmers

could easily make huge profits. The plan was to charge farmers with two–fifth of whatever profits they could make. For farmers, the idea was exciting
when they learned about the Cotton Gin and the intention not to share any profits with Whitney and Miller. This was a problem for them because the
patent law for the Cotton Gin was pirated; farmers easily developed their own Cotton Gin and improved the machine from the original. After the
invention, the Cotton Gin was a success and the South became the cotton king which made their economy

Benjamin Franklin the Inventor Essay example
Benjamin Franklin the Inventor Benjamin Franklin is recognized as one of the greatest Americans ever. He contributed to the advancement of our
country in many different ways. Since Franklin was a statesman, journalist, diplomat, inventor, and philosopher he was always in the middle of
everything of importance. It is arguable which of these appositives best describes him. One thing that can not be disputed is that he is the greatest
inventor ever. To be forty–two in Franklin's time was to be well beyond middle age. Life was much shorter then. He never guessed he would live to
double that age. Since retirement was not forced upon him, he felt no depression for cutting himself off from his work. This is when he... Show more

It warmed rooms better, and at the same time saved fuel. The important feature was the flue, which doubled back and formed sort of a radiator
around which warm air circulated. It cured most smoky chimneys, thus protecting both the eyes and the furniture. He turned over his model to a
friend with an iron furnace, who cast the plates for the stoves. They were soon in great demand as people learned about them through a pamphlet
Ben wrote and printed. (Osborne pg.66) Benjamin was as much interested in ventilating rooms as in warming them. He believed it healthier to
keep windows open and let in fresh air, a practice that annoyed many of his friends. To keep rooms warmer in cold weather, he developed a
damper, a metal plate that fits horizontally into the base of the chimney passage and can completely close it off, or when opened a small distance,
creates a slight draft, allowing smoke to go up the chimney while keeping most of the warm air in the room. (Meltzer pg.116) To improve the
lighting of rooms, he devised a new candle made from whale oil. It gave a clearer and whiter light, could be held in the hand without softening, and
its drippings did not make grease spots. His candles lasted much longer and needed little or no snuffing. He also developed a four–sided lamp to light
the city streets. The lamps stayed clean much longer and thus gave more light. (Meltzer pg.116) Franklin's experiments in so many

How Did Tesla Contribute To Modern Society
Nikola Tesla: Inventor Of Modern Society
When Nikola Tesla was born, electricity was a mere theory. There were no light bulbs, lamps, computers, cell phones, or any form of harnessed
energy. Nevertheless, young Tesla had a great mind that could envision all sorts of possibilities for this force. He invented thealternating current,
induction motor, Tesla coil, as well as laying the foundation for radio, neon lighting, remote control, radar, and even cell phones. So why don't we
think of Tesla as the true inventor of modern society? Because while Tesla's mind was great, his skills as a businessman were not. Although Tesla was a
poor businessman, his inventions were the driving force behind industrial modernization.

A.K. Brown, from the Western Union, decided to invest in Tesla's AC theories. In a modest laboratory not too far from Edison's offices, Tesla
crafted the motors just as he imagined them. He had finally been able to create the machine he had dreamed of for so long, but how would it fare
against Edison's generators? In late 1887, Tesla applied for seven patents affiliated with polyphase AC motors and power transmission. His ideas were
accepted and those inventions proved to be some of the most valuable ever created. Soon after, a man by the name of George Westinghousecaught wind
of Tesla's incredible ideas. After meeting with Tesla, he purchased the patents for $60,000 dollars, plus he agreed to pay $2.50 per horsepower of
electrical capacity sold. The advancements from Tesla's patents caused an industrial war to erupt. The future ofelectricity in the U.S. was at stake, as
well as whether Edison's DC or Westinghouse's AC would prevail as the central form of energy. It was around this time that Edison began his rampage

The Major Causes Of Industrialization In The United States
Industrialization began in 1877 and ended in 1900 the United States (U.S.). To have Industrialization, you must have these four things: natural
resources, transportation, urbanization, and technology. During this era, jobs became a necessity for citizens in the United States, industries began to
boom as well as new homes for people, but that also caused problems. Transportation was developed and it made life easier for transporting people
and goods from place to place. Many inventions helped the United States with many things. For example, the telegraph helped send messages and the
light bulb helped people see in the dark. Also, many Americans were losing their jobs because of immigration. Children during this time period had it
just as rough as the adults, maybe even more than them. The Industrial Revolution led to the growth of cities, industries, new inventions, and major
points that created transportation and housing for citizens because of new jobs and productions.
To have industrialization, there are a few things that are needed for it to happen. One of these necessities were natural resources. Water was one of
the most important resources because it was needed for water power and dams were built to hold water that could be channelled into mill races to
power industries. Later on in the years coal and iron were a major natural resource, it was also a source of power. The next ingredient needed for
industrialization was transportation. The railroad was the

Early American Inventions
Humankind has been searching for new ways to improve their lifestyle since the beginning of existence. Colonist that came into the new world had to
find new and better methods of survival. This was not only scholars from universities, but at times the average young farmer. Some of the country's
greatest technological innovators were, Samuel F. B. Morse and Joseph Henry, Eli Whitney, Cyrus McCormick, and John Deere. Not all of
technological inventions originated in the new world. There were some that originated in other countries and contributed to an economic change for
America. When families first started to arrive to America, people would walk or use horse and carriage as their primary means of transportation. The

With the rise of new inventions and faster growing wealth, there was still the need for improvement. One of the most popular commodities and
the most expensive was cotton. Cultivating cotton was done by hand using slaves. One person could pick and separates the seeds from the cotton
fiber at a rate of about one pound per person per day. This was a timely process that did not produce a fast return. However, there was still a high
demand for harvesting cotton to produce clothing and textiles in order to keep up with the growing population. A Yale College graduate named Eli
Whitney visited a coastal Georgia plantation called Mulberry Grove. This was the home of Catharine Greene, the widow of Nathanael Greene.
Catharine and Eli often discussed the difficulty in separating the cotton seed from the fiber. By 1793, Eli Whitley had developed what we know
today as the "Cotton Gin". The cotton gin was comprised of teeth like wires spaces close together on a round drum. The spacing of the wires were set
so that the fibers of the cotton would be pulled away from the seeds, producing clean seedless cotton. With this method a person could produce about
50 pounds of cotton compared to the previous one pound of cotton per day. This increased the production of cotton made it more profitable to grow and
harvest. This opened up more economic trade within the country while also increasing the need

  • 3. Inventions: Most Important In US History 1.What inventions do you think have been most important in U.S. history and why? a.In my opinion, the automobile and the utilization of electricity have been two of the most important inventions in United States history. The invention of the car expanded our horizons in the fact that citizens were able to travel, but also because people could live in places other than the city. Also, the utilization of electricity has become a part of life that we would not know how to live without. Electricity has allowed for businesses and homes to run in a convenient and efficient manner. Without electricity, we as a nation would have very little technology. 2.What do you think have been the five most important events in U.S. history since WWII? ... As a result of having these qualities, we were, and will continue to be, able to make progress as a country. I believe that the quality of honesty is the most important in making progress. If two people have a different understanding of a situation due to dishonesty, they will not be able to work together to find a solution and make progress. 6.President Obama noted that Americans faced a "new era of responsibility." Why do you think his words and vision have connected with so many Americans? a.I believe that his words have connected with so many Americans because they show that we as a nation are making progress. His words demonstrate to the public that we are going to experience change that in the end, will help our country become stronger. 7.Obama was elected in 2008; how do you think people will explain this time period 100 years from now? How do you think this time period is similar to or different from other eras in American history? a.I believe people will view this era as a period of reform. We are working through a great deal of social issues like gay marriage, legalization of marijuana and even racism. In my opinion, this compares greatly to the 1960s where civil rights took center stage. This was an era full of protests and violence that somehow all worked out for the greater good of the ... • 4. Short Story Morg The Greatest Inventors Of All Time Garret Morgan is easily one of the greatest inventors of all time. Morgan was born on March 4, 1877, in Paris, Kentucky to two former slaves Sydney Morgan and Elizabeth Reed Morgan. Morgan left his home at the age of fourteen and ended up in Ohio, where began to work finding odd jobs till he was able to save up enough money and start a business of his own. Morgan opened his own tailoring shop where he fixed sewing machines, and he eventually expanded it to clothing made from the sewing machines he built. Garret Morgan loved working with his hands and experimenting with new machines and products. In 1912 Morgan developed the "safety hood" which would eventually be known as the gas mask, it had a hood with an insert for fresh air and an exit for exhaled air; it was also connected to a tube in the back, which was an open end that contained a water–soaked sponge, the sponge would filter out smoke and so fresh air could get in. Because Garret Morgan was African American, the gas mask was not widely accepted, particularly in the south. Garret had to hire a white male to pose as the "inventor" of the safety hood; he himself would act as a test dummy during the presentations of the product. This worked in Morgan's favor the presentations skyrocketed the sales of the safety hood, especially among police and firefighters. The great importance of the safety hood was not fully understood until 1916 when workers building a tunnel in Lake Erie hit a pocket of natural gas, this caused an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Clearly, as a society, we would want to encourage the development of technology so that we can reap the benefits they offer us. Innovators require an incentive to invent and share these technologies with the rest of society. This incentive is achieved by granting intellectual property rights (IPR) to inventors . More specifically, the incentive is usually achieved by granting patents to inventors . Patents are governed under a Federal statute in Canada, the Patent Act . Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As their social class and society disintegrated around them, some women struggled to manage slave–worked planting fields or command female households, while others performed paid jobs in schools as teachers, in hospitals as nurses, and government occupations across the Confederacy. Lizzie Neblett, a Texan housewife, for example, gained more pivotal duties in a short span of time than she ever had in her entire life, she found strenuous labor especially cumbersome physically and mentally. Another hardship of the war was the strain it placed on married life. Men and women alike faced troubles with their significant others during wartimes because of the lack of intimacy, heavy turmoil, and a burdening depression overlaying the nation. Consequently, however, the expression of emotions previously overlooked before the outbreak of conflict between spouses was encouraged through martial separations caused by the war. Husbands and wives faced loneliness on a daily basis, which in effect led them to display compassion and caring towards each other as they witnessed the dreadfulness of war. This separation also caused a growth in feminine education and style, further forging the foundations for a new, individual American woman. Gathering from diaries, newspapers, letters, memoirs, and biographies, Faust depicts specific effects of the American Civil War on southern women, the antebellum social hierarchy of the Confederacy, and the overall upheaval of lives ... It wasn't always like this our computer technology has been advancing astronomical. When once computers were seen as a simple calculator for simple calculations. We valued them as they were specialized machines for each person and each person could have a different experience with thecomputer, recently computers have skyrocketed with improvement in the early 20th century due to new discoveries in technology. Some people think that this is just a simple matter of getting off the computer, it's much more than that. I can become a disorder or an addiction, so you can expected someone to just "get of the computer" it takes time and help. The Computer effect on children is also another study that should be looked over as the exposure to computer can have effects on our children's health. A Study in 2000 saw that "people from the age of 2 through 17 were only on the TV /Computer for an average of 34 min a day." Not too bad you would think yet the answer lies where "when the children have access to those technologies, those children spend an average of 5 hours a day watching a screen." (Behrman) This has been linked to obesity as well the study found. Showing that with more hours of the day sucked into watching a screen kids are less active. No activity mean that kids eat and don't burn the necessary calories they need to burn to grow properly. To help the harmful side effects that the computer can do to a child's young mind the government as well as some other agencies have issued media exposure limits to show parents how much time to limit on their child's time watching TV and being on the computer. This limit was set at only 2 hours a day on the basis that parents could influence kids to go outside and play to get the exercise and other activities like games and sports. • 13. Symbolism In The Invention Of Wings Symbolism Within The Invention of Wings The Novel The Invention of Wings, written by the American author, Sue Monk Kidd, contains numerous examples of imperative symbolism throughout the storyline, but what may be the most significant illustration is that of which is in the title. "There was a time in Africa when people could fly" (Kidd 1), "This all what left of your wings. They nothing but these flat bones now, but one day you gon get 'em back." Prior to this intellectual property was addressed in the American Constitution stating that inventors would have exclusive rights to their discoveries. The Patent Act made patents last for fourteen years and gave inventors exclusive rights to their invention. There was no possibility of extending this time. Many inventors argued that this was unsatisfactory and that since inventions could take many years to initially be commercialized they did not have much time to make use of their patent. Another key point in the act was that foreigners were not allowed to apply for patents. The Secretary of State, the Secretary of War, and the Attorney General were the only three people initially given power to approve or reject patents. Patents were examined by these three to ensure applications met the given criteria but this process was criticized as taking an unreasonable amount of time to complete. It could take months before a patent was sufficiently examined. 2.3 Patent Reform There have been a multitude of times in history where patent laws have been either updated or thrown out. The Patent Acts of 1793 and 1837 are two such cases. These acts reformed how patents were processed, changed what the criteria for patents were, and organized how patents were filed. In 1849 the Department of the Interior became responsible for managing patents. The Patent Act

Franklin stated "I sought to explain what caused them and how one could prevent such fires in the future" (McCormick 151) Franklin was very interested in learning more about the situation and was concerned about the health and safety of everyone affected. Without his idea it would have been long before actual fire companies were started. Before there were fireplaces, there were fire places, where people would simply huddle together around a fire in their homes for warmth. Then came Benjamin Franklin and invented the metal lined fireplace. "Franklin had a spurred interest in improving heating systems. At first people didn't have chimneys, they simply made a fire and sat around it. It did people little good to huddle by a fire, he argued, if currents of cold air then buffeted them. Many colds are caught that way. Franklin lectured it would be safer to sit in the open street." ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

(Osborne pg.66) Benjamin was as much interested in ventilating rooms as in warming them. He believed it healthier to keep windows open and let in fresh air, a practice that annoyed many of his friends. To keep rooms warmer in cold weather, he developed a damper, a metal plate that fits horizontally into the base of the chimney passage and can completely close it off, or when opened a small distance, creates a slight draft, allowing smoke to go up the chimney while keeping most of the warm air in the room. (Meltzer pg.116) To improve the lighting of rooms, he devised a new candle made from whale oil.
