Why the la
Why the lab coats?
Why the class?
To explore the possibilities of this medium
To find how we can apply cinematic language to Mobile Media storytelling
To Lean the language of the different uses and modalities of mobile devices
And to have fun
-the best camera is the one in your hand
-You can document anything (People could think you are just texting)
image quality is getting much much better
-Cheaper than traditional media
-Allows for a different kind of intimacy
-Less crew, you can get close
And to expand their way of thinking about filmmaking and storytelling
Why Mobile storytelling?
First iPhone
The class is dynamic
Each week this was something new to re-adjust to.
iPhone 13 released, cinematic mode and more capabilities.
Lots of changed in how to work with sound on mobile.
New work being made on mobile.
If you are afraid of change, do not teach this class!
Past classes in
Mobile
The change this year was to focus on storytelling though technology
And
Broadening the notion of mobile to include Tik Toks, AR, and Podcasting
Smallest format video
To iPhone video –
To mobile storytelling
Converging histories brought us to this place
Democratizing of media media
Technology of the mobile's phones
Phone connected to the internet
Apps
16 mm film was an inexpensive alternative to 35 mm film
Then came 8 mm, super 8 , ½ reel to reel (1970)
Then came vhs (first camcorder 2006),
Betamax, SVHS, Beta HiFi, 8mm , hi8, Mini DV to Final Cut Pro
Flip camera Dslr,
With each change, more people could afford to make films. With each change the image got better
Early phones were HUGE , expensive and did not work
well
Photos came in 2000 only sold in Japan /video came later
Now we have 8 K. better lens, sound is still a struggle
The mobile phone
Being able to record and send or send live makes
everyone a broadcaster
This destroys gatekeepers
Curation turns into algorithm
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Instagram, tic
Tok, clubhouse
Video connected to the internet
Cultural perspective
Everything is recordable
What is evidence
Context
What is privacy
Kinds of Media shot with Mobile phone

Computational Photography
is the FUTURE
Cinematic mode is just the beginning
Every change in technology causes and change in aesthetics
-Brian Eno (and probably someone before him, but that is where I heard it)

Samsung S21 Ultra
8 K video 5 cameras
Super slo-mo (needs lots of light)
AR
Everyone in the class got a phone for the semester
(Thank You, Samsung!)
What resolution do you shoot with?
Mobile kit
There are many stabilizers and rigs for mobile , I found the DJI Osmo the best
And some selfie sticks actually can do a great job
Sound
I found most of the on-phone mics lacking
Double system (use 2 phones one in a shirt pocket)
for Tangerine they had a traditional sound person)
Rode GO 1 and GO 2 (2 is better)
when doing double system need to clap hands to signify a good take
look for waveform spike.
you can get a cable to use your Sennheiser lavs

Mics like this need
an adapter cable
TS, TRS and TRRS
And there are many more,
And everyday there are more
Shoot with camera app or?
FILMIC PRO
A must, professional control, raw, double take
If you need cinematic mode, or super slow mode, use the native app
Otherwise …
Moment anamorphic – needs a case
Adapters
To show work in class, just a USB to HDMI or lightening to HDMI
Apple TV box works as well.
It seems like I bought some kind of adapter each week.

How do you rethink media to be seen on such a small screen
We played the videos from a phone!

Early mobile
phones
Big/expensive/ not great sound /no pix /were not a mass
market item
The first camera phones released in the year 2000 had only
enough memory to store around 20 photos, and each image
was capable of resolution anywhere from 0.11 to 0.35
megapixels. In the earliest models of phone cameras, users
had to physically connect their phone to a computer in order
to view snapshots.
1908 a US Patent was issued in Kentucky for a wireless
telephone.
1940s engineers working at AT&T developed cells for mobile
phone base stations.
The very first mobile phones were not really mobile phones at
all. They were two-way radios that allowed people like taxi
drivers and the emergency services to communicate.
Motorola, on 3 April 1973 were first company to mass
produce the the first handheld mobile phone.
1946: The first calls were made on a car radiotelephone in
Chicago.
1985: Comedian Ernie Wise made the first “public” mobile
phone call in the UK from outside the Dicken’s Pub in St
Catherine’s dock to Vodafone’s HQ. He made the call in full
Dickensian coachman’s garb.
History of mobile
1992: The world’s first ever SMS message was sent in the UK
1998: The first downloadable content sold to mobile phones was the ringtone
1999: Emojis were invented by Shigetaka Kurita in Japan.
The first BlackBerry phone was also unveiled in 1999 email on the phon2200
2000 The all-conquering Nokia 3310 crash landed on shop shelves. went on to sell 126 million
units.
The Sharp J-SH04, launched in November 2000 in Japan. The only snag? you could only use it in
Japan. Europe wouldn’t get its first camera phone until the arrival of the Nokia 6750 in 2002.
Getting closer
Sharp Jsho4
The J-SH04 was a mobile phone made by
Sharp Corporation ). It was only available in
Japan, and was released in November 2000.
It was Japan's first phone with a built-in, back-facing camera.
It has a 110,000 pixel CMOS image sensor and a 256 color display.
•The rear camera on the iPhone has a resolution of 2
megapixels,
•and and geotagging
•The phone featured apps, and app development kit wa
released on 2008
And In 2007 everything changed
Apps changed software forever
Was thought of as a ipod , internet and phone
But became so much more
