PSYC0103 SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY
3. STORYLINE
1. Story started with a village girl from Malawi, whose name was Fiona. Because she
was the smartest girl in the village, her dad sent her to Taylor’s University in
Malaysia to study. On the first day of class, she nearly fell, and was worried that
people may look at her.
2. There were two classmates, named Min Chuen and Nazmi, who talked about how
black people act and other negative assumptions about the new student.
3. After class, she went to a Chinese restaurant to grab some food. Being new to the
way of eating, she had a hard time using chopsticks. She then looked to the table
beside her, and learnt how Min Chuen used the chopsticks.
4. On the way back to class, she bumped into Shamil, who was talking on the phone
in the middle of the way. Shamil got angry and started to get into an argument
with Fiona. During the argument, many bystanders were looking at them, and had
no intention in helping Fiona.
5. Fong Yen saw what happened and tried to help Fiona out. She told Shamil off and
walked away with Fiona.
6. After that incident, Fiona got close to Fong Yen, and started hanging out since
then.
4. Scene 1
Fiona walked into the class at the first day of her
university life and she tripped over a chair.
5. 1.THE SPOTLIGHT EFFECT
DEFINITION :
The "Spotlight Effect" refers to the tendency to think that
more people notice something about you than they do.
6. APPLICATION OF CONCEPT
For the first scene, spotlight effect occurred when Fiona, the main
character nearly tripped in the class. This concept can be seen when she
thought to herself that everyone was looking at her.
7. Scene 2
Other students saw a new student, which is Fiona. And
they discussed their opinion about her.
8. 2.STEREOTYPE (RACISM)
DEFINITION :
Stereotyping is the tendency to limit and disregard
people’s individuality, which then leads to negative
assumptions. When we stereotype people, we tend to
group them based on their traits.
9. Stereotype can be seen in both Fiona’s classmates, Min Chuen and Nazmi.
Stereotyping is seen when Nazmi told Min Chuen, black people often do
bad things and are dumb.
APPLICATION OF CONCEPT
10. Scene 3
After class, Fiona went to a Chinese restaurant. She didn’t
know how to use the chopsticks. Instead of using fork and
spoon, she learnt how to use the chopsticks by
observation.
11. 3. OBSERVATIONAL LEARNING
DEFINITION:
Observational learning is referred to as shaping, modelling
or indirect reinforcement. A person watches others (models)
engage in behaviours and then starts repeating the same
actions after that.
13. Scene 4
On the way back to class, she bumped into Shamil, who
was talking on the phone in the middle of the way. Shamil
got angry and started to get into an argument with
Fiona. During the argument, many bystanders were looking
at them, and had no intention in helping Fiona.
15. Hostile aggression can be seen in Shamil who pushed Fiona
just because she accidentally bumped into him. He even
wanted to start a fight with her, which was driven by his anger.
APPLICATION OF CONCEPT
16. 5. THE BYSTANDER EFFECT
DEFINITION:
The bystander effect occurs when the presence of others
discourages an individual from intervening in an
emergency situation
17. Even though, Shamil pushed Fiona and about to hit her in front of so many
people, no one lent her hand in helping Fiona out. Everyone just stood still
and looked at them, the responsible is diffused
APPLICATION OF CONCEPT
18. Scene 5
Fong Yen saw what happened and tried to help Fiona
out. She told Shamil off and walked away with Fiona.
After that incident, Fiona got close to Fong Yen, and
started hanging out since then and at last they became
best friends.
19. 6. MERE EXPOSURE EFFECT
DEFINITION:
The mere exposure effect is a psychological phenomenon
by which people tend to develop a preference for things
or people that are more familiar to them than others.
20. APPLICATION OF CONCEPT
After Fong Yen helped Fiona, the both got familiar to each
other and started to hang around together. They always hang
out together and eventually, they became best friends.
