3. The women of Namuana village in
Fiji have a very strange ritual of
‘calling turtles from the sea’.
The turtles will not rise, if any
member of the neighboring village
of Nabukelevu is present there at
the time.
There is a reason behind it.

4. Long ago in the lovely village of Namuana there lived
two beautiful women- Tinaicoboga, the wife of the chief
of Namuana, and their daughter Raudalice.
One day, they went to a far away place for fishing.
They were caught by the fishermen from neighboring
village Nabukelevu. The women begged for their lives,
but no one listened.

5. As the women were taken away, there
caused a storm in the sea and the canoe
was in danger of drowning.
The women turned into turtles and they
were thrown into the sea by the
fishermen.
The belief is that the turtles that live in
the Kadavu bay are the generation of these
two women.
The people of Namuana and Namukelevu
are great enemies even today.
