Editor's Notes
IT or information technology is getting really similar to water or air. We often think that we can’t live without it.
However, we rarely think about those people who created and developed its soft and hardware base.
We hardly know that there were Hungarian-born among them.
Let’s see some of these great minds now.
When you think of IT you must never forget the world of numbers because that is the base of computing. The binary code, (in fact the numbers 1 and O) is secret language of computer operation.
IT progress needs good scientists.
Hungary had given some really important scientists to the world. For example Ede Teller or Pál Erdős.
There was a Maths genius, John Neumann, who made a breakthrough with numbers and computers.
He created a computer model which is still the base of modern IT machines. Neumann’s principles set the background of the evolution of modern personal computers and IT gadgets.
John Kemeny was another famous „computer pioneer”, who worked most of his life at Dartmouth University.
He invented a system that could connect users in a network at the university. the first social network with 300 interactive users in the 1970’s !)
He sent the very first mails in history. (to his wife working 300kms away)
Leslie Vadasz was the leader of the team who developed the Intel C 4004 processor which was the first one made commercially available to the general market.
In 1976 it was the CEO of Intel, Andrew Grove, who made the company focus on making microprocessors.
Yes, it is. There are some other and perhaps better processors in the world, but Intel is still a standard. Your smartphone, GPS, tablet, netbook has one inside.
In a way, these great people are more respected in the USA than in their motherland. It’s surprising so we think it is worth getting to know more about them.
Remember their names? Neumann, Kemeny, Vadasz, Grove?
