“Action bias” as the name suggests is when people act/ do stuff only so
that they cannot be accused of not trying. Scientists have often shown
that one sub-set of footballers are more prone to action bias than the rest
– and it is the assumption of action bias that leads to opposing players
trying out something against them.
Whatever is being tried actually has on average a 15% lower probability of
success than all other available options – with one such famous example
occurring late in the EPL this year.
What is this less-than-optimal choice that players make due to the
assumption of action bias on the opponent’s part? (One key word is
enough, not specifying if it is a proper noun – use your judgement)

The first use of this two-word phrase (now most famously associated with
other fields) was in Britain in the late 19th century, when after decades of
rallies and demonstrations in Britain, a parliamentary act of 1898 included
the ‘____________ _______’ clause – removing penalties for not following
the letter of the law.
The subject of the act continues to be relevant even today
What two-word phrase fills in the blanks? What was the subject of the
act?

A proto-Indian root word meaning ‘bitter’ was commonly used to refer to
crude, beer brewed in the countryside (a related word survives even today).
In the early 19th century, someone borrowed this root as the name for a
discovery from a bitter salt. A compatriot of his (more famous in another field),
some 30 years later would randomly lay into him saying that the name “is a
fossilized part of Latin speech, about as suited to the mouths of the populace as
an ichthyosauros cutlet or a dinornis marrow-bone.” – suggesting the
alternatives loam-silver and glebe-gold instead.
Who had originally named something from this PIE root meaning bitter salt?
Who was the compatriot criticizing his choice of name a few decades later

In choosing the name for a newly defined phenomenon, this person
wanted to avoid any sexual connotations. She therefore chose the
operative part of a four-word name using a ‘dictionary entry’ – that she
claims defined it as ‘a point or period of highest development, greatest
prosperity, or the like’. The creator was clearly mixing up stuff cos while
the ‘highest point’ meaning is correct and therefore used in geography
and science – there is no reference to prosperity etc. in the original Latin.
What does the term used actually translate to in Latin – because of
which it is used to mean highest point?

In 1980, an exhibition at the 79 Gallery involving Sliman Mansour, Nabil Anani
and Issam Badr was shut down and all the works confiscated – because they
were judged to have violated an existing law banning depictions of a specific
object (even though none of the works actually showed the object).
Badr then asked the authorities what would happen “if he were to paint a still
life depicting a __________” and was told that it would be confiscated. As a
result, the objects that Badr referenced in his question is now a common sight
at protests across the region since then.
Subsequently the government doubled down and made the law even more
severe – banning the simultaneous use of some colours – before rolling it back
in 1993.
What object was banned from being depicted by the original law? What was

Last 7 Questions, Anti-Clockwise
Magnum Dopus (One Last Quiz, Again!!) – BCQC Fundraiser Series – July 21
His India sojourn was actually only a few years long – with the longest
continuous stretch between 1857 and 1860 when he was the first Principal of
what would later become the Deccan College in Poona. He did make a
couple of shorter visits again in the 1880s.
As the long-time editor of The Telegraph he was instrumental in African
affairs – he played a leading role in gathering funds and support for the
Stanley expedition to the Congo in the 1870s (with numerous things named
after him in tribute) and was the first to propose a ‘ ____ __ _____ _______’
– before the idea was hijacked by others and is now normally associated
with those people rather than him.
Who is this person – back in the news thanks to a recent work? What idea
had he proposed in the 1870s?
24
Sir Edwin Arnold – who wrote The Light of Asia
The Cape to Cairo Railway – hijacked by Cecil Rhodes

This coastal South American country supplies 95% of the global production of
wood from a species called Ochroma Pyramidale. Although a hardwood by
nature, the wood is among the softest, lightest, and still most durable and water-
resistant forms available – as a result of which it is much in demand globally.
Over the past couple of years especially – its use in making ‘one particular item’
has spiked demand (with large orders especially from India and China) –
somewhat ironically also leading to the large-scale destruction of forests of the
species wreaking havoc in the native country. What are these new items for
which Ochroma Pyramidale is exclusively used?
The common name from the species comes from Spanish and is a result of the
first use that natives of the country would have put the species to. What does the
Spanish derived common name translate to?
25
Turbine blades for wind power projects
Balsa – meaning Raft in Spanish

“Very surprisingly, this happens by the end of the first chapter itself. But they are so
deliriously happy that they get too tired to do what they set out to do. The following day, they
wake up, other events take place, and they postpone the destruction again. A few days later,
they find that one group is in control of the ________ ______ and every time any dissent is
shown, the protestors are silenced by flashing a picture of the ________ ______ that reduces
them to submission. The new regime is validated by the imagery of the old…….
After all those years of struggling for independence, when the British left, that is what we did,
we occupied Lutyens buildings, we moved into the ________ ______. And every time a new
building is constructed in Delhi (and someone protests) edicts are issued asking them to
comply with the Lutyens-Baker style of architecture. Even when we do get the chance to
build anew all we want to do is extend the ________ ______’

The visuals on the next slide are from a 1992 ceremony at the National
Palace where the Alba facsimile was presented to the king and a visiting
head of state. This event was followed by a large public prayer meeting
and commemorative ceremony at the nation’s largest facility where the
king said ‘ _______ isn't a nostalgic memory anymore; it is a place to call
home...What matters is not accountability for what we may have done
wrong or right, but the willingness to look to the future, and analyze the
past in light of our future’
What historic event was being commemorated by these events?
What term has been blanked out in the King’s speech?
27
The visiting head of state
The Alhambra decree – expelling the Jews from Spain

Magnum Dopus (One Last Quiz, Again!!) – BCQC Fundraiser Series – July 21
The art for this 1989 debut album was created by the band’s guitarist –
inspired by Jackson Pollock. He also incorporated a few additional
elements – based on something he had seen in a documentary covering
an event from two decades or so before the album released.
The title he chose for the painting also inspired the single you will hear on
the album that references both the historic event and the use that the
participants had made of this item.
What event ? What items and what use were they put to?

Apart from his primary claim to fame, he was also a fixture on the music
scene of the city – often DJing, and directing and producing music videos for
his genre inventing friends (visual follows). His friendship with these genre-
inventors was responsible for a certain motif featured across his works,
which was his way of trying to imitate a basic action that these pioneers
were performing. What motif in his works was inspired by the new genre?
In addition, he also was influenced by musical royalty from an older genre
(who often featured as subjects in his works) – and he incorporated another
motif, which would also become a sort of personal trademark from these
interactions. What was this motif?

from a character in myth – the bare skin around the head and neck
perhaps an allusion to the character’s death by hanging (helpful visuals
follow)
What character?
The common Indian name (that has since been adopted by others over
the world in common use) is a corruption of the Sanskrit for ‘lake-bird’ –
the same name also lending itself to a place name in Pune.
What place name in Pune derives from this creature?
30
Antigone (daughter of Oedipus)
Sarasbag – which derives from the Sarus crane (Sarus = Sar-hans)
Khatam Shud..

Scientists have often shown that one sub-set of footballers are more prone to action bias than the rest – and it is the assumption of action bias that leads to opposing players trying out something against them. Whatever is being tried actually has on average a 15% lower probability of success than all other available options – with one such famous example occurring late in the EPL this year. What is this less-than-optimal choice that players make due to the assumption of action bias on the opponent’s part?
