3 Objectives
The objective with the course is to give the student
basic knowledge and understanding of how today’s
modern mobile/wireless communication systems
work with respect to services, architecture, and
technology.

• Mobile services
• Wireless transmission
• Access methods
• Mobile telecommunications (GSM, UMTS)
• Satellite communication systems
• Wireless networks (WLAN) and Bluetooth
• Mobility in the TCP/IP stack
5 Aims and learning outcomes
On completion of the course the student will:
• understand how wireless transmission functions
and how the resources are shared between the users
• have knowledge of how to coordinate the access to
common resources in a wireless communication
system

• know how today’s mobile telecommunication
systems (GSM and UMTS) are constructed and how
they work
• understand the most basic things of how the
satellite communication systems function
• know how wireless networks function with
emphasis on IEE802 and Bluetooth
• understand how mobility can be supported in the
transport- and network storage in the TCP/IP stack

The following generic skills are trained in the
course:
• Basic ICT competence
• Academic writing
7 Learning and teaching
The course may be given either as a distance course,
and then carried out with an electronic conference
system on the Internet, or as a campus course. The
course also includes laboratory work and/or hand-in
assignments. Most of the course material is in
English.
