To understand what team traditions are.
Traditions are ceremonies and rituals that play an important
role in the climate and culture of your team. Traditions help
create positive order, clarity, and predictability while commonly
negative rituals of initiation induct new members into the group.
If harassment, intimidation and bullying are present in the
traditions and initiation, they need to stop. No place for that.
Traditions play a powerful role in bonding a group together and
solidifying the team with the traditions and values.
Traditions are expressive events that provide order, meaning
and bind a team together and have a significant impact on
team culture and climate.
Reflect on and answer the following questions as a small
group, position group, with a partner/ teammate, as a coaching
staff or by yourself.
After you have completed the questions discuss your answers
in a group or with a teammate/ staff member.

and annual traditions. Do they reinforce
team goals, or not?

(a) are no longer appropriate,
(b) put the team in a negative light,
(c) risk injury, or
(d) do not promote team objectives, and should be eliminated.
