I have to admit that this is a tough paper to write. Considering the two choices of Social Justice
and Sustainability, I was at a loss and I still am to a degree. In contemplating my involvement with
these topic choices there is none. There is no specific event that I can recall where I feel that I am
involved. I did do some fundraising with my co–workers. Can I consider that as my community for
this exercise? I was in charge of the fundraising events for 3 years for the office where I worked.
This was not something that my co–workers fully invested themselves in, but It was a good cause.
The events were fun and a good time was had by all. Once the events were over, it was back to
what was important to them. There is no judgement on my part as we all do the same. These

is done? I am not aware that anyone from the office ever continued to be involved, myself
included. Does this mean we have dropped the ball? Maybe, but there is more to the story. All of
the events were public auctions. We contacted customers and asked them for items. Cash would be
ok too, but we needed items for the auctions. Our customers were generous with diamond earrings,
5 pound bags of stone crab claws, old but professionally maintained arcade games, hand painted
silk blouses, leather jackets and other really nice things. We even got a visit from Ronald

life I have been thought that killing is wrong and that no human being has the right to kill another

Social sciences and social justice are both based on the structure of rights. Our rights were
designed to create equality for all. However, there are always outliers in our justice system and

justice dogma, there is a fixation on identity and privilege rather than advancement. Parts of the SJW
movement touch on real and clear inequities and bring these issues into the public eye. However, a
fair majority of the time SJW privilege rhetoric attempts to convey an absurdly simplistic view of
complex social dynamics that are much more intricate than gender and racial advantages. An example
scenario of the over–simplification of logic from the movement is a scenario of the white son of a
poor single mother having an easier easier than the daughter of a wealthy black couple. Scenarios
such as the one listed above are largely disregarded by the movement simply because of one party's

Reflection On Social Justice
Georg Christoph Lichtenberg once said "I cannot say whether things will get better if we change;
what I can say is that they must change if they are to get better." Injustices can be explained as
something that is not to everybody's benefit, or simply something this is unfair. Going into this class,
I did not know much about social justice or cities in general. After being in it for a short 3 weeks, I
have learned a lot of new material and am excited to learn more. I believe that social justice is a
combination of the opportunities and freedoms within the different socioeconomic classes.

There are two things that immediately come to mind when I think about social justice in the real
world. Education is one. Typically, people are more prone to go to college if their parents or
siblings go to college. Going back to the topic of East Des Moines, East high school is not a
school that is looked well upon. The teachers are underpaid and most of the students do not care
about their education enough to go to class everyday. Knowing this, students from schools like that
are less likely to go on to college and get an education. This then leads to them not getting good jobs
and making enough money to support themselves. I believe that this is an injustice because those
students do not choose to go to schools like that, but they get started off on the wrong foot right
from the start. People look down on them because of the school they go to. The other thing I think
about when I hear the word social justice is Racism. Segregation is something that most people don't
think is still a problem, but unfortunately it is. "They view segregation as an unfortunate holdover
from a racist past, one that is fading progressively overtime" (Massey 1). African American people
that live in rougher neighborhoods, Chicago for example, are usually in the lower socioeconomic
class. Being an African American in the lower socioeconomic class makes it easy for white people
