1. Athlete Builder: Assistant Coach Reference Guide
Section 10 - Reference Guide When You Are a New Hire
Dealing With Being a New Hire
Awareness Development
• Be proactive in getting to know other new hires during new teacher
orientation. They will function like a pledge class/ support network for you.
• Don’t skip new teacher training for practice unless you know the principal has
approved it.
• Get to know the department head ASAP and be ready for a little power
struggle. Some of them view you as a burden because other coaches did not
handle their business in the classroom. You will most likely have to beat this
stereotype at every school you work for.
• You need to be overly prepared with outstanding lessons in the classroom
your first year. You will be under a microscope. You need to blow your
evaluators socks off when they are in your classroom. This will lead to them
trusting you and visiting less and less as your years accumulate at this
new school.
• Try not to date teachers at your school. It works for some but for others it be
comes a nightmare
• Be very careful with complainers who try to latch onto you. They are in every
department in every school and are just looking for a new ear to complain to.
You probably don’t need to be associated with them.
