Alexander the great
1. Alexander the Great:
1)Why was he Alexander the GREAT?
Well, he’s accomplished many great things but he
took those ideas from his father, Phillip, chose a
great tutor, Aristotle. Aristotle taught Alexander
geography, zoology, politics, and medicine.
Alexander based his military campaigns on
Aristotle’s teachings. Few scholars believe that
Alexander was somehow involved in Phillip’s
assassination. Alexander instructs his mother,
Olympia to kill the infant son of Phillip’s last wife.
The most developed weapon was called the
phalanx. His father developed it. Alexander crossed
the Hellespont. After defeating the Persians,
Alexander decided to enter Egypt. They happily
appointed Alexander as a pharaoh. The priest there
told him that he was the son of Zeus. After less
than a year in Egypt, Alexander resumed to chasing
after the Persian emperor, Darius III. At the plains
of Gaugamela, Darius assembled an army of
200,000, which included cavalry wearing chain
mail and chariots with blades spinning out of the
wheels. Alexander's 47,000 men attacked Darius'
flanks, splitting the Persian forces, while Alexander
charged into the center. The Persians broke ranks
and were routed. Darius escaped by horseback,
2. only to be later killed by one of his own men.
Having conquered the Persians, Alexander was
named King of Asia. He took Babylon and
Persepolis, the Persian capital. In an attempt to
solidify his rule, he began to dress like a Persian,
and married a Persian dancer named Roxanne. His
men found it unbecoming of their king that he
thought it necessary to please a defeated enemy.
Right before Alexander’s siege of Tyre, Darius the
III, King of Persia, offered Alexander a truce, land,
and his daughter’s hand in marriage. Alexander
refused the offer and instructed Darius to
henceforth refer to Alexander as “Lord of Asia,”
and not as an equal. He added, ‘I shall pursue you,
wherever you may be.” Never doubt you can
accomplish what you set out to do and do not
compromise.
2)What was his not so great thing?????????????
After his father conquered Greece, he went on to
conquer Egypt, Persia, and got to India. His 1st
mistake was in India where he wanted to go
further (it ill the end of the world-probably he
would’ve reached China) but his soldiers
rebelled and insisted they’d get back, That
happened because his soldiers could not
understand his desire for knowledge. Alexander
didn’t conquer out of greed (most of the tine he
didn’t allow his soldiers to rob the places they
3. conquered)- another reason for dissatisfaction),
his conquests were a way for him to explore. He
also failed at unifying his empire although he
attempted to by marrying 10,00 Persian women
to 10,000 Macedonian men all the marriages
(except one) were dissolved once he died. So did
his empire because the countries he conquered
had nothing in common so they couldn’t stay
together. His probably greatest mistake was
15,000 of his men died of starvation or heat in
the Gedrosan Dessert-more than all those he lost
in battle. He had once said at his last words was
that he came empty-handed into this world and
empty handed as he goes out of this world.
Conclusion: Alexander the Great
accomplished many things but he also did
lots of senseless things. But Alexander was
a great leader and said many things that
influence our culture today. So in my
opinion, I think that Alexander was really
great.
