words

which

Lemi
Ghariokwu,
a
Nigerian
ar:st
and
designer
who
is
most
renowned
for
providing
many
of
the
original
cover
images
for
the
recordings
of
Fela
Ku:.
Fela
Anikulapo
Ku:
or
simply
Fela
was
a
Nigerian
mul:-­‐instrumentalist,
musician,
composer,
pioneer
of
the
Afrobeat
music
genre,
human
rights

and

maverick.

Fela
believed
that
this
vision
was
mo:vated

a
spiritual
link

ancestral

even

it
did
not
save
his
own
life

restore
a
sense
of

the

year
–
1970-­‐71
–
Fela
set
a
pace
which
was
incredible,
not
only
in
terms
of
his
musical
growth
but
also
his
philosophical
and
ideological
trajectory.
The
issues
he
raised
as
he
discussed
the
lyrics
of
his
songs
grew
increasingly
topical,
and
he
began
the
form
of
public
speaking
which
he
termed
'yabis'
in
which
he
would
excoriate
government
officials
for
their
inefficiency,
or
preach
a
new
form
of
freedom
of
expression.

a
