The Northern Renaissance was a period of great cultural and intellectual change in Europe during the 14th-16th centuries, spreading northwards from Italy after the Carolingian Renaissance of the 9th century had been based there. This movement represented a new interest in ancient Greco-Roman culture and Renaissance humanism. It flourished in the Netherlands, Germany, France and the Italian city-states, spreading into those areas not controlled by the Catholic Church.
