Hitler pursued an aggressive foreign policy with three main aims: reversing the Treaty of Versailles, creating a Greater Germany, and gaining living space. He took several steps towards war, including withdrawing Germany from the League of Nations in 1933. Germany was surrounded by countries that allied with France in response. In 1934, Hitler sought to unite Austria with Germany after Austrian Nazis murdered the chancellor, but backed down when Mussolini sent troops to the Austrian border.
